There are so many resources online available to help newbies learn how to design, architect, code, and deploy software projects. But with this large repository of knowledge, we can be overloaded and overwhelmed with information. Where does one even start? Daniel Leskosky, a petroleum engineer turned industrial engineer turned software engineer, was able to figure it out. After taking a few CS courses on the side, reaching out to hundreds of software developers on LinkedIn, and getting active on "tech twitter," he paved the way from not being able to do a single Leetcode problem to cranking them out daily through the #100DaysOfCode challenge. We discuss cold-calling on LinkedIn, taking online courses, building and deploying his own blog site from scratch, developing GitHub portfolios, and also strategies for practicing algorithms from different sources.
There's SO much conflicting advice out there around how to best and accurately represent your skills and projects as a junior developer. I brought on an old boss of mine who lost count of the number of resumes he's reviewed and software engineers that he's hired. Needless to say, he's been in the game for a while. I can attest that Scott has always looked out for software engineers that have crossed his path, but he's also very honest. Without knowing his views around the topic before I invited him on, because of his honesty, I thought he'd be a great hiring manager to answer questions about how to best represent yourself as an aspiring software engineer. Every time you go up you're inevitably going to hit more challenging problems which takes a lot of mindset.Today we talk about 3 occasions where we entered new levels, met new devils and how we dealt with it:1. Getting our first coding role:How you have to dive straight in.Step back a bit, setting expectations with the team (see also episode #021).Try to gain a quick win to boost your confidence.2. Working out:To make gains lift heavier which takes mindset (as well as the discipline of going to the gym every single day).However be nice for yourself, adjust to your situation (80% on a bad day is better than nothing).3. PyBites / getting out there:We wrote last week that every developer needs to build up their body of content.We started doing this with our blog and doing the #100DaysOfCode challenge, then building courses / our platform and ultimately becoming coaches.Every step there were new problems and things we needed to learn (and it never stops).Lot of fear, imposter syndrome we had to conquer along the way.For example getting over hearing your own recorded voice, getting on camera, these are now new "normals" which we could not foresee when we started.So the main takeaway: look for new levels, take things head-on, remember that the pain is temporary and you'll look back realizing there was not that much magic. I did some bug fixes and freeCodeCamp challenges today. The challenges are nice to keep me learning new tricks, and to help me confirm that I can do coding.
Did FreeCodeCamp challenges and some other challenges this evening. Some success, and some of the more difficult challenges will require some work yet.
Starting a simple workflow engine with html redirects. Using jQuery and Javascript.
Finished my work with KendoUI for jQuery. Thinking about how I could do the work better if I were to refactor it.
Working with KendoUI to find a work-around for something that the vendor won't be able to deliver in time for the migration.
It's nice to be able to sit down to code peacefully for an hour and just let the day end quietly. Working on a Blade this evening and enjoying how well-formed functions allow for easy reuse.

Oscar Clark is consultant specializing in project-based Executive Production. A pioneer in social games services since 1998, he was Vision Lead for British Telecom’s Wireplay, one of the first online games communities, Global Lead for Digital Games at Hutchison Whampoa (3UK) and Home Architect for PlayStation®Home. He has an obsession with understanding the juxtaposition of game design, monetisation and social engagement and how to apply that to give games projects the best chance in the market whether that is PC, Console, or Online but particularly on Mobile. His ability to digest and communicate led to him becoming an Evangelist for Papaya Mobile, Applifier and Unity Technologies; and he has become one of the most connected people in games. As a consultant he looks at game design, monetization, business modelling, and social design. His first book, “Games As A Service – How Free To Play Design Can Make Better Games” was published by Focal Press and he is a contributing author for the “Mobile Developer’s Guide To The Galaxy” published by www.enough.de. Creating a website is no longer a simple and perhaps fun task. Or at least it isn't as fun or easy as it used to be. A developer has to invest time and effort in the environment and tooling that is used, instead of concentrating on the code and the creation process. A frontend developer needs to learn command line skills in order to install frontend dependencies. Not all frontend developers want to learn backend tools. Creative and open spaces that breed developers and designers are now lost to history. Online creativity is now boxed into tightly defined social containers such as Facebook or Twitter. These have replaced the MySpace's of the world. The default building requirements of a website has grown tremendously in the last few years. Want a HTML form? - You need HTTPS Want a to rank in Google? - You need mobile first Want to be legal? - You need to be GDPR compliant The deployment of a website used to be as simple as dragging files from one folder and placing them into another folder A tribal like attitude is often observed when dealing with CSS and JavaScript frameworks. You are either a developer who writes code in X or Y. Alex Kallaway was working as a full-time developer, but it wasn’t enough. He wanted a way to try new technologies and grow his coding skills outside of work. So he created #100DaysofCode, the hashtag-based challenge that’s helped him incorporate coding into his daily routine. He talks about how he designed the challenge, the number of people who’ve joined him, and the updates he’s making for 2017.
