Magalhães eventually cooperated, testified against Banfield, and was sentenced to ten years.At sentencing, Azcarate called the scheme unfathomable and told Banfield his cruelty reflects evil. She reminded him the same crime would have carried a death sentence five years earlier. Banfield responded by proclaiming his innocence, telling the court he loved Christine, and insisting the system failed him. The jury, the judge, and the evidence say otherwise. Life without parole. "Les Roches Rouges" do francês Bruno Dumont é produzido pela portuguesa Rosa Filmes, a obra rodada essencialmente no sudeste francês, perto de Cannes, aborda temas de uma infância neste cenário de escarpas vermelhas, junto ao Mar Mediterrâneo. A película estreia na Quinzena dos cineastas. O produtor Joaquim Sapinho comentou à RFIa obra e este certame, em curso até 23 de Maio. Temos o privilégio de acolher de novo o Joaquim Sapinho da Rosa Filmes. Boa tarde! Bem vindo a mais uma edição do Festival de Cinema de Cannes. Estamos juntos para falar, nomeadamente do filme "Les Roches Rouges" de Bruno Dumont, com quem já tinham colaborado no passado. E é a Rosa Films, então produtora principal por detrás desta obra. Exacto. Nós tínhamo-nos conhecido no "L'Empire" e éramos co-produtores e quando chegou a oportunidade de fazer este filme, lá estávamos nós a querer colaborar e a ajudar. Mas as dificuldades de produção do filme obrigaram nos a nós a passar a produtores principais, porque todas as dificuldades de dinheiro e também de coordenação.... O realizador queria filmar este verão que passou. E, pela primeira vez na história das relações cinematográficas dos dois países, fez-se um filme em França com uma equipa inteiramente portuguesa. É muito ao contrário, habitualmente !   É sempre ao contrário. Portanto, foi uma coisa absolutamente mágica. Quando nós tomamos conta da produção, ficou uma arquitectura com filmagem em França. Filmagem em Portugal é filmagem em Itália. Mas toda a produção é portuguesa e os outros "partners" italianos, franceses e espanhóis ficaram apenas a ajudar. Portanto, foi uma experiência única. Nós já tínhamos vivido esta experiência com o filme do Magalhães, que tinha rodagens em Portugal.   No ano passado !   Com filmagens em Espanha e tinha filmagens nas Filipinas e também do lado espanhol. Tinha corrido tudo mal. Mandámos a equipa portuguesa depois nas Filipinas também correu mal. Mandámos também a equipa portuguesa. Portanto, aqui foi o mesmo. Foi só continuar esta estratégia, Se os outros não conseguem fazer, nós conseguimos. E então o filme é de facto rodado essencialmente no sul de França, na região onde nós nos encontramos um bocadinho, também em Itália, mas também em Portugal !? O filme também teve uma parte rodado em Portugal e é sempre este prazer de fazermos filmes cosmopolitas em que quer à produção quer às histórias, retratam esta Europa que nós amamos e não apenas a ideia de nacionalismos em que toda a gente está separada.   Bruno Dumont que já teve também projectos cá em Cannes no passado, já teve prémios cá, por exemplo, com "La vie de Jésus", "L'Humanité". Agora é um filme muito sobre a infância ou sobre uma parte do litoral do sul de França, onde a fotografia tem um papel absolutamente descomunal ! Eu acho que é só olhar à volta no sítio onde estamos a fazer esta conversa aqui em Cannes e ver este mar esmeralda. O que é que há de tão especial em Saint Raphaël ? É que para lá do mar esmeralda há umas rochas vermelhas. O filme em português chama se "Escarpas Vermelhas". Encontramos um título muito bonito em francês "Les Roches Rouges". Porque, digamos, é este espaço mágico, esta jóia que é a cor azul. Mas do lado da infância. Ou seja, é um filme sobre crescer, sobre como é que se cresce. Sobre as violências de crescer e sobre os amores também. É um filme... Sobre o bem e o mal? O bem e o mal., mas é um rapaz e uma rapariga que estão apaixonados. Fazem uma escapadela para Itália no comboio, mas têm só cinco anos. Portanto, o que é fascinante aqui é que nós somos humanos, logo a partir do momento em que nascemos e começamos a crescer apaixonados e a viver riscos. Portanto, é um filme, como direi? A dizer que a vida é apaixonante e que vale a pena correr riscos. E não lhe parece que eles eram, de facto, todos bastante precoces ? Teriam cerca de cinco anos. Efectivamente viajam juntos. Ele, de forma muito fácil, acaba por passar por cima do portão para ir ter com a namorada. Ele está muito determinado, não é o rapaz? O Géo está determinado ! Ele está determinado. E o que é bonito é que porque é que o filme também é "Les Roches Rouges" ? Não é apenas uma questão plástica. É porque essas rochas são umas rochas em que em França se faz uns saltos muito arriscados. E ele está sempre a demonstrar o seu valor saltando dessas rochas vermelhas. Saltos para mergulho ! Para mergulhar e, portanto, é um filme que defende a ideia de viver como uma ideia apaixonada. É uma ideia em que não podemos, digamos, estar esmagados pelo medo para viver, mas de que é possível viver com intensidade. E aqui o americano Carlos Alfonso Coral deve ter tido um papel preponderante em relação à questão da imagem, de captar este litoral e estas escarpas vermelhas? Ele é um director muito sensível, muito poético, tem trabalhado essencialmente com o Roberto Minervino, que tem tido também os filmes aqui em Cannes. Mas e vive neste momento em Los Angeles. Ele é do México e, claro, ficou. Nunca tinha estado aqui na Côte d'Azur. E estas cores e esta dramaticidade do filme, evidentemente, permitiram-lhe a ele também responder, dando estas cores e essa dramaticidade ao cinema. Que sabor tem, então, esta estréia aqui na Quinzena dos Cineastas com este filme ? A Rosa Filmes, desde 2016 tem sempre um filme seleccionado em Cannes. Nem sei se haverá outra produtora no mundo ? Desde 2016, portanto vamos para 11 anos, não é? Todos os anos sempre um filme, e já tivemos vários filmes em que éramos nós os produtores principais, mas estes dois últimos também, quer com o Magalhães, com o Gael Garcia Bernal, realizado pelo Lav Diaz, quer agora com este filme do Bruno Dumont isto se repete. Portanto, não há outra palavra. É um prazer ! Eu acho que Cannes é um festival em que a paixão pelo cinema se sobrepõe a tudo, a todas as outras questões. E toda a gente se sente atraída por isto e, portanto, é o sítio certo para mostrar os filmes que nós fazemos. E a nossa imagem de marca também está ligada a Cannes. Então e esta septuagésima nona edição do Festival interessa-o ? Se sim, que mais lhe interessa aqui neste certame? Eu acho que há um realizador francês extraordinário. Eu acho que é o grande jovem realizador francês que é o Arthur Harari e é a sua terceira longa metragem. Também ganhou o Oscar de melhor Argumento no ano passado. Está em competição nas longas metragens, na selecção principal ! Sim, na selecção principal, nas longas metragens. E é esse filme de que foi argumentista ganhou também a Palma de Ouro há dois anos. Eu acho que o grande realizador francês agora da Nova geração é este filme. Será o filme mais entusiasmante para ver. Muitos filmes franceses, precisamente na competição, Se calhar mais do que é habitual, portanto, também se calhar provar a boa forma do cinema hexagonal, neste momento, o que é que acha ? Muitos filmes franceses e também muitos actores e actrizes franceses nos filmes estrangeiros. Exactamente. Até em filmes estrangeiros, japoneses, austríacos ! Portanto, é uma grande... Eu acho que a França é o centro do cinema europeu e pouco a pouco está a tornar-se também o centro do cinema, porque a gente vê que os Óscares estão a copiar o modelo. Este modelo europeu de Cannes e portanto temos todos que nos adaptar uns aos outros. Mas dá me a impressão que este nosso modelo do cinema europeu que tem como centro a França e Cannes, é o que está mais vivo neste momento. E finalmente, o cinema português. No meio desta dinâmica toda, como é que o vê nesta altura? Eu bem sei que é sempre complicado. É sempre a mesma dificuldade de acesso a financiamentos. No entanto, surgem sempre propostas que vão singrando internacionalmente, não é?   Dou-lhe o meu exemplo vou filmar este ano em África. Fazer um filme sobre Angola. Eu acho que vai ser o primeiro filme em que um português vai fazer o ponto de vista do outro ponto de vista dos movimentos de independência e não um filme nostálgico sobre "Ah, que pena, Portugal perdeu África". Há uns filmes que são mais engraçados a falar desse assunto, outros mais dramáticos, outros mais melancólicos. Eu não estou interessado nisso. Estou interessado é o "como é que foi este conflito e qual é o ponto de vista do outro" ? E, portanto, vou fazer um filme pela primeira vez sobre como é que os movimentos de independência se confrontavam connosco. Mas o meu ponto de vista ainda é mais complexo. Esse confronto connosco era de portugueses com portugueses. Toda a gente tinha o mesmo bilhete de identidade. Portanto, tentar ter um ponto de vista que ajude a que Portugal possa viver com o seu passado, de outra maneira.   E vão rodar também na África Equatorial, nomeadamente. A dinâmica do cinema português está em cada filme que é feito. E de quem é o argumento ? É meu. É uma história extraordinária que eu descobri, já ando a preparar o filme há cerca de dez anos, porque descubro um dia um folheto em francês sobre cinco mulheres que tinham sido presas. Não pelos portugueses lá em Angola, mas sim pela UPA, que era um movimento rival que depois se transformou no FNLA. E essas mulheres são presas e depois são mortas. Portanto, é uma tragédia enorme. E, portanto, é a primeira vez que acontece. Cinco mulheres entram na guerrilha e entram. Vêm do Congo, no quadro do MPLA, entram em Angola e depois vão ser atacadas pela UPA e vão ser mortas. E portanto é contar esta tragédia do que é que estava a acontecer de complexo dentro dos movimentos de libertação. Quando eu descobri estas mulheres, a lider chama-se Deolinda Rodrigues. Ela é actualmente o símbolo da mulher angolana. Há um dia feriado que é o dia em que ela foi morta, esta Deolinda Rodrigues. E eu, desde que conheci esta personagem, esta pessoa, este fantasma, tomou posse de mim e passei a viver obcecado com esta história. E, portanto, filmá-la. E também libertar me deste fantasma.

Brendan Banfield will die in prison. A Fairfax County jury convicted the former IRS special agent of aggravated murder Monday in one of the most disturbing domestic murder plots in recent memory. The 40-year-old federal law enforcement officer now faces mandatory life without parole for the February 2023 killings of his wife Christine and Joseph Ryan — a stranger prosecutors say was lured to the family home and set up to take the fall.                    The prosecution's case hinged on testimony from Juliana Peres Magalhães, the family's 25-year-old Brazilian au pair who was having an affair with Banfield. She told jurors Banfield wanted to "get rid of" his wife so they could marry and have children together. According to her account, they created fake profiles on FetLife posing as Christine, catfished Ryan into believing he was meeting a willing woman for a violent sexual encounter, then executed him when he showed up.Magalhães testified she watched Banfield stab Christine seven times in the neck, then stage the scene — smearing his wife's blood on Ryan's body to frame him as the attacker. She admitted firing the second shot into Ryan herself. In exchange for her testimony, prosecutors reduced her murder charge to manslaughter with time served.The defense called her a liar who sold out her co-conspirator. They pointed to missing DNA evidence, challenged the digital forensics, and accused investigators of tunnel vision. Banfield took the stand and called the allegations "absolutely crazy."
