Show #799   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 4th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Welcome to two new Patreon Producers!   MARK HEINLE   SCOTT BERGER   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   DYSON CAR REVEALED IN FULL AS TIME CALLED ON ELECTRIC SUV PROJECT "Dyson has released new images of its abandoned electric SUV project, giving us a complete look inside and out of the firm’s abandoned Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace rival." says AutoExpress: "In April, Dyson released the first official picture of the car - a side profile shot backing up patent drawings previously published by trademarking authorities. Now though, we can see the design in greater detail, in particular the highly aerodynamic shape Dyson derived for the SUV. Huge, 24-inch aerodynamic wheels are fitted - something Sir James Dyson says is central to the car’s design, not only from an aesthetic standpoint but also for low rolling resistance and ride comfort. Smaller details include flush door-handles, tiny camera stalks in place of the wing mirrors and protruding, squared off wheel arches. Around the back, LED tail lights are positioned high on each corner of the tailgate. There is no traditional instrument panel - a head up display projects onto the windscreen, right in front of the driver. Almost every button to control the car is on the steering wheel, while further displays sit at each side of the dashboard - live feeds for the camera based side mirror system. The car’s climate control system uses air filtration technology developed from Dyson’s home products. Despite the shutdown and gradual restart, the timeline for the Amazon delivery vans is still on track, according to a statement from Amazon released Thursday. In September, Amazon announced it had ordered 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from Rivian as part of its commitment to The Climate Pledge to become net zero carbon by 2040. Vans will begin delivering to customers in 2021, as previously planned. About 10,000 electric vehicles will be on the road as early as 2022 and all 100,000 vehicles will be on the road by 2030, Amazon said in a statement Thursday." writes TechCrunch: "Rivian has pushed the start of production on the R1T and R1S to 2021. The company had initially planned to start production and begin deliveries of the electric pickup truck and SUV in late 2020."   https://techcrunch.com/2020/05/28/rivians-amazon-electric-delivery-van-still-on-track-as-factory-reopens/   THE PORSCHE TAYCAN IS NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER IN AUSTRALIA @PORSCHEAUS 3 Jun "The Porsche Taycan is now available to order in Australia. All three models, Taycan Turbo S, Turbo and 4S, will arrive from December 2020. Full story on the Australian arrival of the first-ever electric Porsche sportscar." The Taycan 4S, Turbo and Turbo S are now available to order via Porsche Centres around Australia, with the Porsche Car Configurator now live with local specifications and pricing. The Taycan Turbo S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds, the same acceleration figures as a 911 GT2 RS. tOP SPEED 260KM/H. It has a combined range of up to 405 km# when the battery is fully charged. For charging at 400 volt charging points, a 150 kW on-board DC-Charger is standard in Australia. Porsche Cars Australia has partnered with Chargefox, Australia’s largest EV charging network operator. Taycan owners will receive a complimentary three year subscription to the Chargefox Ultra-Rapid DC charging network (up to 350 kW).   https://newsroom.porsche.com/en_AU/2020/products/porsche-taycan-australian-product-highlights-21049.html   NEW SOUTH WALES TO RAMP UP ITS ELECTRIC VEHICLE FLEET "In Australia, the New South Wales government has tripled its procurement targets for new hybrid and all-electric vehicles as part of its passenger vehicle fleets, according to local media." reports electrive: "This means that the NSW government will be purchasing around 900 new hybrid or electric vehicles each year, with around 300 of these vehicles being all-electric models. The NSW Treasury said that they actually achieved their 10 per cent fleet target last year. This means that of the 2,891 vehicles purchased, 692 of these were either hybrid or fully-electric vehicles."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/02/nsw-to-ramp-up-its-electric-vehicle-fleets/   FORD WILL BE USING VOLKSWAGEN’S MEB ARCHITECTURE FOR ITS FUTURE EVS "The Ford-Volkswagen alliance has been brewing for a couple of years now. Things started looking stale in between, but it looks like everything is getting back on track. "According to Ford Authority, the alliance between the two automakers is expected to be finalized by the end of June. Also, the German automaker’s board has approved several projects, one of which is a new Ford electric vehicle that will be underpinned by Volkswagen’s MEB platform. Do you think it will be a badge-engineered ID.4 crossover?" asks TopSpeed.com: "the new EV will be built specifically for the European markets where the emission norms are a lot more stringent than in the U.S. The idea will be to develop either a small hatch or a crossover. The latter makes more sense considering the customer preference and market trend, but since the European countries will be receiving the Mach-E, Ford would be interested in building something smaller. Perhaps, even a hatch could be in the reckoning."   https://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/ford-s-alliance-with-volkswagen-means-the-next-ford-ev-will-be-a-badge-engineered-id4-crossover-ar188603.html   THE WORLD RX TEAM FUTURE-PROOFING RALLY CLASSICS "Front-running World Rallycross team GC Kompetition is known for running modern Renault machinery, whether it’s the Prodrive-built Mégane or the in-house developed Clio R.S. But the ambitious and comparatively young outfit is mashing up old and new by entering the world of restomodded electrified classic cars." says DirtFish: "Based on iconic models such as the Lancia Delta Integrale, the limited selection of cars will be handpicked by the French squad, before being converted to an electric drivetrain using a kit developed in-house at the team’s technical centre. The whole car, including the conversion and the necessary hardware, will be sold as one complete package."   https://dirtfish.com/rallycross/world-rx/the-world-rx-team-future-proofing-rally-classics/   MASERATI GHIBLI HYBRID TEASER VIDEO ELECTRIFIES THE BRAND'S HQ "While we've known about the plan to create a Maserati Ghibli Hybrid for a while, the Italian brand has now released a brief teaser video for the electrified model. The clip shows lightning striking the company's trident at the headquarters and it glowing afterward, sending a shock through the whole building." says Motor1: Maserati originally intended to debut the Ghibli Hybrid in April at the 2020 Beijing Motor Show, but the COVID-19 outbreak forced the event's cancellation. The only technical detail that came out about the sedan at that time was that it allegedly used a plug-in hybrid system."   https://www.motor1.com/news/426715/maserati-ghibli-hybrid-teaser/   LAUNCH OF THE ABT E-TRANSPORTER 6.1 WITH AERO PACKAGE The beginning of June sees the start of production of the ABT e-Transporter 6.1. As with its predecessor, ABT e-Line, an official premium partner of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, is responsible for converting the vehicle to electric drive.  The ABT e-Transporter 6.1 delivers a maximum output of 83 kW and a maximum torque of 200 Nm. The vehicle will be available with top speed options of either 90 km/h or 120 km/h. The range is between 105 and 138 km depending upon specification (according to WLTP), (gross) battery capacity is 37.3 kWh.   https://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/20831/launch-of-the-abt-e-transporter-6-1-with-aero-package   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Critics say EVs are on the for the rich, so what do you view as ‘affordable’ prices?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 227 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. A really big show on the cards this week. We’re headed to China for the Beijing Motor Show. Joel Helmes was the guest of our mates at Haval and he brings news of lots of weird and wonderful cars, and he has a few surprises in store. Simon Lai has been racing around in an often overlooked sports car - the Nissan 370Z, we'll bring you all the details. We've got details on a few new Volkswagen's too, including the all-new and very svelte Arteon. The cheapest ever VW Golf GTi, the Original, and we've discovered a new bench mark in the small car class, the all-new VW Polo - even in base model form it's a cracker. Rachel Franco returns with more madness - she's keen to share stories on cars that have been given a name. For example, she had a Barina with a gender crisis called Barry. You can imagine how this will pan out! Kevin Hepworth, from Kia Australia, joins us with details on a refreshed version of Australia’s best selling people mover, the Carnival. We'll take you for a drive in the very beautiful new BMW 630GT, and have lots of laughs along the way. Join us for another week of Behind the Wheel.

Report On Long Term Battery Degradation, Luxury EVs From Pininfarina And Maybach | 16 April 2018

EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Monday 16th April 2018. The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 15th April, shows 16,303 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,785 Model 3’s being built per week. BATTERY DEGRADATION Battery degradation is still largely the unknown long term question mark hanging over EV’s. And that’s not because there’s anything wrong with the technology, in general, it’s just the modern era or electric cars are a few years old rather than far longer for ICE cars. In Holland a group of Tesla fans on their forum are gathering data from 350 Teslas and the results have just been updated. The previous results were already very positive but now it seems there is less than 10% degradation after 160,000 miles. Electrek reports: “The data clearly shows that for the first 50,000 miles (100,000 km), most Tesla battery packs will lose about 5% of their capacity, but after the 50,000-mile mark, the capacity levels off and it looks like it could be difficult to make a pack degrade by another 5%. The trend line currently suggests that the average battery pack could cycle through over 300,000 km (186,000) before coming close to 90% capacity” One of the cars reporting into this study has done just over 280,000kms and it has just under 90% battery remaining. Of course we don’t know how many Tesla’s were supercharged every day and which ones were slow charged up to 70% diligently. Although EVs may be relatively new, the 18650 cells which make up the Model S battery packs are quite established now, indeed Tesla only chose that technology when they first started because it was the cost-effective proven choice. The temperature management is surely the key to this, even recently the Nissan LEAF without any thermal management has come under fire with people wanting to rapid charge it multiple times in a row. One commenter summed it up nicely: “By 160,000 miles on various gasoline engine cars I have owned in my life and (not including regular oil/filter changes), I've had to replace: a manifold gasket, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, dropped valve, muffler, and a head gasket. Granted, this wasn't all on the same car. But it is something you will NEVER have to replace on any electric car. To me, 10 percent battery degradation seems acceptable as a trade off.” The next things which spring to mind, how long will a battery actually last? Certainly longer than the other parts on the car I’d hazard to predict. And longer than the car itself probably, depending on where you live. What does this also mean for 2nd life batteries? Well it’s good from the perspective that they will be usable, but bad in that not so many cars will have them to spare.   PININFARINA EV “Plans are in place to launch high-end electric cars under the Pininfarina name” reports MotorAuthority. “The new Automobili Pininfarina was launched on Friday in Rome, where Pininfarina parent company Mahindra was competing in this weekend's Formula E Championship round. The cars will be luxurious, highly advanced and offer extreme performance. The first model arrives this year as the production version of the H2 Speed concept that was shown at the 2016 Geneva auto show. The H2 Speed is a track-only electric supercar that swaps a battery for a hydrogen fuel cell stack, and just 12 will be built. But confirmed Friday, a much more potent model will arrive in 2020 to serve as the flagship of the brand. It will reportedly use technology developed by Rimac as well as Mahindra's Formula E team”. Pininfarina claims that the 2020 hypercar will be capable of 0-62mph in less than two seconds, rivalling the next-generation Tesla Roadster and the Rimac C_Two. 0-186mph is targeted in less than 12 seconds, while a top speed of 249mph has been touted. A production run of around 90 examples is planned for now, with a 311 mile range. TopGear point out “It’ll also come with Level 3+ autonomy, too: not fully autonomous, and the driver will be needed for certain conditions, but a step up from simple lane-keep assist and radar cruise, for example”   MAYBACH EV Mercedes-Maybach revealed a new teaser for what looks like a concept for a new EV. The car is set to debut in just a few weeks at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show. This might be the Maybach SUV we reported on a few weeks back”: say AutoBlog: “It's difficult to make out too many details, but it definitely looks different than the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 that we've seen floating around for the past couple of years. A close-up shot of the steering wheel shows the soft blue glow that Mercedes has put on the EQ-branded concept cars. Other images show clean white leather, rose gold trim and a pair of seats flanking a flower-encrusted panel.”   WHEN YOU REALLY NEED A BIG MAC And finally, even when you’re testing one of the worlds best EV sports cars, you still need a Big Mac or 20 nugs. InsideEVs report a Porsche Mission E was seen at a drive thru McDonald’s. They have translated the video description: “During a night refueling near Stuttgart, we ran into a Porsche Mission E Test Mule. During the difficult testing of hungry – the driver went for Big Mac. Thanks to the front line, he couldn’t get away. Check out the video and photos of the prototype model that is likely to unseat Tesla from the throne.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Monday 26th March 2018. SOME #MONDAYMOTIVATION A tweet from Christina Bu last night highlighted the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) 2017 Global Electric Vehicle report. The report predicts electric car stocks will range from between nine million and 20 million by 2020 and between 40 million and 70 million by 2025. The World Economic Forum continues: “However, electric vehicles are not emissions-free. While these vehicles obviously run on electricity, that electricity typically comes from a mix of emissions-intensive fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and power from renewables. That is, unless you live in country like Norway, which generates virtually all of its electricity from hydropower. But Norway is the exception rather than the rule. At the other end of the scale, China, whose electric vehicle market accounts for 40% of all sales globally, drives the most emissions-intensive electric cars. That is according to data from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), which shows the majority of China’s electricity comes from coal. According to BNEF’s data, electric vehicles in China produce 188.5 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per mile, the most of any country globally. In comparison, electric vehicles in the United Kingdom produce just over 76 grams of CO2, while in France just 2.7 grams are produced per mile.” And what about the average for a gas powered car? They typically produce about 250 grams of CO2 per mile, BNEF says. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/03/electric-cars-are-still-coal-powered   PORSCHE NOT LOOKING OVER THEIR SHOULDER AT TESLA The Porsche Mission E has been much talked about recently, from the spinoff Gran Turismo concept we saw at Geneva, to the Audi e-tron GT and now Bentley both saying they will build very fast, luxurious sports cars on the Porsche platform. It’s fair to say they’ll want some Tesla Model S and maybe even X buyers to choose them instead. However now the CEO Oliver Blume claims Tesla are not in their minds. He said ‘Tesla is not a benchmark for us’ at their annual press conference. And whilst they might not want YOU to think of them at the same time, they do have their own Model S and Model X to do exactly that, and benchmark them against the Mission E, as they’ve been seen together in youtube videos. And whilst some people don’t think of Tesla as a sports car like Porsche, remember the standard, basic entry level Model S 75D will do 0-60 in 4.2 second. One area Porsche can legitimately say they are ahead of Tesla on is charging, as they insist their 800 volt 350kW chargers will soon be installed at all Porsche dealers in North America. https://electrek.co/2018/03/25/tesla-is-not-a-benchmark-porsche-mission-e-model-s/   iX3 GETS CLOSER BMWBlog say “We recently learned that BMW could reveal its all-electric iX3crossover at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show later this year.  it seems to still be in early production phases at the moment, as a BMW iX3 test mule was just caught doing some winter testing in the Scandinavian snow.” They’ve put a link to the Autocar website which I’ll link to in the show notes. I know some people are cynical and might ask how you’d know they were testing the electric version. The stickers down the side of it saying “Electric Test Vehicle” are a bit of a giveaway! https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/bmw-ix3-introduce-brands-fifth-generation-ev-power-2020   FORMULA E TEST CAR HITS THE TRACK DS is the first team to turn a wheel on track of the new Formula E batman car. IT’s called the DS E-TENSE FE and was on the track at their factory in Versailles. Reminder of the stats: the battery stores twice the energy, the motor is twice as powerful, the car swaps mid race will be a thing of the past at the technology partner moves from Williams to McLaren. The official test at Monteblanco starts today in Southern Spain for all the teams.   GENESIS EV Finally Hyundai said yesterday, in Seoul, that it will unveil a new EV concept for it’s Genesis luxury brand at the Nork York International Auto Show coming soon. They said: “The new concept will be of a GT or gran turismo design and comes ahead of plans by the carmaker to launch a production EV in 2021 that will be able to travel 500 kilometers on a single charge.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Nicole is back and she shares her impressions of driving a Lynk&Co 01 that she and her husband rented in France during their vacation. Robbie will have more to share next week about the BMW i5 and Sam has driven the Land Rover Defender 110 and Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray.In the news, the Ram TRX has been shelved for now, but Ram has a six-cylinder powered version called the RHO. Mercedes-Benz has revealed an all-electric version of the new G-Wagen with four motors. There were several interesting reveals at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show and some of them might make it to North America. The Mini Aceman is all electric, but it doesn't directly replace the discontinued Clubman. The Mazda EZ-6 is a great looking electric sedan that should come to America along with the Buick Electra L and LT. While the design of the Toyota bZ4X is polarizing, the bZ3C and bZ3X are much more appealing.
