Week 1 - Proverbs 1:1-7; 9:10: The Starting Point
For the past six months, people have been asking me to do an episode on managing anxiety. We are living in genuinely anxious times, and the real things to be anxious about are not in short supply. So here it is. For me, anxiety feels like unease. Like I am forgetting something. Like something is wrong, even when I cannot point to what it is. I have noticed a clear uptick in clients describing this lately, too. Difficulty sleeping, intrusive thoughts, a body that cannot relax, the sense of panic gathering. This is anxiety that interferes with daily life and makes it difficult, or even impossible, to do the things we want to do. If this is you, you are not alone, and there are things that help. Read the show notes for today's episode terricole.com/831
A warning from Jesus can feel uncomfortably modern: don't let your heart get dulled. I open with Luke 21 and let that line do its work, then I pray plainly for stronger faith, real repentance, and protection for the brokenhearted and those suffering for the name of Jesus Christ. If you've been weighed down by anxiety, outrage, or constant noise, this is a reset toward spiritual vigilance, daily prayer, and steady hope. From there, I read the marriage passage in 1 Peter 3:1–7 and ask the hard questions it raises about honor, authority, humility, and how our home life connects to our prayer life. Then we stay in Luke as the story moves toward Passover and betrayal, and we sit with Psalm 90 and Psalm 91, two of the clearest biblical pictures of human frailty and God as refuge. These readings hit on Christian endurance, fear, suffering, trust, and what it means to live like tomorrow is not guaranteed. I also share a quick note about my fiction series and how reviews and support help, then pivot into cultural commentary: immigration, public safety concerns, a Medal of Honor spotlight on Oscar R. Burkhard, and an American heritage quote on legislative prayer from Marsh v. Chambers. The thread tying it all together is simple: stay awake, tell the truth, and return to God instead of drifting with the age. In a world where anxiety often feels like the norm, how can families experience true, lasting peace together? In this episode of the Empowered Homes Podcast, hosts Bobby Cooley and Meghan Landi connect with Bible teacher, author, and speaker Tara Dew to talk about her new book, Overflowing Peace: What God Says About a Peace-Filled Life. Sunday, March 1, 2026 10 AM Service Title: Trusting Jesus in Anxious Times Speaker: Pastor Mark Hochgertel
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Michael Ziffra, a psychiatrist and associate professor at Northwestern University who specializes in anxiety disorders. Dr. Ziffra has been writing a Substack series called "Wise Mind in Anxious Times," exploring how we can better navigate the intersection of mental health and our turbulent political landscape. We begin by discussing the alarming advice that made headlines—a Yale psychiatrist suggesting people should avoid family members who voted differently than them. Dr. Ziffra and I unpack why avoidance is the exact opposite of what we'd normally recommend for anxiety, and how vilifying language creates a vicious cycle that intensifies fear and paranoia. He offers practical wisdom on how softening our language can open doors to genuine dialogue. From there, we dive deep into the world of psychiatric medication. Dr. Ziffra helps demystify the "chemical imbalance" theory, explaining why "dysfunction" is a better term than "imbalance" since we can't actually measure neurotransmitter levels the way we can check vitamin D. We explore fascinating territory including opioid receptors and depression, how low-dose naltrexone works, the dangers of chronic benzodiazepine use, and why tapering off medications requires far more patience than most people realize. We also discuss the overlooked impacts of birth control on young women's mental health, sleep disorders that masquerade as psychiatric conditions, and the emerging questions around weight loss drugs and ketamine for treatment-resistant depression.Dr. Michael Ziffra is a psychiatrist and Associate Professor at Northwestern University, specializing in anxiety and mood disorders. Dr. Ziffra also is the author of “Wise Mind in Anxious Times”, a series on Substack exploring the interface between mental health and our sociopolitical climate. Its aim is to provide analysis and commentary from a mental health specialist with insight into why we experience anxiety about particular issues and happenings, and how to better manage that anxiety. In this episode, Ken spends some time with the group in Luke. He points out that in spite of the threats posed to him by the religious leaders and by living under Roman occupation, Jesus was a consistently non-anxious presence. Moreover, he did not let himself get sucked into theological or political debates of the day. Rather, he regularly and consistently defined himself and the way of the Kingdom and stayed engaged, yet remained above the fray. Ken shares with the group 7 ways we can define ourselves as followers of Jesus. He asks us to consider how we can live our lives in such a way that we are not at the mercy of anxiety. How can we show up daily as the best version of ourselves, no matter what is happening in the world around us? How can we exchange our expectations for our nation, the world, and our lives for hopes, accepting what is and managing ourselves well in the midst of it?This episode was recorded on October 31st, 2025.
Are we living in the last days? John says yes, but not how you might think. In 1 John 2, we're reminded that these days began when Jesus came and will end when He returns. The question isn't when the last days are, but how we live in them. In a world filled with fear, deception, and distraction, you don't have to be anxious; you can be anchored. Be aware of the battle, Be secure in Christ, Be with Jesus and abide in Him daily. Because in the end… Jesus wins. Phoenix Bible Church is a church in the heart of the city of Phoenix, Arizona. We desire to engage culture, uphold truth and love people. In a world where life can be heavy and confusing, we want to cover the hard truths - with grace. This is difficulty and messy - and so are we - but the love of Jesus meets us in our mess. Our rhythm is to gather to worship on Sunday and then scatter during the week to love, live and lead together. We are imperfect people moved by the perfect love of Jesus. Come as you are. Experience His love.

Hey folks, Ned here. If you've ever felt like life's got you underwater—like you're just barely catching your breath before the next wave crashes in—this one's for you. In this episode, I sit down with my dear friend, partner, and co-author Dr. William Stixrud to talk about something that's more relevant now than ever: how we actually relieve stress—not just dodge it.We unpack the critical difference between stress relief (those momentary escapes) and stress release (the tools that really let the pressure out), and why both are necessary. We also dive into practices that help us become non-anxious presences for our kids, and how that calm can be just as contagious as stress. Whether it's exercise, meditation, social connection, or just laughing with friends, we explore the science-backed ways to bring your nervous system back online and show up for your family with clarity and calm. Episode Highlights:[0:00] - Introduction and announcement of the new workbook, The Seven Principles for Raising a Self-Driven Child[1:39] - That overwhelmed feeling—why so many of us are barely staying afloat[3:12] - Stress relief vs. stress release: what's the difference and why it matters[5:39] - Coping methods kids use—and why many of them are just avoidance strategies[7:32] - The trouble with short-term fixes like weed and excessive screen time[8:31] - Real stress release through exercise, baking, and yes—carrot cake[10:15] - How parents' stress regulation directly impacts their children[11:38] - Two paths to calm: cognitive reframing and physiological practices[14:42] - Radical acceptance—how shifting our mindset reduces suffering[16:31] - The vital role of calm people and community in weathering storms[20:08] - Emergency stress relief: laughter, singing, deep breathing, and movement[22:50] - The power of consistent practices like meditation and gratitude[25:57] - Final thoughts: combining cognitive, physiological, and social strategies for real resilience If this episode has helped you, remember to rate, follow, and share the Self-Driven Child Podcast. “Do not worry” (Matthew 6:25). Worry is so familiar that we often treat it as inevitable – yet Jesus gives us a direct command not to. His words aren't a cold prohibition but a gracious invitation to trust the Father's love and care for us. In this episode, Haley and Dustin dive into Jesus' teaching in Matthew 6 to unpack the difference between worry and healthy concern. Along the way, they share biblical insights for finding peace in anxious times and introduce four types of “worry-ers” to help you recognize patterns in your own life. Whatever burdens you're carrying today, may this conversation help you find peace and strengthen your trust in the Lord. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Can anyone of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?' or ‘What shall we drink?' or ‘What shall we wear?' 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Pastors Tim Brown, Tuhina Rasche, and Jason Chesnut reflect on Hebrews 9:23 – 10:18, for reading number 11 of Heartfelt Hebrews. Each year, the North Carolina Synod embarks on a summer bible reading plan. This year is Heartfelt Hebrews, a Bible reading journey through one of the most poetic, profound, and mysterious books in the New Testament. We don't know who wrote Hebrews or exactly who first heard it, but we do know this: it speaks powerfully into our lives today. With rich imagery, deep theological insight, and a bold reimagining of Old Testament traditions, Hebrews invites us to wonder, to wrestle, and to worship. Whether you've read it before or are encountering it for the first time, this is a chance to explore timeless questions about Jesus, faith, and community—together. Offered by the synod's Engage the Bible Ministry Team (a Book of Faith ministry), this journey through Scriptures will be our tenth summer together exploring a book of the Bible. Sinners is the fifth feature film written and directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan. (Coogler has never made a feature without Jordan.) After years of sequels and Marvel movies, it’s Coogler’s first wholly original movie based on no other source material whatsoever. Sinners is a sexy Southern musical horror gangster thriller set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta. With vampires. And it’s the No. 1 movie in the country. Plus: We read Jill Lepore’s New Yorker piece about reading a Penguin Classic on each of the first 100 days of President Trump’s second term. And then a Vox piece about giving up Spotify. And we started thinking about the ways that we’re all consuming culture — avoiding or giving up some things, immersing ourselves in other things, etc. — in these, let’s say, anxious times. This week I'm excited to revisit a conversation I had with Chris Bailey. Chris has been a guest on the show a number of times, and in this episode, he unpacks the origins, research, and results of his book, How to Calm Your Mind: Finding Presence and Productivity in Anxious Times. I decided to revisit this conversation as the need for calm has been so important for me in recent weeks and months as I suspect it has been for you as well. In our chat Chris and I discuss the events that led up to him writing this book while exploring a number of techniques, and tips for finding presence and calm that he developed and practiced along that journey. We discuss digital fasting, the advantages of analog items for productivity, and how slowing down your lifestyle can often lead to speeding up your efficiency! Chris Bailey is a productivity expert, and the bestselling author of two books about productivity: Hyperfocus and The Productivity Project. Chris writes about productivity at chrisbailey.com, and speaks to organizations around the globe on how they can become more productive, without hating the process. ______________________________________ Connect with Chris: Website LinkedIn Twitter ______________________________________ Connect with Erik: LinkedIn Facebook Instagram ______________________________________ This Podcast is Powered By: Descript Descript 101 Castmagic Ecamm Podpage Rodecaster Pro Top Productivity Books List Make sure to support the show by checking out the sponsors!
