Canadian electro-industrial band Front Line Assembly, led by Bill Leeb with longtime collaborator Rhys Fulber, released their eighth album Hard Wired in 1995. The album blends harsh electronic beats, cinematic synth textures, distorted vocals, and heavy guitar riffs, all characteristics of the industrial and cyberpunk aesthetics of the mid-'90s (think Hackers, Strange Days, Johnny Mnemonic). Lyrically and thematically, Hard Wired explores dystopian, technological, and transhumanist topics, reflecting fears and fascinations with the digital age, surveillance, and the loss of humanity in a mechanized world. Polished yet gritty production, mixing cold mechanical rhythms with a dark, atmospheric intensity, the album bridges the gap between their earlier EBM (Electronic Body Music) roots and a heavier, more industrial rock-influenced style.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Neologic Spasm 33:47 - Condemned 40:12 - Modus Operandi 50:29 - Infra Rec Combat 1:01:52 - Circuitry Outro - Barcode   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. This week Host, Cirina Catania talks with the ever-extraordinary electronic musician, Rhys Fulber. And she shares some great news from Tim Cook and the folks at Apple...Lumafusion has been awarded "Best Video App for 2021," on the App Store. You will love this conversation with Rhys. He is a truly international musical genius who was born in Vancouver of a German father and a mother from Great Britain.  Rhys grew up with the sounds of Led Zeppelin, Kraftwerk and the local punk rockers blasting from his father's recording studio. At the age of 13 he began drumming, sometimes gigging with his Dad, and he was always at the studio. In 1984, he became interested in electronic music and once he got his first synthesizer, life changed for him! He became friends with Bill Leeb, who had just left Skinny Puppy. Rhys' early adventures included collaborations with Front Line Assembly and eventually tours with that group as well as Delirium well into the late 90's. It was fun talking with him and I found him to be quite understated when it comes to talking about himself…He mentions the time when Sara Mc Lachlan dropped in on him and liked what she heard. They collaborated on that work! And a few years later, he worked with Sinead O'Connor. Of course, we talk about the GEAR that he uses to tour and create his electronic music, and I'm sure you'll find it fascinating. Chicago-based industrial, electronic, ONE WOMAN ARMY, I Ya Toyah blends the chaos and balance with a familiar vibe of industrial electronica sound. The meaning behind the name I Ya Toyah sustains these values- when spoken out loud. In Polish it means "It's Just Me." Her logo art emerging from peace and anarchy symbols highlights the rebel psyche, her true nature. Her music is a fusion of smooth, cutting edge vocals, surreal guitars, hypnotizing beats and multiple electronic synth elements arising into dark arrangements that, combined with storytelling lyrics, respond to the paranoia of everyday reality. I Ya Toyah released her self-written and produced debut album in 2018 called “Code Blue” which received immediate attention by the music industry.  In 2020 she released the remix project for the “Code Blue” album which included a  collaboration with Rhys Fulber of Conjure One and Front Line Assembly. Her latest album is called “Out of Order” released in 2021.

Rhys Fulber, a mainstay of Roadrunner canon and an icon of my CD player, joins me to talk about Front Line Assembly and their landmark 1994 album "Millennium." This was a bold new direction for the duo as they went from traditional electronic music to a more industrial metal sound they'd help pioneer. You'll hear about how that idea came about, working with Devin Townsend on the record, their front line assemblance into the Roadrunner family, and the beginnings of the relationship with Fear Factory! Plus a few other news and notes, some never before heard! Check out Rhys Fulber's new EP "Resolve" at http://RhysFulber.BandCamp.com

Bess — “Dragonfly”, 2019. Luscious femme-forward electro that echoes Switchblade Symphony but with far more emphasis on the switchblades.Sierra — “Gone”, 2019. Criminally perfect retro wave electro funk that holds you by the hair and forces you to nod along with every deep black barb-wired hook. Physicists have determined that this song’s kick drum will appear as the new heaviest element on the Periodic Table.Silent Runners — “Forgotten”, 2019. I love the metronomic build of this song, but that drop at 3 minutes, the low rolling tension and the retaliatory backhand before the curtains close is fucking auditory cinema. A highlight song from a highlight album.Tor Lundvall — “The Night Watch”, 2019. This passionate, gloomy synthpop poem feels like summer at 9 pm where the sun recedes and the ghosts shimmer at the edge of the trees.Rhys Fulber & Blush Response — “Dissipate”, 2019. The rolling bowels and bleak pad work of this song are the soundtrack to every slow-motion vampire rave. Play this over the opening scene of “Blade” instead of that trash New Order remix.Panther Modern — “Body//reaction”, 2019. The high-water mark of modern synthpunk with production so tight it could shelter life in outer space.Einstürzende Neubauten — “Feurio!”, 1989. I my love/hate for this band swings hard for “love” on this track, a sonic wall of bedlam that plows through a sound system like a heaving, steaming 18-wheeler that blew half its tires on its climb out of hell.Grauzone — “Eisbaer”, 1980. Stone classic German coldwave. Come for the gimmick, stay for the bass, collapse with that closing saxophone.Individual Totem — “Subsistence”, 1997. This track — crunchy beats, immaculate sound design, emotive singing — is mother electro’s warmest embrace. No one else except Haujobb and Forme Tadre had perfected the science of this sound in the 90s.Sabotage Q.C.Q.C. — “Les fleurs du mal”, 1995. Second only to maybe Die Form when it comes to beats, latex and sweat.Mascarpone — “Faceless”, 2019. The horror scream is a dumb trope, but the demonic acid-drenched bassline and skull-slapping kick drum more than cover for the sins of cliched sampling. The less obvious beauty is the chameleon-shifting melodies and rhythms that keep the water roiling across every moment.Kontravoid — “Hold Nothing”, 2018. It’s hard not to unclench your jaw in this tough-as-nails EBM workout. The tension between kicks hangs like blood in the air, and the ripping body blows don’t relinquish their assault until your bones hit the floor.Skinny Puppy — “Tin Omen 1”, 1990. One of the absolute gems in Puppy’s canon, this descent into hell is all three members unleashed and unhinged, a free fall of righteous fury and vengeful intent. (This version, from the “Worlock” single, removes the production muck of the album cut.)And One — “Ghama Voodoo”, 1995. A b-side to the “Deutschmaschine” single, this is the soundtrack to sinking, a long, slow immersion into a sensory-deprived abyss of grey.

Rhys Fulber's CV is pretty amazing: from his work with Front Line Assembly, Delirium, Intermix (these all with Bill Leeb), production and programming work with everyone from Fear Factory to Josh Groban, and solo recordings and performances - he's got a full platter. His most recent release - Ostalgia - is an almost perfect synthesis of old-school EBM and brittle-edge LA techno, and it's been banging around the house for the last few weeks on heavy rotation. In talking with Rhys, it turns out he's just an incredibly nice guy as well - he feels so lucky to have had the opportunities that he's had, and frame his career as being 'in the right place at the right time'. Of course, a big part of it is Rhys' willingness to be a hard worker and follow-through guy, and the breadth of his work is an indication of how respected he is in the industry. I was able to catch up with him on a drive into LA (hands-free!), and it was great to learn most about his history in Vancouver, how he got involved in remixing and production, and his current efforts in bringing his unique sound to music and performance. This was such a fun talk, and I hope that it helps reveal more about the Vancouver scene, Rhys' personal work and the current music industry. Enjoy!
