In Episode 146, Gen and Jette talk about their most recent book club pick—Starling House by Alix E. Harrow. We are so here for the spooky houses and gothic vibes!Show NotesEleanor Starling was giving Mark Ryden and Margaret Keane vibes.Starling House is a portal fantasy of sorts, as is Harrow's debut novel, The Ten Thousand Doors of January. She also wrote a short story called "A Witch's Guide to Escape: A Practical Compendium of Portal Fantasies." Our next book club pick is The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia MorenoGarcia. It's based on H.G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau. So we're sticking with the gothic, spooky vibes. We loved Mexican Gothic and we're sure this one is going to be great! We'll be discussing it first thing in July.We may also have to watch the 1996 film, The Island of Doctor Moreau, starring Val Kilmer, Marlon Brando, and Fairuza Balk, among others. Literary agent Sarah Landis joins me for a deep dive into the Speculative Fiction / Fantasy genre. Sarah breaks down these terms, shares popular books in these genres, and discusses the trends she's seeing in the publishing industry. Also, Sarah shares both her book recommendations and her go-to books for those looking to dive into these genres! This post contains affiliate links through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights Differentiating between genres: Fantasy, Speculative Fiction, Sci-Fi, Dystopian, Post-Apocalyptic, Climate Fiction. The genres that scare publishers and the toughest genre to define! The sub-genres of fantasy: High / Epic, Grounded, and Historical. How the term ‘Speculative' is actually a broader umbrella term. The trends and performance in publishing for Speculative Fiction and Fantasy. Why many fantasy books are written as a series. How the “Harry Potter” generation seems to be shaping both readers and authors. Sarah's go-to recommendations for those new to these genres! Summary: Today, Holly and Devin rave about books with elderly protagonists. They review how older characters open up books to touch on other themes beyond youthful searches for meaning. Themes of death, illness, health concerns unite both books, but so do themes of change, renewal, vigor, and fulfillment at any age. They end by agreeing that they want more books focusing on elderly protagonists and that it's a theme they're both drawn to. Topics Discussed: The Heart (2:24): Devin discussed Its Not All Downhill From Here by Terry McMillan, a book centered around a group of female friends as they explore how to make the most of their late 60s and grapple with relationship challenges, health concerns, and what it means to not give up in old age. Her key takeaways were: While not a true romance novel, there are romantic elements threaded throughout the novel; these friends discuss love and sex, look for love, find love, break up, try online dating, and validate that you can crave intimacy and connection at any age. Told from the first-person perspective of Loretta “Lo” Curry, the reader gets a front-row seat into her white lies, her not-so-white lies, her opinions of her friends, and her grief, hope, despair, fear, and excitement through the novel. McMillan does a lot of work setting up what “downhill” would look like for this group of friends, covering health concerns, financial issues, family challenges, and despair at aging; the turning point doesn't come until 75% through the book, but the resolution is satisfying and meaningful. The Dagger (21:03): Holly discussed The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, a book that follows a quartet of folks in a retirement community who gather once a week to discuss cold cases, until they land with a very warm case with a murder in their own community. Her key takeaways were: This murder mystery feels at times cute, jaunty and warm but there are definite dark elements and a clear sense that, even though they're investigating the murder, any of the characters could be guilty or involved. Osman creates a vibe where Louise Penny mysteries meet A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, with dark humor as well as moments of sudden depth (and death). Ultimately, the mystery itself was a little convoluted and opaque, but the way Osman treats aging, grief, dementia, and meaning for these characters with care and humor. Hot On the Shelf (35:57): Holly: Violeta by Isabel Allende Devin: The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow What's Making Our Hearts Race (41:09): Holly: Binging Agatha Christie on audiobook Devin: The 2022 Winter Olympics Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience. Continuing on from last week's episode, Jules and Madeleine pick up the thread on how parents affect who a person grows to be, and how this can be utilised in character development in fiction. On the slab this week - Tangled, October Daye series by Seanan McGuire, Steven Universe, The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alex Harrow and many more. Part two of a two part episode. Both in real life and in fiction, parental figures are the most important early relationship any of us form. Even by dint of being entirely absent, parents will affect who a character grows to be. In this week's episode we talk about Strange! Both the strange summer book choices Jerrica made and the actual Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. We admit even our window of reading this week was tight, so if you haven't finished, listen along to Lia's awesome summary that is nearly as long as the book. Kidding, that's impossible. Afterwards, learn how Jerrica got through the book with the help of google in a mini game called Name that Word. We introduce the next book, The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. For the Wolf: By Hannah Whitten Website: https://gobookmart.com “Eerie, earthy to its bones, and rife with elder magic. Hannah Whitten is one to watch.”―Anna Bright, author of The Beholder "Atmospheric, folkloric, and half-familiar. If you ever wished Beauty and the Beast had more eldritch forest monsters and political machinations, this is the romance for you."―Alix E. Harrow, author of The Ten Thousand Doors of January "Whitten weaves a captivating tale in this debut, in which even secondary characters come to feel like old friends. The novel seamlessly blends "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Beauty and the Beast" into an un-put-down-able fairy tale that traces the boundaries of duty, love, and loss. A masterful debut from a must-read new voice in fantasy." ―Kirkus "Whitten debuts with a dark, dazzling reimagining of 'Little Red Riding Hood'... Whitten lovingly weaves in elements from other fairy tales, including 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Snow White,' while crafting a story that is all her own. With clever, immersive prose and a subtle touch of horror, this is sure to enchant."―Publishers Weekly "This hauntingly beautiful, fractured retelling of Little Red Riding Hood is dark, emotional, and filled with tense action. Whitten's debut is epic and enthralling."―Library Journal --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

We'll be here for you when you finish! Quotes “The will to be polite, to maintain civility and normalcy, is fearfully strong. I wonder sometimes how much evil is permitted to run unchecked simply because it would be rude to interrupt it.” The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow More Discussion Book Marketing: If you have a book like this with complicated secrets that you can't give away in the jacket copy - how do you convince other people to read it? How much do we trust cover blurbs? Do we need cover blurbs or can author twitter substitute for that in helping us find books we would love from other author's recommendations? Where is reader twitter and how do we decide which recommendations to trust? How does "word of mouth" work? Learning: How does learning work outside of academia? Is learning by doing enough? Is learning in the evaluation and reflection even when it seems intuitive? Theme: This book has a clear one, but it doesn't beat us over the head with it. Re-Reading: Lissa says yes. Because reasons that would be spoilers. And spoilers are in the podcast, not here.
