Melissa T came into the rooms of Al-anon over 15 years ago to learn how to fix all the dysfunctional, maddening people in her life. Fortunately, when that didn't work, she stuck around to “fix” herself. She is a member of The Big Book Sponsorship group and sponsors fellows in Coda, Al-anon and SLAA. She credits her recovery journey for the beautiful life she has today, and considers it a privilege to share her experience, strength and hope with others. Today Melissa speaks to us on the topic of "Addiction is a Family Disease".Reco12 is all about exploring the common threads of addiction and sharing tools and hope from those on a similar path. We gather from diverse backgrounds, faiths, and places to learn and support one another. Our speakers are members of various fellowships, addictions, and afflictions, thus showing the common threads of recovery, no matter our addiction or affliction. Support Reco12's 12th Step Mission! Addiction is often seen as an individual struggle, but what if we told you it's a family disease? In the latest episode of the Secret Life Podcast, host Brianne Davis-Gantt pulls back the curtain on the complex web of addiction, revealing how it affects not just the individual, but the entire family system. Addiction doesn't happen in a vacuum. The roles each family member plays can contribute to the creation and perpetuation of addictive behaviors. Whether it's enabling, codependency, or emotional incest, these dynamics can create a breeding ground for addiction. Brianne, with her years of experience in recovery and therapy, explains that healing must involve the entire family. It's about peeling back the layers and addressing the generational trauma that often lies at the root of addiction. The episode delves into the uncomfortable truth that many families face: the addict is often a symptom of a larger dysfunction within the family. Brianne emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries and redefining roles to foster a healthier environment. It's not just about getting the addict sober; it's about rewiring the entire family system to support recovery and growth. One of the most powerful takeaways from the episode is the concept of autonomy within the family system. Each member must look at their role and make conscious changes to break the cycle of addiction. Brianne challenges listeners to examine their own behaviors and consider how they might be contributing to the problem. This episode is a must-listen for anyone dealing with addiction in their family. It offers a fresh perspective on recovery, emphasizing the need for collective healing and transformation. Tune in to gain insights and practical advice on how to support a loved one while also taking care of your own well-being. This podcast has been around for a while now, so it's rare that I get to say that something is a "first ever." Today is one of those rare days. When I first interviewed Suzanne Tiger about her stunning chronic illness and pain recovery after 12 years of constant suffering, the story of her supportive husband Aaron got my attention. I spend all of my energy on this podcast guiding and supporting people with chronic symptoms, but have never interviewed someone on the other side of the coin. When Aaron Tiger agreed to come and share his story, I was eager to include his experience. After all, chronic pain is a family disease. It touches everyone who loves and cares about the identified patient. For every person dealing with chronic pain, there are at least 1 (or 10) who are affected in their own lives. PLEASE forward this podcast to one of those people who might need it. Aaron's ability to speak with empathy and clarity is a gift to us all. I'm honored to share it with you. When it comes to addiction, it's important to remember that it is a family disease. When one person in the family struggles with addiction, it impacts everyone - the turmoil, pain, and confusion it brings ripple through every relationship, leaving no parent, sibling, or spouse unmarked. There is good news, however - Families can and do heal together. If you have a loved one who is struggling with addiction, you may find yourself asking the question, “How can I navigate this tumultuous journey without falling into the trap of enabling my loved one?” The importance of family involvement in the recovery process cannot be overstated. When families commit to healing together, they can break the cycles of pain and rebuild trust and connection. In this podcast takeover, Julie DeNofa, President of Positive Recovery Centers, and Colleen Hargrove, LCDC, Outpatient Manager at PRC—Round Rock, discuss the various family roles in addiction and how to support your loved ones on their journey to recovery. Be sure to tune in as Julie and Colleen explore the delicate balance between providing support for recovery and enabling addiction, offering practical tips and real-life examples of families who have successfully navigated this path. Topics Discussed: Why family involvement is a vital part of addiction treatment Setting healthy boundaries for yourself while instilling hope for others Why addressing the root causes is more effective than fixing the symptoms Learning how to talk to your kids about addiction and recovery The difference between enabling and supporting your loved ones Connect with us on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverymd/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/groups/positiverecoverymd/ FB Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032 TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links: Want to receive the daily Positive Intervention from Dr. Powers' Positive Recovery Daily Guide? In this week's episode I sat down with Doctor of Nutrition and Author, Dr. Brooke Scheller. Dr. Scheller is on a mission to help people heal their relationship with alcohol through nutrition, and her new book How to Eat to Change How You Drink is full of helpful tips and information to support anyone looking to change their drinking habits. In this conversation, Dr. Scheller discusses the role of nutrition in mental health and how nutrients can impact mood and the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin. She explains how alcohol depletes key nutrients and can contribute to anxiety and depression. We discuss the role of supplements such as B vitamins, amino acids, and magnesium to support alcohol recovery, along with exploring the negative effects of alcohol on sleep and the cravings for carbs and sugar that often follow disrupted sleep. Finally, we talk about the importance of community in sobriety and Dr. Scheller shares her three non-negotiables for a happy, joyous, and free life: community, self-development, and wellness. Thank you for your support!!This extra episode is from the end of Season 3 from the Friday Bonus episodes for Apple Podcast subscribers and Patreon Members. In this episode I will be reading from 'How Al-Anon works for Families & Friends of Alcoholics' I am reading from chapter 6 - The Family Disease of Alcoholism and the section 'The Part we Play' and reflecting on my own life and how this can be used for your Soul Recovery. Statistics show that almost half of the population are negatively affected by the drug and alcohol addiction of a family member or friend- I think that number is much higher if we broaden to all addictions, abuse, neglect and dysfunction. Being human is not easy, however if we choose to turn the attention to ourselves and our own Soul Recovery journey we can find peace- even in the midst of chaos and dysfunction. As I read from this chapter, we can see how we have been caught up in the chaos of someone else and how we have the opportunity to see the part we play in the chaos. Once we recognize our part, we can make different choices and begin to respond in new an healthier ways to the people and circumstances in our lives. For more information about Rev. During the meeting, parents candidly share how they have reacted to the professional guidance provided in seeking family recovery. The group connected via Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic and includes mothers and fathers, some in recovery, married and not, with teenage to adult children. The parents are joined by Betsy Auray, a family and marriage therapist who serves as NY Regional Director, Caron Treatment Centers. On today’s episode, we have Josie Teresi back on the show, and she talks about her son’s addiction. When a family member becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol, not only do they face significant challenges, but it also impacts the rest of the family. It affects not only the individual with the “problem,” but also causes sickness within the entire family unit. The effects hardly go unnoticed: they can include broken trust, communication issues, financial problems, childhood trauma, PTSD, fear and anxiety, shame and guilt, lost relationships, and estrangement. Drug addiction causes the entire family unit to adapt to the chaos of addiction, negating their own health and well-being, creating new negative patterns to deal with loving someone suffering from the disease of addiction. All lives become interrupted and rattled. There is no doubt that addiction is a family disease. You can find Josie at josieteresi.com.
On today's episode, Jerry Moe, the Executive Director of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's National Children's Program, shares some of his story. Jerry has such a passion for helping the children of this family disease. The alarming statistics in the US show 5.7 million children under age 11 live in households with a parent who has a substance abuse disorder, and a third of those enter foster care as a result. The need for children to receive education, support seems obvious. Yet, as Jerry shares, they are often the last to gain this vital help. Congresswoman Madeleine Dean thought she understood addiction – but it wasn't until her son Harry Cunnane was struggling that she came to truly realize what it means when a loved one has a substance use disorder. Now Harry has been in recovery for more than eight years, and the mother and son have written a joint memoir, titled Under Our Roof: A Son's Battle for Recovery, a Mother's Battle for Her Son. With this book, the pair hope to share the lessons they've learned about addiction and recovery with other families impacted by this disease. In the 19th episode of Heart of the Matter, Elizabeth interviews Madeleine and Harry about what they gained from writing Under Our Roof, what it means when people refer to addiction as a family disease, and the importance of amplifying the possibility of recovery – not just the horror of active addiction. Today, Madeleine continues to serve Pennsylvania's fourth district, and Harry remains active in the addiction recovery community, even working as a resource director at the same treatment center where he originally sought help. For Episode 11 we are joined by Robin Piper-Lutz , CEO & Clinical Director of Turning Point of Tampa. Robin is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, a Masters Certified Addiction Professional and a National Certified Counselor. On today's episode we will talk with Robin about what family members can do to support their loved one and what they can do to also take care of themselves. Addiction is a family disease that can erode trust, weaken communication and destroy everyone in its path. Friends and loved ones often struggle with questions like “Am I helping or am I enabling?” Conversely, a lack of family and social support can have a detrimental effect on the recovery process. The good news is that recovery is possible for anyone who seeks it, including family members. www.al-anon.orgwww.nar-anon.orgwww.coda.orgwww.adultchildren.orgwww.sanon.orgwww.tpoftampa.comwww.tpoftampa.com/our-programswww.tpoftampa.com/our-programs/food-addiction-programwww.tpoftampa.com/family-support-through-process-addictionwww.thepointisrecoverypodcast.comwww.facebook.com/TurningPointofTampawww.twitter.com/TurningPointTPAwww.instagram.com/turningpointtpa/www.youtube.com/user/TurningPointofTampawww.facebook.com/ThePointisRecoveryPodcastwww.instagram.com/thepointisrecoverypodcast
Steve talks to us about his journey through early recovery and also his family upbringing. Addiction is a family disease and growing up with it, it's easy to see where addiction would just be a normal way of life. But that didn't stop him from turning things around for himself. He decided he wanted a better life and he made it happen. It wasn't easy, and it certainly wasn't a straight path, but in this episode, listen to how Steve has turns his life around, endures the challenges that early recovery brings, and becomes the success he is today. And listen to what it is like for him experiencing others he cares about going through the struggles as well.

During this episode of A Richer Life, host Rich Weingart speaks with Kristina Wandzilak, Founder and President of Full Circle Addiction and Recovery Services, and her mother Constance Curry. They dive deep into the truth, the pain and the love story of their family dealing with addiction, and how the healing process is not just for the addicted individual, but also for those that love them. Episode Highlights: Rich Weingart introduces Kristina Wandzilak and her mother Constance Curry. Kristina Wandzilak talks about how addiction impacts not just the individual addicted, but the people that they mean the most to. Constance talks about addiction in their family starting with her husband's alcoholism. What is their advice to someone with an addict in their family? Getting help is a journey. Rich reads a passage from their book The Lost Years. How did Constance's healing process go? Kristina and Constance talk about their love and respect for each other. How did Constance continue to get stronger despite her daughter being on the streets? How did Kristina process her mother's recovery and changes? What happened when Kristina tried to come back home during her treatment phase? How did Kristina find her path to recovery? Kristina was a lot more relatable and able to communicate in a more positive way when she recovered. How did they find forgiveness for Constance's ex-husband, who is Kristina's Dad? Everybody has the power to find themselves and build their strength and courage. Truth empowers us and others as well. 3 Key Points: One out of seven people in the world are affected by addiction in one way or another. When dealing with having a loved one suffering with addiction, reach out to others and know that you are not alone. Letting go is important for dealing with most problems. Tweetable Quotes: “Addicts don't change their behavior until it makes sense to them to change. Why wouldn't it? When we can live at home or have our rents paid or food in the cupboards and children take care of?” – Kristina Wandzilak “It is imperative for families to let go and it is so much a part of my work to support families and teach families about how to let go.” – Kristina Wandzilak “Addiction happens to family systems, not just individuals. You can have one person addicted and five or six people profoundly, deeply, hopelessly affected by this disease that slowly takes over homes." – Kristina Wandzilak “Kristina said, I was brave when I closed the door on her. I wasn't brave. I had just tried everything I knew. I didn't know anything else to do.” – Constance Curry “There were times that I was so angry, I didn't know what to do. Now what. And I expressed that anger sometimes. But, this was not an angry exchange. This was an accept, a surrender exchange.” – Constance Curry “The great change in Kristina was her humility. She didn't expect anything and she didn't ask for anything. During the first few weeks we all were a little on edge, not really knowing what to expect.” – Kristina Wandzilak Resources Mentioned: fullcirclerecoverycenter.net Kristina Wandzilak: The Lost Years : Surviving a Mother and Daughter's Worst Nightmare by Kristina Wandzilak and Constance Curry Instagram for Kristina Wandzilak

Coming Up for Air - Families Speak to Families about Addiction
This week's episode of Coming up for Air may have had some technical difficulty, but Laurie and Annie powered through it to welcome their guest The Alicia Cook! Understanding the "Family Disease" known as Alzheimer's requires that you understand that there are two (2) victim groups, the patient with the disease and the family members who care for the patient at home. I cannot stress this fact nearly enough, the caregivers are an endangered group. In danger of financial, emotional, mental, social and physical deterioration and premature death.
Much is said about Alzheimer's and well it should, but the family disease is just that, "The Family Disease". The caregiver is at risk physically, mentally and financially. They even have a reduced life span. This is Part 4 in my series on Alzheimer's Caregivers.
Going through the transition from dude to dad can be very stressful. For those who already may have some addiction issues, that process can make things worse for their addiction. For others, they may turn to substances such as alcohol or drugs, or behaviors that are fueled by addiction in order to deal with the stress. We wanted to get a better understanding of addiction and how dads are dealing with it. For Episode 38, we are joined by Chris McDuffie, CEO of Turning Point Addiction and Recovery Services. Chris helps us understand what addiction looks like and how it's often dealt with. It doesn't matter what race, age, education level, or income, addiction crosses all lines. People often feel like they are “functional” not realizing what their real potential is if they were not an addict. The #1 cause of addiction is prescription drugs. Doctors and dentists are really driving the addiction as well. Identifying yourself as an addict is someone that is not able to deal with life's issues and stresses in a normal matter. If it is effecting your life in any way, there are resources that can help. Reach out to a loved one, parent, teacher, religious leader, or anyone else and get help. Chris also holds that there is no effective drug prevention education in schools. The D.A.R.E. program has not been effective. He says we need to have evidence based education, have curriculum in the school, work with the community, and work with parents. You want to delay drug use as much as possible, have an open dialogue with your kids and be sure to be a good role model for them. The heart of every show is our guests and their recovery stories. Everyone who participates on the show is a volunteer, whose willingness to honestly share their experience, strength, and hope helps keeps us all sober. In honor of Father’s Day, Co-Host Amanda’s father, Frank, who is also in recovery, will join us on the show. Frank will share his own story and talk about what it was like for him to see his daughter showing signs that she was headed down the same path. It is often said that alcoholism is a family disease. In this case, that certainly seems to be true, but this is proof that families can and do recover together.
World AIDS Day, observed on December 1 every year, is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV, and commemorate people who have died. If you understand how HIV is transmitted, how it can be prevented, and the reality of living wih HIV today, you can use this knowledg to take care of your health and the health of others. You will also help ensure that everyone living with HIV is treated fairly, and with respect and understanding. November's show will feature the book, One Family's AIDS, by host, J'son M. Lee. One Family’s AIDS is the story of Gene Alexander McCoy - a young, educated African-American man who finds himself in a race for time to make peace with his family and God upon being diagnosed with HIV. The story, told from four different perspectives, chronicles Gene's life as he confronts such issues as HIV/AIDS, family, abandonment and homophobia. With the help of his over-bearing mother, a nurturing grandmother, and an uncle who doesn't feel comfortable talking about Gene's sexuality or disease, we learn the complexities of love and relationships, the damaging results of fear and shame, and how the relentless quest for the truth ultimately leads us back to each other. Our guest host will be Levon Putney, News Anchor/Reporter at WCBS 880 News.
More than a few years ago a small group of parents began to meet in a therapists office. They talked about their struggles to stay sane while living with the insanity of their behaviorally or addictively challenged kids. They shared their fears, their shame, their struggles with difficult decisions and their small victories over staying out of the destructive vortex. Some of these folks started their own self-directed support group for parents and it has grown exponentially. Meet Marcia, Jeff and Beth to talk about the desperate need for parent support and recovery.

Surrounded by Alcoholism as a kid she was predisposed but how could this happen to a nice girl like Karen? A good marriage, great kids and wanting for little…was it a mid-life crisis or a mid-life CRISIS? She fought a lengthy and costly battle with alcohol for ten long years and finally surrendered and accepted the truth. She changed drinks, changed towns and did everything to avoid it but in the end, staring out the kitchen window alone and afraid at 1 AM she knew. She's been through much in sobriety but has made recovery her priority. Today she's a happy survivor.
