Matt Crawford speaks with author Stephen R. Platt about his book, The Raider: The Untold Story of a Renegade Marine and the Birth of U.S Special Forces in World War II.  In this compelling episode, historian Stephen R. Platt joins us to discuss his latest book, The Raider, a powerful chronicle of Evans Carlson—the controversial, visionary Marine officer who broke ranks with military convention during World War II to lead one of the first elite units in U.S. history. We explore Carlson's radical leadership philosophy, his time with Mao Zedong in China, and how his story shaped the birth of what would become modern American Special Forces. Platt shares how this little-known chapter of WWII history challenges our assumptions about heroism, leadership, and the cost of innovation in the military.

While recent attention has focused on the Houthi rebel movement in Yemen, BBC correspondent Nawal Al-Maghafi investigates a different, hidden aspect of the country's long civil war. The conflict in Yemen began in 2014. It has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands and created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. In 2015, a coalition formed by the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia invaded Yemen. Its stated aim was to return the elected government to power, and to fight terrorism. However, Nawal Al-Maghafi , from BBC Arabic Investigations has found evidence that the UAE has been funding a method of covert warfare in southern Yemen – assassinating those who have spoken out against the UAE's operations in the country. Assassinations were initially carried out by a band of former American Special Forces operatives turned mercenaries, who were paid by the UAE. These extra-judicial killings, conducted in the name of counterterrorism, continue to this day. The UAE denies the allegations.

My guest today is Baktash Ahadi. Baktash is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, speaker, facilitator, and human rights activist. Baktash is a returning guest and if you have not yet listened to my first conversation with him, I highly recommend taking time to listen to Episode 84, where Baktash shared pieces of his and his family's story of escaping Afghanistan as refugees when he was just a baby, getting resettled as a young boy in Carlisle Pennsylvania, and how that journey has impacted his life. I asked Baktash if he would come back to talk specifically about the film, Retrograde, of which he is an Executive Producer.  Retrograde tells the story of the American withdraw from Afghanistan in 2021.  Sponsored by National Geographic, what started with the intention of telling the story of the American Green Berets who served in Afghanistan, pivoted in May of 2021, when President Biden announced the withdraw of American troops, which built up to the major withdrawal and the takeover of the Afghan government by the Taliban on August 15, 2021. From Wikipedia: “Retrograde is a 2022 American documentary film that covers events that took place during the final nine months of the United States' 20-year war in Afghanistan. The film includes actions taken by the last American Special Forces units stationed there, Sami Sadat, a young Afghan general and his troops defending their country, and a chaotic exodus of its civilians, desperate to flee a country that will once again be controlled by the Taliban.” The footage that was captured in the making of this film is incredible, to say the least.  As I watched, I often was wondering, “how did they get this footage?”  So, that is among many other aspects that Baktash tells us about today. We also talk about what we as individuals can do today to make a positive difference in the continued story of Afghan refugees and Veterans of the war.   Retrograde is available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.  It is produced by Matthew Heineman and Caitlin McNally.  More of Baktash's work can be found at baktashahadi.org.Make Life Less Difficult

25NOV2001: Johnny 'Mike' Spann was working in the CIA when al-Qaeda terrorists conducted their attacks on September 11, 2001. Before long, Spann, a prior Marine, found himself on the ground in Afghanistan, searching for these killers. Spann was one of the first Americans on the ground in Afghanistan and immediately set about tying in with local forces from the Northern Alliance. Spann focused on building relationships with local military leaders, specifically General Dostum, in preparation for the arrival of American Special Forces units that would hopefully turn the tide in the fight against the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Spann helped coordinate resources and relayed critical intelligence from the front lines as Dostum and his US advisors took the critical city of Mazar-i-Sharif in early November. As the first major victory over the Taliban, this battle saw quite a few enemy fighters offer to surrender. Of the new prisoners, Spann and his team pulled aside nearly 600 with suspected ties to al-Qaeda for further questioning to be done at a fortress known as Qala-i-Jangi. The prisoners were quickly moved during the night and placed in a cellar to be interrogated the following morning by Spann and his colleague. However, in the chaos, many prisoners were able to sneak weapons in with them. The following day, as Spann worked through the prisoners, asking where they were from, why they were in Afghanistan and more, shots rang out. The armed prisoners were staging an uprising and Spann was caught right in the middle. Fighting for his life, Spann emptied his pistol and rifle at close range before engaging dozens of al-Qaeda fighters in hand to hand combat. Overwhelmed and outnumbered, Spann was quickly killed, the first American killed in combat during the war in Afghanistan. The Northern Alliance guards locked down the fort and as US and British special operators arrived on scene, the retaking of the fort began. After a few days, with the help of American airpower, only a few dozen holdouts remained holed up in a cellar. General Dostum ordered the cellar flooded with cold water, forcing their final surrender. In all, barely 80 of the initial 600+ prisoners would survive the uprising.

Anderson Produced by Lawrence Kasanoff Based on Mortal Kombat by Midway Games Starring Christopher Lambert as Raiden, god of thunder and protector of Earthrealm who guides the warriors on their journey. He desires to aid the heroes in defending Earthrealm, but as he himself is not mortal, he is not permitted to participate in the tournament and may only advise them and act to prevent cheating. Robin Shou as Liu Kang, a former Shaolin monk, who enters the tournament to avenge his brother's death. He is also Kitana's love interest and among the first who notice her sympathy towards Earthrealm. As in most of the games in the Mortal Kombat series, Liu Kang is the main protagonist. This was Shou's second American film, as his last American role was in 1990, for the made-for-television film Forbidden Nights. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung, a powerful, sadistic and treacherous demon sorcerer, he is the film's main antagonist who killed Liu Kang's brother Chan. Tagawa was the filmmakers' first and only choice for the role; he was instantly selected after he came to his audition in costume, and read his lines while standing on a chair. Linden Ashby as Johnny Cage, a Hollywood superstar that enters the tournament to prove to the world that his skills are for real. He is also Sonya's love interest. Ashby trained in karate and tae kwon do especially for this film. Despite the intensity of the fight scenes coupled with the actors performing most of their own stunts, on-set injuries were surprisingly minimal; the only notable occurrence was a mildly bruised kidney Ashby suffered while shooting Cage's fight scene with Scorpion. Bridgette Wilson as Sonya Blade, an American Special Forces officer from Austin, Texas who's in hot pursuit of Kano, the criminal who killed her partner. She is also Johnny's love interest. Cameron Diaz was originally set to play Sonya, but she broke her wrist during a martial arts training session prior to shooting and was replaced by Wilson, who was jokingly nicknamed "RoboBabe" during production by director Paul W. S. Anderson. Wilson performed all her own stunts, including fight scenes. Release Date: August 18, 1995 Budget: 18 Million Box Office: 122.1 Million

The president of the world's most powerful democracy doesn't seem to actually like democracy

Yochi, Zack, and special guest Loren DeJonge Schulman discuss President Trump's trip to Asia, where his warm feelings for foreign autocrats and refusal to discuss human rights abuses raise real questions about whether the leader of the world's biggest democracy actually cares much about democracy. Those concerns are magnified by Trump's ongoing calls for a criminal prosecution of Hillary Clinton, a move usually relegated to banana republics, not the US. On Elsewhere, they turn to one of the strangest US military scandals in memory: growing evidence that members of the elite Seal Team 6 killed an American Special Forces soldier who'd found evidence they were embezzling money. Yochi confesses to being a closet video game addict, Zack shares some strong feelings about Henry Kissinger, and Loren battles a Sudafed-fueled high.  Learn more about your ad choices. Hugh Hewitt: With Honor To Our Troops Upon The Defeat Of Isis

The defeat of ISIS in its self-proclaimed capital of Raqqa—and its self-proclaimed caliphate—is a huge victory for the West and for the U.S.-backed forces that cleared that Syrian city of its remaining ISIS killers. Those self-proclaimed martyrs surrendered, by the way, refusing to fight to the death as ISIS propaganda had always proclaimed they would. The Syrian civil war continues and its ghastly toll continues to rise, of course—as does the war against ISIS. And not just in Syria and Iraq, but around the world as the death of five members of American Special Forces in Niger in October show—the sacrifice of the American military of the highest sort. Honor must be paid to their heroism and to the families of the fallen. Part of that honor is pausing to note that they and their brothers and sisters in arms are winning – that they are actually driving back radical Islamist terror. Congressman Mike Gallagher noted earlier this week, “that was unthinkable even a year ago under the tactics employed by the Obama administration.” We salute the liberators of Raqqa and the American Special Forces who assisted them.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome Renegade Nation it’s me Naughty Nicole and it’s time for another Renegade Review. And this time around, well we’re starting a whole new season of new shows and I’m going to try and review as many as a I can without wanting to slit my own wrists, so this time around, we’re starting with a little drama and a little funny. We’ll look at NBC’s The Brave and CBS’s Young Sheldon to whet our appetites for all the new and exciting shows….yep, that’s some serious badass sarcasm, in case you were wondering. So to start off our little roller coaster I’d like to share with you the explanation of the genesis for the military drama the Brave given by its series creator Dean Georgaris which will leave you with as much wanting as watching the first episode did for me. He didn’t invoke a strategic genius of Sgt Major Jonas Blane ala The Unit or even the war-is-hell mentality of Capt Benjamin Hawkeye Pierce ala MASH but instead the worst possible choices made by one Walter White. Where he states after watching documentaries about American Special Forces teams was impressed with their ingenuity and resiliency. He would read story after story and compare them to episodes of Breaking Bad where a small simple decision would lead to all these complications. This basic concept – where men and women who execute undercover, elite missions all over the world would often have to innovate on the fly when plans fall apart - became the Brave, a fictional paramilitary unit that works all over the globe, using the players’ intelligence, weapons knowledge, language prowess and cultural skills to set bad situations right. Meanwhile, back in the United States, a group of analysts provides real-time backup and much-needed technical support to the unit in the field.
