In this episode of the Centurion Coaching Podcast, Robbie Britton and Dr. Jamie Pugh discuss how an athlete can get the most out of run coaching and what to look for in finding the right coach.
Centurion coaches Robbie Britton and Dr. Jamie Pugh discuss common misconceptions on what coaching is and what it means to them, as both coaches and athletes.
In this episode in the Centurion Coaching series, Robbie Britton asks James Elson about lessons learned from the 2025 Spine Race.
It's taken a wee bit of organising to get Dr Jamie Pugh on the podcast. Jamie is a senior lecturer and researcher at Liverpool John Moores University, Jamie is also a coach at Centurion Running. An expert in nutrition and all things to do with the gut, Jamie shares golden nuggets aplenty that will benefit runners and athletes of many disciplines. Coached by Robbie Britton, Jamie has a wealth of running expertise under his belt too, from a first marathon (Nottingham Robin Hood marathon) to training simply for fun, Jamie now is more interested in the world of ultramarathons, and has his sights set on some big things. How do you run when you have ankles made of Weetabix as a result of football injuries? Jamie talks us through ankle rolls and how he copes with these and how the technical trails bring that heady mix of joy and challenges. Being a coach and having specific information is one of Jamie's passions, coaching for Centurion Running since 2023, Jamie looks to bring and share knowledge from academia and his own experiences to invest in athletes across an array of distances to help them achieve their dreams, this is a fascinating listen. Jamie's work at Liverpool John Moores University is all about understanding what can be done to make improvements (big or small) to athletes at all levels. We also talk a wee bit about muscle biopsy, say what? Find out more by listening in... Testing what works for himself and athletes takes us to chatting about what we put in our gut to fuel us during our running activities, does what we put in deliver what we need? Jamie explains it all perfectly, you may listen to this section more than once! The chat is a latest product up=to-date conversation full of golden nuggets from someone in the know, we talk about athletes aid station management, how to deal with nausea, do you remember the cartoon the Numbskulls, maybe a first ever mention on a podcast? Lots of food (pun intended) for thought in here in a perfectly timed episode as we move towards the running season to come. See what others are doing, that's cool, but it might not work for you, there's so many things to think about and it's all discussed in our chat with Dr Jamie Pugh. How much has sports science changed in the last decade, and what's to come for sports science in the future...we get Jamie's thoughts. There's chat too about Jamie's recent running and his tinkering with shoes to find out what works for him, and Jamie's dialect dictionary entry, a belter...
Roles reversed this time as our Head of Endurance Robbie Britton asks our RD James Elson about his final race prep for the imminent 2025 Winter Spine Race.

Episode 37: Recorded June 1, 2023 "That was the enjoyable part -- walking a dog and dreaming of what might happen..." Robbie Britton, Australian racing Greyhound trainer, on growing up tending to his father's racing Greyhounds Show Notes Robbie Britton often measures his life as an Australian racing Greyhound trainer in hours and kilometers. Two hour haul to one track. Another airplane flight with five Greyhounds. Twenty-four hours to Brisbane. Such is the life of one of the most successful trainers in all of Australia. Robbie's a second-generation Greyhound trainer and breeder. His father paved the way for all the Britton kids to grow up with Greyhounds. His father's first was a black hound acquired in the 1960s. Robbie's job was to walk the hounds. His first Greyhound — Vixen — won on her second start, cementing his decades-long career as a trainer. When his father went on a long-term contract in the 1980s, Robbie took over the family's Greyhounds and transitioned from hobby trainer to professional trainer. He expanded Britton Racing into North America with a farm in Abilene, Kansas, home of the American Greyhound Hall of Fame. There, he became enamored with his American counterparts at the Fall and Spring meetings of the National Greyhound Association. In this episode, host John Parker and Robbie discuss training the Australian racing Greyhound, including breeding, training routines, and nuances of the track system in Australia. Robbie also shares his experiences breeding Greyhounds in America and finding homes for retired racing Greyhounds in Australia. Links Britton Racing (Facebook)

His thirst for adventure has led him on some incredible journeys including a 650km record breaking crossing from north to south of Jordan with fellow British ultra runner Dan Lawson in 2019. The film Lost Dogs & Englishmen captures this adventure perfectly. We talk about his book 1001 Running Tips for every runner (a must read!) and we discuss the excitement building around the World Mountain and Trail running championships in Austria later this week. Robbie first guested on episode 99 when we talked about representing Great Britain at the world 24 hour champs, being a coach, his master's degree in science, and his absolute love of adventure. Robbie has now added the title “author” to his repertoire, with the imminent release of his book 1001 Running Tips - The Essential Runner's Guide. Robbie is fresh from his first ultra distance running event in two years, full of a cold, and in excellent form. This is an engaging and energetic conversation which covers the evolution of coaching knowledge, athletic life in the new normal, the importance of academic rigour and also why you should keep your scabby paws out of the communal nuts at the aid station, ya filthy animals. On this week’s show Martin catches up with Runderwear’s CEO Rich Edmunds to find out how this month’s show sponsor has been getting on during Covid 19. Holly talks to 24 hour specialist and recent LEJOG WR holder Dan Lawson and Robbie Britton. Mo Farah breaks a record, parkrun is on its way back and you rate your runs and share your marathon talk kit around the world.
Kia Ora Whanau. Into our second century we are straight back to the mountains of Italy to speak to Sophie Grant. Sophie lived in the South Island until launching her OE in 2004 with her husband. Fast forward 16 years and Sophie has podiumed at Transgrancanaria, came fourth at Marathon des Sables, won the Lakes Sky Ultra and represented Great Britain at the world trail running championships. If this wasn’t enough, Sophie and George gave up their London home and have spent the last few years chasing adventure and the mountains in Europe. Sophie talks to us about her journey from her first half marathon to elite trail runner, her stance on gender equality, and increased representation in the sport, pulling exactly no punches. We discuss the impact that the pandemic has had on racing, training, and life - and how her focus is now even more firmly on adventure. Heck, Sophie was off to climb a mountain (like, a proper one) after our conversation with her coach Robbie Britton. Enjoy
Kia Ora Whanau. Joining us this week from the mountains of Italy is Robbie Britton. Robbie loves pushing himself, from constantly running around playing sport as a child, to completing master’s degrees, to coming third at the world 24 hour champs in 2015 and helping his GB team take the gold. Robbie, whose run at Turin clocks in as a DCR first at being two guest’s Greatest Run Ever, radiates enthusiasm and good cheer as he discusses his love of finishing races fast, how he kept the boredom of injury away by signing up for 1000km cycle races, and how he’s coped switching from being an athlete that does a bit of coaching, to a coach who does a bit of athlet’ing. We take a pause to consider Majell Backhausen carrying Robbie’s frozen form across Lake Baikal, and whether Majell looked down at Robbie in a comforting and beatific manner (SPOILER* He TOTALLY would have), as well as Robbie’s FKT in Jordan with the least stoked crew member ever.
