This show has been pretty Oregon-centric, but I'm told there is a large landmass just north of us that also has a lot of amazing people doing environmental and climate justice work.  So I'm putting my Oregon bias aside for today to learn more about one of the most exciting and effective climate forest campaigns in the Pacific Northwest - Washington Legacy Forest Defense Campaign! To find out what a legacy forest is, and how folks are working to protect them, I'm joined by Joshua Wright with the Washington Legacy Forest Defense Coalition.  I'm also joined by Lee First with Twin Harbors Waterkeeper, to learn about the great work they do to protect Washington's coastal waterways and watersheds. Please help me out by sharing texting the link to this show to a friend or two (or sharing any other way!).  And we have a new instagram page, just in case you're into that sort of thing...Show Notes:https://twinharborswaterkeeper.org/https://www.wlfdc.org/Support the show

In this episode of Work in Progress, Joshua Wright, EVP of Growth for Lightcast, discusses The Rising Storm, the labor research group's forecast of a massive labor shortage over the next eight years and how we can fix the problem before it hurts the economy. According the Lightcast report, the workforce will face a labor shortage of six million workers between now and 2032, the largest shortage in our country's history. Wright says the it is being driven by the retirement of the baby boomer generation, declining birth rates, and reduced participation in the prime-age workforce. But, he adds, while there is no silver bullet, there are ways we can solve the problem by acting now. It comes down, Wright says, to taking a closer look at the way we educate and train people for the workforce. "I think fundamentally this is an opportunity. It is a challenge, but it's also an opportunity to restructure and rethink the systems that were developed. We're already seeing states do this, creating new workforce and education offices, or putting those two together and thinking of, 'How do we transform our education and workforce systems?'" He goes into details on those solutions for developing more workforce programs to upskill and retain existing workers. Wright says employers play a key role in this strategy, as do the education institutions and local and state governments. In the podcast, Wright also explains how technology can help speed up these solutions and he addresses the role immigration has always played, and should continue to play, in our labor force. In the fifth part of this coverage of the sexual misconduct allegations against ex-George Mason University (GMU) law professor and former FTC Commissioner Joshua Wright, Irina invites back Dilan Esper, an experienced litigator in areas that include defamation law and the First Amendment. Together, they analyze the most recent legal developments in two lawsuits that Josh has launched. The first is his defamation lawsuit against two of the women who accused Josh of misconduct--Elyse Dorsey and Angela Landry--where the judge allowed the lawsuit to proceed past a successful motion to dismiss after Josh amended his complaint. The second is a sex discrimination lawsuit where Josh is suing his former employer GMU for the way it handled his complaint, arguing that the university prematurely sided with his alleged victims because he is a man. Dilan explains to listeners why he thinks that Josh's legal actions will neither succeed in court nor help to restore his reputation, and why some of Josh's painting himself as a victim of the #metoo movement in legal filings may be motivated by his hoping to get future benefits from fellow Title IX critics. Dilan also discusses the use of defamation lawsuits generally in responding to sexual allegations, including based on his experience representing one of Bill Cosby's victims. Eleanor Goldfield hosts this week. In the first segment, a French farmer explains the complex politics behind the recent wave of mass protests by farmers, as well as the economic squeeze that government policies impose on them. Next, in a brief “intermission,” Eleanor and Mickey discuss recent failures of corporate media and consider whether old media has abandoned any hope of building a substantial audience among the generation now coming of age. We conclude by discussing legislation to expose vast tracts of southeast Alaskan forest to logging, under a pretense of returning the land to Native Alaskan authority. David Lorant is a farmer based in Rennes, northwest France. Joshua Wright is a filmmaker and forest-defense activist.   The post Why are farmers protesting in France? / Huge logging scheme disguised as land-back bill appeared first on KPFA.

Irina and Dilan focus on some of the most controversial parts of this legal document, and Dilan explains how Josh likely fails to meet the standard to get past a defendant motion to dismiss. Dilan also shows why things will probably get even worse for Josh if he does make it past such a motion, quite possibly resulting in more damaging materials and testimony appearing during the discovery process. In the third part of this coverage of the sexual misconduct allegations against ex-George Mason University law professor and former FTC Commissioner Joshua Wright, Irina speaks with a victim of judicial harassment and retaliation, attorney and activist Aliza Shatzman who founded the Legal Accountability Project. After graduating from the Washington University School of Law in 2019, Aliza began clerking for a judge in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. After subjecting her to harassment and sex discrimination, the judge fired her and then went on to derail her legal career by providing false statements during her final reference check for a prestigious position as a federal prosecutor in such a manner that she lost the position. Irina and Aliza discuss how little has changed in the twenty years between when Irina started law school--a time of shady "open secrets" at her own alma mater and in the judiciary--and today. They talk about the roots of the culture of silence and its reinforcement via tools such as defamation lawsuits, like potentially the one currently faced by two of Josh Wright's alleged victims, and what true change and principled allyship look like.SOTI ep. 39 with Prof. Christa LaserSOTI ep. 40 with Prof. Brandy WagstaffAliza Shatzman's profile Aliza Shatzman's TwitterThe Legal Accountability Project (LAP) websiteDaily Mail article about the allegations against Joshua WrightGlobal Competition Review article about GMU's reaction to the allegationsNote: According to a statement printed in the media by Lindsay McKasson, counsel to Joshua Wright at Binall Law Group "all allegations of sexual misconduct are false," "These false allegations are being made public after unsuccessfully demanding millions of dollars behind closed doors," and "We look forward to total vindication in court." Bear Medicine is the vehicle for the songs of Joshua Wright. The group originated as a quartet intent on blending the sounds of American primitive instrumental music and standard pop and Americana sounds. This iteration of the band spent a number of years playing local shows and doing small tours across the east coast all while releasing their first album “The Moon Has Been All My Life”. After this version of the band had come to its natural conclusion, Bear Medicine went on hiatus for several years in order to write new material and form a more fitting band that suited the new direction of the songs. The current lineup consists of Kim Conlee (keys, flute, vocals) Emily Woxihara (Drums, Vocals) Scott Willmuth (Bass) Sam Mcwilliams (fiddle) and Joshua Wright (Vocals, Guitar) The band reformed and started playing locally again while recording their second record “Dog is Love”. The new record focuses on a large band sound with lush harmonies and sweeping strings, but still keeps the core of the Bear Medicine Ethos: Songs of questioning, dealing with loss, and trying to understand one's place in an uncertain and seemingly ambivalent world. The newest record “Dog is Love” is available now on all streaming platforms and on vinyl.

Antitrust is making headlines, with figures as diverse as Josh Hawley and Elizabeth Warren seeking to use it as a shiny new tool to rein in big tech. But some of the policies they're pushing were tried before in the 1960s, and they ended up penalizing perfectly competitive conduct just out of animosity for “big business.” A Supreme Court dissent that paved the way for a consumer-first antitrust standard offers lessons about why we shouldn't be so eager to return to 1960s anti-trust policy and gives us some insight into why big isn't always bad. Thanks to our guests Joshua Wright, Ashley Baker, Yaron Brook, and Hannah Cox.Special thanks to Judge Douglas Ginsburg for his dramatic reading.Follow us on Twitter @anastasia_esq @ehslattery @pacificlegal #DissedPod See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode Max speaks with Joshua Wright, a front-line activist who was amongst the first involved in blockading access to Fairy Creek, trying to prevent ancient old-growth forests from being destroyed by logging companies. There have been over 1000 arrests making it one of the largest acts of civil disobedience in Canadian history. These on the ground activists continue to camp on site despite pressure from the loggers to endanger both the forest and its present inhabitants. The injunction against the protestors which ran from April until the end of September of this year was not allowed to be extended. But that decision was overturned and a new interim injunction is now in place until November 15th, so this is a crucial moment in the continuation of this blockade. https://www.facebook.com/FairyCreekBlockade We include a poem by Linda Hogan recited by Anita Stewart. UPDATE: Since recording this interview yesterday, June 3rd, 2021, the RCMP (Canadian police force) breached the Waterfall Gate, a critical location for preventing the logging and road blasting equipment from moving further up towards the headwaters in Fairy Creek. We are publishing this without knowing what could happen next. Ten RCMP got past the gate in plain clothes, dressed as backpackers… almost unbelievable that they would go to these lengths to cut the last old growth trees in the island. Every single person who shows up to camp, donates to the gofundme, makes calls, sends emails, and gets involved in what's happening is contributing to protecting these trees. Show Notes: Fairy Creek is the last high-production old growth forest in in Pacheedaht First Nations territory, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. 10-15 feet thick, well over a thousand years old, these trees are the treasures of Vancouver Island's lush rainforests; only 2% remain standing, and if the saws keep running, it's a matter of a few years until they are completely gone. My guests today, Carole Tootill and Joshua Wright have been instrumental to what has become one of the longest protests in history, the Fairy Creek blockade. 300 days of direct action, 160+ arrests, and thousands of supporters (now almost 50k followers on IG in less than 10 months)… There are always two sides of an argument, multiple perspectives to consider and stakeholders to appease. All the forest defenders are asking for is a civil, open discussion. A recent poll in B.C. reported 92% of people disapprove of logging old growth. It is not necessary to cut old growth, but "they do it because they can." - Carole "As long as there are human beings on this planet, there will be a demand for wood, pulp, and other forest resources, and there will be businesses that endeavor to meet that demand. Furthermore, those people who live and work in forests will always need to feed their families and put a roof over their heads; the stark inequities in our global economy increase the economic desperation that fuels illegal logging and poaching. The only realistic way to conserve our forests is to apply sustainable forest management practices—a conservation-and-livelihoods approach that the Rainforest Alliance has led since the late 1980s, and one that's already proven successful on nearly half a billion acres of land around the world." As Elder Bill Jones said, “We now must give a gesture to our Great Mother by saying no. The whole world is being run on a colonist extraction economy and it's at the end of its “sucking” I call it. There are no resources left. I think we are trying to save the last remnants of our own sensitivities. Once the old growth is gone, there is no connection to our historic past.” Links: Fairy Creek Blockade on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/fairycreekblockade/?hl=en Rainforest Flying Squad Links: https://linktr.ee/TheRainforestFlyingSquad GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/2b337bc5 May 30, 2021 Article: https://www.saanichnews.com/news/solidarity-for-indigenous-claims-over-tree-forest-lot-46-builds/ To contact Kyle, visit kylehuber.com or https://www.instagram.com/adventure_creator

America's adoption of the consumer welfare standard since the late 1970s has led to the rise of innovative Big Tech companies like Google and Amazon. Other countries, particularly in Europe, would love to have massively successful tech firms of their own, but they're constrained in part by their more restrictive antitrust doctrines. And yet, many conservatives have begun to sound like progressives on this topic, rejecting a more laissez-faire approach to antitrust out of concern that these tech companies have acquired too much power. So today's episode explores the current state of US antitrust doctrine, as well as the resurgence of calls to reform it, with Joshua Wright. Josh is a law professor at George Mason University, as well as the executive director of the Global Antitrust Institute and a former member of the Federal Trade Commission. He is the co-author, along with Jan Rybnicek, of the recent National Affairs article, “https://nationalaffairs.com/time-choosing-conservative-case-against-weaponizing-antitrust (A Time for Choosing: The Conservative Case Against Weaponizing Antitrust).”
