Ford is simultaneously restructuring, creating a new "Product Creation and Industrialization" organisation under COO Kumar Galhotra that unifies EV, petrol, and hybrid programmes, with the first vehicle on Ford's new Universal EV architecture — a midsize electric pickup — due next year.DACIA READIES SUB-£16,000 ELECTRIC CITY CARDacia has revealed spy shots of a new electric city car priced from under €18,000 (£15,600), designed in just 16 months with help from its China team, featuring a design closer to its SUV range than the related Renault Twingo. Expected to use a 27.5kWh battery with around 160 miles of range, the car will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026, with Dacia also planning three further EVs before 2030.MERCEDES-BENZ LAUNCHES VLE RANGE FROM €82,260Mercedes-Benz has launched the VLE range starting at €82,260, built on an 800-volt architecture capable of charging at up to 300 kW, enabling 355 km of WLTP range to be added in just 15 minutes. The range spans from the entry-level VLE 250 with an LFP battery to the VLE 400 4MATIC with a 305 kW all-wheel-drive system, with seating configurations from five to eight seats and pricing up to €113,000 depending on specification.KIA EV2 FIRST EDITION JOINS UK ECGThe Kia EV2 First Edition now qualifies for the UK government's £1,500 Electric Car Grant, bringing its net on-the-road price to £26,995. The EV2 had its world premiere in January 2026, entered series production in March at Kia's Slovakia plant, and sits as the entry point to Kia's dedicated BEV line-up designed and built in Europe.FREE ELECTRICITY ON GERMAN V2G TARIFFMunich-based The Mobility House plans to launch a V2G electricity tariff in Germany, initially paired with the Renault 5, that could allow EV owners to drive for free by charging when renewable energy is cheap and selling power back to the grid at peak times. A 2024 French pilot with Renault showed that connecting a car for an average of 14 hours per day can reduce charging costs for 10,000 km of driving to effectively zero, with the Mercedes-Benz CLA and GLC also set to join the programme later in 2026.BYD GAINS GROUND IN GERMANYBYD is surging in Germany, with Carwow recording a 135% jump in purchase queries for the brand in Q1 2026, driven by rising fuel prices linked to the Middle East conflict and increasing new car costs making Chinese EVs more attractive. Interest centred on BYD's electric SUVs and the Dolphin hatchback, with Chinese-owned MG also seeing increased demand on the platform.BYD'S JINAN HEADS FOR GERMANYBYD's car carrier Jinan, one of the world's largest at 9,200-vehicle capacity, departed Shanghai on 17 March carrying fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles bound for Germany, arriving around 33 days later. The shipment highlights BYD's continued reliance on Chinese exports while European local production ramps up, with trial assembly underway in Szeged, Hungary since January and series production targeted for Q2 2026.BYD PRICES SEAL 6 PHEVS IN AUSTRALIABYD Australia has confirmed pricing for the Seal 6 Sedan and Seal 6 Touring PHEVs, with the Sedan Essential starting at A$34,990 (around £18,380) — undercutting the Toyota Camry Hybrid — and first deliveries expected around June 2026. Both models use BYD's DM 5.0 plug-in hybrid system with Blade battery technology, offering 55 km electric range on the Sedan and around 100 km on the Touring Premium.POLESTAR AUSTRALIA BOSS ATTACKS PHEVSPolestar Australia's managing director Scott Maynard has publicly called PHEVs "the worst of both worlds," arguing they combine electric drivetrain complexity with petrol engine weight, rarely get charged by owners, and can actually be less efficient than a pure petrol car due to the added battery mass. He also claimed PHEVs are "fast becoming irrelevant" as EV range improves — a notable stance given that Polestar's parent company Geely continues to sell PHEVs across Volvo, Lotus, and Lynk & Co.TESLA ADDS SUNWODA AS FIFTH BATTERY SUPPLIERTesla has signed Sunwoda Electric Vehicle Battery as its fifth battery supplier, with Sunwoda set to provide third-generation LFP cells capable of charging at up to 3C — cutting charge time to around 20 minutes, compared to Tesla's current 2C LFP packs. The cells are destined for export vehicles built at Giga Shanghai, with Tesla buying raw prismatic cells from Sunwoda and assembling the modules and packs in-house.HONDA DROPS E:NY1 FROM UK LINE-UPHonda has removed the e:Ny1 from its UK configurator, leaving it with no fully electric models on sale in Britain after the car sold just 7,122 units in three years, hampered by a high price and limited range requiring heavy dealer discounts. This creates a serious ZEV mandate problem for Honda, which must hit 22% BEV sales this year rising to 80% by 2030, with fines of up to £15,000 per non-compliant vehicle — relief is expected from mid-2026 when a retro-inspired compact EV on the new Super-N platform arrives priced under £20,000.

Renault is exploring range-extender EV (EREV) technology for its next-generation electric platform — underpinning models like the Scenic successor — where a combustion engine acts only as a generator for trips up to 1,000km, and Provost is pushing for EREVs to be explicitly permitted for sale in the EU and UK beyond the 2035 all-BEV mandate.NORWAY'S EV SHARE RECOVERS AND HITS 98%Norway registered 7,272 new passenger cars in February 2026, with BEVs accounting for 7,127 of them — a 98.01% market share — as the market began to stabilise after a turbulent end to 2025 driven by expiring VAT exemptions. OFV Director Geir Inge Stokke compared the post-surge normalisation to the period following the 2022 VAT reform, with diesel, petrol PHEVs, hybrids, and pure petrol cars dividing up the remaining 2% between them. NORWAY PASSES ONE MILLION BATTERY-ELECTRIC VEHICLESNorway's battery-electric passenger car fleet has crossed one million, with 951,300 BEV passenger cars and 50,300 BEV light commercial vehicles (LCVs) on the road, representing 32.4% of all passenger cars in the country's 2.94 million-strong fleet. Oslo leads with a 48.9% BEV share in its passenger car fleet and is expected to crack 50% before summer, while rural Finnmark trails at 12.2%, and the Norwegian EV Association's Christina Bu says the LCV transition — currently at just 9.7% — urgently needs to accelerate.UPTAKE SPREADS BEYOND WEALTHIER EARLY ADOPTERSResearch from charging firm char.gy and think tank New Automotive shows that EV adoption in England, once closely tied to wealth as measured by the Index of Multiple Deprivation, has spread significantly into poorer areas by Q3 2024–2025, with growth rates converging across most neighbourhoods. Used BEV transactions surged 45.7% in 2025 to a record 274,815 units, lifting used BEV market share to 3.5%, and with more than two million plug-in vehicles now on UK roads, the main remaining challenge is delivering reliable, affordable on-street charging in the most disadvantaged communities. QUANTUMSCAPE UNVEILS PRODUCTION LINE IN CALIFORNIAQuantumScape officially inaugurated its Eagle Line — a highly automated solid-state battery pilot production facility in San Jose, California — on February 4, 2026, designed not for mass production by QuantumScape itself but as a scalable blueprint that licensing partners, including Volkswagen (which has invested over $300 million), can replicate at gigawatt-hour scale in their own plants. With roughly $850 million in liquidity but a history of burning over $100 million annually and Volkswagen having scaled back its involvement in 2023 after missed timelines, QuantumScape's strategy pivot toward licensing means the next 18–24 months are critical for securing a major customer agreement.KIA UK SETS EV2 FIRST DRIVE WEEKENDSKia UK will run First Drive Weekend events for the EV2 across nearly all 190 UK dealers from April 16 to June 27, 2026, offering structured 30-minute accompanied drives ahead of first deliveries expected later in the year. The EV2 is a compact SUV just over four metres long built on the 400V E-GMP platform, supporting 10%–80% DC rapid charging in around 30 minutes, with two battery options (42.2kWh and 61.0kWh) and an expected starting price of around £25,000 — potentially undercutting rivals like the Renault 5 and Ford Puma Gen-E after the UK's £3,750 plug-in vehicle grant.BMW TEASES FOUR-MOTOR ELECTRIC M3 AT NÜRBURGRINGBMW M has released camouflaged footage of the electric M3 prototype — codenamed ZA0 — lapping the Nürburgring, featuring a unique four-motor all-wheel-drive setup with a front-motor decoupling mode for rear-wheel-drive capability that doesn't appear on any other Neue Klasse model. The ZA0 uses a bespoke battery pack with more than 100 kWh of net energy capacity not shared with regular i3 variants, with production targeted for March 2027 — well after the standard i3 sedan, which entered pre-series production at BMW's Munich plant in February 2026.ROYAL ENFIELD SETS 2026–2027 EV AND ICE PUSHRoyal Enfield is launching its first electric motorcycles under a new sub-brand called Flying Flea, starting with the minimalist urban C6 in 2026 and followed by the scrambler-inspired S6 in 2027, both sharing a common battery architecture that signals a modular platform approach. The brand is also developing an electrified Himalayan adventure bike, pushing its EV ambitions beyond city commuting into a segment that demands tougher performance credentials around weight, range, and durability. NEXT POLESTAR WILL BE SPORTIER AND ON CHINESE PLATFORMPolestar will replace the Polestar 2 in 2027 with a lower, sportier saloon that will be meaningfully longer than today's 4.6-metre car — potentially rivalling the BMW 3 Series — with UK pricing expected to start just below £50,000. The new model shifts to a Geely Holdings group-wide platform shared with Volvo, Lotus, Lynk&Co, and Zeekr, developed at "China speed" in a 30-month cycle versus the typical five-to-seven-year European timeline, with software-defined vehicle capability and advanced central computing at its core.ITALY LAUNCHES FIRST OFFICIAL ELECTRIC PORSCHE CLUBRegistro Italiano E-motion has become the world's first Porsche club built exclusively around battery-electric vehicles, earning official recognition from Porsche after beginning life as a pandemic-era chat group for Italian Taycan owners in 2021. The club's inaugural tour brought together 131 participants and 73 vehicles — a mix of 42 Taycans and 31 Macan Electrics, including two Taycan Turbo GT Weissach models — on a multi-day Alpine drive from Porsche Experience Center Franciacorta in northern Italy to the Hans Peter Porsche Traumwerk museum near Salzburg, Austria.

On today's Turn Down For Watt Podcast, we dive into the controversy surrounding the Donut Labs battery and ask the big question everyone is debating: Is it truly solid-state, or is it overhyped marketing bordering on a scam? We break down what solid-state really means, how it compares to current lithium-ion tech from CATL, BYD, and Tesla, and why battery terminology matters more than ever.We also unpack Ford's announcement that autonomy will arrive with its affordable universal EV platform in 2027, while examining the very real struggles Ford and the broader industry have faced with EV profitability. GM isn't alone in this pain, reporting a $1.7 billion EV loss last quarter and announcing another $6 billion write-off, while Jeep quietly canceled two plug-in models. At CES, one of the most under-the-radar stories came from Geely, the parent company of Zeekr, Volvo, Polestar, and Lynk & Co. With models like the Zeekr Z, 001, and 7X, plus their “Golden Brick” ultra-fast charging battery, we explore what it would mean if Zeekr begins U.S. production in South Carolina within 24–36 months—and how far behind U.S. automakers may be if current pullbacks continue.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rebel architect Frank Gehry believed architecture IS art. He strived to evoke emotion in every design. Last Friday, Gehry died at 96 but he never stopped creating. In 2017, IDEAS producer Mary Lynk had a rare opportunity to spend two days with Gehry at his LA studio. Their wide-ranging conversation covers many aspects of his life and career, including a moment at 40 when the sight of an ancient piece of art from 500 BC led him to weep. "I think if you went and looked at it, you would cry too," he told Lynk.*This conversation is a two-part series that delves into Frank Gehry's infusion of humanity into his designs.

Vamos a responder a dos preguntas aparentemente sencillas: ¿Qué significa hoy en día "Made in Europe"? ¿Qué significa "Made in China"?
In SSPI's new Accelerate Change podcast series, sponsored by SES, we explore how creative collaboration is transforming the pace of innovation across the space and satellite industry. SES is championing a new era - one where partnerships, agile technologies, and bold ideas are breaking old cycles and building a more connected future. Through conversations with leaders in cloud, telecommunications, sustainability, and space infrastructure, we dive into the stories shaping the next frontier of global connectivity. What if your phone could connect to space? Not with a bulky terminal, but with the device already in your hand, wherever you are, no matter the infrastructure on the ground? In this first episode of the series, we hear from Amy Mehlman, Executive Vice President and Chief Global Affairs Officer at Lynk Global. Amy has shaped telecom and space policy for nearly thirty years - from Congress to the FCC, from multinationals to NewSpace startups. Today, she's helping guide a company that's redefining who can connect and how, through a new model of global access. In this episode, Amy and SSPI's Tamara Bond-Williams explore how unmodified mobile phones can connect directly to satellites: no towers or special hardware needed. Amy Mehlman is EVP and Chief Global Affairs officer at Lynk Global. She is a senior telecommunication professional with nearly three decades hands-on experience helping innovative companies secure favorable public policies, government contracts and secure market access by working with government representatives, industry partners, and multilateral NGOs. Most recently, Mehlman worked as VP for Global Affairs and Stakeholder Relations at E-Space Inc. where she led global policy efforts shaping the rapidly growing non-geostationary satellite market, successfully-pursued government contracts, obtained market access, spearheaded partnerships, and oversaw legislative efforts. Prior to that Amy served as VP of U.S. Government Affairs and Global Policy at Viasat, leading their domestic and international policy efforts on satellite licensing, space safety and equitable access to spectrum. Earlier in her career, Amy was Founder and President of a successful boutique telecommunications public policy firm (Mehlman Capitol Strategies) representing over 30 companies before the U.S. Congress, FCC & Executive Branch. Amy began her career at the prestigious Washington, D.C. law firm Wiley, Rein & Fielding where she represented leading wireless, satellite, telecom equipment and broadcast companies before the US Congress and Administration.

“We work in a very customized way on these opportunities to, our trainers will meet with our service provider, understand the end customer, and then there will be a meeting with the end customer stakeholders and our service provider customer to really come up with a customized training agenda that meets the needs of their business,” says Katie Merrill Founder and CEO of B-Lynk. In this podcast, we learn how training is very critical to the entire SaaS industry. The success of many technologies depends on the non-technology workers being able to comfortably use what's in front of them. B-Lynk offers several approaches to the learning and training challenge: videos, guides, digital books, and content that fits with local language needs. Customization “A real bread and butter of our offer has been, end customer end user training,” Katie adds. Different customers need different things. “We work in a very customized way on those opportunities. Our trainers will meet with our service provider, understand the end customer, and then there will be a meeting with the end customer stakeholders and our service provider customer to really come up with a customized training agenda that meets the needs of their business. They know exactly what their agents are going to learn, exactly what their supervisors are going to learn. And then we deliver that training as a service. And if needed and necessary, we can create video content to follow along for future training beyond that initial onboarding.” Migration as an Opportunity “I look at migration as really for service providers as an incredible opportunity to reconnect with their customers during this migration process,” says Katie. We learn how partnering with B-Lynk can open new opportunities. Katie also reminds us that “a bad migration is a bad migration.” Not thinking through the training portion can lead to a failed migration and to churn. A service provider can end up on either end of a spectrum of great to terrible experiences. Visit https://b-lynk.com/

Today, on Speaking Out of Place, we discuss the recent International Court of Justice ruling on the Gaza genocide case, which found that Israel is plausibly engaging in genocide in Gaza.We discuss the case and its implications, as well as the colonial backdrop of the international law behind it, with former UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine Michael Link, Palestinian human rights attorney, scholar, activist, and teacher Noura Erakat, and Burmese scholar and dissident in exile, Maung Zarni. We also address the recent decision of a number of countries to defund the UN Relief Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, which was established by the United Nations in 1949. Finally, we talk about what global civil society can and must do to effect change where international law cannot.Noura Erakat is a human rights attorney and an Associate Professor at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. She is a Co-Editor of Jadaliyya. Her book, Justice for Some: Law and the Question of Palestine (Stanford University Press, 2019) narrates the Palestinian struggle for freedom as told through the relationship between international law and politics during five critical junctures between 1917-2017 to better understand the emancipatory potential of law and to consider possible horizons for the future. Erakat's research interests include human rights law, humanitarian law, refugee law, national security law, social justice, critical race theory, and the Palestinian-Israel conflict. Until his retirement in December 2022, Michael Lynk taught labor law, constitutional law and international and Canadian human rights law at the Faculty of Law, Western University in London, Ontario for more than 20 years. From 2016 to 2022, he served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur for the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967.
