Authors of “What To Do When I'm Gone” and “What to Do When You Get Dumped”, a mother-daughter team, share their mothers' lessons. Suzy Hopkins is a former newspaper reporter and magazine publisher. Her daughter Hallie Bateman is a freelance writer and illustrator based in Los Angeles whose work has been published by The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Awl and others. Suzy talks about her mother, a soft-spoken librarian, and mother of six, who suffered domestic abuse and managed to leave the marriage after 30 years - only after she found out her husband had a mistress. We learn about leaving the moment somebody lifts a hand to you; about asking for help; talking about elephants in the room; and knowing what you have the right to expect from a relationship. While Suzy learned what not to follow, Hallie learned from Suzy's example: how important it is to talk about everything; the power of unconditional love; and turning the sense of discovery and question-asking into art. Suzy also talks about recovering from grief after her husband or 30 years surprisingly asked for a divorce, a process which took four years, during which she wrote highly inspiring and comforting “What to do When You Get Dumped”. As the first epiosde for our summer 2024 replay, I'd like to share with you episode 17, in which I shared the most important lessons I learned from my mama Jagoda Kaloper. As I just turned 50 and shared with you 50 lessons I've learned in 50 years, I thought it might be interesting to hear which of these I've learned from my own mother.  My incredible mama Jagoda ("strawberry" in Croatian - thus the podcast design) was a celebrated actress and visual artist - but more importantly, she was a big "mensch" and an incredible (yet definitely not perfect) mama. Losing her in 2016 was the reason I started this podcast. I share the most important lessons I've learned from her about: passionately loving life; leaving a mark; being your own source of happiness; ageing gracefully; having it all by taking one step at the time; and being present and connected. Psychotherapist, coach and consultant, author of “Reinventing Supermom”, co-host of “Motherhood Uncut” podcast, and founder of “Parent and Family wellness Center”, Kate Kripke, talks about her family legacy of strong and successful women. Kate's great-great aunt Margaret Fuller was a pioneer in suffrage, the first American female war correspondent and the author of the first major feminist book in United States. Her mother Margaret was a groundbreaking lawyer, a leading expert in mediation and arbitration in New York in the ‘70s, who kept breaking glass ceilings. Kate tells us how her mother ran herself to the ground to achieve great things and be loved and accepted, never learning to give herself acceptance and self-love. We learn from her that as women, we can do and be anything we want to be; to give our children unconditional love by accepting all of their sides; and to be gentle with yourself, and question what is worth your self-sacrifice. Kate speaks about accepting that you are enough, and don't need to be perfect; about a definition of “fierce”, which we concluded is a definition of “female”; and about anxieties of high-achieving mothers.   To learn more about Kate and her work, please visit her website.
