In this episode, I talk about the art of self-soothing—how to regulate your emotions without relying on external validation or unhealthy coping mechanisms. Developing this skill can help you navigate stress, prevent impulsive reactions, and support your overall well-being. I'll also share with you a variety of self-soothing techniques, from touch-based methods, sound, taste, and so much more. Tune in to discover how small, intentional practices can help you feel grounded and in control. In this episode you will learn: What self-soothing is and why it's crucial for emotional regulation The difference between self-soothing and unhealthy coping mechanisms How physical touch techniques like the butterfly hug and weighted blankets can provide comfort The role of sensory experiences (sight, sound, smell, taste) in emotional regulation How movement and breathwork can calm the nervous system Why experimenting with different techniques is key to finding what works for you The importance of self-compassion in developing self-soothing skills - How will you practice self-soothing? Americans are getting more and more of our calories from ultra-processed foods. One study found that more than half of our diets consist of foods that contain ingredients with no nutritional value including sports drinks, wheat bread, flavored yogurt, and frozen pizza. Studies have shown ultra-processed foods can lead to poor health outcomes from obesity and cancer to anxiety. But the products that shoppers should steer clear of can be hard to detect. They are often marketed as healthy options and some health experts say they are not all bad. We dig into the rise of ultra-processed foods, what they might mean for our health and how to spot them on grocery shelves. Guests: Alice Callahan, nutrition reporter, The New York Times Dr. Uma Naidoo, psychiatrist, chef, and nutritionist; She is the author of "This Is Your Brain on Food" and "Calm Your Mind with Food." Laurel Bristow, host of Health Wanted, WABE Public Radio in Atlanta and NPR; She is also associate director of audience development for the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.

Send us a textAs I reflect on this year, I've noticed something new: I'm way less interested in chasing those giant, shiny achievement goals. Instead, I'm soaking up the everyday moments—and loving it. Honestly, that's a twist for me, but then I stumbled on an interview that totally lit the spark. When I picked up How to Calm Your Mind, I didn't realize it was exactly what I needed.Chris Bailey—productivity whiz, calm connoisseur, and all-around brilliant storyteller—shares this vivid moment where he spotted himself in the overflow drain of his bathtub (yep, that's what that random metal thing is called) looking utterly wiped out. Next day? Public anxiety meltdown.Sound familiar? We've all been there, somewhere on the anxiety spectrum. And guess what? The lowest point on that spectrum isn't zero—it's something deeper: true calm. But, uh, how do we even get there?Chris says it starts with understanding burnout. Real burnout comes with three heavy hitters: exhaustion (check), cynicism (hello, eye rolls), and inefficacy (the opposite of feeling productive). And the culprits? Six sneaky factors—found at work and in life—that, when misaligned, push you to the edge. Then there's dopamine, that pesky chemical our brain craves but rarely gets from the right sources. Chris introduces a “Stimulation Fast”—basically detoxing from hollow dopamine hits like, yep, social media. Sure, TikTok's fun, but swapping it for something truly fulfilling (knitting? gardening? birdwatching?) is a game-changer.At its core, most of us want a meaningful life. So here's the mic-drop question Chris leaves us with:Are you chasing a life that you value—or one the world values? What's Inside:Why exactly would you want to calm your mind?Burnout is more than just exhaustion. What are the three symptoms?Six factors at work that contribute to burnout, stress, and anxiety... Can you fix them?Do you need stimulation fast? Taking a look at empty sources of dopamine? This interview was the catalyst for a deep look inward, and I'm focusing less on huge achievements and more on the value I find in my day-to-day. Where are you on that spectrum? Let me know on Insta!Mentioned in This Episode:Chris BaileyFit Feels Good info@fitfeelsgood.com Oonagh on Insta

Hi everyone, welcome back to The Chai on Life Podcast! It feels really good to say that after the holiday hiatus we've had. The holidays were so nice, and I feel so blessed that I was able to take that pause to fully focus on Hashem, my family and other connections in my life and now feel even more energized coming back to the podcast and all of the conversations and guests I have lined up for this year.Today's episode is on somatic healing with Rena Reiser. While we recorded this before the chagim, it feels like such an important one coming back into everything. We had time and space to turn off, to disconnect from technology and the news and reconnect to the things that matter most.More about Rena:Rena is a Polyvagal-Informed Focusing Trainer. She trains female leaders and healers to facilitate embodied change in the lives of those around them. In other words, Rena helps them understand how their clients' autonomic nervous systems impact their behaviors and emotions and how to use the Focusing technique to explore and shift these behaviors effectively.Rena has more than a decade of ongoing training including Focusing, Polyvagal Theory, Non-Violent Communication, and Inner Child/Parts work that she uses in her own life and that of her clients. Together they forge a uniquely empowering approach that allows clients to shift their behaviors at their source in a compassionate and embodied way.In this episode, she speaks about why we are so stressed and overwhelmed today, how we can get to a place of menuchas hanefesh, what menuchas hanefesh actually means, exercises we can do to achieve more calm right now, why that may be the prerequisite to other spiritual growth and so much more. She even goes through one of her modalities with me in real time so you can get an idea of how things work. It's Cheshvan, it's the time to put all of our spiritual growth into action and this episode is the perfect way to set the stage to get you into the best mental headspace in order to achieve your goals. To learn more about Rena, you can visit her website at renareiser.com. Check out her own podcast called The Embodied Jewish Women and follow her on Instagram @renareiser.
On this week's Tech Nation, Moira speaks with Chris Bailey about “How to Calm Your Mind … Finding Presence and Productivity in Anxious Times”. Science tells us that humans love dopamine, caffeine is essentially liquid stress, and burnout is more than being exhausted. Then, teaching our immune systems to recognize tumours in our own bodies and then eliminate them. Bolt Biotherapeutics' CEO, Dr. Randy Schatzman, talks about the role of myeloid cells, and Bolt is studying nearly two dozen forms of HER2-related cancers.

Dr. Naidoo is an awarded and board-certified Harvard nutritional psychiatrist, professional chef, and nutritional biologist. She is the Founder and Director of the first-ever hospital-based nutritional and metabolic psychiatry service in the United States at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Director of Nutritional Psychiatry at the MGH Academy. In our enlightening conversation, Dr. Naidoo talks about her latest book, Calm Your Mind With Food, and we dive into the impact of anxiety during the pandemic. We explore how anxiety influences our susceptibility to metabolic diseases, autoimmunity, and Alzheimer's, and the difference between processed foods and homemade meals. Dr. Naidoo emphasizes the pivotal role of nutrition in mental health, particularly the interplay between the enteric nervous system, the vagus nerve, and brain function. Our discussion also covers the scientific underpinnings of the gut microbiome, the pitfalls of non-nutritive sweeteners and sugars, and the critical roles of neurotransmitters and neuroinflammation. She also elucidates the concept of leptin and its resistance, critiques nutritional trends like the low-fat craze, and clarifies the nuanced impacts of carbohydrates, fiber, and plant-based versus omnivorous diets.
