Today, we're setting up Sarah Cady. Sarah is a nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopist at a university, who also is a partial owner of a plant store. She recently read and loved The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter and The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix Harrow. She's a big fan of farmers market shopping on a Saturday morning, and ending the day with grilling and beers on the porch at home. She's a gemini who likes Classic books and could give an on the spot ted talk about superconducting magnets or grief. She's impressed by people who remember to send thank you notes, and loves both the Colin Firth and Matthew MacFadyen P&P. A quote from her survey is that “there is just something so comforting to me about Regency era lady problems.” Winning bookstore Garden District Book Shop in New Orleans Our picks Give Me Your Hand by Megan Abbott The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd Lone Women by Victor LaValle Griffin and Sabine by Nick Bantock Fellowship Point by Alice Elliott Dark Heartbreaker by Sarah MacLean

For the first time recording in the ... afternoon ... Hannah and Sam are perhaps more lucid than normal and have a lot of books to chat about after a brief sidebar on Reddit posting (Sam's getting tooled on). First up is "The Future," from Naomi Alderman, which is an important novel that people really need to read, a commentary on where we are and where we're going that Sam highly recommends. Why are we still using social media, again? Next up is "Starling House," by Alix Harrow, a piece of "horror-light" that took Hannah a bit to warm up to. Then we hear about Sam's new project taking out new books from the library, which he has already violated by going back in time to read the first book in Christopher Paolini's "Fractalverse" series, "To Sleep in a Sea of Stars," which is VERY long and has lots of scenes with people eating in space, but Sam generally liked as impressive new science fiction. Hannah's reading a different kind of book with stars in the title, Tommy Orange's new "Wandering Stars," which is a highly anticipated follow up to "There There" (a novel, not short stories, as Sam believed). It's another must-read, if not an easy read, a multi-generational look at the Native American experience in the United States that makes a nice pair with Jesmyn Ward's new "Let Us Descend." This is how you grapple with the horrors of our history.  Then we transition into "Lazy City," which Sam says is like a Gen Z "Bright Lights Big City," a look at the culture of people in Belfast, Ireland, in their 20s, with all the dating and partying you might imagine. It's bleak, but a great read for understanding "what's going on with the kids these days." Watch out, though, there are no quotation marks. But, wait, there's more! Hannah listened to Britney's memoir — read by Michelle Williams! It's amazing. But the people around Britney are despicable. And, finally, Sam sings the praises of "Of Boys and Men," an examination by Richard Reeves of why men are struggling in today's society, and why policymakers aren't doing anything about it.

Is it from loneliness, uncertainty for the future or just the unknown or are you in a good place and want to move forward with this person. We will have a separate episode on Necromancy at some point looking at historical rituals and tales! Summary: Today, Holly and Devin rave about books with elderly protagonists. They review how older characters open up books to touch on other themes beyond youthful searches for meaning. Themes of death, illness, health concerns unite both books, but so do themes of change, renewal, vigor, and fulfillment at any age. They end by agreeing that they want more books focusing on elderly protagonists and that it's a theme they're both drawn to.  Topics Discussed:   The Heart (2:24): Devin discussed Its Not All Downhill From Here by Terry McMillan, a book centered around a group of female friends as they explore how to make the most of their late 60s and grapple with relationship challenges, health concerns, and what it means to not give up in old age. Her key takeaways were:   While not a true romance novel, there are romantic elements threaded throughout the novel; these friends discuss love and sex, look for love, find love, break up, try online dating, and validate that you can crave intimacy and connection at any age. Told from the first-person perspective of Loretta “Lo” Curry, the reader gets a front-row seat into her white lies, her not-so-white lies, her opinions of her friends, and her grief, hope, despair, fear, and excitement through the novel. McMillan does a lot of work setting up what “downhill” would look like for this group of friends, covering health concerns, financial issues, family challenges, and despair at aging; the turning point doesn't come until 75% through the book, but the resolution is satisfying and meaningful.   The Dagger (21:03): Holly discussed The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, a book that follows a quartet of folks in a retirement community who gather once a week to discuss cold cases, until they land with a very warm case with a murder in their own community. Her key takeaways were:   This murder mystery feels at times cute, jaunty and warm but there are definite dark elements and a clear sense that, even though they're investigating the murder, any of the characters could be guilty or involved.  Osman creates a vibe where Louise Penny mysteries meet A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, with dark humor as well as moments of sudden depth (and death).  Ultimately, the mystery itself was a little convoluted and opaque, but the way Osman treats aging, grief, dementia, and meaning for these characters with care and humor.    Hot On the Shelf (35:57):   Holly: Violeta by Isabel Allende Devin: The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow   What's Making Our Hearts Race (41:09):   Holly: Binging Agatha Christie on audiobook  Devin: The 2022 Winter Olympics Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.  Keywords: Literature, Books, Reading, Bookish, Pop-culture, Romance, Mystery, Elderly, Elderly Protagonists, Its Not All Downhill From Here, Terry McMillan, The Thursday Murder Club, Richard Osman, Violeta, Isabel Allende, The Ten Thousand Doors of January, Alix Harrow, Agatha Christie, Olympics, 2022 Winter Olympics, Beijing, Old People, Murder

It is May, and with the new month comes a new meditation series! This series was loosely inspired by Alix E. Harrow's beautiful novel, The Once & Future Witches. This book, according to the NPR.org book review: Once upon a time, Alix Harrow wrote about three sisters. Also, suffragists, witching, folklore, flawed alliances, an alternate America, and women's work. She gave this second novel many gifts: charm, grace, and gorgeousness; feral wonder, clear vision, an ardent heart. She gave it history, awareness of injustice and will to survive it. And so it went into the world to seek its fortune, inviting readers to settle in; to sigh with the pleasure of finding a not too this, not too that, just right story. Within this magical novel, she writes of 3 things needed to perform a spell - The Words. The Will. & The Way. This got me thinking… what is needed to truly feel and discover the magic of meditation? Not the baseline “I'm watching my thoughts, and there sure are a lot of them.” kind of meditation. Although that has true value, to be sure. No, I'm talking about the kind of meditation where you feel yourself drop into something wholly different than those curious thoughts in your head. A space? A universe? Something with true color, texture, feeling, maybe words, maybe visions, maybe just truths suddenly known. This is the type of meditation that has you running towards your meditation cushion each day. And we find it through the words we say, a very peculiar type of will, and a way that has been handed down for generations. In today's talk and meditation, we explore the words. What are the words that we say to deepen a meditation practice? It turns out that they aren't just any words, but a vow and commitment we make to support our highest truth. A Sankalpa. Ready to try your hand at magic? Let's meditate. If you enjoyed today's episode, please consider making a one-time or monthly donation to support the growth of this labor of love. I can always count on my husband, a huge sci-fi and fantasy reader to keep me up to date with some of the newest and most exciting authors in that genre. And when one of them is from our home state of Kentucky, you can be doubly sure Carrie and I will quickly ask for an interview. Our guest this week, Ashley Blooms, grew up in rural Kentucky, was a John Grisham Writing Fellow at the University of Mississippi and worked for Tor.com, an online magazine that published a wide range of sci- fi/fantasy short stories, commentary, and pop culture. Her debut novel, Every Bone a Prayer, was published last month, has been recommended by NPR and Buzzfeed and has received praise from some of my favorite authors like Silas House and Alix Harrow. Ashley wants to make a space in Appalachian literature for more fantastical stories and not only the literary realism that is usually that trademark of the subgenre. As a survivor of trauma and abuse in her own life, Ashley has created the 10-year-old protagonist, Misty, with unique sensory gifts that help explain what trauma feels like, how it changes a person, and how to move forward beyond it. Ashley talks to us about why the Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine made her want to tell stories of her own, how she uses trigger warnings to give control back to the reader, and why she doesn't categorize her book as magical realism even though it combines reality with fantastical elements. Books Mentioned in this Episode: 1- Goosebumps series by R. L.
