In the opening act of the new year we discuss many layers of sports stardom. To narrow it down as a group we were fascinated by the notion when does an athlete becomes a Demigod. What does that even mean in the sporting universe? Does this happen in some societies more than others? Does this happen more in team sports compared to individual sports? Is glamour part of the demigod status equation? What happens to a fallen Demigod? Host Saqib Ali is joined by Kandarp Mehta and Andrew Burton to discuss this topic at length. Kandarp is a return guest who is an avid cricket fan. Andrew is a regular voice on the Tennis with an accent podcast. It was an interesting discussion without any concrete conclusion given the vast nature of the topic. Both Kandarp and Andrew came prepared with examples spanning across different sports and cultures. Our podcast spans the world to learn about the men and women who serve their countries, and we pride ourselves on showcasing senior leaders of allied militaries. This episode continues that trend.Joining us is Group Captain Andrew Burton, the Deputy Commandant of the U.K. Air & Space Warfare Centre which is located at RAF Waddington. The Air & Space Warfare Centre is the organization responsible for planning and hosting Exercise Cobra Warrior, a large scale exercise that happens twice a year (spring and autumn), with each serial running for approximately 3 weeks. Our chat occurred late last year after the Cobra Warrior 2022 autumn serial, which had participants from the U.K., the United States, Germany and Italy; and it was the first time the Royal Air Force used the innovative SPEAR software. We are bringing this discussion to you now because we are on the heels of the 2023 autumn serial of Exercise Cobra Warrior (23-2), which includes a first time participant with the Royal Canadian Air Force sending seven CF-18 fighters, and one CC-150 Polaris Air refueling tanker. After arriving in the UK, the Canadian aircraft were supported by a Royal Air Force Voyager multi-role tanker transport aircraft, otherwise known as the A330 MRTT. That is the same type of aircraft that Canada has selected for its Strategic Tanker Transport Capability (STTC) project, so the exercise has already delivered great training value even though it has not officially started.Exercise Cobra Warrior is a large force multinational and multi-domain tactics development exercise. Common serials within the exercise include Offensive Counter Air; Defensive Counter Air; Joint Personnel Recovery; and support of land forces. You'll hear all about the exercise from Group Captain Burton, who said the ultimate goal is to develop it into the "Red Flag of Europe."We thank Group Captain Burton for his time and insight into this impressive exercise.Go Bold!

In today's episode, we welcome Andrew Burton back as our guest co-host and delve into a thought-provoking question: Why do people often struggle to be proactive and lean towards reactive behaviour? We explore the allure of immediate problem-solving, the satisfaction it brings, and the time constraints and competing priorities that hinder proactive actions. Throughout our conversation, we emphasise the importance of shifting our mindset to prioritise proactive behaviour and investing upfront to prevent losses in the long run.We introduce the "Red, Green, and Blue Money" concept to encourage proactive decision-making. By embracing the blue zone and recognising the value of proactive actions, we can shift our perspective and realise that being proactive doesn't always require significant resources or effort.Throughout the episode, we share practical examples and stories to illustrate the power of being proactive. We discuss the importance of creating a safe space for open communication and the value of small changes in workshop facilitation or team interactions. We aim to inspire a proactive mindset that leads to more meaningful outcomes and a greater sense of personal and professional growth.Click

Co-host: Andrew Burton joins Karin this week instead of Nuala, who is offshore at the time of this recording with limited internet. Andrew has worked with clients from the energy, construction, finance, legal and healthcare sectors.Vastly experienced senior manager, recruiter, facilitator, presenter and coach. He has been responsible for the project management, development and delivery of staff development and recruitment programmes in the UK, Europe and Africa. These projects have, in the main, focused on leaders, leadership, culture change and safety. In this episode, co-hosts Karin and Andrew discuss the importance of safety culture and the role of leaders in creating a positive vibe within their organisation. They explore how the pandemic forced businesses to pivot their strategies and embrace virtual platforms like Howspace, providing a safe and inclusive space for quieter individuals to participate and engage in group conversations. The conversation highlights the need for leaders to give permission and respect different opinions, thoughts, and ideas and tap into the workforce's knowledge and wisdom. By allowing everyone to contribute, organisations can create a co-created and unique culture sustained over time.Metaphors are a powerful tool for bringing different perspectives and getting people to talk about how things make them feel rather than just what needs to be done. Using a simple four-letter word like 'vibe' can significantly impact how people think and feel about their organisation's safety culture. The episode concludes with a key takeaway for organisations and leaders: giving space for people to think, learn, and contribute is essential for building psychological safety within a team or organisation. Leaders should allow everyone to speak out in their way, regardless of their position. By doing so, organisations can create a safety culture that supports the well-being and success of all team members.Connect with Andrew Burton at www.dinerinthedesert.com or  on LinkedInClick

Andrew Burton joins Matt Zemek on this episode to talk about Carlos Alcaraz's arrival to the big league of tennis. Alcaraz won his second masters 1000 title of the season and announced himself as one of the big favorites for Roland Garros. While doing so he went through Nadal and Djokovic in a space of two days - making him the first player to achieve that feat on clay. The duo also talks about Sascha Zverev who was clearly outplayed by the young Spaniard in the title match on Sunday. The conversation transitions into Ons Jabeur's maiden title at the 1000 level as she continues her evolution as a top contender on the WTA tour. Where does this win place Jabeur on the favorites list for the clay major? Last but not the least on the topics list is the horrific scheduling of the Madrid event which is increasingly becoming infamous for sidelining the women's event by giving them unfavorable time slots. Every week Father Michael Pfleger takes to social media to share the number of people killed over the past few days in his city, Chicago. The numbers are almost always in double figures and many of the dead are young African-American men shot on the streets that surround his church, St Sabina’s, in the almost entirely black suburb of Auburn-Gresham. Rajini Vaidyanathan meets Father Pfleger after Sunday Mass, to explore with him why he has devoted his life’s work to trying to rid Auburn-Gresham of gun crime. Whilst the vast majority of this congregation is African American, Father Pfleger is white. Meeting with his parishioners Rajini discovers how personal his crusade has become. General Ware, a young man recently out of prison describes how Father Mike took him in after he found him wandering the streets late at night. Mothers Annette Nance Holt and Pam Bosley describe how Father Mike help them to find their faith again after the tragic loss of their teenage sons, both shot and killed. Father Mike shares how he has personally been affected by guns, his adopted son Jarvis shot just yards from his church door. While many praise the work of Father Pfleger, there are others who argue some of it is cosmetic and that real change must come from within the black community itself. Maze Jackson discusses Father Mike’s role within the community and whether change can be sustained. The Radical Disciple was presented by Rajini Vaidyanathan and produced by David McGuire and Claire Press Photo credit: Andrew Burton
