The Penn State child sex abuse scandal concerned allegations and subsequent convictions of child sexual abuse committed by Jerry Sandusky, an assistant coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team, over a period of at least fifteen years. The scandal began to emerge publicly in March 2011 and broke in early November 2011 when Sandusky was indicted on 52 counts of child molestation, stemming from incidents that occurred between 1994 and 2009.[1] Sandusky was ultimately convicted on 45 counts of child sexual abuse on June 22, 2012,[2] and was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of 60 years in prison.[3]Additionally, three Penn State officials – school president Graham Spanier, vice president Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley – were charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, failure to report suspected child abuse, and related charges.[4] The Penn State Board of Trustees commissioned an independent investigation by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, whose report stated that Penn State's longtime head football coach Joe Paterno, along with Spanier, Curley and Schultz, had known about allegations of child abuse by Sandusky as early as 1998, had shown "total and consistent disregard...for the safety and welfare of Sandusky's child victims", and "empowered" Sandusky to continue his acts of abuse by failing to disclose them.[5]: 14 [6][7] Shortly after the scandal broke, Spanier resigned. The Board of Trustees terminated the contracts of Paterno and Curley. As a result of the scandal, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) imposed sanctions on the Penn State football program: a $60 million fine, a four-year postseason ban, scholarship reductions, and a vacation of all victories from 1998 to 2011.[8] These sanctions were considered to be among the most severe ever imposed on an NCAA member school. NCAA President Mark Emmert stated that the sanctions were levied "not to be just punitive, but to make sure the university establishes an athletic culture and daily mindset in which football will never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people."[9][10] The Big Ten Conference subsequently imposed an additional $13 million fine.[11]The Paterno family retained former Attorney General Richard Thornburgh to conduct a review of the Freeh report, which concluded that the report constituted a "rush to injustice" that could not be relied upon[12][13] and that Freeh's evidence fell "far short" of showing that Joe Paterno attempted to conceal the scandal, but rather that "the contrary is true".[13] In January 2013, state senator Jake Corman and state treasurer Rob McCord sued the NCAA, seeking to overturn the Penn State sanctions on the basis that Freeh had been actively collaborating with the organization and that due process had not been followed. In November 2014, Corman released emails showing "regular and substantive" contact between Freeh's investigators and the NCAA, suggesting that Freeh's conclusions were orchestrated.[14] As part of a settlement, the NCAA restored the 111 wins to Paterno's record on January 16, 2015.[15][10]Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

On Friday, September 9th, I was joined on campus at the University of Florida by NCAA President Mark Emmert. Special thanks to the UF Institute for Coaching Excellence for hosting this, which was an interview for both of the NIL courses I teach at UF in the Sports Management and PR departments. Students and athletes alike were invited, and I appeared in my capacity as a professor. Although this was not a media interview, the NCAA has granted me permission to share it.In our nearly 90 minutes together, we discussed:How Year 1 of NIL played outBiggest challenges ahead for NILWhether Congress will pass a bill to regulate NILThe debate over student athletes becoming employeesCompensating student athletes as ambassadors of universitiesThe challenges of student athletes unionizingWhere NIL goes from hereThere were so many great nuggets in this conversation, but especially the concept of student athletes as brand ambassadors, which comes up several times throughout the interview. You can read a summary of the parts of this discussion that interested me the most on Business of College Sports. You can also follow me on Twitter and Instagram to discuss further, ask additional questions or suggest future episodes. You can find more of my analysis on the business of college sports at BusinessofCollegeSports.com and Forbes.
NCAA President Mark Emmert stopped by Sport Scene with Steve Russell to discuss the latest developments with NIL and college athletes becoming Brand Ambassadors for their Universities.

How we handle it is our test. * The decision: The use of agency – This is a great story! The findings were similar to those of a recent pre-print analysis that found “no evidence of a reduction in overall mortality in the mRNA vaccine trials.” And a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that two doses of the mRNA vaccines increased the risk of COVID-19 infection during the omicron wave. * Disney changes ‘fairy godmothers' to gender-neutral ‘apprentices' at theme parks. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

Lots to cover and lots to drink in the latest edition of the Doc Talk Podcast. We know a lot of you are sick and tired of us talking about NIL which is now really just pay for play. The NCAA is now considering action against teams that a blatantly breaking the rules and setting standards for NIL moving forward. But is now the time to do it? NCAA President Mark Emmert announced he was stepping down. Under the leadership of Emmert, the NCAA in our opinion and that of many others has been a complete joke! Should the NCAA wait for a new President to take action or should it reign in what is currently out of control? Nebraska gets slapped on the hand by the NCAA. Really? We have players getting million-dollar deals and fancy cars and it seems more concerned with giving Scott Frost a one-year show cause because an analyst did some “coaching”? The absurdity is frustrating and comical at the same time. Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice also talk about the recent transfer portal addition for the Huskers. There is a lot of hype, but can the players live up to it? Really, only time will tell. We drink a couple of different beers in this edition. Some from South Dakota and some from Wisconsin. Thanks to our loyal listeners for sending us these fine brews. If you think we are missing out on something good to drink, let us know! Speaking of great craft beer. Steve, Jay and Dee discuss all the breaking news including the announcement that NCAA President Mark Emmert will be stepping down.
MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Minnesota Twins 5, Detroit Tigers 4 Kansas City Royals 6, Chicago White Sox 0 Atlanta Braves 3, Chicago Cubs 1 Twins 5, Tigers 4 – Tigers throw it away: Wild toss in 9th gives Twins crazy win Detroit catcher Eric Haase made a throwing error on a botched rundown, capping a chaotic play that gave the Minnesota Twins two runs for a 5-4 win over the Tigers. Miguel Sanó had the final hit for the Twins — and his ill-advised baserunning wound up helping them win their fifth in a row. The Twins trailed 4-3 when Detroit closer Gregory Soto walked Trevor Larnach and Gio Urshela to start the inning. With one out, Sanó hit a line drive that glanced off right fielder Robbie Grossman’s glove and rolled to the wall for a rocket of a single. Larnach was held up at third base, but Sanó kept running toward second and Twins runners seemed trapped. But Haase throw soared over third baseman Jeimer Candelario’s head and two runs scored. Royals 6, White Sox 0 – Lynch shines as Royals blank slumping White Sox 6-0 Daniel Lynch pitched six crisp innings and the Kansas City Royals handed the Chicago White Sox their eighth straight loss with a 6-0 victory. Bobby Witt Jr. had two hits and Carlos Santana drove in two runs, helping Kansas City stop a four-game slide. The Royals were outscored 22-12 in a sweep at Seattle over the weekend. Lynch allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked two. The White Sox issued 11 walks and committed two more errors, running their major league-leading total to 20. It’s the longest losing streak for Chicago since it dropped eight in a row in June 2018. Braves 3, Cubs 1 – Demeritte, Fried lead Braves to needed win, 3-1 over Cubs Travis Demeritte hit his first big league homer in nearly three years and made a sliding catch to back another strong outing by Max Fried. That gave the Atlanta Braves a much-needed 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The reigning World Series champions won for only the third time in their last eight games. The Cubs have now lost six of seven. Fried pitched four-hit ball over six innings. His only big mistake was a changeup that Ian Happ took deep leading off the third. Demeritte broke up a 1-1 tie in the fifth with a homer into the Chop House restaurant off Marcus Stroman. Today Kansas City (Greinke 0-1) at Chicago White Sox (Cease 2-1), 2:10 p.m. Chicago Cubs (Leiter Jr. 0-1) at Atlanta (Morton 1-2), 7:20 p.m. Detroit (Pineda 1-0) at Minnesota (Ryan 2-1), 7:40 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 7:20 MLB – White Sox OF Eloy Jiménez has surgery to repair torn tendon Chicago White Sox outfielder Eloy Jiménez has undergone surgery to repair a torn hamstring tendon behind his right knee. The White Sox expect Jiménez to return in six to eight weeks. Jiménez got hurt during Saturday’s 9-2 loss at Minnesota when he stretched for first base while running out a grounder to third. The 25-year-old slugger stumbled after the play and his right knee appeared to lock up. Jiménez’s injury is similar to the one that sidelined White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal for almost two months last season. NCAA – NCAA President Mark Emmert stepping down no later than 2023 NCAA President Mark Emmert is stepping down after 12 years on the job. NCAA Board of Governors Chairman John DeGioia announced the move and said it was by mutual agreement. Emmert will continue to serve in his role until a new president is selected and in place or until June 30, 2023. Emmert was appointed to the job in April 2010. He had led the University of Washington and LSU prior to taking over at the NCAA. The job has changed radically since then. Golf – The Open – Record crowd of nearly 300K expected for Open at St. Andrews The British Open had a modest return of fans last year because of the pandemic. Now it’s full capacity and the R&A expects a record turnout for St. Andrews this summer. Organizers anticipate 290,000 spectators at the Old Course. That would smash the record of 239,000 at St. Andrews in 2000 when Tiger Woods completed the career Grand Slam. Woods will be back at St. Andrews for the sixth time. NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Playoffs – First Round Last Night Miami Heat 97, Atlanta Hawks 94 (MIA Wins 4-1) Memphis Grizzlies 111, Minnesota Timberwolves 109 (MEM Leads 3-2) Phoenix Suns 112, New Orleans Pelicans 97 (PHX Leads 3-2) Tonight Chicago Bulls at Milwaukee Bucks, 7:30 p.m. (MIL Leads 3-1) Denver Nuggets at Golden State Warriors, 10:00 p.m. (GSW Leads 3-1) NBA – LaVine enters health protocols with Bulls trailing Bucks 3-1 The Chicago Bulls might have to get by without Zach LaVine when they try to avoid playoff elimination by the Milwaukee Bucks. Coach Billy Donovan says LaVine wasn’t feeling great. He is in the health and safety protocols for the third time in a year. He tested positive for the coronavirus last April and again in December. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Toronto Maple Leafs 3, Detroit Red Wings 0 Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 0 – Matthews scores 2 to reach 60 goals as Leafs top Wings 3-0 Auston Matthews scored two goals to reach 60 for the season as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 to clinch home-ice advantage in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The 24-year-old, who snapped a five-game goal drought, is the first player to score 60 times in a campaign since Steven Stamkos in 2011-12. John Tavares had the other goal and Jack Campbell made 20 saves to register his fifth shutout of the season for Toronto (53-21-7), which set a franchise record with its 30th home victory of the season. William Nylander added two assists. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 33 shots for Detroit (31-40-10). Tonight Vegas Golden Knights at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. NHL – Customs seizes counterfeit 1936 Red Wings’ Stanley Cup rings U.S. Customs and Border Protection has seized 10 counterfeit Stanley Cup rings for the 1936 Detroit Red Wings championship team due to trademark violations. Customs officers at the Port of Champlain facility in New York found the rings valued at $15,000 earlier this month after examining a shipment. CBP said the shipment violated the intellectual property rights of the Red Wings’ trademark. The 1936 Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Cup Final. NFL – Lions exercise 5th-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson The Detroit Lions have exercised their fifth-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson. A first-round pick in 2019 out of Iowa, Hockenson has 160 receptions for 1,673 yards and 12 touchdowns in his three seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020. NFL – Bears GM Ryan Poles interested in acquiring more draft picks With so many roster holes heading into his first NFL draft, Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles is looking closely for trade partners so the team can acquire more picks. The Bears have six picks and none in the first or fourth rounds. Poles doesn’t necessarily view it as a situation where he’s pressured to find a receiver or offensive lineman in a particular spot to help quarterback Justin Fields. But he is looking to elevate the team overall. Poles likens what he has done with the roster so far to what he and his wife see on home-improvement shows on television. NFL – Fountains, scubas, slot machines, Ferris wheel and NFL draft NFL draft night on Thursday will include prospects walking a red carpet above the Bellagio fountains, a theater built specifically for the proceedings where they hope to hear their names called early, and the aura of gambling everywhere. It’s a different look for a league that long shunned any association with betting. There’s no question this draft has the flavor of Sin City. The league seems very pleased about that. The draft will also spotlight the league’s partnership with casino company Caesars Entertainment. IIHF – Russia removed as host of 2023 worlds in men’s ice hockey Russia has been removed as host of the 2023 world championship in men’s ice hockey. The tournament was to be played in Vladimir Putin’s home city St. Petersburg. The International Ice Hockey Federation cites “concern for the safety and well-being of all participating players, officials, media, and fans” for the decision. It was the latest blow to Russia in its favored winter sports in the fallout from the country’s war on Ukraine. Ice hockey’s decision comes one day after Russia’s signature annual international figure skating competition was pulled. Tennis – Djokovic can play at Wimbledon; no vaccination required The All England Club says Novak Djokovic will be allowed to defend his title at Wimbledon despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19 because the shots are not required to enter Britain. Djokovic is a 34-year-old from Serbia who is ranked No. 1. He missed the Australian Open in January after being deported from that country because he had not received the vaccination against the illness caused by the coronavirus. Wimbledon starts on June 27. All England Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton said during Tuesday’s annual briefing that vaccination will not be a condition of entry for players to compete at the Grand Slam tournament this year. Tennis – Wimbledon defends ‘agonizing decision’ to ban Russians All England Club officials are defending the decision to bar players from Russia and Belarus from Wimbledon this year because of the invasion of Ukraine. Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton says there is a responsibility to limit the possibility of Russians’ success at Wimbledon being used as a propaganda tool by that country. Reigning U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev is among the prominent players affected by the ban. Medvedev recently reached No. 1 in the rankings and is currently No. 2. After Russia attacked Ukraine in February — with help from Belarus — tennis players from Russia and Belarus were able to continue competing but as “neutral” athletes not formally representing their nations. Horse Racing – 2nd horse in 2 days dies in training at Santa Anita A filly has died after suffering a training injury at Santa Anita in what is the track’s second such death in two days and fifth this year. According to the California Horse Racing Board, the 4-year-old filly named Cayton Kid suffered a musculoskeletal injury at the Arcadia track. A 3-year-old filly named Magnolia suffered the same type of training injury Monday and was euthanized. Of the five deaths at Santa Anita this year, four happened during training and one during a race. That’s down sharply from the 42 horse deaths at the track in 2019, which prompted a slew of rules changes. Mills’ IL stint helped pave the way for right-hander Michael Rucker to make the opening-day roster for the first time. MLB – White Sox 3B Moncada to miss 3 weeks with strained oblique The Chicago White Sox expect third baseman Yoán Moncada to miss the first three weeks of the season because of a strained right oblique. The team placed Moncada on the 10-day injured list on Thursday as part of a flurry of moves to get the roster down to 28 players. General manager Rick Hahn told reporters in Detroit, where the White Sox open against the Tigers on Friday, that Moncada will likely miss about three weeks. NCAAWBKB – NCAA Women’s Tournament TV rights could have different look The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament reported strong viewership numbers this week. The event is packaged with 28 others in a broadcast rights deal with ESPN. That agreement expires in two years. There is speculation that the NCAA might see if the women’s tournament can be marketed as its own event. One estimate is that it could be sold for $100 million. NCAA President Mark Emmert says all options are on the table. NCAAFB – Kelly on leaving Irish for LSU: ‘We were on different paths’ Brian Kelly is settled in at LSU after 12 seasons at Notre Dame. Chris Kreider scored his 46th goal overall and NHL-high 24th on the power play. Ryan Reaves and Filip Chytil also scored for the Rangers, while Alexandar Georgiev made 22 saves. Michael Rasmussen, Jakub Vrana, Tyler Bertuzzi and Adam Erne scored for Detroit, and Moritz Seider added two assists. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 29 shots, but the Red Wings lost their fourth straight. The Nuggets led by as many as 31 points in the second quarter before the Pacers stormed back. Indiana led 102-100 with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter before the Nuggets scored seven straight points to regain control. Seven of the nine Pacers who played scored in double figures, led by Buddy Hield with 20 points. Same for his team, which is looking for the slugger to play a key role this year. They’re all feeling much better now. Vaughn was diagnosed with a hip pointer and could return to game action in one to two weeks. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft ditched his crutches Tuesday and already is swinging a bat again. But the team is planning to be cautious with when he returns to the field. NFL – Arians retires as Bucs’ coach, Bowles promoted to top spot Bruce Arians has decided to retire as coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and move into a front-office role with the team, a stunning move announced Wednesday night. Arians, who will turn 70 this coming season, coached the Bucs to the Super Bowl title in the 2020 season which was Tom Brady’s first with Tampa Bay. The Bucs were 31-18 in Arians’ three seasons there and he was 80-48-1 in eight seasons as a head coach overall when adding in his five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will replace Arians as coach. WNBA – WNBA players break silence on Brittney Griner Two of Brittney Griner’s USA Basketball teammates have broken their silence on the star player’s imprisonment in Russia. Most WNBA players have been hesitant to talk about Griner’s detention on apparent drug charges in Russia, hoping to avoid potentially hurting her case. Players have been keeping discussions about how to best help Griner within their community. WNBA players have been very cohesive in the past when rallying behind issues such as voter registration or the Black Lives Matters movement. For the first few weeks, it was decided that it was clearly better for them to say less. NCAA – Emmert claims progress in women’s NCAAs, not close on pay A year after glaring inequities were revealed at the women’s NCAA Tournament and less than two weeks after sharp criticism from Congress, NCAA President Mark Emmert says he is happy with the institution’s progress but said there had only been “preliminary discussions” about distributing tournament revenues to women’s programs. Emmert said the work ahead improving conditions for women’s basketball includes negotiating a new television contract for the women’s tournament and potentially having a similar revenue distribution protocol as the men’s event. Emmert was careful not to call for specific changes ahead of discussions by the NCAA’s hundreds of member schools, and he declined to offer his own viewpoint. NCAA – March Madness paying off for players under mishmash of rules This week, Kansas, Villanova, North Carolina and Duke will play in the first Final Four to take place under the new world of “name, image and likeness” endorsements in college sports. It allows college players to earn money through endorsements. This new world is comprised of a loosely regulated mishmash of state laws and university-written rules that set different standards across the nation with little transparency about who gets what or where it comes from. On the one hand, it’s seen as a long-overdue development that will forever change the landscape of what has been widely disparaged as among the most unfair labor markets in America. On the other, trouble could be looming for an industry with few rules that doles out big bucks to teenagers with big dreams. NCAA – Women’s Final Four can be a financial windfall for players Women’s basketball is ranked second, behind only college football and ahead of men’s basketball, when it comes to the amount of income generated by name, image and likeness deals. That is according to Blake Lawrence, the chief executive of Opendorse. His company helps colleges and athletes navigate the celebrity endorsement landscape, which was opened last summer by the NCAA and now has millions of dollars flowing through it. He says making it to the Final Four will only increase the deals coming to social-media influencers such as Stanford’s Cameron Brink and UConn’s Paige Bueckers. Soccer – CONCACAR – US returns to World Cup despite 2-0 loss at Costa Rica The United States men are returning to the World Cup after the trauma of missing the 2018 tournament, clinching a berth for this year’s championship in Qatar despite a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica on the final night of qualifying. Juan Pablo Vargas got behind Walker Zimmerman and headed Brandon Aguilera’s corner kick past goalkeeper Zack Steffen in the 51st minute, and Anthony Contreras knocked in a cross off a scramble in the 59th after Steffen couldn’t hold onto a free kick. A sellout crowd of about 35,000 in National Stadium came to life, but the Americans’ 5-1 rout of Panama at home last weekend gave them a huge goal-difference margin over Costa Rica. Soccer – World Cup – FIFA, Qatar prepare for unprecedented World Cup finals draw A World Cup like no other in its 92-year history will take shape this week at an unprecedented tournament draw. When FIFA and host nation Qatar stage the draw ceremony show Friday three of the 32 entries will be placeholders. That’s because the three-year qualifying program has been delayed by the pandemic and war in Ukraine. It means 37 nations will be involved Friday. Five of those ultimately won’t play in November when the first “winter” World Cup kicks off. Qatar is in the draw pot of top-seeded teams with the world’s best: Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Spain and Portugal.
