Happy Halloween B-oo's Crew! This Halloween we travel to Massachusetts to visit the worlds most notorious asylum, Danvers State Hospital! A Kirkbride building known as "The Kirkbride, The Witches Castle, Hell House on the Hill and The Castle on the Hill". There are many places that claim to be "The most haunted," but Danvers, being the inspiration for H.P Lovecraft's Arkham Sanitorium and then becoming the model for Arkham Asylum in Batmnan, seems to hold that title! Also known as the birthplace of the prefrontal lobotomy, Danvers was built to be a gentle care facility, but by the 1930's that would all change. Straightjackets, electroshock therapy, hydro therapy, lobotomies and many other "treatments" were used here....including the "Spread Eagle Therapy!"This is truly the house of horrors. SO get ready B-oo's Crew, because this one will have you re-thinking going to the hospital!Do you have a story you'd like read or played on the show? Hannah's been on vacation, where she read her pants off. She's got books. And she and Sam have a bet as to whether any of you will take advantage of the big discount code embedded in this episode. We'll see what happens. As for books, we tackle: - "Margo's Got Money Troubles," by Rufi Thorpe - "The Most," by Jessica Anthony - "Death at the Sanitorium," by Ragnar Jónasson - "Creation Lake," by Rachel Kushner - "You Are Here," by David Nicholls Then we finish up with a thought experiment on why book sequels don't use a "II," live movies.
"Dr. Grimshaw's Sanitarium". Take missing bodies in a mental hospital and add a mad scientist or two! Stir well for horror. The system cue has been deleted. The script was used previously on "Dimension X" on September 22, 1950 and subsequently on "Future Tense" during July, 1976 and on "Monitor" during March, 1974. This story is the same as the one originally broadcast on 22nd of September 1950. What you will hear transcribed in the next half hour represents either a magnificent hoax or the true explanation of the famous Grimshaw sanatorium scandal, which made the headlines back in 1947. The manuscript upon which this account is based was removed by the New York State Police from a fountain pen cover found in the doorway to Dr Grimshaw's study. We offer this manuscript as evidence only and whether it is authentic or not you must judge for your self… Airdate: 1955-07-14 Source: https://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/ Source: https://archive.org/

Did you know that in 1902, August Engelhardt travelled from Germany to a small island in the South Pacific and tried to build a community based mostly in worship of the sun, being naked all the time, and literally only eating coconuts? He tried for seventeen years. Oh yeah. This is a weird one. We're kicking off Paranormal April with an episode dedicated to one of the most haunted buildings in North America: The Waverly Hills Sanatorium. Nestled atop a secluded hill in Kentucky, this monumental structure once served as a beacon of hope for tuberculosis patients during the early 20th century. Through a blend of historical insights and captivating narratives, we'll explore the sanatorium's inception, its innovative yet haunting treatments, and the societal impact it had during its peak. Uncover the tales of perseverance and tragedy that echo through its abandoned halls, painting a picture of an era grappling with a health crisis. But the story doesn't end with the closing of its medical wards. As night falls, the shadows of Waverly Hills whisper of unresolved spirits and unexplained phenomena, making it a hotspot for paranormal investigators and thrill-seekers. Stephanie and Andrew will delve into the chilling accounts of hauntings that have propelled this former sanatorium into the limelight of the supernatural. From the legendary tunnel known as the "death chute" to the ghostly appearances in the children's ward, we'll sift through the myths and eyewitness reports that have solidified Waverly Hills' reputation as one of the most haunted places in America. Tune in, if you dare, to a journey through history and beyond, where the past is anything but forgotten. - **Join our Patreon

Sanitorium? Sanitarium? Is there really a difference? Well, that depends on who you ask (of course..) Either way, that's where we are, this time in North Dakota! Sometimes lovingly referred to as the sanitorium of DEATH, this hospital is barely a shell of its formal self, actually recently being condemned due to its unsafe conditions. But those that have been fortunate enough to investigate the grounds all agree on one thing; this place, is HAUNTED. So since we can't visit it any more, let's all live vicariously through The Paranormal Files once more, and see what spooky things they found this time. Spoilers, some scares aren't always paranormal ... In the 'Healing Forest' around Paimio Sanatorium, Finland, Alvar and Aino Aalto's architectural masterpiece, a woodpecker works away near a babbling brook. The 'forest stillness' bristles with the activity of insects, birds, and power walkers. It's not long before the distant thrum of dirt bikes and other vehicles adds to the hubbub. Recorded by Julian Weaver.
In the 13th episode of A is for Architecture's third series, I spoke with the remarkable architect and writer, Juhani Pallasmaa, former professor of architecture and dean at the Helsinki University of Technology, now incorporated as Aalto University. Pallasmaa's work has been of huge importance to architects now active in the transformation of our towns and cities, with his description of a tactile, material and immanent embodiment visible in the work of almost all good, urban work now being built. His written work particularly stands, in a way, in counterpoint to the superficial and the visual, that occularcentric tendency born of late capitalist starcitecture, and the preferencing of the image over depth and the experiential. Central to our discussion were two of Pallasmaa's great works – The Eyes of the Skin (John Wiley & Sons, 1996) and The Thinking Hand (John Wiley & Sons, 2009), both of which are worthy of continued study. You can listen to Jonathan Hale speak about Juhani's inspiration, the phenomenologist philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty, on A is for Architecture here. Before he and I recorded this episode, Juhani had received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation, at the Sanitorium itself, where he also gave a talk entitled "The Ethical Meaning of Architecture: The relational and existential essence of art". A joy and an undeserved privilege, getting to speak to a hero like this. Available on Spotify, iTunes, Google Podcasts and Amazon Music. Dangerous Assignment was an NBC radio drama starring Brian Donlevy broadcast in the US 1949–1953. It preceded the James Bond character and books and may well have inspired them. "The Commissioner" sent US special agent Steve Mitchell to exotic locales all over the world, where he would encounter adventure and international intrigue in pursuit of some secret. Each show would always open with a brief teaser scene from the episode to follow. After the intro, Steve Mitchell would be summoned to the office of 'The Commissioner', the regional head of an unnamed US State Department agency created to address international unrest as it affected U.S. interests. "The Commissioner" would give background information, explain the current situation and tell Steve his assignment. Steve's cover identity, in almost all his adventures, was that of a suave debonair foreign correspondent for an unnamed print publication — his assignments invariably involved deceit, trickery, and violence, all tied together into a successful resolution by the end of the episode. The history of state-run hospitals or sanatoriums in this country run deep with many wounds associated with it. As one would presume, the history of death, neglect and sometimes just outright abuse leaves a blemish on the property and quite often, there is residual energy there, even paranormal activity. One such property questioned is that of Indiana State Sanatorium, that until recently, no one really knew what was going on there. I really enjoyed Sarah Pearse's debut novel, The Sanitorium. Though I was not happy with the "why," I was left intrigued by its ending and was very much looking forward to her second novel, The Retreat. If you're looking for that ending to resolve itself in this book, you will be disappointed. If you're looking for a fast-paced "who dunnit," you might be OK. It was a 3-star from me. Good, but by no means great. In contrast, I gave The Sanitorium a 4-star. On today's 82nd Episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm very happy to welcome the lovely, charming, and mega-talented New York Times Bestselling Author and Reese Witherspoon Book Club Winner, Sarah Pearse. Sarah not only has a unique way to "spin a yarn," but she has an engaging way to twist a story that leads you in one direction, only to redirect you another way. When you meet her, you instantly adore her upbeat personality, while wondering how someone so nice could create such evil. Join us as we chat about writing technique, what makes a propulsive thriller, how we both adore stories that grab us by the neck and drag us along for the ride. Sarah also has terrific answers to my #RapidFireQuestions, which you've learned by now, aren't all that rapid, but are always a lot of fun, as they force the guest to think fast on their feet. I think this is part of the show that Sarah really enjoyed. Join hosts Mike, Melissa, and Michelle from Time Forgot as they talk about their investigation at Lava Hotsprings Inn in Lava Hotsprings Idaho. The sanitorium was once used to treat World War II soldiers suffering from the aftermath of the war. They believed the hot springs offered supernatural healing properties. What they didn't realize was that the mineral baths also acted as a conductor for paranormal activity. The hot springs attracts thousands of visitors each year seeking its healing benefits. Many of the visitors end up getting more than they bargained for. www.destination-mystery.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/destination-mystery/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/destination-mystery/support

The Seaside is a historic medical facility at 36 Shore Road in Waterford, Connecticut. It is nationally significant as the first institution designed for heliotropic treatment of children suffering from tuberculosis. It has also been a home for the elderly, a medical hospital and a facility to treat the mentally handicapped. Rumors state that the death toll of Seaside Sanatorium summed up to the low hundreds. This is mostly due to the high mortality rate of tuberculosis and of course the elderly. This has left an imprint on the building which is said to still exist to today. Users who worked in the building claim they would feel cold spots, hear footsteps and strange sounds even while alone Stay safe out there. With love, Saaniya and Maddie x Sources: https://www.damnedct.com/seaside-sanatorium-waterford/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seaside_(Waterford,_Connecticut) https://www.trytoscare.me/legend/seaside-sanatorium-waterford-ct-2/ https://www.thefisherman.com/hot-spot/seaside-park-waterford-ct/
