J. Elvis Weinstein was a head writer on many shows so he knows a good joke while Jay just jokes often from character. On this show we sort out the differences. Also J. talks about his funny family. Hobbies like ice cream, bad jokes, bubble gum jokes, fortune cookies, losing money on documentaries, saving your marriage by wasting less money than your wife thinks, Mystery Science Theater, old credits, and how jokes ruin dramas, hack jokes, improvisations, the perfect punchline, and hating Seinfeld. Bio: J. Elvis Weinstein began his stand-up comedy career at age 15 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At 17, he was one of the founding writer/performers of "Mystery Science Theater 3000” (MST3K) as the original voice/puppeteer of robots Tom Servo and Gypsy, and the role of Dr. Lawrence Erhardt.Since moving to Los Angeles, he has worked as a writer/producer on a wide range of network TV comedy, including "Freaks and Geeks", "Malcolm and Eddie", "Dead Last", and "My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star.” He was also the Head Writer on "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Later with Greg Kinnear". In 2008 he reunited with his MST3K co-stars to form “Cinematic Titanic” which toured U.S. Theaters as a live show and produced 12 DVDs, now available as a box set.J. Elvis has written and directed 3 films - 2 feature documentaries (“I Need You To Kill” & “Michael Des Barres: Who Do You Want Me To Be?”) and a comedy short (“The Mediocre Samaritan”). As a performer, he continues to perform as a stand-up (releasing the album “Chunks” in 2019), co-hosts the podcast “Thought Spiral” with comedian Andy Kindler, and recently co-starred in the feature film “The Fiddling Horse” (2020).
Andy and Jay talk about anger, falling down, therapy, neuropathy, parents, the power of singing, audio books, back aches, Quakers, the State of The Industry, the Thought Spiral podcast, Binghamton University, LSD, The Stump, and Moon Zappa's new book “Earth To Moon”, and running away from Jay Leno.Bio: Andy Kindler currently recurs on Fox's hit animation, Bob's Burgers and Comedy Central's long-running Tosh.O. He is also a regular on the critically praised Canadian web series, But I'm Chris Jericho (for which he was nominated as Best Supporting Actor by L.A. Webfest 2018). Andy was the host of Season 4 and 5 of Hulu's standup series, Coming to the Stage as well as a series judge on the seventh season of NBC's Last Comic Standing, the star of two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials and was a frequent guest and correspondent on The Late Show with David Letterman with over 40 appearances. He has previously recurred on Everybody Loves Raymond, Showtime's I'm Dying Up Here, Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place, IFC's Maron and Comedy Central's The Daily Show. Other noteworthy credits include Portlandia, the HBO Young Comedians Special, Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, Home Movies and The Larry Sanders Show. In July 2022, Andy became the first comedian to perform as a hologram, delivering his notorious State of the Industry Address from the relative safety of Van Nuys, CA. while appearing 3-dimensionally live at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal.
Ever stared at your screen, heart sinking, because your latest social media post flopped? Or maybe business has been slow, and that little voice inside is starting to whisper, 'You're just not cut out for this.' I've been there many times as an entrepreneur and I've learned how to bring myself, and my clients out of these negative thought loops. As entrepreneurs, we pour our hearts into our businesses. When things don't go as planned—clients backing out, low engagement, tough feedback—it's easy to slip into a loop of negative thoughts. Often, we focus on one piece of negative feedback, ignoring the twenty positive ones. Once we fall into that loop, it becomes incredibly challenging to climb out. But it's important to remember that negative thoughts aren't inherently bad. They serve a purpose by alerting us to areas that need attention and inspiring us to improve. When you catch yourself spiralling, consider which of these strategies might work for you. Whether it's pausing to name your thoughts, reframing negative narratives, taking action, leaning on your community, or celebrating your wins, remember that change begins with commitment. And if you've already found effective ways to shift your mindset, I'd love to hear about them. Share your thoughts, and let's keep the conversation going.LINKS:WebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://www.emmamcqueen.com.au/book/

A few years back, I was just like many of you, struggling with my emotional side. It felt like everything triggered me, and I couldn't even distinguish my own emotions from others'. I often found myself overwhelmed. Then, something incredible happened. I met a coach who had learned from the great Tony Robbins and claimed he could control his emotions. At first, I was skeptical, but in our coaching sessions, I discovered it was indeed possible. One of the first techniques he shared with me was simple yet powerful: change your physical position when you feel down. If you're sitting, stand up and move around. It turns out, changing your body's position can shift your emotional state. Another game-changer was creating a list of 50 things I love to do, no matter how small. Initially, I laughed at the idea, but I did it, and it worked. Whenever I felt down, I'd pick something from that list and, like magic, my emotions would shift. Lastly, I learned a valuable lesson from Wayne Dyer. He taught me to observe myself from the outside, like a witness. It's a bit like stepping out of your own body and looking at yourself. I've used this technique to detach from negative thought spirals and worries, and it has made a world of difference. For example, during a bus and train ride to the mountains, I started blaming myself for not getting enough sleep and breaking my morning routine. But I detached from that negative self-talk, observed myself from a distance, and transformed my mood from tired and frustrated to grateful and excited. I want you to remember this - you can use this visual technique whenever changing your body position isn't an option, and it's particularly helpful for empaths like me. BOOKS:

This week the painter and curator Kristin Calabrese. Kristin was born in 1968 in Mountain View, a suburb of San Jose, CA and spent her childhood moving back and forth between Massachusetts and Arizona. Her father, Bill, was an engineer and her mother, Karen, a housewife. Kristin has a younger brother Greg and they grew up in the 70s in a middle-class white American suburb with an abundance of children in the neighborhood. However, Kristin's childhood was not easy; her father was an authoritarian and she was bullied by children in school. She says her family environment was very sexist and she vowed to live a very different life to her mother's. In 1995, Kristin graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute and Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1998. She found her way as an artist after exploring a variety of mediums in college, venturing into graphic design and creating websites before eventually concentrating on oils. She says: “My paintings speak plainly, make jokes, and are irreverent. I paint to make my thoughts, feelings, and experience into monuments that mark my small and large, personal existence.” The focus of Kristin's work includes psychology, humor, politics and formal issues of composition and representation, primarily through painting. Since the mid 90's, Kristin has held numerous shows in the US and Europe. Solo exhibitions include Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles, Brennan & Griffin in New York, and Michael Jansen in Cologne. She has also curated many group exhibitions, including at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions and Honor Fraser Gallery. Her work is featured in numerous collections, including Saatchi and The Armand Hammer Museum. Together with her husband, artist Joshua Aster, they have a small business for art supplies, such as canvases and framing, and then they spend the evenings painting. It's a JAM PACKED Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and host of the Politics of Everything podcast, to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by actor and SAG-AFTRA member Andrew Leeds to discuss the most recent vote by the union to authorize a strike. And THEN, they're joined by comedian Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Republicans' absurd budget proposal, the Democrats successfully killing it, and SAG-AFTRA going on strike, as well as the disgusting corporate proposals that got the film and TV industry to this point. Alex Pareene then joins as he dives into the continuing story of inflation, and what could have been if the establishment wasn't so keen on ignoring its roots in price gouging. Next, he, Emma, and Sam look to the Republicans' grotesque $900bln defense bill as perfectly exemplary of the GOP's complete capitulation to anti-woke politics despite its stunning lack of popularity – something that's also seen in the falling popularity of the once-prophesied DeSantis campaign, before wrapping up the interview with an assessment of New York state politics post-Cuomo and what a strong NY Democratic party could mean on the national level. Andrew Leeds then walks through the central issues facing SAG-AFTRA, discussing the massive role residuals play in actors' income, and in qualifying for healthcare and other union benefits, only for the streaming revolution to nearly take these payments off the shelves entirely. After expanding on the attempted gigification of the acting industry, Andrew wraps up by discussing the incredible spirit of solidarity in the union (and their sister orgs), and what those on the outside can do to help. Andy Kindler concludes the first half as he assesses the incredible grifting done by Jimmy Door, and tackles why the hell some famous people get so obsessed with being wrong they dive headfirst into bigotry. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Fran Drescher's killer remarks to help launch SAG-AFTRA's strike, and watch Peter Hotez aptly summarize the legitimacy of the “lab leak” theory. Ben Shapiro continues his attacks on women's rights, plus, your IMs! First, they run through updates on a Jan 6 insurrectionist launching a defamation case against Fox for painting him as a Federal infiltrator, the US' airstrikes in Syria, the Donald Trump Grand Jury going on break, Montana youth suing their state for fossil fuel abuses, the end of the LA school strike, and 2022's sharp uptick in book bans, before diving into Donald Trump's recent Truth social breakdown. John from Indiana and Bee from Queens call in to discuss members of the left media laundering transphobic talking points (however innocently they may be doing so), Jay from Atlanta talks about TikTok's trial, and Matt from Grand Rapids reflects on a Tucker Carlson segment from last night. Andy Kindler then joins as he and Sam reflect on the iconifying of various conservative figures during the US' propaganda push at the start of the Iraq war, including the production of multiple action figures, before parsing through Matt Walsh's defense of being a horrible husband (“its a JOKE” ). Louisa from Massachusetts dives into the legislative repression of medical procedures, before Sam walks through his recent appearance on the Patrick Bet-David (BPD) Podcast, from the social security debate to jailing rich people. It's the first Casual Friday of 2023! Sam hosts Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam is joined by Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! First, Sam runs through updates on the US' 50-year unemployment low, South Carolina's Supreme Court rejecting a 6-week abortion ban, and Kevin McCarthy racking up an even 12 losses for the Speakership since Tuesday, now looking to make it a baker's dozen. He also touches on the accessibility of the new abortion pill in red states, Biden's new authoritarian immigration policies, and dives into the importance of disallowing non-compete agreements in the fight for labor control. Digby then joins as they dive a little deeper into Kevin McCarthy's performance on the House floor this week, from pretending not to care about his repeated losses to not even being able to sell out correctly, and discuss parallels to his rise as John Boehner's heir apparent. Next, she and Sam get into the role that conservative media has been playing in the issue, and whether the Freedom Caucusers will get what they want (whatever that is) from this standoff. Andy Kindler joins next, as he and Sam talk liquor, Ryan Seacrest, and what it's like to be young guns in the comedy world, before parsing through Dave Rubin's reflections on DeSantis' nomination, the revealed abuse by Matt Schlapp, Chair of CPAC. And in the Fun Half: Sam covers the drama of talking about Marjorie Taylor Green acknowledging Jesse Jackson, and Glenn Greenwald cites trusted news source, Joe Rogan. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Then they are joined by Lucas Kunce, candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, to give us an update from the campaign trail. Afterwards, they're joined by comedian Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! First, Sam and Emma dive into legislative updates from the Senate, from the Manchin-Schumer IRA deal and its backlash, to the GOP putting a stop to healthcare for veteran victims of agent orange, with the latter largely coming from the GOP's desire to punish democrats for the former (with Same-Sex Marriage reform also a potential right-wing punching bag). Alex Pareene then dives into why he won't hold his breath until the IRA bill is signed, as he explores the behind-the-scenes surprise at Manchin's maneuver, the op-ed pieces from the establishment placing the blame on him that pushed him over the edge, and the insanity of that being the final factor. Next, he, Sam, and Emma dive into the climate provisions as a reasonable first step in the right direction, the CHIPS bill as an important turn against globalization and towards a locally resilient supply chain, and the threat of Schedule F as we move into the midterms. They wrap up the interview by tackling the evergreen question of the neoliberal philosopher, “recession or nah?” Sam and Emma are then joined by Lucas Kunce as he walks through his experience running for Senate in Missouri just four days ahead of his primary, what sets him apart from the billionaire heiress running against him, and dives deep into the role of LGBTQ rights, reproductive care, and single-payer healthcare in his platform, before wrapping up with a conversation on his position as a veteran, and what lense that gave him into the oligarchy of defense contractors in the US. And in the Fun Half: Andy Kindler joins as he, Sam, and Emma parse through Jim Breuer's hour-long audition tape of him defecating with funny noises and calling it political comedy, before Sam and Emma dive into Jimmy Dore moving from generic reactionary anti-vax rhetoric to full on Scientological dianetics (fully researched, as seen in how well he reads the title of the study). Doocy and Kilmeade get real Fox and Frenemies on the question of trusting a poll that shows both Biden and Trump's numbers tanking, Justice Alito goes to Rome to complain about foreigners, and John Feal eviscerates the GOP's blockage of a bill for Veteran healthcare, plus, your IMs! Ep. 5- Andy Kindler "And There's One Guy Still Upset With You in Stuttgart" Late again! But this is how it goes. I had an iLok/ProTools freak-out that wasn't my fault, and I lost the file with Aimee's intro and outro, and had to have her dig through her computer, find some wifi on the road, and re-send it to me (then me re-edit it), all of which WAS my fault. This week we start out somehow getting into a discussion of parody songs for pets (specifically cats, dogs, fish, and iguanas); AND THEN we get to the main event: comedian Andy Kindler! We recorded this right after we'd completed two nights of holiday shows at Largo in LA, for which Andy portrayed our Jacob Marley/Ghost of Hanukkah Present, and did the narration on our version of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," which is what he's referring to when, about halfway through the interview, he sings out, "WITH ARSENIC SAAAAUUUUUCE!" This interview winds up being partially about Andy's coming to terms with his OCD and Anxiety disorders, how they affected his initial attempts at carving a life out in music before he landed in comedy, and how therapy has helped him greatly in recent years. No one involved with this is a doctor or psychologist, and the best that I can offer in terms of resources for OCD and Anxiety, is just a starting place: The Anxiety and Depression Association of America . I can, however, put a good word in for therapy. If you're experiencing anything we discuss in this episode, and you can find a therapist you like and can afford, give it a try. Purely as a personal testimonial, it's been invaluable for me. And speaking of what we discuss during this podcast, if you're not a complete stranger to Aimee and me, then you can probably guess that we get into a little bit of our own stuff and how it relates to Andy's as well, but what comes up again and again, at least as an adjacent "issue," and yet we somehow never managed to name directly, is IMPOSTOR SYNDROME. I'm no stranger to that, myself. I don't have any web resources for it, but in my experience, and as Andy says regarding his anxiety, it's helpful to be able to notice and name these feelings when they begin to crop up. There ARE strategies for diverting the freight train barreling down on you to a safer track, so you can get down to doing the work you need to do, and I think we'll plan to dig into that more in future episodes. For now, here is the book that Andy recommends, Ellen Forney, "Marbles" . Here's Andy's podcast with J Elvis Weinsetin, Thought Spiral (that's a Google link that comes up with a bunch of options for "wherever you get your podcasts"). Here's one of those episodes of Dr. Katz that Andy was on. Apparently the jury is still out as to whether the voice box rattles your teeth out of your jaw or not. Oh! And I NEGLECTED to follow up on if it was a horse that hurt Andy's tooth, but if it was, it was probably the titular one from the film he's working on, titled The Fiddling Horse . That one guy ins Stuttgart? Let it go.
Peter Fonda is happy to be figuring things out, no matter how long it took. Childhood traumas and an emotionally distant father affected his life and career, and he finally has some missing pieces of the puzzle. Peter also talks with Marc about Easy Rider, the time he talked George Harrison down from a bad trip, and working with Christopher Plummer on the new movie Boundaries. Plus, Andy Kindler and J. Elvis Weinstein stop by to try and explain what their podcast Thought Spiral is all about. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
