A councillor embroiled in a row over who'll wear the Cathaoirleach's chains in East Clare over the next few months has dismissed the episode as a "political spat". Sparks flew at yesterday's meeting of Killaloe Municipal District when Fine Gael's Pat Burke contested the decision allowing the Leas Cathaoirleach, Fianna Fáil's Pat Hayes, to ascend to the vacant top position. Arguably Clare's most harmonious municipal district became a battleground this week as the subject of which councillor will replace newly-elected Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney as Cathaoirleach dominated early discussions. Prior to his election to Dáil Éireann in November, Deputy Cooney had been the appointed Cathaoirleach of Killaloe Municipal District for the 2024/25 Clare County Council term, with Maghera Councillor Pat Hayes serving as Leas Cathaoirleach. Following O'Callaghan's Mills native Conor Ryan's co-option onto the municipal district in December, the newcomer quickly indicated his lack of interest in taking the reins just set. Yesterday, it was proposed that Councillor Hayes would step up from his position as vice-chair to be at the helm of the MD until June, with Fianna Fáil councillors Tony O'Brien and Alan O'Callaghan backing the plan. The development led Whitegate Councillor Pat Burke to accuse the Fianna Fáil contingent of "railroading" their Fine Gael counterparts and refusing to engage with him on the subject. He claims it's not unthinkable that the three Fianna Fáil councillors have a "plan up their sleeve" to ensure Councillor Ryan never has the opportunity to be Cathaoirelach in this term. With four years left in this council term, it's not yet clear if Councillor Hayes will serve a full year as Cathaoirleach at another stage or if Councillor Ryan will wear the chains for half of that year in order to ensure both representatives do a full stint. Councillor Hayes believes a "flare-up" is healthy every once in a while and doesn't envisage that the issue will be a cause of friction going forward.

An East Clare councillor says he's 'certain' the renewal of a walking trail in Mountshannon will attract more visitors to the locality. In a motion at this weeks Killaloe Municipal District, the local authority was called on to engage with Coillte to set in motion the process of renewing Woodpark Forest Park in Mountshannon. Criticisms have been made of Ireland's semi-state forestry company, Coillte, for not continuously maintaining the park. However, a funding application has been sent, with an update expected in early 2025. Whitegate Fine Gael Councillor, Pat Burke, claims that in tandem with the Inis Cealtra Visitor Centre, a renovated Woodpark Forest would bring increased footfall to the locality.

How is the Tower of Terror connected to Disneyland Paris's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad? In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we continue our exploration of the "crown jewel" of all the Big Thunder Mountain Railroads, the one in Disneyland Paris. After a brief discussion of concept and construction, we check out all of Pat Burke's amazing antiques in the queue, including a few with some surprising stories. From a coveted piece of rare machinery to a tribute to one of WED's great model makers, this queue was meant to be the pinnacle of all the versions of Big Thunder. After waxing nostalgic about stamp mills and woodstoves, we continue down to the loading dock where Kirk is delighted by a particular prop. Kate gets embarrassed by an accidental turn of phrase, Kirk makes fun of how she says pan, and we laugh way too much as we near the finale of our Big Thunder Mountain series. talks to Tom Hanley, Jim Collins and David Fleming As broadcast live during SBCR and RCB Simulcast at the Local Election Count 2024 in the West County Hotel 8th June 2024
There were contrasting pictures in the counts for the Shannon and Killaloe Local Electoral Areas over the weekend. South-east Clare has seen a considerable shake-up with familiar faces departing and new ones being ushered in while in East Clare, continuity was the word on everyone's lips. A very different-looking Shannon Municipal District will be representing the region over the next five years as a result of how its electorate voted on Friday. It was certain that at least two new faces would be elected there following the retirements of Councillors Pat "Mace" McMahon and Gerry Flynn. Although Pat "Mace" won't be on the scene, Newmarket-on-Fergus residents can rest easy that they'll have a representative for the foreseeable future. First-time candidate David Griffin caused a massive upset by securing over 1,500 first preference votes, thus electing him on the first count. The 28-year-old Fianna Fáil councillor-to-be says he couldn't possibly have predicted such a positive reaction on his first time out. It was a day for young candidates in the Shannon area as 22-year-old Rachel Hartigan, also of Fianna Fáil, was the third to be elected in the region. The Ardnacrusha native insists giving young people a voice is something she's particularly passionate about. While it was all smiles for many party candidates, Independent candidates didn't fare as well as anticipated. The number of Independents on Clare County Council has shrunk from five to two and long-time Sixmilebridge Councillor PJ Ryan was one of those to lose his seat. Clonlara Independent Councillor Michael Begley did manage to hold onto his, while Fine Gael's John Crowe and Fianna Fáil's Pat O'Gorman also secured their re-election, and former Fine Gael senator Tony Mulcahy has successfully returned to local politics. On his elimination, PJ Ryan claims you can't always trust what you hear while canvassing. There was considerably less drama in the counts for the east of the county, as bookies' favourite Joe Cooney topped the poll with 2,819 first-preference votes. The Bodyke Fine Gael councillor and current Mayor of Clare insists consistently engaging with the electorate remains the name of the game. Incumbents Alan O'Callaghan and Tony O'Brien of Fianna Fáil, as well as Pat Burke of Fine Gael, filled the remaining seats with ease in the Killaloe local electoral area. Despite national polls and predictions to the contrary, Fianna Fáil was far-and-away the most successful in Clare over the weekend. The party saw 14 of its candidates elected, meaning it now makes up half of Clare County Council, however it's just one shy of gaining a majority. Maghera Councillor Pat Hayes, who sailed across the finish line in the second count, believes the public still value the work that the party's representatives carry out on a daily basis.
Is Tokyo Disneyland's Big Thunder really just a copy of the U.S. Disney parks? On this episode of Distory, we head overseas to the wilds of Westernland in Tokyo Disneyland to attempt to dig up some history of Disney's third iteration of Big Thunder Mountain. Along the way, we briefly discuss how this park came to be, find some new mining equipment we haven't seen before (and some we have), get excited about a foos engine and Pelton wheel, and debate way too long about possible tram buckets on blueprints. We hear from Pat Burke about how Big Thunder brought him closer to Michael Jackson, Kirk struggles to pronounce various geological names, and we hear an oration of a patent for a tool you'll never see the same again. Kate waters some borax mules, Kirk finds a monocled robot, and all our detailed research makes us pause right before loading onto the Big Thunder trains, which means we'll have to hop aboard the actual ride on our next episode. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/disneycicerone/support

A Kent pensioner claims a 'do not resuscitate' order was signed by doctors at the QEQM hospital in Margate - without his permission. Pat Burke had a seizure while visiting the hospital for a routine appointment. He was taken to a ward to be monitored and his wife found the note the following day. Hear from Pat and the response from the hospital. More than 30 people from Kent have been recognised in the King's first New year honours list. Among them is Paula Hudgell who campaigned for tougher sentences for child abusers. And, Ish has been chatting to April Jane Homer from Snodland who got a British Empire Medal. There are concerns ripping up the cobbles on Ashford's Lower High Street will lead to a drop in footfall and business. A £600,000 programme will see the uneven pavements replaced with black tarmac. Hear from a trader and a local councillor. And, a Rochester man says he plans to immediately retire after winning £500,000 on the national lottery. We've been catching up with Len Parsons and his wife Hazel. In sport, it's been a disappointing start to the new year for Gillingham. An East Clare Councillor is hopeful the Holy Island visitor centre could be open before the end of next summer. Newly announced rural regeneration funding will see nearly €7.5m shared between two key projects in Clare, with almost €4 million set aside to develop the tourist centre in Mountshannon and over 3.5m allocated to the Kilrush Maritime Training Centre. Clare County Council will also pledge €1m toward the Mountshannon venture and €700,000 to the West Clare project. Fine Gael Councillor from Whitegate, Pat Burke has been telling Clare FM's Rebecca O'Sullivan that this funding is a major step towards boosting tourism in East Clare.

Episode Summary: Today, we speak with electrical automation and programming specialist Pat Burke. He is the owner of Poolin' Around, LLC, which offers pool and spa mechanical services in the Phoenix Metro Area. We kick off the conversation discussing Pat's first love before he got into the world of pools: BMX racing and, funnily enough, pool riding (which actually became the inspiration behind the name of his future company, Poolin' Around). Pat started cleaning pools in Tucson at the age of 19 and kept at it for a number of years before boredom eventually nudged him into the technical side of the pool industry. The rest of our conversation centers around Pat's expertise in electrical automation and programming, particularly when it comes to repairing heaters. He goes into common heater-related issues and what he looks for in and around the pool when commissioned to install a heater for the first time. Finally, Pat talks about best practices when pricing your services, his go-to resources for pool education, and his tips for organizing your tools and equipment as a technician. Topics Discussed: 01:52 - How Pat got into BMX and pools 15:42 - Transitioning to servicing pools 18:29 - Pat's life cleaning pools at 19 25:59 - Creating new income streams 28:41 - Moving on to gaining technical expertise 32:56 - How Pat's education evolved over the years 37:09 - Troubleshooting a heater 39:25 - Pat's recent noteworthy heater repair 42:11 - Common heater-related issues 50:22 - How to price your services for efficiency 52:17 - What to look for when installing a heater 57:35 - The best resources for pool education 1:03:35 - How to organize your tools and equipment Sponsors: Skimmer Primate Pool Tools Leslie's Connect with Guest: Website Poolin Around Instagram Pat Burke Instagram Connect with Pool Chasers: Website Instagram Facebook Facebook Group Twitter YouTube Patreon Key Quotes from Episode: Pool service is difficult right now, for sure. But it's just the revenue stream. Once you've got the revenue stream going, your expenses are paid for, and you can then tackle the projects where you can make more money. But I think pool services in the valley in general are due for a double. Service is just the rapport. The work, whatever it may be, is where you make the profit.

Pat Burke is a 6x CrossFit Games competitor and a gym-owner that lived and breathed fitness for over a decade. For years, they were daily workout partners and as sponsored athletes prepared to throw down on CrossFit's biggest stage. Their friendship consisted of heavy weightlifting, high-skill gymnastics like handstand walking, legless rope climbs, and even swimming in lakes in Colorado. But this conversation about FAITH and how much Pat has gotten back to his roots over the last year was the first of its kind. They dive deep into how he started bringing his family to church recently, how his worldview has changed and what it looks like to let go of control and simply trust the process as he starts reading the Bible. This is an episode full of reminiscing, story-telling and a God-honoring shift of perspective. IG: @prburke

In this edition of the MVP Cast, we talk to Pat Burke about the significance of being the first and only Irishman to make the NBA, the difference with even the biggest clubs in European basketball and his journey between the two sides of the Atlantic, the power dynamic between stars like Michael Jordan and the role players on their teams, the curious disappointment of being part of the Phoenix Suns' Seven Seconds or Less squad and the mentality of NBAers as the league plots an abnormal return to action. Sponsored by Total Environmental Compliance – check them out at tecompliance.co.uk.
I interview the only ever Irish born basketball player to play in the NBA. Pat Burke was born in Offaly and when he was 3 his family moved to Ohio. From never having played basketball until he was 16 to playing in the NBA for 3 seasons and a very successful European career, Pats career has been fascinating. He has played with some all time greats such as Tracy McGrady. Horrace Grant and Steve Nash. He also played against Michael Jordan. This is a long one but it will fly by as Pat chats about his amazing career. Enjoy!
Who better to start the series than the only Irish born player ever to play in the NBA - Pat Burke. Pat Burke's life in basketball is one of the untold stories of the game. He wasn't raised to play. He didn't discover the game until he hit a massive growth spurt at 16. He didn't fall in love with it immediately but when his family moved to Florida, the planets aligned and he met the right coach who set him on the path to playing for clubs like Panathinaikos, Real Madrid and of course the Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns. Pat Burke has seen every angle of the game from playing college ball at Auburn, tasting the bitter disappointment of going undrafted, going the unconventional route to the pros, winning at the highest level of Eurobasket, defending MJ, and establishing his own hoops academy after his playing days ended. This is an Irish basketball hall of famer who can give an insight into life inside basketball like nobody else. Hello and what's up, skaters! What we've got here is another episode of Vent City, where we talk skateboarding and some other bullshit. On this show we've got Kristin Ebeling, Alex White, Ted Schmitz and Ryan Lay, who are all also skaters. We talk about what's good in skateboarding like Pat Burke and Danny Dicola being awesome skaters in the Slave video, Radio Silence. Also Ryan Lay likes the Cafe video, Sonata, which you can find a link to right after this sentence is over. https://www.freeskatemag.com/2019/12/12/cafe/ Ryan also skated a demo for Bernie Sanders and Skate After School, along with Cowtown skateboards, gave out hundreds of skateboards to kids in AZ! Kristin and Skate Like A Girl delivered skateboards for Christmas to kids around Seattle with help from both 35th shops and we can all agree that's what's good. She also helped premiere the videos for Scene Attack in Seattle which is a sick street video contest that we might have a link to after I text Northwest people to get the link since googling "scene attack seattle" has delivered some truly horrifying results that aren't skate related at fucking all. Alex White is digging Maité Steenhoudt's eponymous part by Element and we have a nice little discussion talking about different parts of the video we liked that are all good and just reasons to get hyped on it. Oh, you want a link? Shit, you already saw it cause it was like three weeks ago? Well, fuck you, here's the link anyway so you watch it again, goddamnit! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpFRepAzKJ0&feature=youtu.be Also, who knew that Element had a Youtube channel? After the good stuff we get into more good stuff by talking about Women's Battle at the Berrics where both Alex and Kristin handled some business refereeing and broadcasting the action. After that contest discussion we get into a deeper talk about women's contests more broadly and whether or not all contests should be done away with. The answer to that question is in the show but if you're reading this, I'll just tell you: most of us are fine with contests existing except Ryan Lay who just wants pros to be out in the streets and in the community skating together. Then we get into our usual Funeral Pyre segment where we say farewell and goodbye to things in skating that no longer giving us any functional value. I, Ted, think that the front blunt with a crail grab shouldn't be performed anymore and also that it should definitely never be written or spoken of because the name it was given is just kinda ew. Ryan says something about contests and we just end up throwing him on the pyre instead. Goodbye, old friend, you are an amazing skater and dude but you don't know what should be skating worthy of the story and what is for the feed. Kristin throws being a "cool guy" onto the gorgeous pillar of flaming corpses. Just, like, say what's up to people and be mellow about it when you see familiar faces at the park. And especially don't purposely ignore people. That's super weird. Alex says teen pregnancy is quite passé so let's drop it. Also, we back planned parenthood where you can get lots of reproductive health services and access to contraceptives! Want a link to that as well? What's that? You know how Google works? Well, fuck you again, here it is! https://www.plannedparenthood.org/ And that's it for the shows main product. Music by Ilana Bryne (@ilana.bryne or naivetrax.bandcamp.com) Logo and Graphic Design by Michael Worful (@worful) Also check out this cool shit he designed for Skate After School and Pyramid Country https://www.pyramidcountry.com/product/pyramid-country-x-skate-after-school-tee-white After you see all that, feel free to listen to a truly cringey jam I made for our Pro Flow members who give to our patreon! And yeah, I'm gonna link it. https://www.patreon.com/ventcity Sincerely though, we thank each an every one of you for listening. We love you a lot.

Patrick Burke on the toughest thing he ever had to do in his career ~ "Tell somebody that their child or their husband or wife or a loved one wasn't coming home because of a traffic fatality. And that's 100% preventable. It still is, these incidents, and there's so much more we can continue to do to make sure that people aren't drunk driving or paying attention to what they're doing on the roads." Patrick Burke - Executive Director Washington DC Police Foundation and host Andy Ockershausen during in-studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town. I'm so, so, so happy for a lot of reasons to welcome a very important man in the city of Washington and Our Town, a public servant. I mean, he has been in the police department or connected with it for 27 years on the force. But even since he left the force he's been still in law enforcement. He's just a terrific guy, an important part of Our Town, and a member of the ... He was [sic] the Executive Director at the Washington DC Police Foundation. Pat Burke, welcome to Our Town. Patrick Burke: Thanks, Andy. Good to be here. Andy Ockershausen: You have been amazing to me in all the things I've seen you do over the years. I remember you in uniform, I remember when you started wearing neckties like the rest of us. Now, none of us wear ties anymore, Pat. Isn't that great? Patrick Burke: It is great. It's nice to not have to worry about that every day. Andy Ockershausen: But you always dressed like $1 million, and you had that clean white shirt. and I wouldn't say this unless she was here. I would have loved to have Cathy Lanier. I know you worked close with Cathy. She was such a big, important part of Our Town because of what she did. Patrick Burke: And she's back in town pretty regularly. Her mom still lives out in Maryland, so ... Andy Ockershausen: She had a house in Maryland, I know. Patrick Burke: She still does, so she's still back in town pretty regularly, and she'll actually be at an event in December back in DC. So glad to hear she's doing well with the NFL, and we're glad to have Chief Newsham here, as well. Andy Ockershausen: Well, Cherrie Doggett is having a cocktail Christmas party, and I'm sure she's invited. Cathy was always there, and we got to know her through Bud, as we got to know the police department. But Pat, you're a New Yorker. Not from Buffalo, but from Rochester. Patrick Burke Hails from Rochester, New York Patrick Burke: As I tell my wife, who's from New York, New York I'm from the real part of New York, Western New York. And most of my family is still Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse. But I have to say, as much as I love them, there's six inches of snow right now in Rochester, and I'll see my mom and dad in the spring. Andy Ockershausen: Yeah, but it'll be gone by July. Patrick Burke: By usually March. I remember Lake Ontario was frozen through St. Patrick's day. Andy Ockershausen: Yeah, they close the lakes off, and everything up there was frozen. But Pat, how did you end up in the police department? You went to school in New York in the State University of New York? In 1989, Burke Chose DC Police Department over Law School Patrick Burke: Yep, I did my undergrad at University of Buffalo, started grad school up there, actually came down to look at American University in DC, law school, and one of my good buddies was working vice for the second district. They said, "Pat, save money. Join the PD." It was the height of the crack epidemic in 1989, so he said, "Come on down and save some money." So I joined the police department. I fell in love with it, and 27 years later I woke up and I had a great career, and my last nine as Assistant Chief. Andy Ockershausen: Well, it's not over. You've still got a great career. But what you're doing is great for the police department and great for Washington PD, but your wife, you say from the other New York, she's a New Yorker? A Long Islander?

Our guest is nothing if not passionate about the sport he has made his career. As the only Irish born NBA ever he shares the story of how he came to play basketball after an initial love of hockey. A 7 inch growth spurt somewhat ruined that dream as did the powerful, and negative, words of his first high school coach. Things would change as his family would move to a new state, playing for a new coach. Hard work and a journeyman's attitude would pay off in college and playing overseas and he shares an unlikely story of running in to some ex teammates who didn't believe he was a starting center in the NBA. A great storyteller, our guest shares some amazing stories from his career as well as what his legacy might be leading young athletes today. Plug those earphones in and go for a shoot around for today's first NBA athlete on the Athlete On Fire show!
