Detrás de esa frase cotidiana se esconde la historia real de los hermanos Tonetti, dos payasos nacidos en Santander que marcaron una época dorada del circo en España y cuyo legado sigue visible en la ciudad, a pie de calle, en el monumento del parque de Mesones.José y Manolo Villa del Río —conocidos artísticamente como Pepe y Nolo Tonetti— nacieron en 1921 y 1928, respectivamente, en la actual calle San Sebastián, cerca del río de la Pila. Desde muy pequeño, Pepe mostraba una inclinación natural por hacer reír: se pintaba la cara con hollín y representaba escenas cómicas improvisadas ante los vecinos. Su padre intentó reconducirlo hacia un oficio “más serio”, llevándolo a trabajar a la eléctrica de Viesgo, pero la vocación pudo más.
