This episode was originally released on August 18th, 2018. The Sugars have been thinking about what it means to say goodbye and let go. In this first episode of our two-part series on moving on, the Sugars and Claire Bidwell Smith answer two letters from people struggling to move past their grief after the death of their loved ones. The first letter comes from a woman who recently discovered that her best childhood friend died by suicide. In the wake of the news, she spent hours pouring over letters from her friend, and realized that there were signs of trouble early in life. Now she's haunted by the fact that she failed to intervene years ago. “I keep ruminating on how Alejandra might have killed herself and where she was when she did it,” she writes. “I feel so much guilt from my complacency.” A second letter writer, who calls herself “Wracked by Guilt,” feels similarly about the death of her mother. “How do I get over the sickening feeling that I played a role in my mom's death?” she asks. “How is it possible for me to stop trying to place blame and simply accept the situation?” Claire Bidwell Smith is a licensed therapist specializing in grief, and the author of several books, including “The Rules of Inheritance.” She writes and speaks about grief regularly, and offers online grief support in addition to her private practice. Her new book, “Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief,” will be released on Sept. 25th.

Grief, in its myriad of forms, touches us all at some point in our lives. And when it comes, it can often bring along an uninvited guest: anxiety. In this Language of Love Conversation, I talk with author and grief therapist Claire Bidwell Smith. When Claire was in her early twenties, she lost her parents, which deeply impacted her life. After her she began having panic attacks, Claire decided to learn more about grief-related anxiety. In fact, we now know that the kind of anxiety experienced with grief is a very unique sort.    In this conversation, Claire and I unpack:  Grief-related anxiety, its unique manifestations, and how it differs from typical anxiety  The different ways different cultures create space for grief  Why it is important to allow oneself to fully experience and release emotions in the grieving process The transformative nature of grief and the ways it can impact on every aspect of a person's being Different kinds of losses and their ability to change us and lead to a pared-down version of ourselves The importance of being present for someone in their pain without needing to have all the right words or solutions How to maintain a strong connection to loved ones who have passed away and find ways to honor their memory If you or someone you love is going through grief right now, or you've been there before, you're going to find this conversation really eye-opening. So, let's dive in! Remember to check out Claire Bidwell Smith's website to learn more about her work, especially her online support group retreats and podcast. Claire Bidwell Smith is a licensed therapist specializing in grief and the author of three books of nonfiction, most recently ANXIETY: The Missing Stage of Grief. Our discussion with Claire focused on how a crisis is unique in its ability to generate grief, as well as anger and pain and anxiety. We talk about common problems that surface from not being able to grieve during the crisis in the same ways we would have traditionally. ENCORE EPISODE - originally published December 18, 2019 I had such a great discussion with Claire Bidwell Smith for this episode. Claire is a therapist and is the author of three books on grief, including her most recent, “Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief.” Anxiety is a topic I hear about a lot from widowed parents, either in relation to themselves or their kids, so it was really great to have Claire on the show to discuss this. Some topics Claire and I discuss include: How she started having anxiety and panic attacks around the time her mom died, and no one connected it to her grief; What anxiety is, and what are some symptoms; Why it's important to work through your grief in order to tackle your anxiety; If you're stifling your grief, it's likely to manifest in anxiety; Grief-related anxiety can be present right away or many years out from loss; Kids who lost a parent often have fear of additional loss; How guilt and regret contribute to anxiety after loss, and ways to process these feelings; Sometimes people hold onto the guilt as a way of holding onto the person; Finding other ways to hold onto the person's memory so you can let go of the guilt; Why writing is an important tool for processing grief, and tips for doing this; and Why telling our story of loss is important. I hope you enjoy my discussion with Claire Bidwell Smith.
