Today, Ali and Asif start off the episode by addressing some listener mail. Then they discuss the  new documentary by Ron Howard out on Disney plus entitled “Jim Henson: Idea Man” (6:59). The guys go over Jim Henson's early background, how he got into puppetry and his early successes appearing on American variety shows.  Asif and Ali then discuss when they first encountered Henson's work. They then discuss Henson's lifelong collaboration with puppeteer and filmmaker Frank Oz.    They then go over the successful and not so successful movies of Henson, the eventual sale of The Muppets to Disney and Henson's legacy.     Jim Hensen died of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), so in the second half, Ali asks Asif about this diagnosis (36:19). Asif starts off by discussing the bacteria which cause TSS (Staph aureus and Group A strep) and how these bacteria produce toxins which cause TSS. He then talks about how common it is and the risk factors for developing TSS. Ali asks Asif about the relationship between hyper-absorbant tampons and TSS; Asif goes into detail about the history of this association and the increased incidence of this occurring in women using tampons in the late 1970's and early 1980's. He then talks about the common presenting symptoms, the prognosis and how it is treated.  The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Roman: Howdy Dr. Cabral! When I eat avocados, I get an itchy throat. I typically just eat half an avocado. Is this an avocado allergy? I remember experiencing something similar after eating bananas, this hasn't happened in a long time though. Do I keep eating avocados? I mainly eat them because of all their health benefits and because they are delicious. What else might this reaction in my throat tell me? Thank you!   Heather: Hi there! Thanks as always for taking the time to answer our questions! Can you tell me a little bit about Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)? I searched the podcast archives and couldn't find any episodes on the topic. My cousin got it from using tampons and I was wondering what could be done naturally for TSS and if she could use non-toxic tampons in the future. Thanks again!   Jaclyn: Hi Dr. Cabral! I'm an IHP & am so fortunate to have been taught by you. I love being able to share your podcasts/knowledge with friends family & clients, you have really changed my life in so many ways. Thank you! Personally, I wanted to write in & ask if you have any feedback regarding FACTOR V. I was diagnosed after my Mom's diagnosis (she had pulmonary embolisms after a long elective surgery) but she went two pregnancies, c-sections and other surgeries without knowing until this happened in her 50's. Now I am family planning & my OBGYN said i will need to take a baby aspirin daily while pregnant or heprin injections. This is very scary to me considering I do not take any medications, any information on this condition and especially alternative supplements would be greatly appreciated!   Anonymous: Hi, dr. C I had the flu in January and I was feeling run down for 3 weeks later still (I have fibromyalgia so everything seems to last longer for me, is it to do with mitochondria and ATP?), last 3 months I also have tinnitus & it's getting worse, can you help me with that, please? Now I had flu-like symptoms again for 1 day and sore throat & coughing up mucus for a week. Yesterday I went to sleep earlier because my body just felt so tired & I slept for almost 12h! Oura says it was 11h 48min & although there's 3h 18min of REM, there's only 1h 36min of deep sleep & a lot of it at the end, so if I slept a normal 8h, it would be much less. Usually I almost never get 90min of deep sleep. Why am I getting so little deep sleep & how to make it better? Thank you for your help   Marica: Hello Dr Cabral, Could you talk a little about selenium supplementation and its possible side effects? I was about to start taking some selenium supplements to help with my TED and I just read somewhere that it can cause skin cancer. Thanks so much!   Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3005 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Lauren was born into a family of models and started modelling at just 2 months old. She was beginning to make a name for herself in the modelling industry when at 24 years old she contracted Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) from a tampon. TSS is a life-threatening complication from bacterial infections, and due to infection both of Lauren's legs were amputated. 3 years after being just 10 minutes from death, Lauren made her return to modelling at 27 years old in her now trademark golden legs. NK cells kill cancer cells with the help of small “killer torpedoes,” or vesicles, that the NK cells secrete. Vesicles are small bubbles with a fatty wall of lipids and a space filled with toxic proteins. Researchers at the Institute of Clinical Medicine in Norway have recently discovered new things about these killer vesicles.“We have discovered that we can separate the killer torpedoes from other types of vesicles so that they form a kind of arsenal of weapons. Our research also shows that this type of vesicle is probably stored in a separate room inside the NK cell,” Miriam Aarsund Larsen said.Model N publishes revenue reportModel N, Inc. recently announced the results of its fifth annual State of Revenue Report. The report captures detailed data intended to help life sciences and high-tech industry executives grappling with how to grow company revenue and market share. Most executives named inflation as a significant headwind, with 84% calling it the single biggest impact on innovation.“Our findings show three main themes: Innovation collides with current market realities, innovation directly impacts revenue management, and the use of technology for revenue management is expanding,” said Suresh Kannan, chief product officer, Model N. “As organizations continue to navigate the current economic climate, the quality and reliability of technology solutions are more important than ever. These insights help us understand how to empower our customers to create and bring life-changing products to market.”Phase 2 study of breakthrough vaccine against toxic shock syndrome successfully completedThe first vaccine to potentially prevent Staphylococcal-induced toxic shock syndrome (TSS) has successfully completed a phase 2 study. TSS is a life-threatening condition caused by toxins that can lead to multiple organ failure and death.Nosocomial pathogen Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria are resistant to widely used antibiotics. Infections with MRSA are harder to treat and therapies are more expensive as the length of hospital stays is significantly prolonged. If the treatment does not lead to rapid clearance of the bacterial pathogen, dangerous symptoms such as septic or toxic shock can occur – a potentially life-threatening condition.Researchers at Biomedical Research & Bio-Products AG, under the direction of Martha Eibl, in cooperation with MedUni Vienna's Department of Clinical Pharmacology, conducted the study. The promising results showed the TSST-1 vaccine is safe and effective, with immunization lasting for at least two years.

The conversation dives into the importance of talking about arthritis and its lack of representation in the science curriculum. She talks about her accommodations, such as having transportation and picking her university courses before other people. Welcome to PICU Doc On Call, A Podcast Dedicated to Current and Aspiring Intensivists. I'm Pradip Kamat and I'm Rahul Damania and we are coming to you from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta - Emory University School of Medicine. Welcome to our Episode of a 16 year old with fever and a rash. Here's the case: A 16 year old F presents to the PICU with generalized weakness, fever and a diffuse rash**.** Three days prior to admission she stated that she was feeling lightheaded and the day after she started having frequent non-bloody diarrhea. She states that she has otherwise been healthy, no sick contacts or travel, and the only change in her life was her menstrual cycle which ended a few days before her symptoms started. She says that about two weeks ago, she went to her primary care physician to get an in-grown toe nail drained, but was able to recover after some analgesia and antibiotics for a week. On day of admission her mother brings her into the ED as she says her rash continues to progress. Her mother states that the rash looks like a sunburn. Mother noticed on day of admission that her daughter now had red injected eyes bilaterally without discharge, and was becoming increasingly confused with her fevers. Of note, the patient has also has had decreased oral intake as she says her mouth quote hurts when she swallows. She has had no sore throat, congestion, dysuria, or headache. She presents to the ED febrile to 39 C and tachycardic to 130 bpm. She is ill appearing and has orthostatic vital signs. Her exam is notable for palpable diffuse myalgia, oropharyngeal hyperemia, diffuse erythroderma, and conjunctival injection. She is noted to have a hyperdynamic precordium and faint crackles bilaterally. Her L toe is mildly erythematous with no discharge, necrosis or pain to palpation. Acute resuscitation and diagnostics are begun and patient is transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit. To summarize key elements from this case, this patient has: Hx of a fever and multisystem involvement including GI manifestations, myalgias, confusion, mucositis, and rash This is in the setting of a local drainage procedure and course of antibiotics. In addition, she presents now with fever, hypotension, and tachycardia. These elements so far bring up a broad differential but for now we can agree that it seems that she has signs of acute inflammation or infection throughout her body. nsition into some history and physical exam components of this case. If we take a step back, what are key history features in a child who presents with fever & rash? Understanding the characteristics of the rash, the evolution, and progression of the rash is important. In the setting of myalgias, fever, headache, and rash you should think of assessing for any recent travel as tick-borne illnesses commonly present with this symptomatology. You also want to assess for recent antibiotic exposures, sexual history, and surgical history - in our case, our patient had a recent procedure on her toe Are there some red-flag symptoms or physical exam components which you could highlight? Absolutely, when a child presents with fever and a rash, it is important to stratify two major elements: You want to assess the degree of toxicity in relation to the symptomatology: Lethargy, irritatbility, altered sensorium, poor perfusion, pallor or cyanosis may indicate serious illness. Understanding the duration of fever in the setting of suspected total body inflammation is important, however the importance of the heigh of fever in predicting the risk of serious illness is unclear. We will visit a differential a bit later in this podcast, however I do want to highlight that the presence of tachycardia and tachypnea in any patient with fever and rash suggests the possibility of sepsis. When you notice these red-flag symptoms it is important to focus on resuscitation and treatment rather than pursuing diagnostics. To continue with our case, our patients...

When we say the Teen Life topics of the August 1988 issue run the gamut, that is precisely what we mean. We're going to start with the story of the youngest person ever sentenced to Death Row; then review the results of a survey conducted on 300 boys in malls, on topics ranging from when they want to get married to which outfit they'd most like to see you wear on a date. Crushing on a teacher? Christina has advice on that, some of which has not aged so well. And Barbara Bondrack's short story takes us backstage at a rock show...sort of. On The Road takes us to Boston; Body Talk covers exercise bands and constipation; Help has some advice about confusing sex dreams and bed-wetting (unrelated). Two extremely important departments make their début: Stuff You Wrote and It Happened To Me! And the first IHTM is about...getting an abortion! Gwyneth Paltrow is a woman of many talents and innovations but there is one Goop product that I do NOT recommend… That's the Jade Egg.  Sure, there are claims online that a stone egg up your hoo-ha can do everything from balance your hormones to strengthen your vaginal muscles...  But the reality is that this little sucker can actually cause some serious damage! Women's vaginas are sensitive.  That means we have to be extra careful with what goes inside of them.  In this week's episode I'm diving into some of the strangest objects I've removed from patients' vaginas, the hazards associated with yoni eggs, and whether or not it's safe to masturbate with a cucumber. Give a listen for the inside scoop! I'll answer these common questions in this episode of The ME Spot Podcast... Are jade eggs safe to put in my vagina? Can I put a cucumber in me? How can I strengthen my vaginal muscles properly? Can I get a muscle spasm in my vagina? What is a yoni egg? You will learn... Examples of strange objects OBGYN's have removed from women's vaginas Why you shouldn't put porous materials in your vagina Causes of Toxic Shock Syndrome and how to avoid this health concern What medical practitioners think about jade eggs being used inside you Why you shouldn't try to lift things with your vagina to strengthen it Remember these takeaways... “When it comes to vaginal health, please trust the experts. Your GYN knows more than the celebrity who is trying to sell you something.” “Crystal eggs DO NOT belong in your hoo-ha! This is a recipe for infection, so save yourself the agony.” “If you've ever considered putting a cucumber or other cylindrical vegetable in your vagina… This is your sign NOT to do it!” “Women's vaginas are sensitive, so it's very important to be careful with what you insert down there.” “I've seen some pretty weird stuff shoved up patients' vaginas, so don't be afraid to tell the truth if you've gotten something stuck. Your doctor is there to help, not judge.” Your next best step now is... Come and join me in The ME Spot Community by visiting http://TheMeSpotPodcast.com -- it's free to join & we're having a blast! Contributor: Don Stader, MD Educational Pearls: Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare cause of shock typically caused by Staph aureus or Strep pyogenes, that produces a toxin that leads to rapid onset hypotension with a diffuse erythematous rash. Signs of TSS may include rapid onset of altered mental status, dizziness, nausea, abdominal discomfort, hypotension, and rash TSS is associated with foreign bodies, such as tampons or nasal packing - make sure to remove any offending object Clindamycin is the drug of choice because it stops protein synthesis which helps treat toxic shock because toxic shock is caused by a protein (TSST-1) made by the bacteria.   TSS is associated iwth high morbidity and mortality despite treatments Despite the association with TSS, there is little supporting evidence for prophylactic antibiotics when placing nasal packing References Gottlieb M, Long B, Koyfman A. Ep. 322: A Healthier Visit With Aunt Flo In this episode, Stacy and Sarah are getting up close and personal as they answer all your questions about menstruation! Why are conventional pads and tampons dangerous? What are the signs of Toxic Shock Syndrome? What safer period products and brands should I be using? And how the heck do I use a menstrual cup?!   Click here to listen in iTunes     If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 322: A Healthier Visit With Aunt Flo (0:00) Intro (0:40) Getting right to today's topic: menstruation! Disclaimer: If you typically listen to our podcast with your kids in the room, please note that this episode discusses female reproductive anatomy and feminine hygiene products. Today we're answering your questions about menstruation, including what products you should and shouldn't be using, the chemicals and questionable substances used in conventional products, and how it impacts female health. This topic came about back in September, when Stacy's period caught her by surprise on a trip. She was traveling without a menstrual cup (which she's used for 7+ years) and had to make the decision between pads and tampons. When Stacy switched to a cup, it reduced the length of her period, as well as the amount and intensity of cramping. Sharing her experience on social media sparked a lot of questions about the cup and safer menstruation practices, so we're here to dive into the science behind your questions! Sarah rarely uses tampons because intuitively, they always felt unsafe to her. As she dove into the research, it backed up her suspicions. But the good news is that there are so many safer options! Stacy and Sarah take a walk down memory lane, remembering the pads that were available on the market when they first started menstruating. Listeners - if you have a menstruation product and you love it, go to Stacy's Instagram and/or Sarah's Instagram posts for this podcast episode and leave a comment about what you're using and why you love it! (14:29) So what is the problem with conventional pads and tampons? It boils down to the fact that these materials aren't regulated. The companies are trying to solve the problem of "does this absorb liquid" without considering other important health factors. The vagina and vulva are mucus membranes that are highly absorbent, so there's the potential for those areas to absorb the chemicals and other known problematic materials used in conventional products. This can lead to chronic health problems like cancer. Research was almost non-existent for vaginal health until the 1990s. The earliest research was on sexually transmitted infections and how personal lubricants could affect the rate of infection transmission. These studies discovered chemicals like glycerine - which is still used in personal lubricants today - damages and irritates the vaginal barrier tissue. Funding for women's health studies is stunningly low. Thir party organizations like non profit advocacy groups have taken on the responsibility of doing this type of testing because it's incredibly important. (20:55) Female sex organs are highly absorptive Female sex organs are "self cleaning" because they need to be able to get rid of the foreign material introduced during intercourse. It's lined with mucus which provides a barrier and prevents bacteria from latching on and washes away harmful microorganisms. Like our gut, skin, and sinuses, vaginal tissues (including the external parts) are also semi-permeable. But they're much more absorptive than skin. Studies show hormones get into the blood stream very easily through the vaginal barrier. One hormone, when taken both vaginally and orally, was 10x stronger when delivered vaginally. This means you need to be mindful of everything that comes into contact with that area! For more on the regulation (or lack there of) of personal care products check out Episode 275: Cancer Risk from Personal Care Items. Beyond tampons and pads, also beware of vaginal wipes, personal lubricants, douches, vaginal perfumes - anything you're putting in contact with your lower regions. Even though the vagina is more absorptive than the intestines, there has never been a peer-reviewed study that measures the absorption of pesticides, dioxins, etc, from tampons or pads into the vagina. Crazy! Always avoid personal care items with fragrances! Fragrances are a "catch all" category for companies to put any ingredient they want without disclosing it. There are harmful fragrances that are added to tampons and pads which are known endocrine disrupters. (29:32) Chemicals in conventional tampons and pads Dioxins. Women absorb more dioxins through tampons than food in polluted areas. Furans. A chemical used to bleach tampons so they're white. Parabens. Endocrine disrupter and carcinogen. Pesticide residue. Third party testing has found at least 8 different detectable pesticide residues in one common brand of tampons. If you're spending money for grass-fed and organic foods, and clean self care products, this is something you need to be concerned about! (32:14) Toxic Shock Syndrome In the 70s and 80s there was a dramatic rise in toxic shock syndrome (TSS) when tampons became more widely used. At that time, 4 different types of synthetics were being used. After studies, 3 of those materials were removed from the market. TSS is caused by a toxin secreted by Staph. Aureus, a very common and problematic bacteria. During menses, the vagina creates a great breeding ground for Staph. Aureus and when you use a tampon, you're creating an even better environment for this bacteria to grow. TSS can be fatal. It doesn't occur frequently, but when it does, it requires medical care. Major symptoms of TSS include: Sudden high fever Dizziness when going from sitting to standing (caused by sudden low blood pressure) Lesser symptoms: Nausea Vomiting Rash resembling a sunburn, particularly on the palms of hands and soles of feet Muscle aches Confusion Headaches If you experience these symptoms, cease using a vaginal product and seek medical attention immediately. Treatment includes a high dose of antibiotics. Recent studies show that 100% cotton tampons potentially create a higher risk of TSS (versus synthetic/cotton blends tampons), though earlier studies showed they have a lower risk. So it's not cut and dry. When it comes to menstrual cups, medical grade silicone cups have a lower rate of Staph. Aureus growth. Most cups on the market these days are medical grade silicone, but it's important to check. Make sure you follow the recommended cleaning instructions when using a cup! TSS is not limited to using vaginal products. It can result from other means. About 80% of us make antibodies against Staph Aureus, so our bodies knock it out before becoming TSS. (47:12) Recommended menstrual products and brands Every woman is different so it's important to experiment and find the right fit for your cervix, comfort, and lifestyle! Stacy swears by this quiz: https://putacupinit.com/quiz/ Finding the right size cup for you is very important because if you're using a cup that doesn't fit you well, there's a risk of a prolapsed bladder, cervix, and/or uterus. If your cup feels weird in any way, it's the wrong size! If you find a cup doesn't work for you, your next best options are a natural sponge or an external product like reusable pads or period panties. "How long does a cup last?" For Stacy, one cup lasted 6 years. The stem broke. So it's a much more environmentally-friendly option! "I’m so intrigued but I can’t comprehend how you get it in and out, and it doesn’t spill?" Stacy says she's never had a problem with the cup spilling (except for that one time her cup fell in the toilet!) The cup is also the only product she's used that has an air tight seal so when you're swimming, it keeps everything where it should be. When inserting, you fold the edges of the cup and insert it with a twisting motion. It should naturally unfold as you're inserting. In terms of leakage, chances are incredibly slim that a cup of menstruation will spill all over you. However, if the cup overflows, a little leakage can occur. For removal, while sitting on a toilet, grab pinch the stem and squeeze the base of the cup to release the airtight seal. Then gently remove the cup. It should come out easily. Definitely practice this at home before attempting this in a public restroom. When in doubt, check out YouTube for "how to" videos. You don't have to remove the cup every time you use the bathroom. It's also more sterile! No external strings or material to absorb other body fluids. "Does it actually shorten your period?" and "Is there less blood?" Yes, it can shorten your period, and it can feel like there's less blood, but the uterine lining is still shedding the same amount. How heavy your period or how long it lasts really depends on hormones, stress, thyroid, etc. Tampons are a physical stressor so it could be changing the quality of your period. Fragrances, chemicals, and materials like plastics can also mess with period quality. "Is there a downside for the cup holding liquid inside that long?" The downside is just creating an environment for Staph. Aureus to grow, which can turn into TSS. But this is a slim chance. Companies do make wipes for cleaning your cup during the day, but Stacy believes that it's safer to just avoid removing your cup in public restrooms and therefore avoid exposing it to other potentially harmful bacteria. Stacy and Sarah recommend having two cups so you can sterilize one while using the other. Stacy sterilizes hers by running it through the dishwasher. "Cup versus soft disk?" Stacy doesn't have experience with this. And it didn't come up in Sarah's research for the show. Stacy is weary of them because they contain plastic. Do you use one? Go to Stacy's Instagram and/or Sarah's Instagram posts for this podcast episode and leave a comment about what you're using and why you love it. "Can menstrual cups be used safely with IUDs?" If your cup fits properly, it's not touching your cervix so it shouldn't be an issue (but check with your medical professional). "I have a 4th degree tear from a baby. Will a cup be comfortable?" You won't know until you try, but make sure you get a cup that fits. Stacy recommends a natural sponge or a period panty if the cup doesn't feel good. "I'm having a baby next month. What about post-partum?" Doctors recommend not inserting anything into your vagina for a period of time after giving birth due to risk of infection, so follow their advice! It's okay to use the pads they give you at the hospital after giving birth - do what you need to do! - but then find a safer pad option using the list above. Get your questions in! Born With... Ankyloglossia is also known as a tongue tie.  It is a result of a short frenulum.  This issue is easily corrected if it interferes with eating and talking. Macroglossia is a large tongue.  This is one of the identifiable characteristics of Down's Syndrome.  It is described as the tongue appears to be bigger than space in the mouth. Infected With... Strawberry tongue The tongue can appear extremely red and papillae are swollen to look like seeds on a strawberry.  This is a symptom of several conditions. Kawasaki Disease is a rare but serious childhood inflammatory disease.  Because this involves the blood vessels becoming inflamed, the blood vessels in the tongue are also affected. Scarlet Fever is caused by the same bacteria is strep throat.  The infection goes from just being strep throat to being scarlet fever when the bacteria toxins spread in the bloodstream and cause widespread symptoms. Toxic Shock Syndrome is when the bacteria called as Staph aureus (yes, this is the staph that lives on your skin and can cause wound infections) gets into the bloodstream.  This is a medical emergency and needs to be treated immediately. Hairy Tongue White hairy tongue appears as patches on the sides of the tongue.  It can happen when someone who is immunocompromised gets the Epstein-Barr Virus. (Epstein-Barr is a virus that causes mild childhood illness or a disease we know as Mono when teens and adults.) Black hairy tongue is a little more obscure with a few possibilities of causes. Smoking, excessive coffee or tea consumption, excessive alcohol consumption, or soft diet - inability to shed dead skin cells Antibiotic overuse - overgrowth of fungus or bacteria Overuse of peroxide-based mouthwash - oxidation Function Lost Motor Neuron Disease occurs in the later stages of ALS or Lou Gerig's Disease, when the nerves and muscles of the tongue for speech and swallowing become affected. About a year ago I came across a Canadian charitable organization called--Femme International. An NGO working in Kenya and Tanzania committed to advancing the rights of women and girls through targeted programs that focus on menstruation, sexual health, and feminine hygiene. Through education and the creation of a “Femme Kit” young women and girls are given the means to manage their periods safely and hygienically, central to the success of their “Femme Kit” is the menstrual cup. For many women and girls who live in the lowest economic bracket “having your period” is more than a nuisance. It can create economic strain, and in the most serious of situations prevent an individual from consistently participating in the regular routines of societal life. In Kenya, the average cost of a package of sanitary pads is $1 CAN. Pretty reasonable, right? Well, when you consider the average daily income of an unskilled labourer in Kenya is $1.50 CAN, this means that women must often choose between properly managing their periods or food and shelter. Often, women resort to other means: leaves, newspapers, rags, etc. which either do not work or lead to infections and discomfort. Due to the fact that some young women are unable to access appropriate menstrual products, girls in Kenya miss an average of 4.9 days of school a month--a direct result of their period. The menstrual cup or known by it’s various brand names:The Diva Cup, The MeLuna Cup, or the MoonCup is a medical grade silicone cup that is inserted into the vagina to collect menstrual fluid. They are anti-microbial, do not contain any harmful bleeches or chemicals, unlike the majority of pads and tampons, and there is no threat to Toxic Shock Syndrome. Depending on your flow you may keep the silicone cup inserted for up to 12 hours, and, lastly, if maintained properly one silicone cup’s life cycle could last up to ten years. This means that a young women in Kenya can attend an eight hour school day or go to work without worrying about having to find clean toilets. It means that all women, can save a tremendous amount of money over the long term by switching from disposable products to non-disposable products. It means that every woman can have a positive impact on the environment by completely erasing the garbage created by disposable pads and tampons. However, although the positive impact may be obvious for those in developing countries, who must deal with alternatives that are too expensive and a public infrastructure that is inadequate for their needs, to the average Westerner the change to something better is slow to come. In the United States, an estimated 12 billion pads and 7 billion tampons are thrown out annually. On average, women throw out 300 pounds of feminine hygiene related products in their lifetime. So, why the hesitation? If the option is out there, why aren’t we choosing it? I am going to be abrupt about this--My periods suck! I won’t be coy. For two days out of the five every month I kick back tylenol on the regular to relieve a pain that is intense and unforgiving. The pressure, the bloating, my vagina feels like it is on fire. The pain makes it impossible for me to hide my cycle, so I don’t. I have never missed work, but every time I stroll in and a co-worker asks, “How are you doing?” I tell them. “I am ill. So, if I grimace in pain or lean against a table know why and if you can have some sympathy than that is appreciated.” I suppose because the pain can be great that it has forced me to re-negotiate my relationship with my body. If you can barely feel it and it’s simply an annoyance then perhaps one can just shoo shoo it away. Shoo shoo the negativity, the grossness, and the shame. That’s how I was taught--to give it no mind. When I think about my menstrual cycle or menstrual cycles in general what comes to the foreground are little anecdotes that span my decades. The majority of these anecdotes are saddled with a deep sense of embarrassmen...

Learn how to decrease your risk for toxic shock syndrome.Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is caused by staph bacteria. It most commonly develops after surgeries and from tampon usage.Tampons provide a special environment that is conducive to staph bacterial growth. Tampons also change vaginal pH. The staph bacteria reproduce easily under these conditions.TSS symptoms are similar to the flu. Nausea, fever, abdominal cramping, diarrhea and a sunburn-type rash are indicators of TSS. Any of these signs should prompt a call to your physician. The longer you use a single tampon and the number of days each period requires tampons both increase your TSS risk. If you must use a tampon, wear it for 2-3 hours at most. Use the lightest absorbency you can. Wash your hands before and after application. Do not wear your tampon overnight. If you lose track of how long you've worn your tampon, set an alarm as a reminder.Tampon use is a convenience and a responsibility.Dr. Daliya Khuon discusses how to reduce your risk for toxic shock syndrome.
