Unfiltered, all over the place, but from the heart- today's episode is my first solo episode, recorded from the rooftop in Bucerias, Nayarit after two margaritas gave me the courage to press record. The question I address is: what do you do when you feel like you don't fit in? I explore this topic, bounce all over the place and ultimately land on a few conclusions that I hope will encourage you to speak your mind thoughtfully and stop self-censoring. Now is the time for open discussion and honest opinions to be shared. Here's a look into my story, how I started to think with an open mind and question widely accepted narratives. Enjoy :)

Full Transcript: Passionistas: Hi, and welcome to the Passionistas Project podcast, where we talk with women who are following their passions to inspire you to do the same. We're Amy and Nancy Harrington and today we're talking with Lorelle Miller, an award-winning artist who expresses a lifetime of develop technique and personal investigation in her works that comprise oils, pastel, marble sculpture, and other mediums. Evidenced in her artwork is a unique sensitivity for mood and emotion, which offer a glance into the deeper wells of her experience. Lorelle shares her vision of natural beauty and the intensity of the human experience through her paintings, sculpture, and street art. She utilizes a broad yet finally tuned spectrum of media, each of which contributes to her expression and visual art. So please welcome to the show, Lorelle Miller. Passionistas: What are you most passionate about? Lorelle Miller: My strongest passion, and it may just be one thing, but it's basically, I love nature and my art. So those are probably the two things that I love and I'm most passionate about and feel happiest being involved with. Passionistas: But it seems like you've managed to tie those two things together. Lorelle: Yeah. I've always been somebody who loves to work outside. So a lot of my things that I do artistically, I'm happiest when I'm outdoors in nature or outside, I suppose. Passionistas: Did you grow up in nature? What was your childhood like? Lorelle: My main growing up years were just in the San Fernando valley, but I think I always took sort of, you know, I had sort of a, a calling towards being out in nature. I used to backpack. Yeah. So camping and, and all of that sort of thing. And I'm an artist, you know, I've always loved to draw and paint. So I don't know. Nature's always been a kind of a soothing place for me, even as a little girl, you know, I'd find a hiding place up in a tree or something. Passionistas: Were you always an artist? Lorelle: It seems like I started, yeah, super young because of that back in the day of, you know, growing up, if there weren't all the electronics and stuff, when I was young. So, I guess I'm sort of mechanical. And also I like to draw. It started probably when I was like eight or nine years old. Passionistas: Did you study art formally? Lorelle: I went to Cal State Northridge and I have a bachelor's degree from there. And then, um, I started a master's degree there also, but that didn't finish because I ended up having children. Like that kinda got carried away and I've studied with many master artists after that, just on continuing education going on in various areas. And I've learned a lot just on the street, literally. Passionistas: What do you mean by that? Lorelle: Well, I'm a street painting artist, which is a nice segue, I suppose, I guess as a little kid, you know, one of the first mediums that I worked with was pastel. I mean, cause they're so forgiving actually. And I had a lot of private art lessons, luckily, cause my mom saw a lot of potential in what I did and I got a lot of accolades growing up in school. Like even in with meeting my friend, Gayle who nominated me for this, I used to be pulled out of my normal class to go into a special artist class — like for gifted kids. I did a lot of pastels at that time. And so, years later, you know, when the street painting idea came up, you know, there was something that came about in my community for that. It sort of seemed like a natural thing to try, kind of took off from there. Passionistas: Tell everybody what street art is in case they don't know and how did you get started in that? I've always done painting and drawing and sculpture and I wasn't in 3d sculpture before it was 3D, like on a computer. Yeah. You know, that sort of thing, but I always did pastels. And so I think I was judging an art contest for my local artists association. And I was, I still remember this sort of weird, we were all judging these like high school students paintings or whatever. And I remember they mentioned this thing that they were having this event in the community called the Bellavia, which. Uh, street art. It was going to be a street painting or a street art festival. And I mean, street painting is something that's been going on since like the 1500s in Europe and so forth. And I actually had seen a street painter. I went to Europe like three times before I was 20 years old by some miraculous manner. I don't know a lot of different circumstances that I actually saw street painter. But at this time when they were talking about this event, I thought, you know, I really ought to try it. It just was like, it's like, I heard it. And it was just like, crystallized, like, you know, you really ought to try it. You just need to go see what this is about. Like, it rang in my head. It just like, you know, some things you just don't pay attention to, but it was like, yeah, I gotta see what this is. So they did this terrific event here in, I live in Santa Clarita and they had this event called the Bella. And they invited these more experienced GE painters. And then, you know, other people were able to apply and so forth. So I applied and I, they, I got in to the street painting festival and I just started out with like a, I think a three by four foot square. And I was really nervous cause I had not really done that before. Basically what street art is. You asked me to tell you what that is, is that you. Um, usually asphalt or like the street and you create artwork on the street that is, you know, either classical renditions or something that your system, original composition or whatever it is that you're doing. And people basically walk, can walk by and watch you create the art. Because a lot of times when artists are working, they're in their studio. So this is a public art form. And then. They can watch you. And then, you know, when they, you take a break, you're down on the ground, they're above you looking down at it. And so when you stand up or take a break or something, you know, people can ask you questions and interact with you. It's had a far reaching effect on my life. I got to tell you, so that's what it is, but that's where it started because I did this piece by Renoir called the dance of bocce ball. I think. I'd done it in oils. And I thought, well, I know this painting well, so I did this painting and then a scout, there was a talent scout going around and picked me up for another festival, which was down like towards Irvine. And then it snowballed because I've traveled all around, doing this, barely traveled to festivals around the world.  So what are some of the places that you've done work? Lorelle: I've gone to Mexico to a place that's on the other side of the bay from Puerto Vallarta, it's a festival called Bucerias. And that was really neat because just the experience of being in a small town in Mexico and cross cultural types of things. And we worked with children like children from the orphanage there. Teaching them about street painting. And then I went to Norway. Also. I have family in Norway and my sister-in-law. She had a friend who had an octillion in a little town called Harmar. And so she asked if I would come and produce a street painting for her  and expose the kids to street art in Norway. And I actually had one circumstance. I went to a middle school in Norway and I did a demonstration there and there was kids from Somalia, Russia, all these exotic places. And then the teacher was, I think the teacher was from Scotland and I was from America and we were doing the street painting thing in Norway. It's like that happened. It was just amazing. Passionistas: How do you decide what work you're going to do? Where do you draw your inspiration? Or did they have themes for the different events? Lorelle: They sometimes have themes and sometimes it's just something that hits me. I can't even explain it. It's just like, you know, artists, how do, how do you pin down their muse? You know, it's just an inspiration that strikes you. Like I did this big project, like in 2019 called the garden of Eden. It's probably the biggest thing I've ever done, but I, that inspiration was because I like to play an air paint and I go around to different gardens, my husband and I love to go walking and gardens and stuff. And so I created this, the street painting. That was huge, enormous thing that was done by a collaboration of, I don't know how many artists all worked on it. Maybe about 15 artists. We all worked on it and created this botanical garden. As a street painting installation, but that was what the inspiration came from, was me traveling around and just doing my watercolor painting. And then I thought, wow, that would be like a cool street painting idea. That's one example. Passionistas: So it seems like street painting has evolved recently. You see the things on the internet of someone sees a building with a crack, and then they turn that into, you know, this dark hole that you look like you can walk through. Do you do that kind of street painting too? Or do you mainly concentrate on your own style masters and the masters and things like that? Lorelle: I kind of do all of it really. I mean, I worked for, I think I kind of still do, but there's a company called We Talk Chalk. They did a many commercial, like big commercial projects. And I would come in and these were not just made out of chalk, but were done on canvas and painted with acrylic paint because they have to be sent out to like cores or all the different commercial, you know, Kia, all these big commercial companies wanted to use that art form to promote businesses. So I got involved in helping produce those types of things for them, which was really wonderful. And I've done many 3d things on my own as well. I don't think it's my strongest suit. I like doing it and it's fun for me, but I think I love a lot of the classical kinds of little. So sometimes it's impressionist. So, you know, I'm not one of these. It's really hard for me as an artist. Cause I kind of migrate. That's probably one of the, I don't know if it's a good thing or not, but I migrate to different, but I do. I love class, very class, whole looking things too. And I do the 3d. I was like a moving target. It sounds like you continued to study. I just wrote something to one of my artists, friends. I said, you know, artists, I don't know my exact quote, but it was kind of like, you're always walking around the next bend to try to sort of see what's there. It's not, it's not like you're never done. You're just always kind of seeking and curiosity pulls you around that corner to see what's next. Passionistas: You know, you said that doing street art has had a far reaching effect on you. How has it changed your life? Lorelle: I suppose it's just the connection to so many various artists that I know all over the world. I have actually met them. They're not just virtual friendships that have gone to a street painting festival in Florida for about 10 years or more than that now, and this festivals international festivals. So they bring people in from everywhere. Ukraine, Australia. Mexico everywhere. And these are all people you create. You've got a community suddenly, you know, you've got a community of people who you've known each other. You kind of come back to the same place every year. And so we really connected in Italy. I've a lot of friends in Italy and that is huge because we all, we help each other when we need, and we support each other. If there's questions. It's just a terrific and amazing thing. And it's sometimes it's been in very funky situations where, you know, I mean, cause you practically are living together sometimes, you know, and like these artists just imagine what you would think and still almost like a community or commune of artists that are, you know, eating together and talking and doing, you know, just whatever it is and talking about your ideas are creative. So I have that, you know, that community that's grown over the years and that's just one festival, but it's many. So it's almost like a circus that's kind of travels around together. Yeah. Sort of thing. And then, um, the effect that it has, I think just the travel and the community. And then, and then also the effect that see that it has on people as they're looking at what you're doing, the public effect is, is a really big deal. Passionistas: What kind of reaction do you tend to get? Lorelle: It's all different. You know, I was in North Dakota two years ago and I got invited to come back there again pretty soon. So that's going to be interesting. I dunno. I just, I, you know, I, for that festival, I kind of was thinking about that. It's a little town called a Putin and, uh, Industry there, how to do with the trains. Like it was a big train community and my husband more, and his mom was Frank from St. Paul and her father worked the train. And I connected with that thought how cool it would be to think about the trains and going there and doing some that speaks to their community. And they have the bison there. They have big Buffalo bison and combining those images. And I did this piece that meant a lot to me. I just felt like it showed the power of the animal and the power of that iron, you know, train. And, you know, even though it didn't really talk to every single person that came by, but there was somebody that came by. Whose whole family was, had been historically in this train, kind of, that was everything that their family was, you know, from his historically. And they really got it. You just, without even saying anything, they were just like, you could tell that they connected with it with the imagery and stuff. So it ranges from the very emotional response to something as silly as like I made an anamorphic snow cone for one project. That was out in Cerritos, California, and you know, it was the anamorphic. So it was this huge thing that was like 20 feet long, but you could stand there and hold it. And it looked like you were eating a snow cone and people are goofing around with it and kids were having fun. And so, you know, there's such a broad range, but it can be a very emotional one too, just silly. Passionistas: We're Amy and Nancy Harrington. For details, go to ThePassionistasProject.com/2021Summit. Now here's more of her interview with Lorelle. Before we started recording, you were telling us about a collaborative piece in Pasadena. Tell us what that is and how that works. How do you actually do a piece with other people? Lorelle: I wasn't really instrumental in bringing that about at all, but basically what happens like what's going to happen with that one is that there's a, a big image that I told you. It was a Norman Rockwell that was suggested and everybody thought it was cool. It was a good image, but they basically break it down into sections, like, like long triangular sections. And then everybody works on their section and it kind of comes together. Now I've worked on many collaborations. I've worked with another big influencer for me was a very, very famous, um, street painter named Kurt winter. I've been actually involved in like two or three of his projects. Two of them were in the Guinness book of world records, but the one in Pasadena, we're all doing individual sections. When I worked on a big piece that I did for Kurt winter, if you look up the garden of wonders on YouTube, you'll see this giant anamorphic shark. I think it was like 27,000 square feet. It was in the Guinness. And then my little garden of wonders that I created was off on the side of that. You can see it just kind of kept adding to it because that was on a runway in Florida. Then as Florida, we took over an airport runway and created these huge installations. So it's really interesting, but so sometimes it's done in sections like collaboration. Sometimes people will do sections and then sometimes they work in layers like Curt Winter would have. Do a layer and then other artists were work on top of that layer. So that it's almost as though all the different styles kind of merged together, which is really crazy. That was really interesting to be a part of that, to see how that was all done, you know? Cause you think, cause everybody has a different handwriting, every makes a different mark, but somehow when it's all pulls together, it can Nash and that's not unusual. I mean, even in the classical. You know, they would have somebody who would do a lot of the, let's say the, you know, organic botanical types of ideas, you know, for painting. Then another person who was a figurative painter would come in and work in, do the figurative and they'd work it together. Is there a lot of pre-planning in that type of project or is it just like, here's your corner go for it? It ranges like when I did the garden of wonder, cause that, like I said, that was a huge endeavor and it took a year to prepare. And I had a lamp, uh, my friends, uh, the Renshaw has this couple that I know they're architects and the landscape architect when I wanted to do that garden. So I had the help of, I had the concept and I made a maquette, a model for it, of what I wanted, and they worked out the geometry with me. And my idea was just to, to create this format and then, um, The artists themselves, the people that I asked to join the team, I wanted a nice cooperative team. Cause that's, you gotta kind of watch that, you know? Cause you gave people that are too like, you know, that will resist. So I found this wonderful dream team of people that were extremely talented and I wanted them pretty much to do their, their thing. I wasn't going to like art director. But I wanted to give him the format and then have it all kind of work together. That's kind of how we did that. One. We, we, it was a combination of do your own thing, and this is kind of the, your parameters that you have to work with. And then once you get onsite, it always changes a little bit too. Like you have the idea. And then when it comes to the, the actuality of it, You know, we wanted to kind of like, maybe have some of the leads carry into another part of the, the other side. Like you have Asia and then you have Africa. I forget all the different ways I did it. You know, I had each continent was divided up. Passionistas: So what happened? That was different on the day? Lorelle: Well, then for instance, like the, like we wanted a little segue, like if, you know, I had it kind of like structured in walls, like, uh, I think it was, this was an octagon, it was seven, seven sites. Septic on. So it was very linear, like an end. And then some of the artists said, well, wouldn't it be kind of neat. Like I have a cherry blossom tree if it kind of like moved over into the next side just a little bit. So it kind of flowed. So that is something we discussed on that. Passionistas: How has COVID impacted your work? Lorelle: All the street painting basically pretty much stopped just now the drums starting to, you can hear the drums starting to be now the festivals. You know, I was up in Canada. That's another place I've been to. So they're starting to come about, some of them are still virtual festivals. Some of them are starting to like, okay, we're going to do it here. Anyway, like in North Dakota, um, Pasadena is doing it. Um, but as far as my own personal work, I have not really skipped a beat. I mean, My art in its own, you know, just my, my painting and all of that. I've been doing it consistently throughout this thing, I think probably saved my mental health, quite frankly, but I did participate in several virtual festivals and so forth, but it did have an impact for sure. And I, you know, I was teaching, I've been a teacher for 25 years off. And that had to come to a halt and I'm, he's still evaluating how I want to carry that forward. But you know, this, this time during the pandemic, I, I just thought to myself, you know, at my age, and everything's like, you need to be doing your best work. Like this is when you need to bring it. I mean, I can still goof around and do whatever, but, you know, it's like, I'm really trying to like focus on, you know, how many years of your life do you have to really put out your best that you can. No, we don't live forever. That's true. So tell us more about that. Passionistas: Tell us more about your non street art. Lorelle: I love to draw and drawing and painting work hand in hand, and sometimes, you know, I'll concentrate. I think what I do, because I, like I told you, I kind of migrate to various. Aspects of my work and with painting and drawing, like you can concentrate on where it's just painting and it's just, I mean, it's just drawing and it's just like black and white or graphite or charcoal or something. And I'll focus in on that, but then I'll get hungry for color. And I may move into working more with my oil paints where they're thick. And I have to, you know, manipulate the plasticity of the paint where, you know, you have to drag the edges and soften the edges and so forth, or sometimes I'll get hungry again and I'll need to move over to my watercolors because of the fluid nature of it. And the fact that there's not as much control sometimes, or you have, it's just, each thing seems to have a different draw for me. So I, you know, I've been moving through those throughout the pandemic and I was taking. Some online classes and listening to lifestyle. Totally. I didn't listen to podcasts that maybe I, I do actually, when I think about it, cause I was listening to several artists like, you know, very helpful, you know, on Fridays, Craig Nelson is a terrific artist and he had this online thing going on where you could ask him questions and watch what he was doing. And I actually started doing that myself. Not that I really can talk and paint that well, I would put up my camera and show my process of whatever like that. Ruth Bader Ginsburg behind me. I did that live and I did, I did that a lot throughout all the pandemic, but I basically, I guess I do, I do my oil painting and I like to draw and I love water color and I still need to get back to my sculpture. That's I have that too. It's dormant right now. You mentioned that you also teach art. So it seems like you've done that a lot. I worked for Segerstroms Art Center and I did, I did a lot of I've done teaching really since, I guess since, uh, probably about 25 years. I think I, I worked for our community college as an adult. Instructor for all kinds of things, different community classes and, um, art camps for kids. And I worked at the school in the school district. And, um, then later on I, I did stuff for seeker sons, which was great, that that had a lot to do with science and art. We were trying to create programs where we were using different artistic. Vehicles to help explain scientific concepts. And that was a collaboration between seeker Sims and university of Irvine. And we were visiting artists. And then I do a lot of workshops. I'm a visiting artist to a lot of schools. Like I worked at a school for Al the, um, you do an artist residency, like at a French school. I did that out in Orange County, which is really cool. Cause I got to use the tiny little bit of French that I know I learned a little bit, but it was teaching students street painting. I did this huge, this huge street painting with all kids from kindergarten all the way till I guess they were maybe fourth or fifth graders. So I've done teaching like that. And I, and I've done my own private classes too. I taught for the community college. Yeah. Out here. For like 15 years, I taught seniors. Like I went around to various senior living homes and I would teach in those areas, you know, different people at those places. And then I had private let, you know, did private classes at my house for many years too. So I've had a broad range with teaching and then I teach also on the road, like when I would go to. A festival, they would have me teach, like in Chicago, I would show street painting techniques or in Nashville, I've gone to so many places. That's another part of the extraordinary experience that I've had with just traveling and teaching too. Passionistas: What do you like about teaching? Lorelle: I like the sharing part of it, and I like it when the people are serious and get something out of it, you know, when they are, they. I think one of the biggest thing is, is when they see the growth or I can see the growth in them. I know it's an entertaining thing to do, but I like it when it's like, somebody is really getting it and wanting it more than play. I like the play part too, you know? And I got to tell you one other thing I did, I taught a high school junior high Institute that was really. Gosh, that was a great fun, the energy. It's such an interesting thing, too. When you, when you teach such a variety of ages, like from kindergarten to 90 year olds, and then you teach the junior high kids and their energy is just like off the wall. I taught a sculpture. I taught sculpture in this class of junior high kids that were, you know, I ha I had all this assemblage stuff to do, like assemblage scope thing. And I, you know, they would make like, whatever. Some kind of creature or something like that. I would say now, imagine if you can make it like, as giant as a planet or as small as a cell, you know, I had them use their brain to think of how those ideas could be expanded or God, it was, that was a lot of fun, but it wasn't no, you know, I thought they would come in there and make like maybe one thing and they ended up making like three things, you know, all in the same amount of time. Cause their energy sucks. It's really fun. I love like when I was, uh, I went to a Sonoma school, but it was a kind of, a little bit of an inner city school type thing. And I had a lot of fun with the kids. I enjoyed that a lot, you know, doing the street painting and having them kind of develop their ideas. I was there for six weeks, right before the pandemic. Passionistas: What's the most challenging part of being a street artist? Lorelle: There's always physical challenges because the streets. Is extremely physical. I mean, you can be working for like 12, 14 hours a day on the ground. So you have to really, I mean, that's suppose that's a big challenge to sophisticated city of it. And luckily I've been doing it for so many years. I still am pretty good, but that's one challenge. I think most of the challenge just comes from yourself. Like just wanting to do your best work and not emotionally getting hung up on competitive stuff with other artists and stuff like that. That's that for me, honestly. And it's kind of, cause you know, as an artist, sometimes you get rejected too. So that's, I mean, that's a hard thing for me. I wish I could. I'm trying to work on that. That shouldn't be a thing. I, you know, you really just want to kind of do your own thing and not worry about the others stuff. Like, you know, you win some, you lose some. Passionistas: What advice would you give to a young woman who wants to follow her passion for art? Lorelle: Probably to be fearless and curious and just do it. We know the stories about the men from India who taught yoga. What is still missing, as is often the case with history, are the stories of the women. These women were yogis, strong women, circus performers, teachers and authors, yet they have been forgotten. If history had been written differently, they would be the ones we know and celebrate. Ida Jo is a yoga acharya. She is the co-author of the Ghosh Yoga Practice Manuals and has edited and published several historic yoga manuals from Kolkata, India. I got some pretty good shots from there so check them out, and yes, it was a great spot to watch the action both Saturday for the trial runs, and Sunday for the real thing. So I hit the Airbnb site pretty hard and I found yet another place with no reviews, but it was described as being on Playa Camarones, which the picture clearly showed, and it [caption id="attachment_3122" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Airbnb on The Beach[/caption] looked like a pretty nice place from the pictures of course, and the guy was giving the first 5 to reserve a 20% discount, so I reserved the place for $191 for the 3 days so like, $63 a night. I know, splurging Barry? Well, yes. It’s going to be out 30th wedding anniversary, so yeah. Anyway, if you haven’t used Airbnb, they don’t tell you the exact address of the place or even the street name until after you commit to it. You are shown the approximate location of the place, usually, I mean, some of these listings, the owner tells you where it is. But anyway, I pay for the place and guess where it is, above the Barracuda! So, I’m like, rushing to see what the hours of the place are, and they don’t open till 12 noon and they close early on Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday till midnight so it shouldn’t be too bad. I’ll have some more time to wander through that neighborhood in the Cinco de Diciembre Neighborhood. Of course I’ll take pictures and stuff and junk, and get back to you on the Condo with a review. Puerto Vallarta’s 100 Year Anniversary They are gearing up for the 100th anniversary of the Municipality, The City of Puerto Vallarta, coming up May 31st. The town is all abuzz with excitement as the date approaches. Things are very busy right now with restaurant week and the people already in town for the event. I’ll bring you more in the next show. This week I have a very special guest, he is Dan Dimov, and Dan is a wedding photographer and he flies around Puerto Vallarta using a Paramotor, but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 28th of December 2017. Today, December 28 is actually Mexico’s equivalent of April Fools Day. It’s called Dia Los Santos Inocentes, and on this day, do not, I repeat, do not lend anything to anyone in Mexico. It’s said that on this day, the 28th of December, one can borrow something, and not have to return it. In fact, in the 19th century, elaborate schemes were concocted to get those who were not aware of the date to lend them things on this day. So, remember, this day folks. If successful, the victorious prankster would send a note to the lender and a gift of sweets or small toys in memory of the children killed by Herod with the note saying, "Innocent little dove who allowed yourself to be deceived, knowing that on this day, nothing should be lent.” The tradition developed into a day of pranks in general. By the way, it even includes newspapers printing false wild stories on that day. Hey, wait, don’t they do that everyday?  Yet I digress. This special practice is also celebrated online as well in recent years. Ha, No Duh! In Puerto Vallarta, there are going to be two evenings of fireworks. The Mexican people really love fireworks and in Puerto Vallarta with the 2nd Festival de Pirotecnia Luminia, a world-class fireworks show on the 30th and 31st. There will be concerts on the Malecon beginning at 7, and both the 30th and the 31st a huge firework exhibition that will blow you away. 20 minutes each night, plus, all of the hotels, the restaurants, the local neighborhood celebrations, wow, it is incredible. Given the fact that Puerto Vallarta is going to be at peak capacity for new years eve, it’s going to be quite a couple of days. The Coffee Fest Puerto Vallarta, to be held on December 16, will be the event in which the city will seek to impose a new brand of people gathering for one purpose, drinking coffee. The Germans currently have the Guinness Record of the most people drinking coffee at the same time, achieved on August 30, 2009 when 8,162 people gathered at the Jugendpark in Cologne to drink cold coffee. Although it is believed that a subsequent meeting in Colombia brought together more than 12,000 people, it was not verified and opened the doors for the organizers in Puerto Vallarta, who hope to summon 10 thousand coffee enthusiasts to defeat, at least in this regard, the Germans, and impose a new record. Okay, lets get to our guests, and to our interview. I first came to Vallarta in December of 1984. I had just met my wife, them my girlfriend, and we would return to Puerto Vallarta almost every year after that. Then we had our first child and we didn’t let that deter us one bit. We took Zachary with us when he was 3 months old. We stayed at a timeshare property, Villa de Palmar. It was a condo. We felt that the set-up was perfectly geared for a family traveling with child. Kitchen separate bedroom from the living area. A restaurant on the property. Pool beach, everything we needed. The property in in the Hotel zone. We rented a jeep for our stay and had the baby seat strapped in, ready for our next adventure. I recall one occasion when we were looking for a place to eat late one evening, and we stopped at Daiquiri Dicks. The ladies at the door asked us if they could look after the baby while we ate. Really? Well, we handed him over, and had the most enjoyable, carefree dinner of the trip. Not once did we even wonder what had become of Zachary. One day, the baby was crying and crying. I’m thinking for about an hour. And we were both fit to be tied. Then, out of nowhere, a little Mexican lady came up, and speaking to me in Spanish, told us what to do. We handed her the baby, and I don’t know what she did, but she had the magic. Three and a half years later, we returned to Puerto Vallarta with two boys this time. Zachary and little brother Jake. This time we stayed at the La Jolla de Mismaloya, now, the Barcello, down at Mismaloya Beach, 20 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta. The hotel had an all-inclusive option, but we opted to take care of the dining options ala Carte. A combination of eating in and taking a bus into town to eat out. We really had a wonderful time except for losing Jake. Go figure, the day we leave, we lose the kid. We were packed and ready to take a cab to the airport when we were distracted while loading the luggage into the cab, we turn around, and our 2-and-a-half-year child is gone. Just vanished into thin air. Well, panic set in. Especially when you consider there were all these pools, fountains and other bodies of water scattered all over the property. For about 15 minutes we scoured the property, asking along the way if anyone had seen a cute little boy with blond ringlets wander by. Finally, Debra found him, not far from where we were standing, waiting for the cab, upstairs above the lobby, being entertained by a member of the staff. Whew, that was a close one. Great way to end a perfect trip for sure right? When you take your children to Puerto Vallarta, keep in mind, if you are planning on bring a stroller, make it a very light weight foldable one. [caption id="attachment_2097" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] The Garcia Family in Puerto Vallarta[/caption] There are, especially in old town, uneven sidewalks, sidewalks with stairs built in, high curbs and cobblestone streets. You will be doing a whole lot of lifting and carrying of you stroller for sure. Also, if you usually travel with your child in a child safety seat in the car, you will need to determine what type of seat you will be bringing for your trip to strap into a taxi or an Uber ride. If you need anything baby related, food, formula, diapers, anything, you will be able to find it in Puerto Vallarta. They have Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco, Mega, Ley’s Soriana, the corner markets. One thing you will be able to find in Mexico, that’s baby supplies. All inclusive resorts, at least the ones that allow kids, usually have kid clubs and activities for the little ones. You will need to do your homework and make sure before you book a trip with junior, to see what’s available at the property you are looking at of course. I was looking at my twitter feed a couple of weeks back and say a group of tweets directed at me from a couple of listeners, David and Lucia Garcia. They were in Puerto Vallarta for the first time and they were with their kids. I contacted them and they shared some of their pictures with me and I just had to have them on the show to tell us about their experiences in Vallarta, with their two young daughters. I’ll have my microphones at the ready so come by and let’s gab. By the way, if you have a business that you want to pitch, a service you want to tell my listeners about, come by and give your business or service a pitch. Come on by, this coming Tuesday evening at Pour Favor on Lazaro Cardenas starting at 6:30, going for couple hours I imagine. Come by. Now I’m only going to be in town for just a couple of days, just enough time to get some very important interviews for you guys. And you know what? I still haven’t told my wife yet. Now, I know for a fact that she doesn’t listen to my podcast, so she won’t know till I break the news to her Friday morning. At least, I figure that should give her enough time to buy whatever she needs before we fly out of LAX Monday Morning. Fun fun, fun in the sun! Dia De Los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta Preparations are under way for the day of the Dead Celebrations or Dia de los Muertos, which take place right after the traditional Halloween in the states on the 31st of October, but in the states as well as in Mexico, Mexicans stretch out the celebrations out a little bit and in Mexico, Día de los Muertos is celebrated from the 31st to the 2nd of November. Anyway, there’s lots to be said about the upcoming celebrations throughout the Bajia, and I will be bringing you all of the activities planned for this very festive occasion in Puerto Vallarta. Actually, El Dia De Los Muertos, is the celebration that really kicks off the tourist season in Puerto Vallarta. Now speaking of next week, I will not have an episode of the podcast for you next week due to my planned travels to paradise. You just need to know that I’m not shirking my duties as podcast host,  I’m just going to be busy getting you some of the best interviews and on the ground information you can shake a stick at. Or whatever you shake, stick, whatever. Just go ahead and shake it at it. A Day Trip to San Pancho [caption id="attachment_1709" align="aligncenter" width="1250"] San Pancho Map[/caption] A couple of weeks back, I got an email from Polly who wanted me to do an episode on going to San Pancho. Actually, Polly gave me a great review on iTunes, and she made a request, and now Polly, I’m going to grant your wish and take a day trip with you to San Pancho. Actually formerly known as San Francisco, San Pancho is just 4 kilometers north of the hippy town of Sayulita. Sayulita is located about 38 kilometers north of the Puerto Vallarta Airport. Approximately a 45 minute drive. Now I began my day trip at about 2  on a Saturday afternoon. I was on the Southside and looked for a bus to take me to Walmart. Okay, I know what you are thinking, Barry, aren’t we going to San Pancho? Yes, we are going to San Pancho, so instead of me telling you all of the intricacies of bus taking in Puerto Vallarta, let’s review with JR. I have a clip of a conversation I had with him back in January about taking buses in Puerto Vallarta. Let’s see what he says about catching one of those buses from Vallarta, to those beach towns north. JR, Take it away!!!! Link to JR's Maps  Listen to The Podcast Okay, so I hopped on a bus that said Walmart on the windscreen and I told the driver that I wanted the bus to San Pancho. Quiero el bus a San Pancho. Which means, I want the bus to San Pancho. You can probably just say it in English, and the driver will most likely understand, but hey, learn the lingo. Write it down, practice it. So in this case, the driver did drop me off at the location JR talked about, the one at the beginning of the Libramiento. South, actually way south [caption id="attachment_1714" align="aligncenter" width="5312"] Tienda at The Puerto Vallarta Bus Stop South of Walmart[/caption] of Walmart. And he is right, I was able to get on the bus before the crowd did, and pretty much had my choice of seats. So the driver motioned to me when we got to the stop. I made sure I was sitting up front near him so he could give me the hi sign. So this place where you get dropped off has a tienda where you can buy drinks and stuff, and you walk a little south along the sidewalk and you will see busses lining up. Their destinations written on the windshields of the bus. Before you get on the bus, if you aren’t sure, just ask the driver. They will tell you how much to pay, and you pay them there. If you are planning on making several stops along the way, for instance if you want to stop for breakfast in Sayulita, then move on up north to San Pancho for Lunch, you pay in segments. There’s no day pass. Get it? So the busses are comfortable. Not air conditioned, but reclining seats, and the driver will play their favorite tunes as you travel along the coast, then cut across the Point. If you go to the website at www.puertovallartatravelshow,com, you will see the rout, and the towns you pass through on your way up to San Pancho. [caption id="attachment_1745" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Bus to San Pancho[/caption] You hit Bucerias, and just before you get to Cruz de Huanacaxtle, route 200 cuts inland, bypassing the Punta de Mita, and travels through a wooded jungle like [caption id="attachment_1740" align="alignleft" width="1000"] San Francisco/San Pancho Fruit Stand[/caption] area, well, it is a jungle out there, really, and eventually you arrive at the coast, in the town of Sayulita. You can get off here, and like JR said, the bus actually drops you off in the middle of town, so you  can actually get off the bus right there, and start exploring the hippit dippie town of Sayulita. It’s colorful, and gringoized with lots of specialty shops, not just your typical Mexican souvenirs, although you will find that too. Great places to eat, and the surfing is all the rage. Although, use caution, there have been many reports of unclean waters there. Something about too many people and not sufficient facilities to properly treat raw sewage. So ask questions before entering the water, and use caution. But hey….we’re on our way to San Pancho right? We are going to stay on that bus, because we paid to get to San Pancho right? Right. The bus continues up the coast to the next stop which is San Pancho. The Bus Stops alongside the highway, at the intersection of Highway 200 and Avineda Tercer Mundo, or in English, Third World Avenue. Kinda has a lovely ring to it doesn’t it?. Humm.  So the bus lets the passengers off at Third World Avenue where there is a huge Pemex station. You cross the highway, and follow the Third World road right to the beach. Like JR said, the walk is about a mile or so, and it takes you right to the beach. You will pass very colorful shops, hotels, B & B’s, Hostels, and restaurants as you walk down this road, and you will see the homes of the people of the town of San Pancho, on the streets behind these establishments. [caption id="attachment_1736" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] San Pancho[/caption] Now, if you don’t want to walk, just wait around for a taxi to take you into town if you like, but if you are in good enough shape, the walk is totally worth it. The closer you get to the beach, the more restaurants you will find, and shops and stuff, and when you get to the end of the road, it makes a T right into the beach. [caption id="attachment_1737" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] San Pancho, Nayarit[/caption] To your right and left you will find numerous beachfront eateries. Now unlike in Puerto Vallarta, this is a wide beach. Lots of sand. So there’s lots of room at this beach to stretch out. To your left, there is a lagoon, and the beach curves out to a rocky outcropping. To the right, the beach stretches for almost a mile. It’s a big beach, I’m telling you. So food and drink are abundant here at and near the beach. The waves are not the quality of Sayulita, but I’ve heard the water is cleaner to swim in. If you want to see a really cool video of San Pancho from the air, my buddy Dan The Flying Man Dimov has this wonderful YouTube video with him flying along in his Paramotor machine, along the coast in San Pancho. [embed]https://youtu.be/p-KEUtAGW8g[/embed] In fact, I’m going to be interviewing Dan on my visit to Puerto Vallarta next week, and I can’t wait to introduce you to him. He takes people up in the air. Tandem on his glider, so you have to check out the video, and definitely listen to the podcast when I air it in the coming weeks. Dan also has a wonderful video he shot the day of the full solar eclipse, along the coast over the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta. I’ll add that video too to the show notes so check that one out too. I can’t make up my mind which one I like best. You decide. [embed]https://youtu.be/moLff_OiPoI[/embed]   I also have some screenshots thanks to Google Earth, showing the town, the bus drop-off spot and the path you will take into town, down Avenida Tercer Mundo. I just love that! So where do you eat? They have a great Bar-b-Que place called Mr. Ribs San Pancho. I couldn’t help myself, it smelled so good. I had pork ribs and [caption id="attachment_1726" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Mr Ribs[/caption] the fixings. Pretty darn good, and the people watching was great too. Then there is a branch of El Barracuda, run by the same group as in Vallarta. Las Palmas Bar and Grill is the biggest place right on the beach they have lots of loungers for you to sit on and sip an umbrella drink, and watch the people play in the sun, at the beach. There are lots of Mexican families playing at the beach, and of course, tourists too.  Anyway, you won’t go hungry in San Pancho, or San Francisco. Actually, the town is called San Francisco, and the Beach is called San Pancho Beach, but everyone calls the whole place San Pancho, there are literally dozens of places to eat all around you. It’s pretty cool! [caption id="attachment_1729" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] El Barracuda, San Pancho[/caption] I spotted a doughnut lady, and made a beeline for her, and purchased a couple of yummy pastries which I happily munched and headed back up the road, back to highway 200 for my ride back to Vallarta. Once you get to the highway, go to the right and walk about 100 feet to where the busses stop to pick you up, and head back to Walmart, I mean Vallarta. Now bus rides in Puerto Vallarta never are ordinary. Every once in a [caption id="attachment_1746" align="alignright" width="300"] Singer on The Bus[/caption] while, the driver will let someone on the bus who will clear his or her throat and begin a soliloquy, in Spanish of course, and proclaim to their captive audience, we bus riders, their cause, whether it’s a sick family member, maybe they are out of a job and need to feed their family, maybe speak on behalf of a particular cause, and then at the end of their plea, and let me tell you, these guys are really good, I mean, well-spoken and practiced, they will work their way through the bus, hat in hand, collecting pesos from the riders, then, when the bus makes the next stop, they are out the back door of the bus. Sometimes these take longer than a stop or two. I had one where the driver let this guy on, dressed like a clown who literally went on and on for about 15 minutes. Oh my god! But on this ride home, the driver let on this guy you are hearing now. This guy had a jukebox item around his neck, and he sang to the music. He was a pro. He was a little guy, but he sang with such heart. I recorded it for you to listen to. Please indulge me as I play it for you, to get the flavor of the ride, home from San Pancho. [caption id="attachment_1718" align="alignleft" width="300"] Walmart in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1717" align="alignleft" width="300"] Walmart in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] So you go to Walmart or to the end of the line, and either take a cab back to your hotel, or a bus back, if you feel comfortable. Just remember, if you are going to the Southside, look for a bus that says Centro on it and not Pittial. Otherwise, you may go on one of those magical mystery tours that JR talks about in our episode about taking busue in Puerto Vallarta. And if you haven’t listened to that one, you really ought to have a look. Also, I have a copy of JR’s map that shows the bus stops that I talked about here. So, that’s the day-trip to San Pancho. Give yourself at least 5 hours total to take the bus back and forth, to get the flavor of the town, to get a bite to eat and a spot to drink, and maybe, just maybe have an opportunity to be serenaded by this guy. Jorullo Suspension Bridge [caption id="attachment_944" align="alignleft" width="762"] Jorullo Suspension Bridge Canopy River Zipline Tours, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] JR sent me an article a couple of months back about a suspension bridge built by the folks at the Canopy River Zipline Adventure Tours, and my [caption id="attachment_942" align="alignright" width="300"] Canopy River Zipline Tours, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] buddies Jennifer and Dee along with JR were great to to pass along the information, so I spoke with Edgar Lopez at Canopy River and we will have that episode coming up really soon. Maybe even next week. We’ll see, but this bridge the Jorullo Suspension Bridge is like 4 football fields long and is suspended over the  Caule’ River Gorge.  JR walked the length of it and they drive vehicles over it like their ATV’s. It went like this…  First off let me introduce myself, my name is Ray and I’m from Wisconsin.  My wife Cherie and I feel the same way you and many others feel about Puerto Vallarta.  It was my wife and I’s first trip together when dating back in 2001 and we have been coming back almost every year since.  We travel to other locations sometimes, but always make time to return to Puerto Vallarta.  Through the years we have met many friends both local and north of the boarder.  We enjoy some of our old favorites and always find new places of interest.  As time goes on we are lucky to be able to spend more time there, we are up to two weeks.  We are very lucky, but always look forward to returning after we get home.  Thank you for your shows, I enjoy listening to them.  I know you ask for suggestions so I wanted to sit down and type you up a correspondence about some of our favorite places are….. So that was cool because I needed an interview with the owner of Twisted Palms Al Sellers, and you can hear that interview in the Plaza Romy podcast I did a couple of weeks back. Anyway, I get to Twisted Palms and look around the big bar Al has there, and try to decide who Ray and Cherie are. They are such a great couple, you will see soon. I asked if they wanted to come up into the hood to my Airbnb and they offered to have me come to their condo at the Vista Del Sol Condo complex, right on the ocean, overlooking Playa Los Muertos, the Malecon, just a beautiful property. I’m glad they didn’t come to my humble apartment looking back. They would have defiantly been unimpressed. That gonna make it easier to get your pesos when you land at the airport with your ATM debit card. He reached out to me and told me his story and I just had to bring him to you. His name is Steven Tenney and he is from New Jersey. Just love his accent I gotta say. Steven is a musician, he is a drummer for the Group Tequila Rush. Now the Group Tequila Rush   was created in 2015 by Carlos Urrea and Carlos came up with the name, he is the band leader, plays guitar and sings and  Danny Hermosillo who plays the bass and sings as well and Steven rounds out the trio. The group was created  as a trio for clubs and private parties around the bay area and they play year round. They don’t stop for the summer months. They play classic, and contemporary rock as well as wide selection of Spanish lyric Rock to cater to a domestic audience as too. They like to think of themselves as a “Music of your life” kind of group. Both Carlos and Danny are from Guadalajara and live in Puerto Vallarta and although I didn’t get a chance to talk with them, I hope to sit with them when I get into town next month and hear from them what they like to do in and around Puerto Vallarta.  Now Steven is going to come on and tell us a little about some places to go dancing and listen to music and party all along the Bahia de Banderas. And he is going to tell us about some places I didn’t know even existed. I mean, alligator sanctuaries, and fresh water lakes for fishing in Nayarit, near the capitol of Tepic, maybe about 2 hours from Puerto Vallarta.  Many of my listeners have asked for suggestions of places outside of Vallarta, and you will be getting your wish today. La Cruz just 2 more exits north. Crocodile Sanctuary In between Bucerias and La Cruz is Flamingo's Golf course and residences. ON the side of the highway heading to PV ON south side.  RIGHT NEXT TO FLAMINGOS GOLF COURSE is Santuario de Cocodrilos El Cora.  you need to be looking for it. small dirt road and small sign. It's about a mile drive in but what a cool natural sanctuary it is...  more than just crocs...it's a natural zoo and estuary too. educational tour available. I'm an airplane Dispatcher and also starting to do some vids for a YouTube channel to talk about vallarta, pointed at ppl that make it a home, subjects such as where, when, do, don't, expensive, most value etc  Also planning on focusing in micro restaurants that have flavors most have probably never tasted. For sure...  I also provide info on how the flights are doing... Specially in weekends  I know it is rough not knowing when ur loved ones will get out and have to wait ages for them to make it out in the lobby where you buy your travel voucher for your taxi or van to your hotel or lodging. I got this email from Listener Linda who writes… Hi - I've listed to a few of your episodes. Just listened to the one about bus travel. Thanks for doing these. I have a topic idea.  It's regarding salaries. I've read that people working at hotels for example make the equivalent of $7 US a day. This doesn't make sense to me. Where do these people shop? I know they might not shop in the tourist areas where prices are high. But how can they afford clothes, food, a pop, a bag of chips? Even a couple of bus rides a day would put a serious dent into their daily wage. I've seen locals shop at Ley's. Do they get a discount? How much would a cashier at Ley's get paid? I'm  just trying to make sense of this. I always tip all service staff and assume a lot of people do also, so that would increases salary's but not by much. Just curious. Well Linda, I talked with Eduardo about your question and if you’er listening, and I know you will be, he will give you his best answer to your questions. As I understand it, minimum daily wage in Mexico is like $4.50 a day US. Just sayin’. Two Taco Stands we frequent often are El Flaco and the one by Archie's Wok.  I've been going to that one for years, they remember me when I show up, but realize I've never asked the name.   My wife just informed me it's listed as Tacos El Cunado. Last year we hiked with Al from Twisted Palms and his friends from Boca to Los Animas and eat and drank at El Caracol.  What a great time. Hello fellow travelers, welcome to this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show, all about buses in Puerto Vallarta.  I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be  to introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. It’s really interesting. It’s easy and fun.   This episode I will be talking buses in Puerto Vallarta with my friend JR in PV. Now you guys have to cut me a little slack here please because I’m just getting used to the long distance interviewing and the proper recording levels and all that other wonky tech stuff. What I’m saying is that it will get better in future interviews so please bear with me as I improve my technique I have been told by the best in the business, don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good. So with that that in mind, let’s ask JR, is it okay to take buses in Puerto Vallarta? What about …. take buses in Puerto Vallarta? JR, what about buses? Are the safe? Are you gonna find chickens and livestock on them? What do you expect when you get onto a bus? JR:         We don’t have chicken bus, going back we did. First what we have to understand the bus system here was not built for tourists. It was built to get people to and from work. For children to get o and from school, etcetera etcetera. The roads tend to go through the residential areas. The local residential areas where tourists will be completely lost. Barry:    Interesting, because I found most bus drivers don’t speak English very well. I imagine that’s why they don’t interact with tourists that much. JR:         Some do, if you can say the destination in Spanish, they’ll either say Yes or No. Another thing to consider of course is downtown, we basically have two North-South streets. In other words, in order to get to the South side of town to the North side of town you got to go through one of those streets. Basically, if you’re going North it’s one street. Going South, it’s another. Consequently, there’s a lot of business that go through downtown then go off into all these weird many areas that I’ve never seen. Barry:    You mentioned on your website a very funny thing. You  say take a mystery tour, hop on the bus and see where it takes you. Sounds like a lot of fun. Would there be a place that you would take a bus to nowhere that you wouldn’t want to go. JR:         No. It’s a cheap trip it’s just seven and a half pesos. There and back it’s 15 pesos. You go to the end of the line. Sometimes the bus will turn around back. Sometimes there’s another bus waiting to go back. If you change course of course you have to pay twice. Barry:    Sure. So do you need exact change when you get on a bus? JR:         It helps. Seven and a half pesos. 50 centavo coin is a tiny thing. Barry:    You’ll lose it. JR:         Very small and difficult to find in your pocket sometimes. Barry:    That’s for sure. What is this little white piece of paper the driver gives you when you get on a bus? First time I got on a bus I thought it was for transfer or something. JR:         No, that shows that you paid. And occasionally an inspector would come in and look at the numbers at the bus drivers stack of tickets and go through the bus and check the numbers if everybody's been issued one. And that the driver is not cheating by not giving a ticket. Barry:    That’s what that’s for. They don’t have these cameras that they have here in the States to keep an eye on your drivers and keep them all good and honest. Actually they’re handing you their ticket which is a receipt. JR:         Yes, it’s a receipt. And also I believe it covers you in case of accident. Although, I can’t even remember ever there being a bus accidents where anybody got hurt inside the bus. Barry:    That’s good to know. Let’s say that you arrive at the airport and all you have is a carry on baggage. Maybe a backpack, a roll-away, you’re traveling light. Can you catch a bus from the airport to where you’re going either North or South of the airport? JR:         Only South, no, North or South really.. The ones going North will be not city buses but long distance buses most of them because the border of the next state is just north of the airport. Everything going there is basically an intercity bus. The buses coming South basically are coming from Ixtapa, Las Palmas not that many. One of them that I’ve taken before is a magical mystery tour. Although it said central, it eventually got there but it took a long long time. We ended up in the hinterland. I don’t know where we were. I just sat there and crossed my fingers. Eventually it got to the South side where they all end up. In the case of coming through the airport, avoid any bus going South that says Pitillal because that’s the first place the magical mystery tour bus goes. Barry:    It kinds of winds it way to Pitillal I imagine. JR:         It goes to Pitillal and it goes to other colonias that I’ve never seen before. Barry:    So you’re gonna be looking for a bus going South that doesn’t say Pitillal on it. But do you have a specific like Central on it. What does it say? JR:         Central. I don’t think there are tunnel buses that go by the airport. I might be wrong. I should explain that if it says tunnel which is spelled T-U-N-E-L pronounced “too-nle” this goes on the bypass road around downtown avoiding that constriction there. If you’re going to the south side or going from the South side North and you want to avoid downtown and the delay going through that traffic. You take the bypass road which is called Libra Miento which basically means it’s free. Barry:    Okay, it will also say tunel on it right? JR:         Yes. “too-nle”. T-U-N-E-L. That will avoid downtown if you’re going from the hotel zone, the Marina or any hotel towards the airport you want to go to the South side of town you can avoid downtown by taking the Tunel Bus. Barry:    Okay, got it. If you’re taking a  bus from from the hotel zone that’s pretty much just going through downtown, isn’t it? JR:         Right. They all go to the South side but from the hotel zone  some would take the bypass road.  You can see it quite easily on my map. And you can click on that. It starts from the Marina airport area all the way down to Mismaloya. Barry:    Okay, and it actually shows the right buses to take. JR:         Yes. I also have maps of North of the airport. Barry:    Fantastic, so this is one of the reasons why you all need to go to vallartainfo.com and click on that map tab. Bring them down and you can see how nice and detailed these are. They give restaurants.They give locations ofwhere to catch those buses. JR:         It shows the bus stops.  Well, most of them. Barry:    That is so invaluable. These destinations are put on the windshields of the buses right? JR:         At the top of the bus, there’s a window that’s their main destination window. That will tell you where they will end up. Then right on the windscreen the various places that you might want to go to. For instance Wal-Mart it might say IMSS which is the local state hospital. It may mention markets like Mega or Soriana. It may also mention places in between the main destination and the origin. Barry:    So those are the tips when you’re looking at the bus. To understand where they’re going at the end which is along the top. The stops they make along the way which is written on the windscreen. JR:         For instance, Marine Terminal if you want to take an excursion that’s leaving from the Marine Terminal you would want to look for the bus that says Wal-Mart and Marine Terminal. If you go to the Marina which is not the same as the Marine Terminal and is quite the distance away. You need to take the Marina Bus. There’s only one bus that drives into the residential area of the Marina. That will say Marina on top. This particular bus is not very regular about every 20 mins. Barry:    If you want to go to the Marina you really need to plan for not having a bus come pick you up right away. JR:         Right, it’s not as frequent as the other buses. The other buses are every five minutes there’s another bus. Barry:    It seems like it’s a congo line of buses in Puerto Vallarta. JR:         If you’re going South, let’s say to Mismaloya Boca de Tomatlan There’s the bus that goes from the South side all the way to Boca de Tomatlan and then turns around and comes back. That is eight pesos. Barry:    So seven and half for city bus all the way up to the airport-ish. If you are going to catch that Mismaloya bus, it goes down to Boca that will cost you eight pesos. What’s eight pesos today? About 40 cents? JR:         Yes, I think. If  you’re going further South to say to the Botanical Garden or to El Tuito. There’s another bus that leaves on the corner of Aguacate and Carranza and that will cost you 28 pesos all the way to El Tuito and takes about 50 minutes. Barry:    It’s a regular city bus too? JR:         It’s intercity bus because El Tuito is considered to be another city. Barry:    And that one you catch and will take you even further South. JR:         Right, if you’re going to see the Botanical Garden. They say to Botanical Garden it’s only 20 pesos but quite often just take 28 which is all he way to El Tuito. Barry:    Tell me what’s El Tuito like? JR:         El Tuito is quite a bit older than Puerto Vallarta. It was a stop on the Camino Real, the King’s road from Barra de Navidad to the mines. The Manila boat coming from the Philippines would stop occasionally at Barra de Navidad and unload some goodies for the mines. Maybe take on a little silver but mainly unload some goodies for the mines. They would go by oxcart and mule all the way up this road. It was quite primitive in those days and El Tuito was about halfway and it’s a valley and it had grazing and it had  water. They would stop there and eventually they built some accommodation and that was the start of the town. Barry:    I just saw not too long ago a post of you going down to El Tuito. JR:         We went to El Tuito which is on the way to a couple of beaches called Playa Mayto and a fishing village called Teramecle. Barry:    I think pretty much covers most of what I want to talk about, well not really. JR:         This bus is going North. Barry:    Yes, that’s what I was gonna say what about the bus going North? JR:         Right, do you want to get to Nueva Vallarta Bucerías, Punta de Mita, Sayulita, Lo de Marcos La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and all those place in Rincón de Guayabitos, a lot of them are covered in the bus line called ATM. Not to be confused with the cash machine. Compostela Pacifico line the ATM only goes to Punta de Mita at around the bay for Sayulita your location you need the Compostela Pacifico line. These are all available at Wal-Mart. There’s a special bus stop for these buses going North, not city buses. Barry:    You catch the buses at Wal-Mart that sounds just like a commercial. I like that. You catch a bus if you’re going to North and get the Compostela bus. You need to get to Wal-Mart first. JR:         There’s one stop before Wal-Mart, the first stop is right at the end of libramiento departamento of the hotel zone. It’s marked on my map. It’s a good one to get to if you want to get a seat if it’s very busy. Barry:    It’s really going to be busy going up North especially in the  mornings when people are going to work, right? JR:         Exactly. This applies going to South as well. If you want to go at Boca de Tomatlan went down to catch the first bus on the South side you might want to go to next bus in line to get a seat. Because quite often you’d be standing. Barry:    Those are fun trips when you’re standing in the trips especially the South one. How about the North one is it just as fun? JR:         It’s good. It gets busy. I even had a lady offer me a seat once. Barry:    No. JR:         I guess she thought I was really old. Barry:    These buses are interstate buses. They go from Jalisco to Nayarit? JR:         Right, they’re considered inter-city. Barry:    What kind of pesos do we need to bring along when we go to Punta de Mita and we hop on that bus over at- JR:         Let’s see, Bucerias is 14 pesos. Nuevo Vallarta is either 15 or 18 pesos depending on whether you go to North end or South end of it. La Cruz de Huanacaxtle  is 18 pesos. Punta de Mita is 26. Sayulita is 35 I believe. And that takes you right into Sayulita and that’s the best bus to get for Sayulita. Barry:    Sayulita they go farther North? JR:         If you want to go further  North let’s say San Pancho which is actually called San Francisco but everybody calls it San Pancho. Lo de Marcos,  La Cruz de Huanacaxtle are all on the way on that road that eventually goes to Tepic the capital of Nayatrit. Those buses won’t go into these various peach towns. They will drop you in the highway and you have to huff it in to the actual town. Usually it’s less than a mile. Barry:    All those buses you catch at Wal-Mart. JR:         Wal-Mart is the most recognizable location. Everybody knows what it looks like. You can actually get earlier as I said at the beginning of the hotel zone and it’s marked on my map. If you want to get seat. It also stops at airport if you wave it down. Buses will stop for you whether it’s not natural regular stop. On the South road or Northern road as long as it’s a place they can pull off because there are only two lanes. Then they will stop. In order to wave them down, not wave at them. They’ll more likely wave back. Barry:    What’s the right sign? JR:         The way to stop the bus is to point in the middle of the road right in front of you. The bus will stop. Barry:    They take directions. Instead of waving and saying hey there what you’re saying is stop right here. Right where I’m pointing. JR:         This is the tradition down here. They never wave and the bus drivers know if that means somebody wants you to stop. If you wave they might think you’re waving at somebody else. Barry:    If you are a visitor coming to Puerto Vallarta would you suggest ever renting a car? JR:         No I wouldn’t at all. Unless you’re planning on driving to somewhere whether it’s not a regular bus service like San Sebastian. You can’t really have a day drive on San Sebastian because the time you get there it’s almost time to go back. Because they have about four buses a day. Barry:    San Sebastian, that is the silver mining town up in the hills. JR:         Up in the mountains. 4,600 feet is pretty high. Barry:    Is there anything else that you can think of that we need to know about the public bus system down here? JR:         Just be ready to hold on because quite often the driver will take off while he’s making change. Barry:    Keep an eye on that. Make sure you always turn around. Don’t leave anything on the bus,very important, before you leave because you may not get it back. Or maybe you will? JR:         People get their stuff back right where they left behind sometimes but there’s not central garage or anything. A lot of these buses are owned by the drivers and they drive them home. Barry:    I didn’t know that. That’s very interesting. JR:         The bus companies but they’re like cooperatives in a way. Some of the bus companies own a bunch of buses and in effect rent them out to the driver. Other drivers actually own the bus. And work with the cooperative and pay cooperative a certain amount. Barry:    That’s pretty precise description of what’s going on down on the ground in Puerto Vallarta regarding buses and bus system there. Just remember everybody; if you have the urge to rent the car don’t. Unless you’re gonna go where the buses and the cab won’t take you. Speaking of cabs, in another episode you and I will be talking about taxis. Is that okay JR? JR:         Sure that’s fine. I would interject also if you’re going to rent a car, the only rental company I can always really 100% recommend are Gecko Car Rental. They’re not in town they’re in Bucerias. But they will come and bring your car anywhere including the airport. They’re the only ones that don’t have bad press. Barry:    Thanks that a great tip then. Gecko for those of you who are thinking about renting a car. If you really really got to do it. Do it in through this company in Bucerias called Gecko. JR once again, you are a huge fount of information for us , for my listeners, for our listeners. I really really appreciate you coming out today again. JR:         Welcome Barry. So that was quite an in depth look at taking buses in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. A couple of items I want to touch base on before we leave this subject behind and that is the conversation I had with JR about taking a bus from the Airport. I would never suggest that you take a bus if you are a first time traveler to Vallarta. That is a bus from the airport to your hotel. It would be silly. I’m just talking about the seasoned traveler who is traveling light. No luggage just a backpack. That bus you can catch along side the arrivals terminal under the pedestrian bridge and look for a bus that says Centro on it. The other item I wanted to mention is that the Mismaloya bus that also goes to Boca de Tomatlan can be found at the corner of Basillo Badillo and Constitution. They are orange and white buses and will cost you 8 pesos.And I just want to remind you that the bus to  El Tuito and the Botanical Gardens is at Aguacate and Carranza. I should also mention, since we are talking pesos and dollars, as of this podcast, January 22, 2017  the Mexican peso to the US dollar is almost 22 pesos to 1.  I also have to add that we have experienced an increase of up to 20% in fuel prices in the last weeks here in mexico so taxi and bus prices are expected to rise in the near future but never fear, we will keep you up to date as things on the ground change. Thus far however, we haven’t seen any drastic changes in transportation costs to the end user. Puerto Vallarta offers so much to any traveler who’s looking for a fun filled seaside vacation. There is something for everyone here. Traveling on a Budget? Are you on a budget?  No problem, Puerto Vallarta has plenty of opportunities for the budget traveler.  In fact, when I first came here with my wife, well, she was my girlfriend at the time some 32 years ago, we were looking at Hawaii and Puerto Vallarta, and we chose Vallarta just because we could actually afford it. We chose a travel package that included air and a week stay at the Playa Los Arcos Hotel in Southside, romantic zone,  PV, right on the water. It’s still there today and is still going strong. It was cheap, and you can still get great package deals through all the travel ticket sites. I know that the package deal is very popular with Canadians. Luxury Accommodations Maybe you aren’t a budget conscious traveler but a luxury seeker. Perhaps your idea of a perfect vacation is being pampered. Maybe you want to have a massage on the beach, or just prefer sitting by the pool drinking and eating. Maybe you don’t even want to leave the property.  You prefer the all inclusive food and drink experience. Everything included, in some places even the tips. For many I suppose, lounging, reading being pampered, getting a poolside or Oceanside massage, a spa treatment,  having the staff know you by name, having a private beach with beachside service is an important part of the vacation experience.  Not me, just sayin, but I’m not here to judge. I’m here to learn from all of you fellow travelers. Maybe I’m missing something. I’m willing to be proven wrong. I’ll keep an open mind during our travels together. So there are the real budget digs that can cost you around $20/ night US, and there are places like the Four Seasons Punta Mita that will cost you around $1,550 a night. Air BnB’s have made it down here in a big way, There’s apartment and condo rental specialists for those looking to have an extended stay. What I’m getting at is there are lots of properties all along the Bajia de Banderas that will suit any traveler’s needs and we are going to visit them and talk about them. We are going to talk to the hotel representatives and to you the everyday traveler to get your first hand experiences. It’s going to be fun.  This is going to be an interactive experience. Since this is the first episode I want to give you an overview as to what to expect from the show as it unfolds for you on a weekly basis. The first shows will concentrate on the basics. The history of Puerto Vallarta, the current lay of the land, geography, the local customs. What are the best months of the year to visit? We will talk about getting there.  Are you driving? Are you flying into the airport, are you just stopping for a day on a cruise liner and only have a few hours to get a feel for Vallarta? Important Travel Information What to pack, Passports and length of your stay, what to expect when you arrive at the airport. Can you bring your pet?  How about Groceries and Shopping for the basics? Can I get what I want? Are there supermarkets? Are there convenience stores like 7/11’s? We are going to talk about exchanging money, can you drink the water? Is it okay to eat the food? Is the ice okay in the margaritas and in my coke? What about the crime?  Is it safe in Puerto Vallarta? Can you walk the streets at night? How about the police? Can you trust them? What are the people like? Can you trust them? How about the bugs? Mosquitoes? How do we prepare for that? And then there’s Transportation, once we arrive. How do we all get around?  Should you rent a car? What should you do before you get into a taxi or get on a bus.  I know what you are thinking…I’m gonna get kidnapped…I’m in Mexico! What, A BUS?? You mean like a chicken bus you ask??? Well… We will be talking about that too. We will be talking about all of that in the first couple of podcasts.   So we are going to cover all the basics and get you prepared because I want you to have the safest and most awesome vacation you have ever had. I’ve had help from many people I’ve met in Puerto Vallarta and you are going to meet many of them as the show progresses over the weeks to come. One of them is a guy I know you will like. You may even know him or have heard of him. This man was a regular poster, I would say he was a regular character on an internet web forum, well let’s say it happens to be  a very popular travel advice website. Anyway, his name is John and he is best known as JR in PV. JR has lived in Puerto Vallarta for 40 years, 30 of them permanently, and for almost 30 years, he has been giving advice to travelers coming to this fair city. Well, JR has promised me that he will join us on a weekly basis to answer your questions and to tell us about what is happening during the week in Puerto Vallarta. He is an expat from London and as you will see, he still hasn’t picked up the local accent; I will have to ask him about that. You’d think he would have shaken off that English accent but, as we all know, guys that talk like that just sound smarter. Nicely detailed and I will be referring to it as we make our journey through the city in the upcoming episodes of the show. JR and Barry have a conversation about drinking the water in Puerto Vallarta. Listen to the Podcast.  Although it wasn't discussed in the podcast, I was told by JR that resorts and hotels in Nuevo Vallarta have their own water treatment plants and therefore, although while you are outside of the resorts you will need bottled water, while at the resorts and hotels in Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias and Punta de Mita, you should have little concern. Remember to ask. So what next? As I said, the next couple of episodes, we’ll be talking about  the history of Vallarta, and lessons and the basic travel do’s and don’ts , then what?  Well there is so much. Puerto Vallarta Restaurants As you may or may not have heard, Puerto Vallarta is an incredible foodie destination with over 700 restaurants. Really! We will be interviewing numerous restaurateurs here in town and get their stories. We will hear about their menus, their awards, their struggles working in a town with so much competition for the tourist dollars.  I will be interviewing Gary Beck, author of the Puerto Vallarta Food guide and writer for the Banderas News, covering the entertainment beat. Gary will be talking food and you guessed it entertainment! So food and restaurants will be a big part of this show. Then we will talk about what to do,  what tours should a first timer take and what a visitor should not miss. Water Sports This is a seaside destination with all sorts of types of water sports and romantic, beautiful beaches where you can sit under a palapa/ umbrella, and have food and drink served to you. You can hire una launcha to take you out to Secluded beaches before the crowds hit. There’s fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, parasailing, sailing and sailboat excursions out of the Marina Vallarta. From  Nuevo Vallarta and PV  you can catch a boat to the Marietta Islands. We’re going to tell you all of the greatest places to go and what not to miss, or if you just want to lounge and relax, you can just hear all about what you are missing and just don’t care. Remember, this is a sharing podcast. Maybe you are an adventurer traveler and like to hike, zip-line do healthy invigorating stuff. Well Puerto Vallarta has got you covered and we will talk about you guys. Puerto Vallarta Charities Perhaps you are the kind of traveler who isn’t happy unless they are helping others. Maybe you feel guilty enjoying yourself while others are suffering. You know who you are. You are do-gooders.   Well you do-gooders are in luck, Puerto Vallarta has so many opportunities for you to do all sorts of good. Maybe you want to help out at one of the many children’s charities set up in Vallarta. Maybe you don’t like kids and just so happens you love animals and want to help out at the local ASPCA or the pet spay and neuter clinic.  There is an entire list of these organizations where your help and funds are needed and would be appreciated and I have added a couple to my website of links to do-gooder websites in PV that you can visit. Puerto Vallarta Real Estate My real job is selling homes. I know a whole lot about selling houses in Southern California. That’s how I can afford to make Puerto Vallarta my second home away from home. In fact, I do another podcast called the Southern California Real Estate Answer Man Show where I do tutorials on buying and selling Real Estate in California. Anyway because of my natural interest in the subject of buying and selling homes, we are going to talk with local Realtors, brokers and attorneys  about foreigners buying property in Puerto Vallarta. We are talking real property not timeshares here, we  are talking about buying the whole enchilada.  About buying a home or condo. It’s not going to be a big part of the show, but we are going to definitely touch on the subject. Maybe more than a touch, maybe a little heavy petting, but we will see. Look, I think that people who come here more than once start looking around and asking themselves, where would I like to live if I lived here. It is certainly a thought provoking subject if just for the voyeurism of the whole thing. Puerto Vallarta Timeshares Talking of timeshares,  we will be talking timeshares in an episode or two, that’s  because it seems everywhere you turn around in this town, someone is trying to sell you a timeshare. We will be spending some time discussing the good and the bad of those timeshare opportunities with people who sell them, people who hate them and the people who just love them. Some have multiple timeshares and we will hear from them. Puerto Vallarta Rentals And if purchasing your little piece of paradise isn’t in the cards for you, we will be talking with people living in Puerto Vallarta who handle long term and short term rentals. These people and can find you a place to stay the winter, not in a hotel or a resort, but a condo or an apartment or a full on home.  So many of you are snowbirds spending 3-5 months in paradise instead of battling the freezing temperatures In Minisocold, or Cleveland Ohio, or you Canadians up in Canadia from Manitoba, Toronto, Vancouver BC,  Saskatoon Saskatchewan, I just wanted to say that   and  all over that great country to the north. Canadians are finding that their dollarettes go a lot further in Puerto Vallarta than at home in Canada. That’s why you will find such a large Canadian Expat population in PV. For some reason Canadians love this place. Of course there’s plenty of American US expats living in Puerto Vallarta as well. Expats in Puerto Vallarta We will be talking with the expats here in Puerto Vallarta, from one end of the bay to the other to get their stories too. We will discuss their reasons for moving to paradise…duh.., their challenges and successes making a go at living in Mexico. Are they looking to get a Mexican Passport and citizenship, or are they just happy to have resident status. We will have a couple of shows that cover those issues as well. Get Married in Puerto Vallarta Perhaps you are considering Puerto Vallarta as your destination wedding location. Many brides to be see themselves getting married with the ocean and sand and the fantastic setting of Bandares Bay as the backdrop of their ideal wedding. Others see themselves wed at the famous Church of our lady de Guadalupe, That beautiful crowned church you see in all of those tourist photos of Puerto Vallarta. Yes, that church. You can be married there.  Maybe you have decided to renew your vows in paradise and want to invite your favorite people in the world to share your special moment with you. Well, we will be talking with local wedding planners, Bakers, Dressmakers, florists, photographers, caterers and hotel operators as well as other property owners who specialize in making your destination wedding the talk of the town and an incredible memory for you to hold in your hearts for your entire lives. Art in Puerto Vallarta Maybe you are interested in the numerous art galleries throughout Vallarta. We will be talking with a number of local artists, many of them expats themselves who now call Puerto Vallarta their home. We will be talking with local native Mexican artists as well. I have an upcoming interview Gary Thompson, who is the owner and director of Galleria Pacifico, and he will also give us a tour of the local artwork on the Malecon, the oceanfront boardwalk in Old Town Puerto Vallarta where there are the most fantastic, some would say unusual looking sculptures and artwork that are so popular here along the waterfront here in downtown PV. During the high season every Tuesday morning at 9:30,  Gary gives a free walking tour where he describes the artwork and talks about the artists too. It’s going to be a real treat. Cooking and Art Classes in Puerto Vallarta Maybe you are looking to enrich yourselves by taking a Spanish course or a cooking class so you can cook like a local. Maybe you want to take an art class with a local artist. We will be interviewing these teachers who are eager to share their knowledge so you can bring it home with you to share with your family and friends. And you can relive those experiences each and every day. Imagine if you will learning from some of the most amazing chefs in the whole world. Wow! You can do that here, and you will be so glad you listened to this show because now you have the bug. Puerto Vallarta is LGBTQ Friendly Puerto Vallarta is a LGBTQ friendly town. You will find, especially on the south side of town that Vallarta has plenty of Gay daytime  and Night time activities with , Clubs, Bars and Restaurants, beaches and even special tours actually offered specifically for gay tourists here. So yes, the Rainbow flag is flown quite proudly here in Vallarta. And we are going to dedicate at least one show to the LGBTQ community here and the clubs and restaurants that are frequented by the gay community here in Vallarta. I'm telling you, you should check out that show, it should be very interesting.  Theater Arts in Puerto Vallarta Puerto Vallarta was put on the map by Hollywood Director John Houston and Richard Burton and Liz Taylor when the night of the iguana was filmed back in 1964, so it should come as no surprise that Puerto Vallarta has a robust theater and entertainment community. We will be discussing that with Gary Beck in an upcoming show this February. So there is just so much to talk about, and as the show progresses week by week, I will be working along with friends like JR, and my buddy Agustin at The fantastic Hotel Cinco 22 B & B on Calle Hidalgo, about 3 blocks north of The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  I will be working with those great guys and others to bring you special offers from restaurants and hotels, resorts and clubs so stay tuned for that.
