In this episode of the podcast we talk to Alison Walker.Alison came to the UK from Malaysia to go to university. Rather than shying away from British culture, she threw herself right into it and joined a local London running club. That was the beginning of her love affair with running and the UK.Alison is a very humble person and suffers a great deal with what she describes in her own words as ‘imposter syndrome'Alison is a week away from her debut at The Spine Race. So we talk about her preparation for her biggest race yet. Her previous race experience and how she got into ultras. Alison may have only discovered trail running recently but she has already racked up podiums in 100 mile races, 24 hour track races and winning the Race Across Scotland. She has been tipped to be a contender for a podium place at this year's Spine Race.URS
After her daughter suffered a back injury, a colleague recommended reflexology and Ruth was amazed by the speed of her improvement in symptoms. After just a couple of sessions her pain had gone. And it didn't return. Ruth tells us that she had been looking for something new to learn, but each time she had enrolled on a course it had been cancelled. Her daughter journey piqued her interest, and this time when she enrolled on a level 5 reflexology course with Alison Walker it ran. After a studying reflexology Ruth realised that this had been what she was looking for and she wanted to make it her career. Personal events made her re-evaluate her work life balance and she took the plunge and became a full time reflexologist. Now Ruth not only practises reflexology, she now trains other practitioners in a level 5 qualification. This seems a fitting and natural complement to her previous career, meaning she gets to practise both her passions. Many of us as children dream of finding a treasure map and digging up gold and precious jewels. For some that longing never goes away. Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women from the UK and Canada who spend their free time using metal detectors to search for treasure. In November 2021, a British nurse called Elizabeth Bailey discovered a tiny gold book while out with her metal detector. She first thought it was from a charm bracelet but, engraved with two figures thought to be the patron saints of childbirth, it's believed the charm could have been given to a wealthy pregnant woman between 1280 and 1410, when it was illegal for anyone besides the nobility to own gold. Alison Walker uses her hobby of metal detecting to recover lost jewellery and keys for people around Ontario in Canada where she lives. Instead of taking a reward for finding precious belongings she asks that people 'pay-it-forward' to a breast cancer charity. She belongs to an international organisation called The Ring Finders and took up the pass-time 11 years ago after bidding for a metal detector in a charity auction.

Calderfornia with Alison Walker! Alison is a remarkable, talented runner who you will hear on this podcast is also very modest. You could easily listen thinking that Alison is an average mid pack runner but she holds the Malaysian women's 100km record, recently completed the 300km "Smog Graham Round" and has finished in the top 3 of a number of 100km+ ultra marathons. Native to Malaysia and having spent time living in London we talk about why Alison and her husband Matt moved to the Calder Valley. What this move means to her running and why she does not expect to ever look back! A lovely down to earth chat with this very talented lady. Enjoy! linktr.ee/ultraalison
Alison Walker was the first woman to report live on a football match for the BBC. That’s a significant moment looking back but it didn’t feel like it at the time for Alison – she was too busy focusing on doing a good job while navigating the hostilities of the male-dominated media pack. However, this achievement heralded an outstanding career in sports broadcasting that has included covering seven Olympic Games and compering the Commonwealth Games athletics events at Hampden Park in 2014. A self-confessed Hamilton Accies fan, Alison tells the story of her career with great humour and some wonderful anecdotes. But she also discusses why she is campaigning for close relatives to be able to visit their family members in care homes – her parents suffer from dementia and she hasn’t been able to give them a hug for 10 months. We also close with a song that Alison has co-written as part of the campaign. Recorded on 11 January 2021. www.allencomms.co.uk

We are Ali and Alison Walker, and we used to call Seattle, Washington our home. We met in 2004, married in 2006, and retired in 2018. After reaching Financial Independence we wanted a complete and total change from our career-focused lives. We decided that meant leaving our Seattle life behind and making travel our new lifestyle. By November of 2018 we had sold our home and car, let go of 99% of our belongings, and left Seattle to travel the world indefinitely.
