Mills has a low back strain, and Miley is dealing with left elbow inflammation. Simmons is working through right shoulder inflammation. Each IL stint was made retroactive to Monday. Mills’ IL stint helped pave the way for right-hander Michael Rucker to make the opening-day roster for the first time. Rucker, who turns 28 on April 27, had no record and a 6.99 ERA in 20 appearances for Chicago last summer in his first big league action. MLB – White Sox 3B Moncada to miss 3 weeks with strained oblique The Chicago White Sox expect third baseman Yoán Moncada to miss the first three weeks of the season because of a strained right oblique. The team placed Moncada on the 10-day injured list on Thursday as part of a flurry of moves to get the roster down to 28 players. General manager Rick Hahn told reporters in Detroit, where the White Sox open against the Tigers on Friday, that Moncada will likely miss about three weeks. The 26-year-old Cuban was scratched from the spring training finale against San Diego on Tuesday. Moncada batted .263 with 14 homers and 61 RBIs last season, helping the White Sox win the AL Central and make the playoffs for the second straight year. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Seattle Kraken 2, Chicago Blackhawks 0 Kraken 2, Blackhawks 0 – Grubauer, Kraken blank sinking Blackhawks 2-0 Philipp Grubauer made 29 saves for Seattle’s second shutout, and the expansion Kraken blanked the sliding Chicago Blackhawks 2-0. Alex Wennberg scored his 10th goal in the second period and Jordan Eberle added his 18th late in the third to seal it. Grubauer was only lightly tested by the Blackhawks, who dropped their sixth straight game and occasionally were booed by their home crowd. Grubauer, who recorded his 20th career shutout, also was in net for the Kraken’s first shutout on Feb. 2 against the Islanders. Chicago goalie Kevin Lankinen stopped 29 shots. The Pioneers will play for the title Saturday night against Minnesota State — a 5-1 winner over Minnesota in the second semifinal. It would be Denver’s ninth men’s hockey championship, tying Michigan for the most in NCAA history. Magnus Chrona made 19 saves for the Pioneers. Brett Stapley and Cameron Wright also scored for Denver. But both times Michigan tied it — on goals from Jimmy Lambert and Thomas Bordeleau. NCAAWBKB – NCAA Women’s Tournament TV rights could have different look The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament reported strong viewership numbers this week. The event is packaged with 28 others in a broadcast rights deal with ESPN. That agreement expires in two years. There is speculation that the NCAA might see if the women’s tournament can be marketed as its own event. One estimate is that it could be sold for $100 million. NCAA President Mark Emmert says all options are on the table. NCAAFB – Kelly on leaving Irish for LSU: ‘We were on different paths’ Brian Kelly is settled in at LSU after 12 seasons at Notre Dame. Kelly tells The Associated Press he wanted to be at a place where he had all “the resources to win a national championship.” He says he was prepared to spend the rest of his career at Notre Dame. But he says they ended up on different paths on how to get there. He says he is fine with the change. LSU gave the 60-year-old coach a 10-year, $95 million contract. Golf – The Masters – Im leads, Woods plays well Tiger Woods played pretty well at the Masters on Thursday. Sungjae Im was a little better. Im opened with a 5-under 67 for a one-stroke lead over Cameron Smith at Augusta National. He recovered from a pair of bogeys with a 12-foot eagle putt on the 13th and added a late birdie. Smith opened and closed with double bogeys, but he also had eight birdies. Scottie Scheffler and Dustin Johnson are two shots back, as are Danny Willett and Joaquin Niemann. Woods had three birdies and two bogeys in a 1-under 71 that leaves him tied for 11th. It was his first competitive round since shattering a leg in a car accident 14 months ago. Let's talk about the business of wellness… My guest today is Alec Mills, the Co-Founder of DAME, a sustainable personal care brand which found fame by launching the world's first reusable tampon applicator. Along with his business partner, Celia Pool, Alec reflects on the journey the duo have been on from idea to scaling up – and the various iterations, mistakes, and challenges overcome along the way. In this episode, we're talking about how startups in the wellness space are challenging convention AND big business, to do things differently, and to shape a future that is more consumer-friendly, more conscious and for Alec, paves the way to a more sustainable market for period-care for his own daughters too. The conversation is full of practical insights on how to get PR traction with little to no budget, why innovation matters, and how to be truly disruptive. The Cubs finished out a win in their suspended game from Tuesday, but lost the highly anticipated Jason Vargas and Alec Mills matchup. The Mets jumped on Mills early with a first inning grand slam and won the game, 10-3. Sean Sears and I talked about that, plus whether or not Mills might get another start. We also gave a quick Kris Bryant update in the first segment and reminisced about a special Cubs anniversary. In the second segment, we talked about Brandon Kintzler. Wow. He is pretty, pretty, pretty bad. But in addition, could there be one open bullpen spot for a potential postseason run? In the final segment, we updated the NL Central standings and talked about Josh Donaldson going on waivers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Cubs swept the Reds in a four-game series at home for the first time since 1945. That seems noteworthy. Sean Sears and I discussed what went well in their last few games, including a lot about the pitching. Alec Mills was outstanding in his first big league start, and the Cubs are going to give him another shot in the rotation. In the second segment, we gave some injury updates on Kris Bryant, Brandon Morrow, and others. The Cubs could be in really good shape once September starts, if all goes as planned.Later in the second segment, we talked about a handful of pitching prospects that have really stepped up and played well this year in the minors. So much so, that dare I say the Cubs have more pitching prospect depth than positional depth? In the final segment, we updated the standings and issued a minor correction from a previous podcast. It seems like we're saying goodbye to Cubs players more and more, here on Locked On Cubs. Today, it's reliever Justin Grimm. After a rough 2017 and a few bad appearances this spring, the Cubs decided to let him go now and open up some competition for the final roster spot. Or could it be two final roster spots?I examined some relievers that could be contending for the final spots in the bullpen, including one that I think most of us hadn't even considered. Eddie Butler, Dillon Maples, Shae Simmons, Randy Rosario, and even Alec Mills have a chance of coming out of spring training in the bullpen for the Cubs. Finally, I took a deeper look at Cubs non-roster invitee Ryan Court. He grew up a big Cubs fan, and just in general is a guy you want to root for. Welcome to episode 24 of Locked On Cubs! The Cubs played the San Diego Padres on Thursday, and Ian Happ hit his third home run of the spring! Unfortunately, Chicago suffered yet another tie. Insert joke about kissing your sister. Alec Mills pitched well in a spot start, with Yu Darvish on the mend from an illness. It appears that Yu is going to be okay, though. After recapping the game, I look forward to Friday's tilt between Jose Quintana's Cubs and Shohei Ohtani's Los Angeles Angels.I spent the next two segments looking at a few Cubs notes in Jon Heyman's Inside Baseball on FanRag Sports. He mentioned a few names that the Cubs liked as possible replacements for Joe Maddon -- someday. I gave my top-three, as well, but feel free to tweet @LockedOnCubs to tell me how wrong I am. Finally, I discussed Heyman's note about the Cubs and their level of interest in signing free agent reliever Greg Holland.
