In this episode, former clients John and Matthew share their personal journeys and the obstacles they faced in seeking support. From societal pressures to internalized notions of masculinity, we discuss how men can overcome some of the barriers that prevent them from getting the help they deserve and the importance of finding the courage to reach out.

Over the Australian summer, I've been picking out some cracker eps that you might have missed or would benefit from revisiting. This chat with Beau Miles, a Patagonia and Outward Bound ambassador, author and YouTube star, is perfectly calibrated to keep the holiday spirit alive just a little longer.Beau used to be a mad explorer – he's indeed conquered Everest base camp, became the first person to run 650kms across the Australian Alps, kayaked Bass Strait and the rest. But a few years back he made the switch to exploring the world closer to home and now inspires a league of fans who froth over his mad-as videos of running the length of the old Warragul-Noojee Railway line to learn its history (dressed in a train driver uniform, carrying a shovel and three jars of dried pasta, just to chuck a hardship bomb into the equation), eating his body weight in beans (to see what happens), and spending a night in the tree outside his front door. This is more of a fun two-way chat where the two of us compare notes on flipping your day-to-day life into a flirtation, getting out of life ruts, playing and loving being weird.Grab Beau's book The Backyard Adventurer: Meaningful and pointless expeditions, self-experiments and the value of other people's junk Stay up to date with all his adventures via Instagram You can watch Beau's films here If you need to know a bit more about me… head to my "about" pageFor more such conversations subscribe to my Substack newsletter, it's where I interact the most!Get your copy of my book, This One Wild and Precious LifeLet's connect on Instagram Hosted on Acast. 2023 was quite a year and re-listening to many of the episodes I have realised just how much gold I have forgotten. So I've pulled out some highlights for you as a bit of an aide memoire.* Senior maverick at Wired Magazine, Kevin Kelly, discusses things he wish he'd done more of with his kids.* Author and adventurer, Beau Miles on trusting yourself.* One of the things that we all going to have to contend with at sometime or other is death and grief and the chat I had with thanatologist, Cole Imperi was really helpful in preparing for how to discuss those difficult things with out kids in a way that is clear and supportive.* When it comes to being deliberate CEO of Bellroy, Andy Fallshaw, helped describe the importance of defining our values and updating our beliefs.* Considering 50% of the people we know and love experience periods it was insightful hearing about the menstrual cycle from author and musician, Lucy Peach.* Following on from this theme we chatted with Nutritionist and naturopath, Stacey Curcio about the changes that happen at the other end of the spectrum from puberty for women, perimenopause.* Last but not least we had educator, author, mother and parenting counsellor, Lael Stone imparting her wisdom around looking beneath the behaviour.2023 was also a year of travel for us and one of the things that worked really well when we were on the road was the kids each had Spriggy debit cards. So instead of them borrowing our debit cards to pay for things, especially as cash is something we hardly use ourselves now, they each have a card that has their pocket money pre-paid onto. All of which can be checked through an app on your phone. You can even give access to family and grandparents etc in case they want to give money to the kids as well.If you're in Australia and looking for a way to better manage how your kids deal with pocket money and spending I can't recommend Spriggy enough. If you'd like to give it a go it's usually $30 to get a card for each child but if you click this link you can get $20 back when you sign up.Big hugRich Get full access to The Dad Mindset at www.thedadmindset.com/subscribe
Adventurer, filmmaker, outdoor education specialist, dad… Beau Miles has got lots of cool descriptors. He's also infectiously positive and creative, and he put all these things to amazing use in this very different, very outdoorsy and very wet episode. Exactly 345 km from their respective houses, on a little island in the middle of a giant hydro lake somewhere in the snowy mountains, Hamish and Beau recorded this episode while doing some pretty unique memory making with their kids. Having trekked all day to meet each other, with kids in tow and lugging a lot of gear - they chat about risk taking, learning on the job and about trying to do better as dads. And throughout the chat, it rains. Heaps! Very excitedly, you can find Beau's wonderful film about this adventure on his youtube page HERE. Beau is super honest about all the dadding stuff he's yet to figure out, but also has many words of wisdom from his time as an outdoor education specialist (which he has a PhD in) working with impressionable kids and young adults. On some of his more audacious adventures he's also spent many a day on his own, thinking… which we reckon has given him a bit of extra clarity that we can all take something from. For all things Beau, including films, live shows and books, head to https://beaumiles.com/ - Big thanks to Beau, Mitch and Jodi for making the adventure happen, which was recorded on the beautiful mountain lands of the Ngarigo people. --- And if this episode has inspired you to take a trip and make some memories with your kids, our friends at HERTZ have got you covered. During the height of the COVID pandemic, Mike Zippel bought a sea kayak to escape the Victorian 5km radius restrictrions. 9 months and one Beau Miles documentary later, Mike and a band of merry men, the Strait Yakers, launched their boats at Tidal River and headed for Tassie. Endless paddling, island camping, spear fishing, bocce playing,14 days stranded and one hairy shark encounter - this is a story of having a crack, even when others tell you you can't. I hope you are having a great start to 2023. I've been re-listening to some old archive episodes and I wanted to re-share this conversation with Beau Miles with you because there is so much gold in it. I don't know about you but I find myself at this time of year looking for adventure (obviously it's Summer here in Australia), but then in January, it's also a good time to be thinking of how we want to show up in the world and Beau has a beautifully authentic way of looking at life and, more recently, parenting.Something I missed on my first listen to this interview was how Beau describes the need for becoming a time management machine when you have a child. We all only have 168 hours in a week and as you take another slice out of the pie it leaves less time for the other slices. In this case Beau talks about splitting time with his wife Helen in parenting duties but also the importance of carving out time to fill your own cup, as Beau puts it, doing the things that “keep Beau being Beau”.I hope you enjoy this chat with Beau Miles as much as I did.If you haven't come across Beau's videos yet, they are amazing. Here are some of my favourites:Also, if you want some local adventure, check out Beau's book, Backyard Adventurer.Big HugRichPS Just out of interest, what are the things that keep you, you?#WesAnderson, #SophiaCoppola, #SteveIrwin, #Ritesofpassage, #BenQuilty, #JunkCabin, #Mileanhour, #BackyardAdventurer This is a public episode. Ski season is well underway across the country, with the East finally getting into the fun thanks to a short, 48-hour cold spell window in mid-November. Fifteen ski areas opened before Thanksgiving, the most since 2019 (and two ski areas opened on Turkey Day). We crave adventure to break up the ho-hum of our everyday lives. But busting ruts doesn't have to be all about conquering Everest or ticking off bucket list challenges. How much do you know about your local water way or river? In this edition of The Conversation Hour Richelle Hunt and co-host Beau Miles delve into why the health of rivers matters so much
In Sydney of 1960, a man sings acappella to workers on a building site. In Sydney of 2020, a woman sings acappella to TV cameras. In Sydney of 2022, a man wheels his kayak through a drain under a highway. This week we're looking at one of the greatest songs of the 20th century, "Ol' Man River", as sung by Frank Sinatra in TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY (1946). Racially, socially and environmentally, this masterpiece of songwriting has meant many different things to different people at different times. But one thing is for certain: it has no possible conservative reading. In the first half of this episode we also dig into other songs from the Jerome Kern songbook as featured in the film. Note: This episode features a discussion of Indigenous deaths in custody - in particular, that of Tanya Day. September 8th is Wear Pink for Tanya Day, as organised by her family. Find out more on their Instagram account, Justice for Tanya Day: http://instagr.am/justicefortanyaday. Homewrecker- my Youtube film, saw me dismantle an old house to get a collection of wood before it was demolished. In this episode, Mitch and I talk about the film from an on-the ground, then post production filmmaking perspective. It's a lively conversation with the two blokes who make my simple and sometimes odd ideas into a film.Click here to watch the film.Beau on Instagram & YoutubeMitch on InstagramWhere to find Heath
Beau Miles is one of the most authentic storytellers on YouTube. We are HUGE fans. We interviewed Beau to understand more about how he creates such compelling stories from seemingly the most simple ideas.
I get a lot of comments on YouTube. Thousands of em. Not unlike the miniature whiteboard I hung on my door at college, folks from all walks of life from all corners of the globe let it be known that I'm a good egg, an egomaniac, or in need of (or lack of) drugs. I thought ‘what an excellent basis for a Podcast'- comment on my comments! Heretis for my latest film, Marathon My Age.
OUR FIRST SUMMER REPLAY!!! Couldn't think of a person who's spirit of curiosity and exploration inspires me more.Really proud of this one. Enjoy! Today's guest is the eccentric adventurer, filmmaker and writer Beau Miles!! Beau has filmed some of the most inventive adventures out there including “The Human Bean”, “A Mile an Hour”, “Run the Line”, “Africa by Kayak” and many more. His Youtube channel is full of entertaining, quirky, impressive filmmaking and I am so grateful I was able to sit down and chat with him for this episode! Throughout his many adventures (and misadventures), Beau comes across as a person who is passionate for new experiences, who seeks understandings of the world both the internal and external, and someone who expresses his artistic side through creating some major challenges. At their core these adventures demonstrate an honest-to-goodness curiosity for life. From running an abandoned railroad line in his hometown to kayaking 2,000kms along the Souther African Coast to commuting 60+ miles to work by highway and waterway, Beau shows all the ups and downs of forging new experiences. In this episode we chat all about the lessons he's learned, his musings on adventure both local and exotic, and how he's evolved along the way. I hope you love this one as much as I did! Huge thanks to Beau and make sure you tune into all of the amazing projects he has released and everything that is on the way!!
Professor, filmmaker, writer, adventurer and self-confessed 'bloody good bearded bloke' Beau Miles joins Beyond Binary to discuss adventure and all it entails. His new book "The Backyard Adventurer" is available through Brio via all good outlets. His YouTube channel features full-length films of various adventures as well as shorter challenges (search Beau Miles) and he also has a podcast (Beauisms). Art of Manliness A lot of people feel like they've seen and done everything there is to see and do in their local area. They're bored of their daily routine, and contemplate going off on some grand adventure in a exotic locale. My guest would say that you don't actually have to wait until your next big trip nor go far afield to mix things up, and that adventure can be found right where you are, in your ordinary routines, the everyday landscape of your life, and even DIY projects, if you decide to approach them in a different way.His name is Beau Miles and he's an Australian filmmaker who documents his own small-scale adventures on YouTube, as well as the author of The Backyard Adventurer. Today on the show, Beau shares his experiments in proving anything can be infused with the challenge, intrigue, and fun which mark adventure, if you add in some intentional risk, difficulty, and simple what-the-heck quirkiness. He tells us about some of the close-to-home adventures he's executed, including walking and kayaking his 90-kilometer commute to work, reconnecting an old, long closed-down rail line by running its often hidden, overgrown path with a shovel in his hand, and making a paddle with scavenged wood. We then talk about how he created a gastronomical adventure for himself by eating his body weight in beans, and even turned tackling his to-do list into an adventure by pairing the crossing off of its entries with running a marathon in 24 hours. Along the way, Beau shares how backyard adventures help you better get to know your local area, how he deals with the police who sometimes check in on what he's up to, and how the next time you get some odd idea, you ought to just go for it, mate.Resources Related to the PodcastBeau's films/adventures mentioned in the show:Walking to WorkPaddling to WorkJunk PaddleHuman BeanRun the LineMile an HourAoM Article: My 8-Week Microadventure ChallengeAoM Podcast #120: Microadventures With Alastair HumphreysAoM Podcast #560: The Magic of WalkingTortilla Flat by John SteinbeckConnect With Beau MilesBeau's WebsiteBeau on YouTubeBeau on Instagram

Beau Miles, the Backyard Adventurer, poly-jobist, Doctor of Philosophy, author, is back to tell us about how he fuels himself on his days-long journeys. “If it's days and days at a time, and the slower you're going, and you're doing that longer burn where your heart rate's ticking along at 130 the whole time, and you're not really stopping, you're always moving. I'm basically just eating normally, whatever way I can. That decides, you know, I'll have a sandwich, I'll have some licorice, I'll have some dates, I'll have lots of dried fruit and nuts, and some salty potatoes or an egg. I'll just bloody eat anything,” says Beau Miles. In this episode, you'll learn: - Trust your body to tell you what you want and crave - How Beau is eating on his long expeditions - How eating only beans for 40 days and then running an Ultra Marathon ended Beau's cravings - The key companion is yourself. Beau Miles, the Backyard Adventurer, poly-jobist, Doctor of Philosophy, author, doer and self-described oddball, is an inspiration to those of us looking to discover adventure in our lives to turn our ordinary into extraordinary. Johnny Waite talks to him about the ways we can make our exercise fun without worrying about time or other unnecessary external factors. “Well everyone's got a body metric, right? With, ‘How much I weigh, how much I run, how fast I do it, how good I feel, how much sleep I've had, how much creatine powder I've put in my drink.' You know, it's all very measured. And I'm completely not that way. I've never been a Strava person or a measurement person. I just go on feel and whatnot. Which is still quite strategic. But it's just not as number driven, I suppose.” says Beau Miles. In this episode, you'll learn: - The love for going long on your journey and discovering the world - Enjoying the element of the unknown and fixing things along the way - How to find adventure close to home - The Backyard Adventurer philosophy - You're next adventure doesn't have to be extreme for you to test yourself and have fun Check out Beau's other activities Website - beaumiles.com YouTube - www.youtube.com/c/beaumiles Instagram - @beauisms SPONSOR This episode is brought to you by USANA Health Sciences. Beau Miles films contemplative adventures into the outdoors that combine the absurdist existential humor of Bill Murray with Van Gogh's affinity for landscape.Read the full article on The Outdoor Journal. He's a writer, a filmmaker, a carpenter, an ultrarunner, an adventurer. Miles' generalist skills in building, camping, and exploring afford him a freedom to create and a freedom to roam in a way that is truly enviable to those of us who feel stuck in our protracted comfort-seeking lifestyles. Up until this past year, Miles taught an outdoor education program at Monash University, one of Australia's top schools, Synthesizing philosophical lessons with practical skills.Miles is no longer an educator...officially. He's now a full-time YouTuber and dad. In his films on Youtube, He has the ability to extract profundities out of seemingly mundane moments that are equally motivating and hilarious. Miles immerses himself particularly in the faded glory of his environment to connect with its recent past on creative adventures in his home county of Jindivik, Australia with the goal to teach other would-be adventurers how to cram the ends of the Earth into their own backyard.Miles' book The Backyard Adventurer is now available as an audiobook read in Miles own voice. In this episode of The Outdoor Journal Podcast, Bea Miles discusses how he developed his distinctive concept of bringing adventure closer to home, why mistakes can sometimes be more interesting than successes, and what he has learned so far about himself from pushing his own thresholds in the outdoors. Welcome to episode 52 of Catchupcast! If we were releasing weekly, this would mark a year since we started the show! But, since podcasting is hard and we are busy, it's actually been three and a half years! Whoops! In this episode, Isaac and Ethan talk about a pizza hybrid, Isaac's adventure race, Ethan's peanut butter naïvete, riding bicycles, grad school, running with Elton John, their fear of wasting their time, and watching new generations grow up. Also, we revisit Beau Miles with a discussion on his film "Junk Films", which leads us to ponder artistic transformation and filmmaking styles. Finally, Ethan puts on his director hat (which has an ear of corn on it, as it happens) and gives some notes on sword fights. “Junk Films” by Beau Miles: https://youtu.be/xmj0sK0dCWU Buy Ethan's book! https://amzn.to/2SSSCf2 Check out our Twitter account (@KetchupCast) or send us an email at nocondiments@gmail.com! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ethan-mcatee/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ethan-mcatee/support

Beau Miles believes wholeheartedly that we're all weird. Through documenting a 4-day paddle to work, 24hrs in a tree, eating his weight in canned beans and drinking wine found on the side of the road, he helps exemplify a curious view of the human condition. He holds a PhD in Outdoor Education, he's a father and he's funny, authentic and insightful. Ethan and Isaac dig even deeper into the nostalgia well in this latest episode of Catchupcast, this time remembering musicals, attempts at wooing, prom, stolen ray guns, and a double date with a math teacher. The boys recount some of their fond childhood memories and go pretty deep into philosophy, God, life, death, and classic Disney films. Even when entering dangerous territory to discuss domestic abuse and the effects that it is has on kids, they do so with wit and humor. This episode is a little different than normal-- it's me being interviewed on the Off the Couch podcast by my friends Jonathan Ellsworth and Brendan Leonard. Brendan is likely familiar to many of you long-time listeners-- he joined me on the podcast a few years ago to discuss his writing career, his film "How to Run 100 Miles" and his blog Semi-Rad. Jonathan is the creator of Blister, an amazing online resource that includes outdoor gear reviews, a podcast network, and much more. Jonathan will be joining me on this podcast in the coming months. - Jonathan and Brendan were nice enough to invite me on Off the Couch to discuss a somewhat silly challenge that I imposed on myself on my 43rd birthday. Every hour on the hour for 24 hours, I ran a 1.3-mile loop around my neighborhood. In between laps, I did a long list of tasks that I had been putting off, including stacking firewood, cleaning and rearranging my basement, sending a ridiculous number of emails, and other mindless tasks. The whole thing was based on a film by a guy named Beau Miles who did a similar challenge in Australia. I stumbled across the film on Youtube and decided to give it a shot a few days later. I've linked to that film in the episode notes. - That birthday challenge was just one part of what turned out to be a wide-ranging conversation about a ton of fun and funny topics. We discussed the backstory on the Mountain & Prairie, my experiences running 50 and 100-mile races, some scary moments I've had running ultras, why I'm so obsessed with reading books, and some of my favorite books from 2020. This is the second longest podcast I have recorded. It was recorded in two parts, over two weeks, and as I explain at the end I haven't done any editing other than joining the two parts together, oh, and removing a piece of incorrect science, so there are some longer than usual gaps as I thought through what I wanted to say and also where it got a bit difficult. I'm not looking for sympathy in sharing this and some of you might find it difficult to listen to especially if you or someone you know has been badly affected by Covid-19. If that's you then I really don't mind if you skip this one. Feel free to reach out and share your thoughts with me. Filmmaker, speaker, writer and new-father, Beau Miles, on trusting yourself to be odd.
I've found that one of the biggest stumbling blocks stopping ordinary people from telling their story is that they don't really even know what their story is. Not yet knowing how their story ends or even how they want it end is another big factor. But it's more than that. We're all a work in progress...and so is our story. The true magic or your story will only really unfold as you start to tell it. Just like you, your story is constantly developing. So stop waiting to have the storyline all mapped out. Just start telling your story. PS: Thanks to Beau Miles for the inspiration. Check out Beau's AWESOME YouTube channel here to get a taste of what great storytelling is all about... https://bit.ly/37fRbLk #storytelling #journey #yourstory
This episode features Beau Miles. He’s a film maker, writer, PhD, and a man of many adventures, some paddling, others more unique and equally fascinating (what's it like to eat 1919 tins of beans over 40 days?). Today we’re talking about his attempt to paddle the incredibly complex, in so many ways, coast of Africa. Enjoy the interview with Beau!FInd Beau at:Beaumiles.comYou Tube-Beau Miles

If you know the name Beau Miles you’ll skip this & go listen to this episode straight away … for those that don’t Damo & Jez talk to a man known for his adventures, his humour and his down to earth perspective changing (& slightly odd) view of the world … his films cover his run on the 650km Alpine walking track, eating beans for 40 days (then running an ultra marathon) and the fabulous run a mile an hour while tackling tasks around his property that’s spawned copy cat attempts across the globe, this is a cracker chat.
Beau has an incredible eye for turning the ordinary into extraordinary adventures. His stories, films, and upcoming book, The Backyard Adventurer, will make you want to get out of your chair and do something “different”. His projects are simple but profound. From deciding to walk to work, to making an office out of junk material, to kayaking across the Bass Straight from Australia to Tanzania, Beau’s outlook is a mix of Thoreau, Kerouac, with a lot more comedic relief! Please be sure to check out his very entertaining YouTube channel here ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm325cMiw9B15xl22_gr6Dw ). Today's guest is the eccentric adventurer, filmmaker and writer Beau Miles!! Beau has filmed some of the most inventive adventures out there including "The Human Bean", "A Mile an Hour", "Run the Line", "Africa by Kayak" and many more. Beau Miles: Adventureman, Sea-Kayaker, Doctorate Philosopher, and content creator. In this episode of Watch Later, we discuss this legend's YouTube presence and talk about some of our favorites of his content.
“Adventure doesn’t require new places. It can be cultivated by exploring our immediate lives with greater curiosity.”Should we try to lead virtuous, principled lives… or do what feels good? Beau Miles makes a strong case for taking ourselves a little less seriously and having a lot more local fun. This backyard adventurer and wildly popular filmmaker (most often found up a tree, running a midnight marathon or eating his bodyweight in beans) reckons he doesn’t know much about anything. But beneath the self-deprecation, Beau is a wealth of ecological wisdom and a master storyteller, taking us right to the heart of what really matters in life. Get into this philosophical, tangential, slightly mad and marvellously contrarian conversation - then get out there. Beau Miles makes videos of his adventures doing things the rest of us wouldn't, like when he attempted to paddle around from one side of Africa to the other; when he ran over 650 km of the Australian Alpine Walking Track; and when he walked 90 km to get to work. "He is a filmmaker who spent his childhood looking for golf balls, secretly hoping to find a body part in the swamps and marshes. He still looks in odd places for much the same thing (and feeling). Being a redhead means that sunscreen, big hats, and old business shirts cloak him during outdoor life. He likes baths more than showers, homemade wine, and licorice. By god he likes licorice." He previously worked as an outdoor education lecturer at Melbourne's Monash University, and he has a book coming out this year about finding adventure in the everyday. A few weeks back I was flicking around the internet which I tend to do always looking at motivational, inspirational content – particularly video because I like to consume them in the mornings before I kick into my day and whilst doing so someone in my social media network shared a video from Beau Miles where he ran 3 miles to start and then 1 mile every hour on the hour for 24 hours. In between laps around his block, exactly one mile, he worked his way through a list of odd jobs from playing scrabble to building a table and everything in between. The video was called A MILE AN HOUR and it’s fantastic. I just loved it and reached out to connect. It turns out Beau is from Melbourne and actually teaches at Monash University so I dropped into the University when I was in Melbourne and we recorded this episode. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting with Beau and I reckon you’ll find heaps of gold in this episode. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The parkrun adventurers head to Sydney for some parkrun fun this week. Writer, filmmaker and adventurer Beau Miles joins us with behind-the-scenes insights into his RunNation Film Festival entry ‘A Mile an Hour'. And the Channel 5 News Crew get their rove on at Greenway and Toolern Creek parkruns.
Beau is someone who i have admired from a distance for a little while. After watching his movies over the past few years i was inspired by his sense of adventure and ability to find that adventure and reinvent it in his own backyard. Me summarising Beau would not do him justice, therefore i have gone down the copy paste route with his bio from his website http://beaumilesfilm.com/ Award winning filmmaker, average gardener, and hopeless at cooking eggs, Beau is mostly unfashionable. On the recent 350k crossing of Bass Strait in a sea kayak (from Australia's mainland to Tasmania) he was voted 3rd worst dressed in a party of 3. When 2 more expedition members turned up he was the worst of 5. It was agreed that if 395 more people joined the party, he would be the 400th best dressed. Being offbeat and NQR speaks volumes about how Beau sees the world. Honest, raw, funny, and at times critical, endears Beau to audiences when he talks about expeditionary life amidst the domesticity of home. Past experiences include paddling several thousand kilometers of Africa by Kayak, running 700km across the Australian Alps (Trials of Miles), and recently finding challenge and beauty in the everyday lands between home and work during Man vs Commute. This podcast also ended in a little challenge for myself, in which i'll be aiming to spend 24hrs solo, no phones, no contact, no people, nothing. I'll keep you posted. It's proven that our best ideas, most resourceful states, and highest periods of creativity come when we are relaxed and in “the flow”. The problem is we seldom experience this state as a conscious intention. Here's how to “goof off” productively. Spiritual Foundations The secret of becoming a better, more successful person – on automatic pilot. While I was at a conference a few weeks ago, the topic being taught was “speed to implementation”. Surrounded by a group of born achiever types, I felt swept up in the momentum of getting things done quickly. I went to my hotel room that night and furiously worked on completing a book manuscript, and by the time morning arrived my initial draft was done. Why was it that I was suddenly able, or motivated, to get the book done so quickly? Did I suddenly have abilities that I didn't have before? No. I was being carried by the momentum of the people around me. Motivated, cajoled, provoked. I was, in short, persuaded by the power of peer pressure. The people we surround ourselves with influence who we become. The point I'm trying to make is not a new one. It is simply that we tend to adopt the mannerisms, behaviors, and values of the people we spend the most time with. Want to become a better person? Be more successful? Be more punctual? Spend time with people who are more successful, more punctual, and who are in general the kind of “better person” you would like to be. “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn The interesting thing is, most of us do not consciously choose who those people are. What does the Bible say about this idea? Well we don't have to look far-in the book of wisdom known as The Proverbs, we find this… The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray. Proverbs 12:26 What if you consciously engineered being around five people who lift you up, instead of being around five people who pull you down? Feature Segment: Top 10 iPad Apps For Idea Entrepreneurs This past Sunday in church, I did the unthinkable. During the pastor's sermon, I opened up my iPad and began doodling. Heads turned. Questioning looks appeared on the faces of the people around me. Some people try to pretend they didn't notice. My wife simply nudged our friends Jim and Diane, who were sitting next to us, and shrugged. As if to say, “Well, that's our Ray.” But I wasn't ignoring the sermon or even being rude. I was taking notes in one of the top 10 apps that I use on a daily basis. My iPad has become such an indispensable tool that I even use it in church. Certainly, in my business as what I refer to as an “idea entrepreneur”, my iPad is central to my workflow. So this weeks podcast feature segment is all about the top 10 iPad apps I use in my business, and that I recommend to other idea entrepreneurs. I won't just give you a list of the apps, however. I'll also provide you with a description of how I use them, and even a few tips that may be helpful if you choose to use them as well. Omnifocus. This is my go to app for implementing GTD. It's expensive, but I still haven't found anything else I like better. And I've tried them all. Mail. This is simply the native app that comes with iOS. I've tried a few alternatives, but I really like the way Apple has implemented this app. Notifications turned off. Agenda. I find Apple's Calendar app disappointing, and learned about Agenda through Leo Laporte. I've been using it ever since, and I love it. Integrates with Google Calendar seamlessly. Mr. Reader. I track about 300 websites, mostly WordPress blogs. It's how I find new and interesting ideas, trends, and tidbits that I can share. This only takes me about 30 minutes a day, and that is all due to Mr. Reader. This app aggregates all those websites into one convenient place. Pocket. When I find something online that I want to save for later reference, I put it in Pocket. I may save notes or clippings for a blog post, a book chapter, or simply for my own reading pleasure. Evernote. Evernote is my universal filing cabinet, where I keep blog posts in progress, book outlines, swipe files, reference material, and more.It all synchronizes between my MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone. So all my stuff is available to meet anywhere, anytime. Indispensable tool. Penultimate. This is the app that left my moleskin notebook lonely and unused. It's a notetaking app, and it integrates with Evernote. Lose the paper, keep the handwriting, and remember everything. Kindle. I don't use my actual kindle device very much anymore. I carry around enough devices, and I use the Kindle app on my iPad to do most of my reading. I am considering trading my full-size iPad in for an iPad Mini. Reason: the mini seems easier to hold for long periods of time when reading. It also takes up less room in a briefcase. Or a pocket. Downcast. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and this is the app I use to do it. I wish it had a happier name. But I couldn't be happier with the app itself. MindMeister. I mind map just about every piece of content I write, every project plan, and… well, everything.I went through most every mind-mapping app available, and there are some good ones. I finally settled on MindMeister.I like the ability to share maps, I like the look and feel, and it exports to just about every other mind-map software format. So I can share my maps between MindMeister and MindManager (the app I use on my MacBook Pro). Bonus Apps: Olive Tree Bible Study App, Pages, Keynote. Listener Questions On this episode we heard from these listeners: Carey Green of ChristianHomeandFamily.com asked,”Are tags important to getting search engine traffic?” Beau Miles asked, “Will you be offering an audio version of your new book?” John Olson called in with a report on how he has been using my productivity tips from the podcast episode on getting a days work done in two hours, which was episode 43. I haven't been emphasizing the call in part of the show, but would love to field more listener questions and hear more of your success stories.
