A "dysfunctional family epic" is how Ben Wilson's award-winning script Homemade Takeaways is described. The comedy-drama won the 2020 Playmarket Playwrights B4 25 competition and it's finally heading onto the stage. It's set in small-town New Zealand during Christmas with the 'chosen family' of four. These include a primary school teacher wants to write violent children's fiction, and a recently dumped self-help expert who is self-destructing. Ben Wilson talks with Lynn Freeman about Homemade Takeaways and the cachet the phrase "award-winning" gives a young writer. Homemade Takeaways premieres at Bats Theatre in Te Whanganui A Tara Wellington on Tuesday 22 November.
When Wellington's Downstage Theatre Company closed in 2013, many feared that was the end of the road for its long-time home, the Hannah Playhouse. After all, the 49-year-old concrete building stands on prime real estate, opposite Bats Theatre and the Embassy Cinema. But the charitable trust that owns the Hannah has made a three-year pilot scheme with Wellington City Council to invest $200,000 a year in it. It will be used primarily as an arts incubation space for top performers to develop their work. There may occasionally be public performances there too. First to benefit from the opportunity is Footnote Dance Company - rehearsals are under way for a new show to premiere later this month. Lynn Freeman talks with Stephen Blackburn, the council's city events manager, who's known the building since childhood. His father Ken was involved with Downstage Theatre right from the start: The Footnote Theatre production ChoreoCo 2022: Mea Uma opens at the Hannah Playhouse on 16 November.
It's astonishing what magic one actor can produce on stage when they have a great script and the ability to play many roles simply through movement and voice.. TAHI - New Zealand Festival of Solo Performance brings together soloists - from emerging first or second-timers through to well-established performers - from around Aotearoa for 10 days of performances and conversations about this specialist theatrical form. This year marks the fourth TAHI and it'll be hosted in Wellington - 18 shows across four venues and ten days. Lynn Freeman talks with two of this year's participants - Sacha Copland and Helen Fletcher. TAHI: New Zealand Festival of Solo Performance starts on September 8 at Bats Theatre in Te Whanganui A Tara/Wellington.
After asking their fans on social media which story they'd most like to see turned into an irreverent play, Wellington's A Slightly Isolated Dog company chose the Trojan War from the dozens of suggestions. Once they delved deeper into the story of Paris, Helen and the fall of Troy, they discovered parallels with our current chaotic times. The Trojan War is the third in a series of reinterpreted classics - after Don Juan and Jekyll & Hyde - that were performed around the country, as well as Australia and Edinburgh. Director Leo Gene Peters first explains to Lynn Freeman the unorthodox play selection process. The Trojan War premieres at BATS Theatre in Wellington on Tuesday, before heading to Auckland's Basement Theatre from August the 23rd.
In the digital age and the Covid era, how do you get people out to a play?
Maori playwright Sherilee Kahui wants to shake things up with her new work, Mokomoko. She's asking some hard questions and presenting some hard truths in the play, about a woman suffering from a personal trauma that has its roots in a genocide dating back several generations. Worse still, it's an atrocity has never been acknowledged. Mokomoko tells of a woman whose road to recovery from personal trauma is to discover her origin story, Sherilee tells Lynn Freeman she wants her play to empower Wahine Maori. Mokomoko - written and directed by Sherilee Kahui - will open on the 10th of May at Wellington's Bats Theatre in Wellington.

A new production BIGTIMECLOCKS examines how self-worth is all too often linked to productivity. The team behind it, O+P works, is certainly productive - this show runs for a challenging 4 hours at Wellington's BATS Theatre. Lynn Freeman speak so one of the co-writers, Olivia Mahood.
Like other operations of its type, Wellington's landmark independent theatre BATS is gearing up for life under a new kind of alert level 2. Fifty is the maximum number of people will be allowed at event venues in most of New Zealand. What will it practically mean? How are theatres preparing? Is it even possible to turn a profit in this sector at the moment? BATS general manager Jonathan Hendry spoke to Susie Ferguson.
Have you ever looked at a lone, cold tap in a public toilet and wondered what it would say if it could talk? Nor have we, but that's the basis of comedian Barnie Duncan's show Tap Head, complete with a giant tap that he wears while in character. Barnie returned to New Zealand in October after six years working the comedy clubs there. It was during that time that he came up with Tap Head and made the prop. He brought it into the studio for the interview. Lynn Freeman asked Barnie about his love of the absurd and surreal. Bernie Duncan and Tap Head are on at Bats Theatre in Wellington from July 14.
More than 20 hours of interviews recorded during and since the New Zealand-wide lockdown in March last year, have been distilled into a stage show called Transmission. The key figures for creators Stuart McKenzie and Miranda Harcourt were epidemiologist Professor Michael Baker, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson. The aim was to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how they were thinking and feeling at the time. The verbatim stage play is about to premiere in Wellington. Lynn Freeman talks to three of the cast: Sophie Hambleton, who plays Jacinda Ardern, Tom Knowles who plays Grant Robertson, and Tim Spite, who returns to the stage to portray Michael Baker. Transmission premieres at Bats Theatre in Wellington on Tuesday, April 20.

London's King's Head Theatre has a special place in England's live drama scene. When it opened in the early Seventies it was described as the first pub theatre since Shakespeare's day, and it went on to triumph with award winning productions of everything from Stoppard to Trainspotting and grand opera. And it's also where actor/writer/director/producer Katherine Wyeth grew up. Katherine was a theatre kid and she's about to share that experience in a solo show at Wellington's Bats Theatre. It's called Girl in the loft.

An in-depth conversation with Sameena Zehra - storyteller, actor, activist, artist, comedian...we talk about her life and work and how she finds and keeps projects that keep her afloat and nourish the soul. We spent time previewing the then-upcoming (now postponed) show at BATS Theatre, White Men. But we talked about a lot of other things beyond that - and fingers crossed the show will return to have its hour on the stage at some point this year. There's a lot in this chat besides all that.

Sarah Marie Rooney and Sasha Dylan Bell are photographers who collaborated on a conceptual photographic project titled “Fear of Dreaming”. This work explores the inner conflict, following a dreamer who has lost her way. The portraits which solicited the involvement of a trained dancer explored the process of being overwhelmed by fear and of moving through and out of it. Sarah Marie Rooney grew up in Connecticut and obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts, in Musical Theatre, from Syracuse University. After graduating she continued her vocal studies in the UK and New Zealand, before performing more than fifty solo vocal recitals and operas in the United States, Australia, the UK, and New Zealand. Sarah was also the Business Manager and Executive Theater Producer at BATS Theatre, Producer of Summer Shakespeare, and the Producer for Young and Hungry Theatre Company. In addition to performing and producing, she taught and directed classes for theater, voice, and stage at the Wellington Theatre for Performing Arts (NZ), Oregon Children’s Theatre and School (USA), and St. Mary’s in Sydney (AU). She also maintained a private singing studio for ten years. A photographer for animal welfare and rescue organizations, Sarah documents events for Best Friends Animal Society and Wags and Walks. When not photographing animals, she is capturing everyday life on the street or planning her next travel adventure. Sarah lives in Manhattan Beach, California with her furry, four-legged family (two rescue dogs and one rescue cat). Sasha Dylan Bell is an artist based in Los Angeles, with an interest in portrait photography and cinematic storytelling. In 2015 Sasha was Creative Arts Emmy-nominated for his editing work on Got Your 6, a documentary chronicling battle-worn soldiers and their struggle to find a new ’normal’ in returning home from Afghanistan. He currently lives in Los Angeles and is at work on the photography series, Wise, a gentle exploration of the lives of the elderly, along with directing & producing the documentary, The Regulars, a love letter to the unusual personalities of Hollywood Boulevard and editing on David Makes Man for Oscar-winning creator, Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight). She is also the 2018 recipient of the Scotland-New Zealand playwriting exchange (BATS Theatre, Toi Poneke Arts Centre and Playmarket NZ). LOST AT SEA, her first full-length play, was developed in 2013 with award winning Stellar Quines Theatre Company and is now in pre-production with Perth Theatre for 2019. After graduating from Toi Whakaari: The New Zealand Drama School in 2000, Heather has been an actor, producer and director in Wellington and across New Zealand. In 2008 Heather joined the team at the biennial New Zealand Festival where she worked predominantly in marketing, partnerships and audience development until 2016. That year she directed Fleabag for Centrepoint Theatre, and joined the team at BATS Theatre in Wellington as the Programme Manager and Co-General Manager. BATS has been a hotspot for Wellington artists since 1989, providing a supportive, professional and accessible theatre venue that fosters the development of practitioners, audiences and New Zealand performance work. In this episode: We talk about the history of BATS in Wellington, NZ and how artists and producers can get involved. The reason why (we think!) there isn’t as much touring between Australia and New Zealand and why we should be doing more. We discuss what a program manager does in a major independent venues and the misconceptions about the role and the difficulty in self-producing and wearing too many hats.
When we approached James about performing at What We Talk About, he had two ideas for obsessions, Pokemon or his porn addiction. While we love Pokemon, we could not help but ask him to talk about his porn addiction. See James Roque in James Roque Wants to Show you Something, at Q Theatre this week, and in Frickin Dangerous Bro's Money in the Bank at Basement Theatre this week and BATS Theatre next week.

It's usually straightforward to know when you're experiencing something for the first time, but how do you know if it's the last? Is it easier when you don't know you'll never do the thing again? Or to start something rather than finish it? Recorded live at BATS Theatre on 11 August 2016. Featuring stories from Michael Howard, Freya Sadgrove, and Jess Brien. Hosted and produced by Jennifer O'Sullivan.
Stories of times we've wanted to stop and start again, of our favourite TV and film reboots, or maybe even of our fond memories of 90s Canadian-American CGI-animated action-adventure television series Reboot. Recorded live at BATS Theatre on 14 July 2016. Featuring stories from Kristine Bartley, Wiremu Tuhiwai, Matt Powell, and Lori Leigh. Hosted by Jonny Potts, and brought together by new Wellington producer Jennifer O'Sullivan.
April's issue was loosely inspired by the hit Improv TV show ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ Except it's storytelling and there may not be as many Hawaiian shirts paired with khaki trousers. However we did what we could to dress the part. Did Alice Brine just theme this show because she thought up the name and wanted to make it work? Pretty much. Recorded live at BATS Theatre on 14 April 2016. Featuring stories from Jennifer O'Sullivan, Brad Zimmerman, Nik Bruce Smith and Jessica Mearns. Hosted and produced by Alice Brine. Audio engineering by Oliver Devlin.
Recorded live at BATS Theatre, 17 March 2016. Featuring stories from Eamonn Marra, Kate Robertson, Eli Joseph and Jennifer O'Sullivan. Hosted and produced by Alice Brine. Audio engineering by Oliver Devlin.

You can see Alice in the New Zealand International Comedy Festival in BRINESTORM at BATS Theatre in Wellington from 26-30 April and at The Basement Theatre in Auckland from 10-14 May buy tickets and find out more information at comedyfestival.co.nz
Adam Goodall took the opportunity to speak at What We Talk About to explore two of his obsessions; he talked about Final Destination 3, but he did it in the style of a This American Life or 99% Invisible style public radio documentary. He essentially hijacked our podcast to do one of his own. His obsession with both of these things is so great he has expanded this 15 minute talk into a full length hour long public defence of Final Destination 3 radio documentary in the 2016 NZ Fringe Festival. It's called Extremely Loud and Incredibly Gross and it runs from the 22nd to the 26th Feb at BATS Theatre.
