"We are aiming for a place where we can decouple the scorecard from our worthiness. It's of course the case that in trying to optimise the good, we will always be falling short. The question is how much, and in what ways are we not there yet? And if we then extrapolate that to how much and in what ways am I not enough, that's where we run into trouble." —Hannah BoettcherWhat happens when your desire to do good starts to undermine your own wellbeing?Over the years, we've heard from therapists, charity directors, researchers, psychologists, and career advisors — all wrestling with how to do good without falling apart. Please speak to a healthcare professional before making any changes to your diabetes management, or if you feel you could benefit from emotional support. This is part two of a two part series looking at hybrid closed loop insulin pumps. The first part is a technical overview, so be sure to start there!Ok it's time to get personal about all things hybrid closed loop! At first glance it might not seem like an obvious topic - to talk about the emotional impact of using an automated insulin delivery (AID) system to manage type 1 diabetes... it's technology, right? A gadget? A means to an end?But that ‘means' is a system that has, for me, taken away so much of the wight and number of diabetes decisions, and that ‘end' is not only better health outcomes, but a brighter, happier, calmer human who is better equipped to tackle life in all of its forms - being able to focus at work, spend time with family, or head off on the next adventure. It's not a cure, it's not a magic solution, but it is space between my thoughts, time between my alarms and a version of myself that I'd only ever caught glimpses of in my 28 years of living with type 1 diabetes. In this episode we get reallllly into my journey with type 1 diabetes tools - from injections and finger pricks, to moving onto a ‘regular' pump, and then my most recent switch to hybrid closed loop and the way it has turned down the volume on a lot of the diabetes noise, allowing me to sleep better, live more and just feel more human. So if you're curious about what these gadgets can do for your life, this is the episode for you.Disclaimer: I use the Omnipod 5 insulin pump with the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor as my personal AID system. I have a professional relationship with both Insulet (Omnipod) and Dexcom, but the content of this episode is separate from those relationships. What's a hybrid closed loop system? How does Automated Insulin Delivery actually work? Why is everyone talking about it? Is it really as good as everyone says for people with type 1 diabetes? What does artificial pancreas mean? These are the questions I'm hoping to help you with in today's solo episode! This is the first of a two part series digging into my experience of using an automated insulin delivery (AID) system, also known as a hybrid closed loop system, after 18 years on multiple daily injections and nine years on a ‘regular' insulin pump.I chat about the features and functionality of an AID system, specifically the Omnipod 5 with the Dexcom G6 as that's the setup I use and the only setup I have experience of. We cover what the three parts of the system are, how they interact with each other, how I interact with them and how I use the tool in the best way I understand to achieve improved time in range while doing a whole lot less diabetes business. In part two I'll cover the more emotional and psychosocial insights I've been able to gather from using the system after 28 years of living with type 1 diabetes. If you want more detail on my personal experience of all of this, I wrote this article that you may find interesting (please note, it cuts right to the feels!) https://notesonamoment.substack.com/p/the-biggest-thing-to-happen-to-meDisclaimer: I use the Omnipod 5 insulin pump with the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor as my personal AID system. Hey CEO…I don't know about you, but I was addicted to SPEED.No, not the drug kind, but the always-doing kind. You know- the always fitting more in, the forever checking more boxes, the constant being everywhere all-the time kind of speed- especially in my business cuz I had people to serve and goals to reach, you too? Except all that speed only resulted in one thing- HURRY SICKNESS. Perhaps you've heard my story of my diagnosis of Hystericus Globus where my ignoring of the signs I was always going too fast finally caught up with me. The same thing happened to my friend Jennifer Dukes Lee- except her doctor didn't try to hand her a pill to make it all go away. He told her it was a HEART problem, not as in the pumping blood kind, but the what she was running after kind. When I read her story in her book Growing Slow this summer and heard it took a diagnosis of hurry sickness for her too to finally embrace Growing Slow, I couldn't put the book down and had to invite her to be on the podcast. Jennifer Dukes Lee is the bestselling author of several books, including Growing Slow, It's All Under Control, and Stuff I'd Only Tell God. She's a fan of queso, bright lipstick, and singing too loudly to songs with great harmony. She lives on a fifth-generation family farm in Iowa, where she and her husband have made a life of growing crops, pigs, two beautiful humans, and an enduring faith. And you're about to listen in on a very real conversation as we walk through the 4 seasons, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter on the farm and in our hearts and explore the purpose God has behind each one. I have a feeling this is one you're gonna want to listen to again and share with your BIZ BESTIES who also may be addicted to speed and suffering (undiagnosed) from HURRY SICKNESS…cuz I think we all do, especially when trying to scale a business to 6 figures and beyond. Please note this episode of Type 1 on 1 contains honest discussions around addiction, mental health and diabetes complications. ‘I think type 1 diabetes is a selfish disease up until you realise that the resonant effect of diabetes just doesn't finish with you. I always used to say it's about me, it's my disease, but my wife was the driving force for me to realise my potential and it's all to honour what she saw in me when I didn't see it. I wouldn't be here without her.' Brett Taylor was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the 80s, aged just four years old. His first experiences were incredibly traumatic, and he felt the heavy weight of shame around his condition for decades. Alongside the rollercoaster of type 1 diabetes in an age without mass information at our fingertips, online communities or diabetes technology, Brett has faced addiction, mental health challenges and diabetes-related sight loss.Today Brett calls himself The Conscious Diabetic, focusing on taking what he describes as ‘conscious and active control' of his life one day at a time, with the help of Crossfit and his wife Vicky by his side.CONNECT WITH BRETT:Follow The Conscious Diabetic on Instagram. When you picture a thriving woman, do you automatically think about how much money she makes? To me, a thriving woman pays attention to every single aspect of her life, not just her business. She is surrounded by a community of like-minded women and is open to learning and growing. She cheers others on and understands that life works in seasons. The Birth of Thriving WomenI started Thriving Women because I wanted a group of women - like me - to connect, coach, and build a community with. When I began my business, I found it lonely, especially now that many of us are working from home. Interaction with others, especially like-minded women, is essential. More heads are better than one—for creative idea-making, problem-solving, cheerleading, and even giving a good butt-kicking when needed. There is an extraordinary power in community. How to build a great programStack it with more value: If you're not convinced of your offer or service, stack it with more value. Do your market research: Before launching any program, you need to understand your audience and know that they're going to buy what you have to offer. Evolve and adapt: Thriving Women has undergone several iterations over the years. Year one was a basic version and we built it out from there. The Magic of CommunityWe've seen the women in our community achieve some remarkable results - business growth skyrocketing, publishing books, going from a one woman business to managing a team of 12 people. But the one thing everyone keeps coming back for is the community. So, whether you're part of the Thriving Women network or another community out there, I encourage you to keep investing into the people around you. Keep being a cheer leader of others to help them flourish. That's what a thriving woman does!LINKS:Day with the QueenWebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://www.emmamcqueen.com.au/book/
'You have to care. If you don't care, it becomes a really miserable job. But that strength also means you take it home with you, and it opens you up to being spread very thin.'Dr Mike Natter is an artist and physician who, through this episode and through his work, centres the humanness of not only the patients in his care, but the peers and the medical doctors working tirelessly alongside him to ensure the people in his care are equipped to live better lives.Mike is an assistant professor of medicine and clinical endocrinologist, based in New York, and has himself been living with type 1 diabetes since the age of 9. An art enthusiast since childhood, Mike's illustrations are now an integral part of his work as a doctor. In this episode we chat about art's ability to break down barriers, and how this empowers Mike's patients by helping them to understand the physiology of their condition.Mike talks openly about overcoming imposter syndrome after moving from an arts education into medical school, the gruelling and incredibly emotional experience of being a medical doctor through Covid and the contradictions of a profession that helps people get better while making those who deliver the medicines to feel worse. We discuss the importance of compassion in treatment, what we can expect next from diabetes technology, and how support systems have helped Mike to ultimately become the doctor he is today. This is an incredible episode, and if you're anything like me Mike's empathy and insight will stay with you for days after you've heard him speak.CONNECT WITH MIKE:Follow Mike on Instagram. This week's audio offering is a solo episode from yours truly, in which I reflect on some of the mindset tools I've gathered up and honed on the long road that is living with type 1 diabetes. These skills are things I draw on regularly to help me navigate all the weird and wild situations I find myself in thanks to this tricksy chronic illness, on top of the medicine and devices.I chat about my perspective on and experience with getting uncomfortable, emotional wellbeing, diabetes content and information, trying new things, advocating for myself, self-compassion and shifting into a long game perspective.None of this is medical advice, but it was fun to reflect on how far I've come, and the tools that have helped me in my 28 years navigating the spicy road of type 1 diabetes. 34-year-old Jonty Brown is a humble Yorkshire man who went out for a little jog in lockdown… and ended up changing his entire life.He quickly hit marathon distances, and then Ultra Marathon distances - becoming the first person with type 1 diabetes to run across the UK. Jonty's now an Adidas running coach and co-founder of of Runlimited, a London running community on a mission to create the most collaborative and inclusive running collective on the planet.Jonty has used his talent to raise awareness for type 1 diabetes, as a way to give back to the healthcare team that looked after him so well after his diagnosis aged 12. Along with his family, they were a huge support when he was diagnosed with diabetes-related depression and anxiety as a teenager. In 2023 Jonty ran 102km around his beloved Victoria Park in Hackney to raise money for JDRF, celebrating the 102nd anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Jonty chats about his whirlwind journey since 2020, how he credits diabetes technology for taking his running to the next level, his advice for both shorter and longer runs with diabetes, and asking his mates to inject him at school.Jonty is such a likeable guy doing incredible things; even if you're not a runner, this is definitely an episode to dive into. Did someone say Season 12?!My first guest is the lovely Divya Joshi, a university student living in Cardiff, two years into life with type 1 diabetes after being diagnosed in 2022 at the age of 20. Since her diagnosis type 1 diabetes has not only changed the course of her studies, but she has also had to reclaim her sense of worth after unsolicited comments about her type 1 diabetes diagnosis left her questioning who she was, and even whether her boyfriend should stay with her. Full of wisdom and insight, Divya speaks from the heart about being rocked by her diagnosis, which led to taking a year off from her studies to focus on getting to grips with the condition - a decision I completely admire and has helped her to move past the self doubt and into a new chapter, becoming a Diabetes UK Young Leader and speaking on the Welsh Parliament Stage. Now studying a different degree and reclaiming her university experience with a renewed understanding of both her health and herself, we discuss the ways in which diabetes has affected Divya's life, the resilience it's built and the purpose she's found in articulating her struggles through the beautiful spoken word poems she shares on her Instagram page, @creativebydivya. Divya also offers some practical tips around life at university, and reveals what it was like to appear in the Netflix series Sex Education. CONNECT WITH DIVYAFollow Divya on Instagram. ‘Stop looking for yes and no answers, and start trying to see the nuance. Pay attention to you and knowing yourself.'Tony Coffey, also known as @trainbloom to his 400,000 instagram followers, is a personal trainer and co-host of the Fitness Stuff (For Normal People) podcast living in San Diego, California. When he's not at Chipotle, Tony dedicates his time to combatting the mountain of fitness and nutrition misinformation out there with his no nonsense, informative and very funny evidence-based videos online.Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes through primary care as a college freshman, it was very much suggested that diabetes would be a defining part of his identity. Already a fitness enthusiast, Tony's diagnosis cemented his professional path, and he has used himself as his own science experiment ever since to defy the definition of diabetes he was given at the age of 19.‘You're going to go through some crappy, crappy days,' he says of taking responsibility for your own condition. ‘But once you get a handle on it, I don't know that anything else could build your confidence as much as type 1 diabetes does. All of the other problems in your life start to seem quite small, and it's stuff no-one else in my life has had to deal with.' In this episode we chat about diet, nutrition, taking on and standing out in the fitness industry, and stepping back from the frustrating moments of life with type 1 diabetes. As data driven and research focused as they come, Tony reveals the single easiest thing you can do to help your blood sugar management (and it's NOT running marathons or becoming a bodybuilder), as well as what Tony thinks of the rising popularity of glucose sensors for those who aren't living with diabetes. Hint: He's not a fan. Please do yourself a favour and take a look at Tony's Instagram account. 'You're more than a blood sugar, and that's your excellence.' Today we meet certified diabetes royalty! Maryann Croft Maloney has lived with type 1 diabetes since 1978 - the same year she also got married and became pregnant with her first child. Maryann went through a large part of that pregnancy without a glucose meter, but has always moved through life handling whatever it - and diabetes - has thrown at her without an ounce of self-pity. Through the incredible lens of living with type 1 diabetes for almost 50 years, we discuss the advances in diabetes management Maryann has witnessed after starting out with only long-acting insulin, but conversely the anxiety that has been prompted by having so much data at her fingertips. It was 20 years before Maryann met anyone else with type 1, and we really dig into the perspective that living with the condition has given her. From not worrying about the small stuff, to life as a test of resilience, to her quest for perfection and the importance of asking questions in the pursuit of a better quality of life, Maryann's honesty and insight makes for an extraordinary listen. We also talk about her life-changing experience at Diabetes Training Camp, and the wisdom and relief it has offered her. We live in a time of disillusionment. Trust is waning in the public sphere, religious affiliation is on decline, and some feel a deep tension or ambivalence about their community—whether that's a region, family, political party, or spiritual tradition. How should we think about the experience of disillusionment, particularly the threat of becoming disillusioned with faith?Aimee Byrd, author of several books on contemporary issues facing Christianity. And after her own experience becoming disillusioned with the church, she wrote her most recent offering: The Hope in Our Scars: Finding the Bride of Christ in the Underground of Disillusionment. In this conversation, Aimee Byrd joins Evan Rosa to discuss: how to diagnose and understand disillusionment—particularly disillusionment with church and the trappings of Christian faith & culture; as well as the problem of spiritual abuse and the broken forms of faith that allow it to persist. She explores the Old Testament's Song of Songs—exploring how it honors the depth of human longing and desire. She considers how beauty validates our yearnings and invites us toward a lasting faith and gives us new sight and recognition, and ultimately takes a hard look at what it means to explore our wounds and scars in search of hope and faith.About Aimee ByrdAimee Byrd is the author of many books, including her latest, The Hope in Our Scars: Finding the Bride of Christ in the Underground of Disillusionment (2024).Show NotesThe Hope in Our Scars: Finding the Bride of Christ in the Underground of Disillusionment by Aimee Byrd (https://zondervanacademic.com/products/the-hope-in-our-scars)Steven Heighton's The Virtues of Disillusionment (free PDF download)Unpacking disillusionment. When it comes to diabetes advocates, few are held in such regard as Renza Scibilia. And rightly so, as for more than two decades she has travelled the world to ensure the voices of people with diabetes are not only acknowledged, but listened to and understood by everyone from world-renowned healthcare professionals to pharmaceutical bosses. Diagnosed in 1998, Renza's activism started out through the Diabetonic blog, published from her desk at home in Melbourne, Australia. But such is her determination and motivation to create meaningful change, she is now Director of Community Building & Communications at Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF), Head of Advocacy at #dedoc°, and in her spare time (when she's not baking or on a plane), she runs a health consultancy. As much as Renza works hard to makes sure she has a seat at the table, she works even harder to ensure that there are seats for the rest of us too, shaping outcomes for everyone who has been forced through lived experience to cruelly understand what it really means to live with type 1 diabetes. 'When insulin has been around for 100 years, lack of access should not be happening,' she told me. 'It's perfectly ok to feel overwhelmed by the personal burden of type 1 diabetes and what we are living with, but I do also feel the weight of what type 1 diabetes is on a bigger scale. Sometimes I think it's ok to feel hopeless because of that, because in many ways it's what drives me.' This generous and heartfelt conversation is such a treat, and a reminder of the power we collectively have for change when the right people are shaping the conversation. Everybody's type 1 diabetes diagnosis is memorable, but Alex Durussel-Baker's was particularly far removed from her routine as a 30-year-old business owner living in Edinburgh. Alex was on an aeroplane runway, about to take off for a work trip to the States, when her doctor called with the results of a blood test. Alex subsequently spent three days in hospital in New York, before attending the work conference anyway. This isn't a movie, this is Alex's life, and it was once she returned to Scotland that the reality of both the permanence and the inconsistency of living with this complicated condition took hold. Since that diagnosis in 2018, Alex's path to acceptance has taken many turns. During a period of burnout and depression, she started to process events in the way that she knows best - through creativity, specifically graphic design. A 100-day project to make diabetes more visible by subverting famous posters led to the birth of Diabetes By Design. Six years later, today sees the launch of DByD Fest - a 10 day programme of events, a design exhibition and panel talks all led by Alex. It's all entirely free for you to visit at Custom Lane in Leith, Edinburgh, from June 13th-22nd 2024. This episode is a celebration of the ways in which this event will address the multitudes of misunderstanding that are unfortunately part of life with type 1 diabetes, but also an honouring of Alex's lived experience. We discuss so much in this episode, including motherhood, the effect that diabetes has had on her relationship, and how absolutely messy this all is, no matter how far into the journey you are. You can get involved in Alex's work by giving your feedback on her soon to be launched Companion Card toolkit, co-designed by healthcare professionals and people living with type 1 diabetes to open up conversations about this undoubtedly messy condition. Thank you so much to Alex for speaking to me with such candour and humility. Now 12, Tara is balancing steadily letting Tahlia live a little more independently from Mum and Dad, while ensuring she remains safe from the riskier sides of life with type 1 diabetes. In this insightful episode, Tara speaks candidly about the family's experiences - from herself being given a diabetes textbook as her daughter was diagnosed (and tested before Tahlia was allowed home!), feeling like a failure when diabetes technology wasn't working for them, to delegating diabetes appointments to her husband Mark after some frustrating interactions with Tahlia's care team. We also speak about the interesting dichotomy between the experience Tara has as a Mum with multiple personal touch-points with the health system, and someone who also lives and breathes primary care in her professional life. When you speak to 27-year-old Avani Ved, you encounter an intelligent, focused, determined and thoughtful woman whose mission in life is to help people. She demonstrates this both in her professional career as a nurse and via her Instagram page, which spreads encouraging messages about life in general, as well as life with type 1 diabetes. But her motivations come from some altogether more challenging and upsetting personal experiences as a child living with type 1 diabetes. Despite facing cultural stigma and feelings of not being good enough since her diagnosis in 2005, Avani has somehow found the resolve to turn her pain into her power. ‘When I was nine there wasn't a lot of people in my culture that understood what type 1 diabetes was. That was a huge challenge and a huge barrier to overcome. I heard a lot of comments at nine… but at that age you're not going to sit there and explain to a 40-year-old woman what type 1 diabetes is.' Running parallel to those difficult experiences, Avani has thankfully always also had an incredible support network around her, and it's thanks to positive interactions with medical staff in the hospital she was sent to as a little girl that Avani knew from the day of her diagnosis she was going to be a nurse - despite not knowing what being a nurse actually meant. There is so much to learn from this uplifting and honest episode, and I'm grateful to Avani for sharing her story as part of her mission to, in her words, ‘become the person that I needed when I was nine years old.'CONNECT WITH AVANI:Follow Avani on Instagram. It is apparent from the minute you meet James Ridgeway that he is one of life's good guys. A Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Education Research Associate living in Leicestershire with his partner Stacey and son Alfie, it was his own type 1 diabetes diagnosis in 2012 while on shift as a student nurse that set him on his professional path. James is incredibly passionate about diabetes education, and as well as supporting diabetes patients in clinic through his role as a DSN, part of his job is delivering diabetes education to other healthcare professionals through the renowned EDEN network. He also runs an innovative Podding peer support group to help people connect with others living with type 1 diabetes. Through both living and working with type 1 diabetes, James is well aware that on average people with diabetes have just one hour of healthcare professional support each year. With his blend of lived experience, healthcare knowledge and belief in the importance of peer support, this episode offers a unique and encouraging perspective on living a better, less isolated life with type 1 diabetes. My guest today are Lochlan Murdoch and his mum, Lesley. Lochlan was just four when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Now 15, Lochlan has always had a deep love of football, but a serious leg injury at the age of nine left him unable to play his beloved sport. The subsequent impact on Lochlan's blood sugars and his mental health inspired him to organise a stadium marathon, walking 28 miles in four days around the Scottish Premier Football League stadiums. But that was just the beginning - in 2020, the charity Lochlan's Legacy was lauched with the aim to break barriers and reduce stigma around type 1 diabetes in Scotland and beyond. In the few short years since the charity's inception, it's already made an immeasurable difference spreading knowledge and awareness of type 1 diabetes. With the help of some national funding, the support of Lochlan's beloved Kilmarnock FC and his mum Lesley working tirelessly for the charity as well as countless other orgnanisations, there's no stopping Lochlan who says, 'I just want to help people.'CONNECT WITH LOCHLAN'S LEGACY:Visit Lochlan's Legacy website.Follow Lochlan's Legacy on Instagram.Follow them on X.Join the Lochlan's Legacy Facebook page.JOIN THE TYPE 1 ON 1 COMMUNITYWe've got an Instagram account! This is no ordinary episode, but Aviation Medical Officer and Boeing 737 First Officer Dr Jeremy Robertson is no ordinary man. This undeniably extraordinary story takes us on a 14 year journey, back to 2010 when 31-year-old Jeremy, from Sydney Australia, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes while on a training course in the United States. He was still wearing his uniform when he was told to hand over his pilot's licence in the doctor's office, such were the restrictions banning type 1s from flying commercial planes at the time. He was also weeks away from getting married. Heartbroken, Jeremy returned to Australia the next day, and soon turned his attention to retraining as a medical doctor. Fast forward many years and having gathered an incredible amount of medical knowledge, as well as his own experience as a type 1 and a precedent in regulation changes set by the UK and Canada, Jeremy set about gathering the hundreds of hours of flying data required in smaller aircraft to propose a case to change the medical restrictions in Australia. Step by step, over many years and with many setbacks along the way (not least a global pandemic that halted the entire aviation industry), Jeremy checked in as the first officer of his first commercial flight in 14 years just a few weeks ago, having successfully changed the restrictions to obtain a class 1 aviation medical. In doing so, he's changed the prospects for aspiring type 1 pilots in Australia, forever. I told you it was extraordinary... CONNECT WITH JEREMY:Follow Jeremy on Instagram. ‘We can do everything with type 1, but we can't do everything.' Beth Edwards is the kind of person with whom you instantly feel safe and seen. Through her work as a nutritional therapist, she encompasses a holistic approach to health, food, stress and type 1 diabetes in order to help people living with the condition reset their relationship with food. Beth has helped countless people break free of the stigmas, shame and isolation that can overwhelm people with diabetes, particularly in relation to the complex relationship many have with the foods they eat, helping them to discover a sense of empowerment and enjoyment at mealtimes.Beth has been able to blend her psychological training, nutritional expertise and her own lived experience in her practice, having lived with type 1 diabetes since she was nine years old. In this meaty episode (excuse the pun!) we chat through Beth's own journey with her type 1, her motivations for wanting to help people with diabetes in ways that are often out of reach within the time constraints of hospital appointments, as well as ways in which people can start addressing their food and glucose level frustrations. She also offers loads of practical advice around mealtime rituals, dosing timing, insulin sensitivity, sleep, post-meal spikes and so much more. This episode filled my cup right up - I hope it satisfies your emotional cravings too! Look who it is, Ami Bennett has returned to the podcast airwaves! In a break from regularly scheduled programming, my type 1 friend Ami and co-host of spin-off series Type 1 on 1: The Diaries pops in to give us a little life update, as it has somehow been a whole year since she said hello on the podcast. We have a lovely catch up and hear about how she's getting on with her hard-won insulin pump 18 months in, and then she grills me on my new gadget - the hybrid closed loop system, which it's fair to say has had quite the impact on my life. It's not all about gadgets though, as in true Jen and Ami style there are plenty of escapades to report and a silly joke or two. We talk about how Ami's disappearing hypo symptoms have conversely made her less anxious about having them, whether there is such a thing as a pleasant hypo experience (chocolate in bed, anyone?) and we find out Ami's less than affectionate names for her different basal programmes. You've got to keep it entertaining, right? If you fancy some deep chats with a couple of friends as well as a bit of light relief when it comes to the chaos that is type 1 diabetes, you're in the right place! Here's the article I recently wrote about switching to a hybrid closed loop if you fancy a read.CONNECT WITH AMI:Follow Ami on Instagram.JOIN THE TYPE 1 ON 1 COMMUNITYWe've got an Instagram account! Not everyone loves a deep chat as much as I do, but documentary film maker Lisa Hepner really went there with me as we plunged the depths of the rollercoaster that is type 1 diabetes, in an episode I've been thinking about eve since we recorded. In a way I felt like I was speaking to someone I already knew. Lisa knows more about type 1 diabetes than most. Not only has she lived with the condition since she was diagnosed in 1991 aged 21, she spent over a decade filming, writing, directing and producing The Human Trial - a film that closely follows the progress of a radical stem cell trial hoping cure type 1 diabetes for good. As heart-wrenching as it is inspirational, The Human Trial follows the personal journeys of both the patients and the researchers who risk everything to go first, in a bid change the future for all of us living with this condition. It left me deeply confronted and incredibly hopeful, and in this episode we get the inside story. Moataz Hisham is a full-time engineer, part-time fitness coach and unofficial diabetes superhero for young people with type 1 diabetes in Egypt. Childhood in Alexandria was interrupted when Moataz was diagnosed with type 1 in 1997 at the age of 11, but his pharmacist parents quickly helped him to adapt to not only the physical challenges of type 1 diabetes, but the psychological difficulties too.Despite this incredible support and unwavering inner resilience, Moataz spent years hiding his type 1 from his friends due to misconceptions he faced from his peers. It would take until 2018 and a DKA experience for him to reach the final acceptance stage of what he calls ‘The 5 Phases of Diabetes'. Throwing himself into research, education and Crossfit, Moataz found new strength to open up about his condition. Using just his phone, he launched an online format called ‘Diabetips' from his son's bedroom in 2022 to share some of this wisdom. But in a very short amount of time, the platform evolved far beyond that bedroom. ‘Diabetetips Talks' is now a professional studio production in which Moataz interviews young people with type 1 diabetes to make sure children living with the condition can see themselves reflected, showcasing what he describes as ‘the unbreakable human spirit of young people living the diabetes journey'. This is such an interesting and inspiring episode. Moataz lights up when he talks about sharing stories with young people, empowering children with type 1 diabetes AND their parents to understand that ‘we are different, not less.' SummaryYou're going to need the Christian encouragement of others in your small group as you seek to live like Christ. IntroductionLiving a life of holiness is difficult. We all make mistakes. We all fail at times. None of us is perfect! Finding Christian Encouragement As We Seek HolinessSometimes, this can be very discouraging. We want to live for God and become more like his Son, Jesus Christ, but sometimes it can seem impossible! You need to find other like-minded people who can offer Christian encouragement in your quest for holiness. Holiness is Found in CommunityWe cannot pursue holiness on our own. Why? Because God wired human beings for relationship, for community. To experience the joy and peace - the shalom - God promises us in Isaiah 55:12 requires the involvement of other people in our lives to give us the Christian encouragement we need. Christian encouragement in the community of small groups is God's antidote to discouragement when it comes to living the life of holiness. Your small group can help you keep the right perspective when you fail God and make mistakes. They can see and encourage the efforts you are making. They can also remind you of God's truth. He says, through the Apostle Paul: So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1 NLTYou're going to need the Christian encouragement of others in your small group as you seek to live like Christ. In the same way, they are going to need your encouragement too. Find your small group today! Think It OverThink through the following: If you are not yet in a small group, who could you find to join together and encourage each other? If you are in a small group, which friend needs a word of Christian encouragement from you today? There's a new episode of Battle Drill Devotional every Monday through Friday. I was inspired to record a transmission detailing this potent cosmic moment. If you want a visual, you can find the last quarter Moon chart here (the PDF will automatically download when you click the link). The astro-energies this week are EXTREME. Today's last quarter Moon in Sagittarius opposes Mars and squares Neptune, stirring up potential confusion, distraction, overwhelm and exhaustion. The higher potential? We're being called to release what's distracting us, what's sucking our vital life force, what's no longer in alignment with our deeper soul selves - and to listen to and honor our intuitive knowing, our longings, our dreams for a more beautiful future.Tomorrow Mars will (at last!) emerge from its retrograde shadow, ending its 6-month retro cycle (can I get an amen??). Next week's Spring Equinox and Aries new moon will be major catalysts for acting on the insights and wisdom we've gained over the past six months, and launching powerful new life directions. If you missed my webinar all about Mars retrograde - where I go into how you can work effectively with Mars-Neptune, and much more - you can find the replay here.I also want to offer some writing prompts for journaling and reflection, to help you deepen into and uncover the gifts of this time. These prompts are from a Mars retro writing retreat I led with my brilliant writer friend Jen Violi last December. (FYI, Jen and I are offering another mini-retreat combining astro, writing & ritual on April 1st - Fire Words.)* How are grief, sorrow, and surrender part of this Mars Retro journey for you? What gifts might be washing ashore for you from the ocean of sorrow? What might you need to release into the outgoing tide?* Write a love letter to yourself from Mars or Neptune. Let yourself write in the voice of one of these wise planet ancestors. What do they want you to know? You might start with “Dear ____, I have something to tell you…”* In what ways are you already tending your inner fire/ feeding your desires? What might you add to your repertoire?* Where or what or who is the source of your life force? What are 3 -5 possible practices you might explore to reconnect with source in the coming week?I also want to let you know that the new incarnation of Emily's Astro-Verse is about to start! I consider this group to be my “inner circle” of astro-friends.When you sign up for the 6-month Astro-Verse, you'll receive:* All of my new and full moon recordings (12 total)* An exclusive monthly group livestream on Zoom, where you can ask your astro-questions and share how the wild energies are showing up in your world* A discounted rate on personal readings* And the opportunity to share your offerings with our amazing communityWe'll start with the Aries new moon, which I'm planning to send out this week! Everyone is welcome, and the group is offered on a sliding scale. Join the Astro-VerseAnd finally, save the date for a special, FREE event next Monday: The Soul of the Equinox - A Visual & Astrological Exploration of the New Season. I'm teaming up with my friend Rita Roberts, an intuitive artist who will channel the Equinox energies and do a live drawing while I discuss what I see in the Equinox chart. We'll meet at 2pm Pacific/5pm Eastern for about an hour on March 20th No need to sign up - I'll send out the Zoom info before we meet. You can read all about it on my blog.Wishing you ease, support and GRACE as you surf the tides of this wild and watery week! This is a public episode. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you. • • •“Small towns often have, if they have anything, an assumed gospel. Don Carson wisely says that, “one generation believes the gospel, the next generation assumes the gospel, but the next generation denies the gospel.” But, with the data so clearly showing sin as reigning in small towns, we have to question if they haven't moved past an assumed gospel to a full-blown denial of the gospel.” - Forgotten Church • • •Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NLT6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Repeat them again and again to your children. COMMUNITY IN THE CALMCalled to Community - Part 4Lead Associate Pastor Jessica Fernandez, PhDJuly 24, 2022The time to build a storm shelter is not in the storm, it's before the storm! What happens when we find security in the routine of our lives? When we become comfortable with the mundane and we find excuses not to engage in community because it doesn't fit into our schedule. The time to prepare for a crisis is before it happens, in the monotony of life. So, what's your excuse?Series: Called to CommunityWe often use phrases like “let's do life together!” Yet, what does that really mean? This series will discuss the importance of being connected with others in community whether we are in crisis or not. But not all community is created equal and may come in ways that we have not thought about before. God calls us to be connected so that we can provide support, encouragement, and objective perspectives as we live our lives together through all life's circumstances.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. When thinking about holy apathy, have there been times in your life that you recognize now as times of holy apathy?2. When identifying some reasons for not joining a group, which one resonates with you the most?3. Today, we have discussed various ways for you to be in community and create community. Wisdom in CommunityCalled to Community - Part 3Springcreek Church | Lead Chaplain Robin RussellSunday, July 17, 2022It's always fun to hang out with folks our same age, with similar interests. There are good reasons for that. But there are great spiritual benefits in also having wiser, older friends to help deepen our faith journey. Finding the Right Community: This Ain't ItCalled to Community - Part 2Springcreek Church | Lead Associate Pastor Jerrid FletcherSunday, July 10, 2022There are communities (ie. relationships, friendships, work environments) in our lives that once served us well, that no longer serve us. The community where we were thriving in at one time, we are no longer thriving in. Then, there are communities where God never intended us to be a part. To continue to grow, we must learn where to find community and where NOT to find community!Series: Called to CommunityWe often use phrases like “let's do life together!” Yet, what does that really mean? Community in Calamity: Called to Community - Part 1Springcreek Church | Lead Associate Pastor Jessica Fernandez, PhDSunday, July 3, 2022What do you do when you're in crisis? Do you isolate yourself? Do you hide when everything is falling apart? In the book of Ruth, Naomi finds herself in a crisis when her husband and her two sons die. Without anyone to care for her and her daughters-in-law, she decided to go back home because she understood the power of community. Her community sustained her during this difficult time but not just her, but for her daughter-in-law, who was considered an outsider to the Jewish people. This community birthed hope in their lives when the situation and circumstances seemed hopeless.Series: Called to CommunityWe often use phrases like “let's do life together!” Yet, what does that really mean? Contract Heroes with Nick RishwainIn this installment of Contract Heroes, we sat down to chat with fellow legal tech podcaster, Nick Rishwain. Nick started his show, LegalTechLIVE, in 2015, when the realm of legal technology was still in the process of ramping up. Though he is currently on hiatus from the show, they have a log of 130 episodes, all showcasing fascinating interviews with founders of legal tech companies and startups. Nick first became interested in exploring the expanding universe of legal tech as a result of his employment with Experts.com, a marketing platform for expert witnesses and business consultants. The site started out somewhat akin to a directory but has since evolved into much more, allowing expert witnesses to market themselves to attorneys, businesses, and industries, and even offering flat fee searches for attorneys who do not want to perform searches themselves. Nick has been working there in a legal tech role for about 12 years and has done his podcast for 7 years. The idea for LegalTechLIVE struck him because he wanted to get to know other people in the industry and become more involved in the legal tech space. By promoting founders and the new, exciting things they were working on, he was able to network and build a community.Read on to hear some of the highlights from our chat with Nick, including his perspective on how legal tech has evolved over the years and some excellent tips for marketing with lawyers. The Evolution of Legal TechSince Nick has been involved in legal tech for 12 years, we wanted to kick off our conversation by hearing about the changes that occurred in the industry from his perspective, as both a podcaster and a member of the workforce. He explained that when he started it felt like most products were primarily eDiscovery, law practice management, or case management, but the industry has broadened significantly since then. There were only a few AI-based legal research tools receiving attention back in 2015, with CLM not even being a phrase utilized until a few years later. The startup space for legal research and IT solutions for offices, in particular, was not very vibrant when he first began the podcast. Nick stated that there has been both a broadening and a narrowing when it comes to the evolution of legal technology. The variety of tools and the number of concepts that now fall under the blanket of legal tech have most certainly broadened. Tools now are created with any number of unique purposes in mind, whether they are geared more toward a specific area such as compliance or justice, or they are designed to perform a specific function like managing text communications between lawyers and clients or innovating court reporting and legal intelligence. Some tools are created to go directly to the consumer while others are meant to be more enterprise-driven. All-in-all, the market is saturated with a huge amount of software, with many more options than were available in 2015.The narrowing aspect comes into play when you consider what companies are prioritizing. As more options for tools become available with each one having its own unique perks and quirks, organizations can be more specific about what they want their legal tech software to accomplish within the company. An organization no longer needs to select from one or two extremely broad tools but rather can hone in on software that prioritizes the current and future needs of the company. In this way, legal tech solutions have both blossomed and somewhat narrowed in their scope.Building a CommunityWe asked Nick to tell us a little bit about how he built up the community around LegalTechLIVE and how he went about finding guests to interview at the start. He explained that he was always most interested in speaking with legal tech founders before they became a big deal, those who were working on startups or series A companies. He did plenty of reading about the legal tech realm in general, which led him to find a number of people he could reach out to for interviews. He also utilized Google Alerts and social media like Twitter and LinkedIn to build connections with his peers and start making friends in the industry. In fact, he found searching through the legal tech hashtag on Twitter to be helpful as well.Nick also stated that he typically sought out people who had new, exciting ideas about legal tech. There may have been hundreds of startups that all had the same concept, but Nick chose to highlight those who stood out with something more unique that had not already been done a thousand times. For example, many of the tools and services existed outside the legal realm already, but creative innovations needed to be made when adapting that software to work specifically for legal practices. Adding legal to a solution is essential if you want to be able to sell it to attorneys, and incorporating those aspects seamlessly could be quite difficult.Laughing, Nick added that his superpower, if he has one, is promoting people and making friends. Since the start of his career as a podcaster, he has been able to help promote a number of founders and has even kept in touch with some, creating long-lasting friendships. Thanks to his expertise and the way he has built his reputation, some guests have even started to come to him to be interviewed instead of him reaching out first.Tips for Selling to LawyersTo wrap up our chat with Nick, we asked him to give a few tips to our viewers who may frequently find themselves trying to sell to lawyers. Ironically, his first tip was not to sell to lawyers at all, if you can avoid it! Instead, look for other stakeholders in the company, even paralegals or legal assistants. After all, many solutions will be enterprise solutions that help departments outside of just legal, so getting your foot in the door with these other departments may make it easier to finalize the deal. He also advised not to call lawyers on the phone to try to sell to them, as this can eat into their already packed schedules and leave a bad taste in their mouths. Keeping them in your email campaign and waiting for them to make the move on their own time is usually a better option. The final tip Nick provided was to attempt to integrate your legal tech solution into the company's existing workflow, such as Microsoft Word or Outlook. Software that fits rather seamlessly into the established practices may sometimes be received more openly than stand-alone software. For more exclusive chats with expert guests in the contract lifecycle management sphere and valuable legal-tech advice, check out past installments of Contract Heroes and subscribe so you don't miss an episode! If you have any questions for our guest, Nick Rishwain, he is available on Twitter @LegalTechLIVE. You'll also have fun along the way, so join our community today!Ratings & ReviewsWe process reviews from our community to make an estimate of how eco-friendly cafes' consumer-facing practices are. For example, does a cafe primarily serve drinks in reusable mugs or disposable cups, and do they allow customers bring a thermos? To turn reviews into a rating out of 5, we apply estimates for the environmental cost of producing, cleaning, and disposing of heavily used items. We continually update our environmental cost model as new research becomes available.ImpactWe broadcast your reviews to the whole community, empowering you to have an impact well beyond making your own consumption sustainable. So many of our businesses are created from a place of trauma. Oftentimes, we create our business around an experience we went through in an attempt to help prevent others from having the same experiences that we did. However, we have to come to an understanding and realization that it does yourself, and those you're serving no good when you are serving from a place of personal wounding, where your own cup is empty. In this episode we have Lesha Nelson joining us. She has spent over a decade studying trauma, meditation, stress responses in the body, psychosomatics, attachment, the womb, birth work, really so many different things. In this interview, today, she's going to share with us how our own drive is often built upon trauma, and how we can shift that naturally. We talk about co-regulation, and how our nervous systems work better as a community. We discuss psychosomatics and bringing wholeness into our bodies and that of our clients. Alright friends, we're flipping the script a bit this week, and Zach is jumping in the interviewer seat to do a deep dive on his co-host Dean Morris - aka Deaner.Dean wears many hats, father, Lululemon run ambassador, teacher, musician and pastor. And in this conversation Z&D follow a free flowing conversation that covers many aspects of Dean's life, and his work in the world beyond A Little More Good.If you are turned off by Christianity, or have had bad or painful experiences of Church this episode might be challenging for you, but we invite you to listen with open ears and minds, as Deaner is a bit of a rebellious, outside of the box pastor. Whatever bad things you might have to say about Church, Dean likely agrees with you, but still advocates for hope, love, and generous welcome of the divine to each and every one of us! We also talk about:How Jesus and the bible inspired Dean to embrace a plant-based lifestyle Simple truths that are hard to practice; like forgiveness, love and treating others the way you want to be treated. A fresh look at the teachings of Jesus and the bible, the danger of literal interpretations of the bible, reimagining what a faith community could look like & the responsibility the church carries in perpetuating the plague of loneliness Meditation and the power of turning off to tune inChrist consciousness, the magic of coincidences and how Covid may play a role in us all coming together stronger in communityWe had fun doing this one, we hope you enjoy! As always, we invite you to like this episode and subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss out on our future episodes! -Zach & Dean Looking for a little more? Welcome back creatives! As you may know, there have been some big changes happening in the community recently. Anthony D'Ambrosio is stepping down from leadership to be a member of the Catholic Creatives community and Matt Meeks from Catholic Ventures has come in to help shepherd this community into the next phase of our mission to bring beauty back to the Church. Transitions can be hard, bumpy and confusing but they always bring new life. For Catholic Creatives… We are already dreaming of a new and rebooted summit,We are dreaming of a new and improved podcast,We are dreaming of a new way for people to belong in the communityWe are dreaming of more crowdsourced projectsWe are dreaming of a way to get our creations out there to the rest of the world. And, we finally have long needed support to make a lot of these dreams a reality. We see God moving to make all these dreams happen and more through this new partnership. And we are excited to bring you a new episode of the Catholic Creatives podcast today. In this episode we hear from both Anthony D'Ambrosio and Matt Meeks of Catholic Ventures as they discuss their history together, challenges building the CC community, and the future with Matt in this new role. This was a great interview with a few tears shed, and we see God's heart leading these men and the Church as a whole.A program note, the audio is a little rough at times, as this was a zoom call recording. We'll make sure to get all the bugs ironed out for our next episode. What are you most excited about on this next phase of the journey?Let us know @catholiccreatives and for anyone who has specific questions, concerns or wants to connect on the next phase of the community, Matt asked us to include his email for you all to reach out to him directly: matt@catholic.venturesTo learn more about Catholic Ventures, checkout the media release here.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T AcronymR stands for RESETThis past year we’ve learned to reset and pivot our goals, needs, and priorities. We've learned to raise the necessity, and not just hope but do.Reset your mind and raise your expectations:Take what you learned in 2020 and what you didn’t like and reset them in 2021.We could be highly successful, but if we have no fulfillment we’re just going through the motions."A person can make himself happy, or miserable, regardless of what is actually happening 'outside,' just by changing the contents of consciousness.”- Mihaly CsikszentmihalyiLet’s not just focus on what we want to achieve, but who do we want to be? Think adjectives not just nouns. Think about an engaged parent, an active listener, a productive entrepreneur, a high performing human. When you think of Total Fit Boss Chick as a team or me as Brentney Parks, I want to be known as an engaging teacher that inspires greater fulfillment, productivity, and high performance passively. What are you excited about?Where do you want to go?Who do you want to help? What difference do you want to make? What do you want to change? Are you excited about your family, hobbies, business, or maybe new possibilities? What do you need to reset or change to get there? Is it limited thoughts? Is it your time allocation? Maybe your skills.I suggest taking out a pen and paper and writing down what you want to be known for, who do you want to represent in 2021 and beyond. Better yet put it in a journal and set your intentions, and reflect on it daily. So R is for Reset your mind Raise your need, desires, and expectations.E stands for EDUCATE.This past year we've learned the need to educate ourselves, whether it's strengthening our skills or educating ourselves on what's going on around us. We must always be learning and honing in on our desires to grow and teach others. For example,If you didn’t like the instability of your job, create a profitable side gig.If you have a side gig, but it hasn’t been profitable, change it in 2021. What are the top skills you need to grow, develop, or create to make that change? List 3-5 skills you need to input so you can alter the output. It doesn’t matter if it’s getting to your ideal weight, learning a new language, or starting a business. What do you need to learn to reach your goals? If you want to have a great email list, you would want to learn to write better copy. Maybe you want to be known for your awesome new podcast; then you want to learn how to speak to your audience in a way they want to listen, or maybe you want to learn to be a better communicator so you would study how to be an active listener or the importance of power words.Again, E is for EDUCATE. What education or skills do you need to become who you want to represent? S stands for SET BOUNDARIESSetting boundaries is a necessity when we are going after what we want. In case anyone needs the reminder, it’s ok not to say “yes” to everything. It’s ok to say, “no.” You have to say “no” so you can say “yes” to more things you want to say “yes” to. If you have a history of being a people pleaser, it'll be harder at first but practice saying “no.” How many times have you given up your time for someone or something else? How many times have you checked social media or even your email before setting your own plans into action for the day?How many times have you taken a phone call or any other interruption when you weren’t really available to talk? How many times have you tried to multitask because you were overwhelmed and you thought it’d help you catch up?Create a space of discipline and create boundaries to:Protect your goals and ambitionsPrepare for pushbackProtect your self-care timeControl your physical space and requirementsDevelop a system for successRemain present in your thoughts and your spaceDetermine what your non-negotiablesSo S is for SETTING BOUNDARIES a necessity when we are going after what we want.P stands for PRODUCTIVITYEarlier this year, we discussed the difference between being productive and busy. Also, we learned that busy doesn’t equate to productivity; results equate to productivity. What action steps do you need to create to make your goals a reality. Productivity isn’t just about getting work done. It’s about making consistent strides in the most critical areas of your life. This includes plowing down the need to be perfect and taking action. We are productive when we are focused and not frantic when we are relaxed and not rushed. Productivity is choosing important over urgent and trading perfection for purpose. If it’s important, it belongs on the calendar. Schedule your tasks and block them out on your calendar. Schedule time to increase your education, rest and reset your thoughts, schedule your work, and play. P is for PRODUCTIVITY to schedule what matters most and consistently make strides toward them.E stands for ENERGYWe have learned to maintain high energy by managing our productivity highs and lows in our day. We have to plan according to our energy levels and take breaks. Know your Circadian rhythm, are you:The morning bird peaks between 4-5 am and again at 8 am but drags a bit in the afternoon. The afternoon lark peaks between 8 am and 12 pm and are perfect for corporate jobs. The night owl peaks in the afternoon but will drag in the mornings.Despite our situation, our mindset/energy is what will drive our response/what comes next. It is essential to be well-rested so that our work is always the best it can be.Listen to your energy and allow yourself the ability to:Be grateful for everything. Think positiveMeditate or PrayBe present in your life.Be accountable and responsible.Your energy level affects your mindset. Your mindset affects your productivity. Lack of productivity dampens your fulfillment and your joy.E is for our ENERGY, which is the driving force to our joy.C stands for CONNECT and COMMUNITYWe have discussed having the courage to ask for help, connect with like minds and build a community, and challenge ourselves not to complain about the struggle but understanding it's all a part of the process to greatness. It’s not always “how to” complete a task it’s “who” can help us get it done. Who can we connect with to mutually grow, learn, and earn? How can we connect to our desires so they align with our priorities? We must continuously look for members to grow our community to motivate us and inspire us beyond our expectations. So, C is for having the courage to build a connection and growing a community. T stands for THOUGHTS and clarityThis year we have learned to seek clarity constantly. Who do we want to be? How do we want to be perceived? What do we want to be known for?How can we serve? Thoughts generate a vision that creates clarity that fuels our intentions! When we have clear intentions, we can achieve whatever we envision. The acronym R.E.S.P. E. C. T. that we just discussed is the driving force to my new webinar for entrepreneurs who are tired of the chaos in their business and are ready to operate in a state of FLOW so you can spend less time working on your business than you do enjoy your business. 111 South 11th StreetWest Des Moines, IA 50265Des Moines' Distillery — Located in Valley Junction near the Halldistillery@foundrydistillingcompany.com515.822.9296 FOUNDRY DISTILLING COMPANY WAS BUILT AROUND FOUR PILLARS:HISTORY, COMMUNITY, INNOVATION AND QUALITY.HISTORYFoundry Distilling Company was started by Scott Bush. Scott began working on Templeton Rye whiskey in his apartment in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2002, while a student at the Sloan School of Business at MIT. Scott’s great grandfather, Frank Schroeder, was born in Templeton and was an "entrepreneur during Prohibition" who made Templeton Rye at the family farm outside of Arcadia and later Odebolt, Iowa. Scott knew of his family’s involvement in the rye trade and wanted to build a business, so he founded Templeton Rye and built it into one of the most successful brands in the new craft spirits industry. Scott sold controlling interest in Templeton Rye in 2016 and started working on Foundry Distilling Company. He chose to focus on producing and distilling authentic, high-quality spirits right here in Iowa with local input, involvement and control.Foundry Distilling is part of an exciting project at The Foundry building, which was constructed in 1899 and was known as the Rock Island Railroad car barn because it was originally built to repair rails cars. Other tenants at The Foundry include The Hall, a European-style beer hall, and The Kitchen, a nonprofit commissary that will provide kitchen space for food truck owners.COMMUNITYWe are located is the Valley Junction area of West Des Moines, which was founded in 1846 by a man named James Jordan whose home became a stop on the "Underground Railroad." Above ground, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad had a significant presence here as well. Today, the Valley Junction community is a thriving group of artisan shops, restaurants and galleries located along historic 5th Street in West Des Moines. We feature many events throughout the year and a popular Thursday evening farmer's market in the Summer.INNOVATIONWe designed Foundry Distilling Company with the flexibility to create virtually any spirit, in large or small amounts. We have our core Foundry Collection, our Heritage Collection and many other unique specialty products. We also offer spirit enthusiasts the unique opportunity to produce completely customizable private barrels of whiskey. Finally, we are collaborating with many distillers and brewers around the state and country to produce unique collaborative offerings. If you have an idea or are interested in collaborating with us, please email distillery@foundrydistillingcompany.com.QUALITYThe Foundry Distilling team has been active in the spirits industry since the early days of the craft spirits movement. We have talked, worked, consulted, advised, brainstormed and/or collaborated with hundreds of people and have tried to listen and learn from these experiences. We feel that our team, equipment, processes, partners and consultants are some of the very best in the industry and that our products reflect that experience and collaboration. We also understand the importance of transparency with spirits production. We strive to be an industry leader in this important area, including videos showing details of production for all of our products.

Guest OverviewTina Kelley describes herself as a cheerful optimist with a morbid streak. She is the author of Abloom and Awry, Precise, and The Gospel of Galore, and co-authored Almost Home: Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope, and she reported for the New York Times for 10 years, sharing a staff Pulitzer Prize for 9/11 coverage.Tina Kelley grew up in New Jersey to caring loving adoptive parents, her early love poetry. Tina describes growing up in small-town America, the influence of her poetic father, developing her love of poetry, reading, and writing that set her on a path to Yale and beyond as a journalist, poet and author via a detour through the world of NGO's and Think Tanks.Tina quotes Thomas Jefferson “If I had to choose between a well-functioning government and a well-functioning press I‘d choose the latter, sunshine is the best disinfectant” to frame her perspective on the decimation of local news media and print journalism, the impact of losing a generation of people asking hard questions of public officials or as she says leaving the pigs at the trough with no one watching.Tina discusses quality investigative journalism in the world of fake news and voting for optimism and the importance of the hyper-local journalistic model. We discuss the resurgence and importance of local communities, her mixed views of Facebook, and the innovation of the Clear Health Costs startup and how it is disrupting the inequities of the pricing in the US health system. We also discuss her process for finding inspiration in everyday life, her journaling process and the purpose and role of poetry in today's society Tina discusses her vision for a world-changing educational model in the 21st Century and she answers all our quick-fire questions. I hope you enjoy the artistic advice, poetic perspectives and journalistic principles of Tina Kelley. What we discuss:Growing up in as a single adoptive child in a loving home in New Jersey Her auditor father and home-keeping mother Discovering being adopted age three Her self belief and feeling special age eightDiscovering poetry age eight Being an extrovertThe influence of the Church on language and musicMixed diversity at School The impact of her music teachers and playing Sax Her path to journalism Journalism and learning for a livingProblem-solving through journalism Her perspective on the decimation of journalism Her Optimism The future of local journalism and the power of communityWe discuss Covenant House and her work as a staff writer and the life transformation work for adoptive kids Her process for capturing ideas Future of Education PTech Pathways in Technology, Early College and High school Corp, Schools and Community colleges Links to SocialTina's blogLinkedin TwitterLinks in showYale Clear health costsIBM
On the show today, I'm talking to Jaclyn DeVore, founder of DeVore Editorial, about how she helps authors bring their words into the light and onto the page.In many ways, meeting Jaclyn felt like meeting my soul twin. We both emphasize the role of light in our work, and we both have built editorial businesses. On top of all that, she used the image of a midwife on her guest form to come on the show—and she didn't even know at the time that I had a company called Bookwifery! On this episode, we talk about:* How the image of light started showing up in her business and what it means to have a team that is light focused* The importance of alignment, intuition, and flow in how she runs her business* How Instagram has been a magic portal for her business, bringing her people for her team and clients who are just the right fit* The key experiences that helped her learn who her editorial agency is best suited to serve* How her work as a trauma therapist serves her work today* Her love for collaboration and communityWe also talk editorial shop quite a bit and even share some not-so-proud moments from each of our editorial histories.Connect with Jaclyn on her website and on Instagram at @jaclyn.devore.Connect with Christianne on Instagram at @christiannesquires or by subscribing to the Light Notes email list. And consider applying to be a guest on the show!
