Send us a textWhat does the FDA jurisdiction for LDTs mean for the labs? Do they need to worry? How do they need to change the way they operate? In this episode, I talk with Dr. Thomas Nifong, a clinical pathologist and VP of CDX operations at Acrovan Therapeutics, about the recent FDA ruling on laboratory-developed tests (LDTs) issued on May 6th, 2024. We discuss the implications of considering LDTs as medical devices, requiring regulation, and explore the authority of FDA versus CLIA. The conversation also covers historical contexts, practical implications of regulatory changes, and the roles of organizations like CAP, ACLA, and AMP in legal challenges against the FDA. We dive into the differences in requirements between CLIA and FDA, New York's alternative approval route, and potential impacts on lab operations and compliance. It's Asian Heritage Month in Canada – and this month, we're very excited to bring you a two-part discussion on the history of Asian labour in Canada. This week's episode is a continuation from last week's conversation in which rabble labour reporter Kiah Lucero, and Patricia Chong and Karine Ng from the Ontario and BC branches of the Asian Canadian Labour Alliance discussed the history of the Alliance; key moments of Asian labour in Canada; and how racism, systemic discrimination, and “othering” still shows up in Canada today. Today, we continue that discussion and dig into the concept of a “model minority,” what it means to be an immigrant on stolen land, and how all racial justice fights are intertwined. About our guests The Asian Canadian Labour Alliance (ACLA) is a national organization that represents the voice of Asian Canadian trade union members, Asian Canadian workers and the Asian community at large. Through educational events, organizing and strike support, the ACLA hopes to establish a wide network of labour and community activists in Canada. Patricia Chong holds a MA in Labour Studies from McMaster University and a Masters in Labour Policies and Globalisation from the Global Labour University (Germany). She is a short documentary film maker and a member of the Asian Canadian Labour Alliance Ontario Chapter. She has worked as an organizer for both public and private sector unions and has successfully unionized workers in Ontario, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and the Yukon. 吳珏穎 Karine Ng (she/her) is an immigrant-settler on Turtle Island, a spore blown across the Pacific from then British colonized Hong Kong, with ancestral roots in what is known today as China. Her work is anchored in education, spanning across diverse ages and socio-cultural settings in the ancestral lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and the Tseil-Waututh people and elsewhere. Is féidir dul siar anois ar bhóithrín na staire i mbailiúchán speisialta de litreacha lámhscríofa ó imircigh Éireannacha thar tréimhse 400 bliain, bailiúchán atá ar fáil ar líne in áis dar teideal Imirce, trí mhíorúilt na teicneolaíochta úire agus tríd scil agus díograis na mbailitheoirí. Agus tá siad ag lorg tuilleadh litreacha – go háirithe, litreacha as Gaeilge! Tá an tOllamh Breandán Mac Suibhne linn leis an scéal a mhíniú. Fosta, is iarscoláire Ghaelscoil Éadain Mhóir i nDoire í an stiúrthóir agus scríbhneoir óg, Róise Nic an Bheatha, a bhfuil a gearrscannán úr Le Chéile/Ri Chèile, i nGaeilge agus Gaeilge na hAlban, ag gnóthú spotaí i bhféilte scannán ó Toronto go hOileán Acla. Labhraíonn sí linn ó Albain, áit a bhfuil sí lonnaithe anois.A journey back in time, via a fascinating collection of handwritten letters from Irish immigrants over a period of 400 years, can now be enjoyed in an online resource named Imirce, made possible by the miracles of modern technology married with the skill and hard work of the collectors. And they are looking for more letters – especially letters in Irish! Professor Breandán Mac Suibhne joins us to explain the story. Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an 28 Deireadh Fómhair. Is mise Gráinne Ní Bhrosnacháin.Beidh cluiche ceannais Chorn an Domhain sa Rugbaí ar siúl Dé Sathairn i Stade de France i bPáras, agus an Afraic Theas ag imirt i gcoinne na Nua-Shéalainne. Thug an Afraic Theas na cosa leo agus iad ag buachan ar Shasana le pointe amháin ag an gcluiche ceathrú ceannais agus bhuaigh an Nua-Shéalainn go bog ar an Airgintín. Beidh an dhá fhoireann ag iarraidh Corn Webb Ellis a bhuachan don cheathrú uair. Don Afraic Theas, is é seo an ceathrú uair dóibh áit sa Chluiche Ceannais a bhaint amach agus an cúigiú uair don Nua-Shéalainn. Baineadh cor coise astu i rith an chomórtais nuair a chaill an Nua-Shéalainn i gcoinne na Fraince agus chaill an Afraic Theas i gcoinne Éireann ach thángadar chucu féin go láidir arís. Leis an gcogadh ag tarlú sa Mheánoirthear idir Iosrael agus Hamas, dhein arm Iosrael an darna ruathar isteach go Gaza. Deirtear go bhfuil arm Iosrael ag ullmhú chun ionradh a dhéanamh ar réigiún atá faoi riail Hamas. Bhuail saighdiúirí coise agus aonaid innealtóireachta targaidí thar oíche in oirthear na cathrach. Deir údaráis Gaza go bhfuil os cionn 7,300 duine tar éis bás a fháil ó thosaigh an cogadh. Deir rialtas Iosrael gur maraíodh níos mó ná 1400 duine nuair a dhein Hamas ionsaí gan choinne ar Iosrael agus iad ag marú sibhialtach cóngarach don teorainn. Ceaptar go bhfuil 224 Iosraelach á choimeád i ngéibheann istigh in Gaza. Theith os cionn milliún Palaistíneach go dtí deisceart an stráice faoi ordú arm Iosrael. Agus na daoine sin atá sáinnithe i réigiún atá measartha beag tá eagla ann go mbeidh géarchéim dhaonnúil ann mar níl aon leictreachas nó uisce reatha ar fáil agus tá an bia ídithe i gcaitheamh na n-uaireanta. Tharla rud neamhghnách in Uisceadán Acla i gContae Maigh Eo. Bhí gliomach ailbíneach neamhchoitianta a d'athraigh ó bhán go gorm. Tá cónaí ar an ngliomach san uisceadán ó fuarthas é amach ón gcósta sé bliana ó shin. Tá cáil ar an ngliomach le turasóirí ag teacht chun féachaint air. Ainmníodh é Charlie i ndiaidh an iascaire Charlie O'Malley a rug air amuigh ó chósta Acla sa bhliain 2017. Le ceithre bliana anuas tá dath gorm ag teacht air. Ní mhaireann gliomaigh ailbíneacha ach idir trí agus cúig bliana mar feiceann creachadóirí go héasca iad. Deir Kevin Garvin a oibríonn san Uisceadán go raibh Charlie ina ghliomach fásta nuair a rugadh air agus mar sin bheadh sé ceithre bliana d'aois anois. De réir mar atá sé ag fás, gach 12 go 14 mí, cuireann sé a bhlaosc. Ansin tagann dath gorm níos láidre air. Dúirt tréidlianna a tháinig ar chuairt chun féachaint air go bhfuil sé an-neamhghnách go dtarlaíonn sé seo do ghliomach ailbíneach. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. Tá an script ar fáil i d'aip phodchraolta. * GLUAIS thug siad na cosa leo - they weathered the storm cor coise - setback ionradh - invasion géarchéim dhaonnúil - humanitarian crisis gliomach ailbíneach - albino lobster uisceadán - aquarium

This episode of High Theory is based upon a conference paper Saronik and Kim wrote for the American Comparative Literature Association Conference in 2023. It departs from our usual conversational style, in that we take turns reading sections of the paper aloud. But we could all do with a dose of formality, right? The paper we read is titled, “How Will Critique Save the World?: Popular Theory and Public Humanities” and it talks about the method wars on Twitter, the cameo appearance of Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation in The Matrix, alt-right conspiracy theory, and the academic job market.
In the third episode of the Courage My Friends podcast, Series III, Dania Majid, director of the Tenant Duty Council Program at the Advocacy Center for Tenants Ontario (ACTO); John Ecker, director of Research and Evaluation at the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness; and Haydar Shouly, senior manager of Shelters and Shelter Programs with Dixon Hall discuss the current crisis of housing insecurity and homelessness facing our most vulnerable communities. Ecker describes some of the ingredients of the housing crisis: “In Toronto we're seeing an emergency shelter system that's stretched to the limit, which is turning people away because there aren't enough beds available. ..We're seeing a significant increase in the number of people experiencing chronic homelessness or homelessness lasting six months or longer in Toronto…About half of people accessing emergency shelters can be defined as chronically homeless. We're also seeing a burnt out workforce that is leaving the homeless system for other opportunities. We're seeing a social housing wait-list that continues to grow due to the lack of housing stock that is being created. Rising rental costs, which is even pushing people out of not just the housing market, but the rental market as well. There's a lack of rental control measures put in place by the provincial government, allowing landlords to increase rent without that typical government oversight on units that were built after 2018.” Reflecting on how the pandemic impacted Toronto shelters, Shouly recalls: “So I remember early 2020, probably February, March 2020 when we started to feel the heat of this pandemic. We had 91 people at Heyworth House, a hundred people at 351 Lake Shore. And we were talking about 2 to 3 feet apart. And that was just not feasible anymore. It was a disaster to keep people in that kind of environment. So collectively as a sector, and the city obviously led that, we moved clients from the traditional shelters and respites to hotels. The city secured a number of hotels to create that kind of social distancing that we were talking about in early 2020. It was really difficult. It was complicated to try to make that move. To transport people to a hotel. And trying to use the city's transport vehicles or taxis... It was a really challenging kind of reality. But with that action, I think we managed to keep the numbers of positive cases low and we managed to create social distancing in those programs. But I think moving people from where they were in congregate settings into more isolated rooms in hotel programs, we actually created new sets of challenges..” Speaking to the financialization of the housing market, Majid says, “Companies like Blackstone, and they're definitely not the only one, they do see housing as an investment vehicle, and that's their primary lens on housing. So what we've seen these types of companies doing is what I call "home hoardership"; they are just accumulating homes just for the sake of accumulating these homes. It deprives people like first time home-owners and renters from accessing these homes. And it's driving the cost of the housing up. What we're seeing in Canada has been happening in the United States for a lot longer and it's a little bit more terrifying when you start putting the pieces together and it's technically already here. About today's guests: Dania Majid is a staff lawyer and director of the Tenant Duty Counsel Program at the Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario, a legal aid clinic in Ontario. Prior to joining ACTO, Dania was a legal analyst with the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, and a lawyer with the Human Rights Legal Support Centre and Neighbourhood Legal Services. She is also the founder and executive member of the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association and the Toronto Palestine Film Festival and sits on the steering committee of the Hearing Palestine program at the University of Toronto. Dania is also the lead author of ACLA's 2022 report “Anti-Palestinian Racism: Naming, Framing and Manifestations.” John Ecker, PhD is the Director of Research and Evaluation at the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness. In this role, he has been fortunate to collaborate with a number of community partners on their research and evaluation activities. He attained his Ph.D. in Community Psychology from the University of Ottawa where he received advanced training in qualitative and quantitative analyses, as well as program evaluation theory and practice. His research interests are varied and include homelessness, housing, Housing First, community integration, and LGBTQ2S studies. In his spare time, John is an avid tennis player/fan and has a love of pop culture. Haydar Shouly, is Senior Manager of Shelters and Shelter Programs with Dixon Hall in Toronto. Haydar spent more than 18 years in the Community Development, Housing & Homelessness sector with stints in Youth Homelessness Supports, Housing Advocacy, Food Security and Newcomer Settlement sectors. Most recently, he has been working and advocating to enhance the well-being of marginalized and vulnerable populations in our community. In the past 14 years, Haydar's work at Dixon Hall has been focussed on building strategic responses to homelessness in the City of Toronto, primarily in partnership with the Shelter, Support and Housing Administration (SSHA) Division. Today we have an International Women's Day special with Caoimhe Butterly. I first met Caoimhe when we hosted a delegation of Zapatistas at ACLAÍ in 2021, and was really happy to get a chance to chat to her at length for this episode. Caoimhe is a human rights campaigner, educator, film-maker and therapist who has spent over twenty years working in humanitarian and social justice contexts in Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico, Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon and with refugee communities in Europe. In this episode we talk about some of Caoimhe's work past and present, working within marganilsed and migrating communities, and touch on the role of self-care and compassion when undertaking work in what can often be a traumatising environment. This chat flowed very naturally, and while the subject matter was at times heavy I really enjoyed talking to Caoimhe. This epsidoe was edited by Emma Ní Chearúil.

This is our first proper episode back after the bit of. Break over the last few months. I recorded this chat with Timmy and James from the Two Norries Podcast about 4 months ago in the social space at ACLAÍ. This is such a special episode for me as I got to spend more time with Timmy and James who I first met when I was a guest on the 2 Norrries a while back. We chatted about some of the socio-economic divides that exist in Cork city and the lads share some of their own stories in a very personal and honest way. I can't thank the lads enough for being guests on the show, and I think this episode will be of help to someone out there as well as being a great listen and insight into Timmy and James's journeys so far.
It has been 15 weeks since the last episode and this one is a short catchup with Ainle to get the ball rolling again. The chat veers towards ACLAÍ, one year anniversaries, music, and the plan for RMP in the upcoming weeks. There is a howling wind to be heard during this episode and a bit of whinging from Neansaí, the latest addition to the Rebel Matters household!
