About the Author: Pema Chödrön, born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown in New York City in 1936, is one of the most influential spiritual teachers in the West. A former teacher and wife, her life transformed after a series of personal challenges, including a painful divorce, which led her to explore Tibetan Buddhism. She became a student of Lama Chime Rinpoche in the French Alps and was later ordained as a Buddhist nun in London by the Sixteenth Karmapa. Under the guidance of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, she deepened her practice and teaching. Pema is the director emeritus of Gampo Abbey, the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery for Westerners, in Nova Scotia, Canada. She is a prolific author, known for works like When Things Fall Apart and The Places That Scare You, which explore mindfulness, compassion, and resilience. Her teachings emphasize finding liberation through vulnerability and embracing life's challenges as opportunities for growth. About the Book: In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön invites readers to explore the Tibetan Buddhist teachings on the bardo, the transitional state between death and rebirth. As a side note, Buddhism embraces the concept of reincarnation. These teachings highlight how the impermanent nature of life mirrors the bardo experience and how the way we live daily reflects how we will face life's ultimate transition—death. In essence, she's saying that the gap between birth and death is what we call life. She contends that by cultivating mindfulness, compassion, and acceptance of birth, life and death, we can navigate the uncertainties of life and death with a calm state of grace and wisdom. My personal take on this topic? I think it's important in some way to acknowledge and accept the reality of death in order to live your life fully in preparation for it. Make Sense? This is my most potent + vulnerable solo podcast so far. Period. I take my personal journey from the year to share about a very universal Buddhist Spiritual lesson... that our suffering comes from our attachment. Some snapshots from the episode: - I explore how to source power in a space of total helplessness. - I dive into my relationship to "I Don't Know" and how my partner saying this used to DRIVE ME NUTS - and how I've landed on a deep love affair of "I don't know". - When is "control freak" a positive thing? - I read passages from "When Things Fall Apart" - I cry - I talk about my first trip to a Palestinian Refugee Camp + how it changed my life. - I talk about the moment I hit a financial milestone in my business and what happened next... So brew a cup of tea, pour a glass of wine, make yourself a mocktail and let's hang. — To get on the waitlist for the event with Chris: https://tinyurl.com/chrisnadiawaitlist -- For access to my self-study page, head to: http://nadiamunla.com/selfstudy Use code: PODCASTLOVE to get 50% off any of my digital products — To connect with me on IG: @nadiamunla For coaching/teaching/speaking inquiries: Email: info@nadiamunla.com

Dealing with criticism, disappointment, and failure is never fun, but it's especially tricky when it comes to creative work. This week, I'm joined by illustrator Grace Miceli (aka @artbabygirl) to discuss tools and practices for working through those feelings and developing a resilient mindset. In addition to her work as an illustrator, Grace is currently in graduate school to become a Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Creative Arts Therapist, so I knew she would be the perfect person to talk to about the intersection of art and emotion. In our conversation, she describes her decade-long journey with learning how to bounce back from failure and reframe those experiences as opportunities for learning and growth. In the Tibetan Buddhist practice of Tonglen, “taking and sending,” you visualize taking in the pain of another on the in-breath and sending out healing energy on the out-breath. The process deepens your heart, widens your circle of compassion, and frees you from the mire of pity. You cultivate love, and begin to access the open dimension of your being. This meditation emulates the style of Tonglen taught by Pema Chödrön.11hz alpha wave music by Nature's Eye.Photo by Lahiru SupunchandraTess on Insight TimerTess on YouTubeTess's novels: https://tesscallahan.com/

When things fall apart, Tibetan Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön teaches us how to find stability. This meditation, based on one offered in her audiobook "Pure Meditation," helps you to stabilize your mind while fostering a friendly attitude toward yourself. We use breath, posture, and mindful awareness to infuse strength and stability into life's most challenging moments. I highly recommend her books. From the bestselling author of When Things Fall Apart, an open-hearted call for human connection, compassion, and learning to love the world just as it is during these most challenging times. In her first new book of spiritual teachings in over seven years, Pema Chödrön offers a combination of wisdom, heartfelt reflections, and the signature mix of humor and insight that have made her a beloved figure to turn to during times of change. In an increasingly polarized world, Pema shows us how to strengthen our abilities to find common ground, even when we disagree, and influence our environment in positive ways. Sharing never-before told personal stories from her remarkable life, simple and powerful everyday practices, and directly relatable advice, Pema encourages us all to become triumphant bodhisattvas--compassionate beings--in times of hardship. Welcoming the Unwelcome includes teachings on the true meaning of karma, recognizing the basic goodness in ourselves and the people we share our lives with--even the most challenging ones, transforming adversity into opportunities for growth, and freeing ourselves from the empty and illusory labels that separate us. Pema also provides step-by-step guides to a basic sitting meditation and a compassion meditation that anyone can use to bring light to the darkness we face, wherever and whatever it may be.

How can we live our lives when everything seems to fall apart—when we are continually overcome by fear, anxiety, and pain? The answer, Pema Chödrön suggests, might be just the opposite of what you expect. Pema shows that moving toward painful situations and becoming intimate with them can open up our hearts in ways we never before imagined. She draws upon traditional Buddhist wisdom and offers life-changing tools for transforming suffering into perhaps joy. On today’s episode, Dr. David Clarke, MD and I discuss Pema Chodron’s best-selling classic, When Things Fall Apart. Because sometimes, chaos is our teacher. Let's talk about fear. Nine times out of ten it is often about your past. And in the present day, anxiety and fear can be best buds. Worry is not love and being afraid of something feeds negative energy. What happens if we give into fear? What are we actually afraid of? If we say it out loud, is it possible it won't be scary anymore? What if we are scared of the evil of the world? How do we cope with that? Let's walk ourselves to the edge of the cliff, then what? Nina & Anna tackle all of these difficult questions and walk us through what happens when you feel your feelings, face your fears, and let them exist for what they are. This is a JUICY episode! I interview Katrina Petersen, a woman filled to the brim with badassery. She's a former client, corporate "number cruncher," owner of The Crooked Hall Steeple, President of the Maine Chapter of NACE, and more. In this interview, Katrina talks about her former struggles and how she has learned to create the life she really wants. She talks about her toxic divorce, current life, and the “secret sauce” that has propelled her from creating a life filled with lack, fear, and insecurity to one that's abundant, relaxed, and secure. Her former “tornado” energy has simmered to a “windstorm, ” allowing her to become an ambitious “cool, calm, and collected” woman creating the abundant lifestyle she deserves. It irks me to confess this, but I am still in thrall to my to-do list. I've been writing about how not to be busy for 20 years, and I have thoroughly, completely, and annoyingly failed to take my own advice. The truth is, I get a rush from getting stuff done, and believe me, I'm aware of the irony. The thing people thank me for is not my tasking, but my thinking; figuring stuff out, me trying to make more complicated ideas more useful, more practical, more accessible, and I do that with a pen and paper, and a minute to think. How about you, do you do a good job at thinking, mulling, musing, playing, creating, exploring? If you've got that sorted, I salute you. I met Juliet Funt when she was speaking at a conference, and being a decent speaker and presenter myself, I'm always delighted when someone puts on a brilliant performance. Juliet put on that performance, and turns out she's just as fun and smart off the stage, as she is on it. Get book links and resources at https://www.mbs.works/2-pages-podcast/ Juliet reads two pages from ‘When Things Fall Apart' by Pema Chödrön. This is the first official episode of Season Two of Miriam's Meditations. It also represents a deepening of our practice as we learn the Sounds that Heal. The first sound we learn to practice is the sound for grief. This sound corresponds to the lungs, the element of metal and an intention to release grief and breathe in joy. Our bodies remember a great deal of what has happened to us. Some of this we can process and move through, some we hold onto in various ways. Much of this holding is not known to our conscious mind and resides in our energy field. It can cause congestion, illness, confusion. With these sounds, we access these residues and cleanse them, with support of the other breaths of the practice. Holding patterns in the lungs correspond to illnesses like asthma, flu, depression, colds. It's almost like a sticky substance that interferes with the highest functioning of our lungs, reducing our capacity to be in life. For if our lung capacity is diminished, we cannot do all the things we might otherwise do. Join us in deepening our connection to ourselves and our ability to meet the changes of the moment. “Things falling apart is a kind of testing and also a kind of healing. We think hat the point is to pass the test of to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don't really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It's just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.” Pema Chodron, When Things Fall Apart. https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/when-things-fall-apart-pema-chodron/1100310027?ean=9781611803433 Visit https://www.miriamsmeditations.com/sounds-that-heal for more information on the sounds and this practice. Much has been written in geriatrics and palliative care about anticipatory grief, about the grief of caregivers, and even the grief clinicians experience following the deaths of their patients. Krista Harrison, in a Piece of My Mind essay in JAMA, writes about something different. She writes about coping, as an academic hospice and palliative care researcher, with personal grief from the deaths of her dad and step-dad within 5 months of each other. There are many reasons this essay likely touched so many people (it seemed to be all over Twitter). One is that there's a silence around this experience of death. Krista's essay opens up a space to talk about it. Another is that the experience of grief is in fact universal, whether it's the loss of a loved one, the loss of a colleague or mentor to illness or a move, the loss of “a return to normal” following COVID. Krista wanted to add a couple of things not mentioned in the podcast that she found helpful. First, she treasures videos she has of her loved ones recorded before death. Second, she made fingerprint imprints of her two dads and keeps the fingerprint impressions in a locket around her neck. We talk with Krista about these and many other things on this week's podcast.
