My guest is HUGE in Korea! He's also fast-becoming famous here in the US.Dr. Chris Yandle can thank his 8th-grade daughter, Addison, for worldwide fame and adulation. If not for her letting Dad know how much she enjoyed #DadLunchNotes, he might've stopped writing them.As it were, the day Chris didn't slip a note into Addison's lunch, she asked what was up. That let Chris know she was not only reading his notes but enjoying them.Following appearances on The Today Show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and more recently, People magazine, Chris' book, Lucky Enough, is starting to sell like kimchi in Korea. It's an incredible story.Let's go back to August 2017. Chris was bummed about a job loss and thought writing an encouraging note to Addison might elevate his own mood (as well as encourage his daughter).Regular listeners know I've long been a fan of handwritten personal-notes. Together with my recently becoming a #GirlDad, it's no wonder I bought Lucky Enough as soon I heard of it.The book reminds me of How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie (read my review and other book recommendations here), which ironically has been the most-recommended book on the podcast. Both books—Lucky Enough & "How to Win Friends"—make you want to serve others. On this episode, we discuss high rates of anxiety & depression among teen girls. The numbers are staggering. After 2013, the percentage of adolescent girls suffering from mental health disorders jumped 250% (source: The Coddling of the American Mind by Jonathan Haidt). With this in mind, Chris & I discuss how parents can navigate today's hyper-connected online environment.Chris is a native of South Louisiana. In a past-life, he was a college athletics administrator at "The U" (University of Miami), Georgia Tech & Baylor. I ask him how common it was to see high-profile alumni on campus. Guys like Jimmy Graham, Michael Vilma, Michael Irvin, Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testaverde, Edgerin James. And whether having them hanging around the facilities helped with recruiting. We also talk about NCAA's new "name, image, and likeness" (NIL) policy. Chris believes one of the reasons he was pushed out of college athletics is because he didn't like how student-athletes were treated. After all, coaches were making millions of dollars, while young men and women got nothing. But now, thanks to the new NIL rule, every NCAA athlete is given the opportunity to profit off their name, image, and likeness.Chris is a strong advocate for higher education. He said he's always believed: you'll get somewhere in life based on your education. In fact, he recalls a pivotal moment in high school when his teacher said to him, "You'll never amount to anything in life until jackasses learn how to fly."His teacher's words left a mark. But by taking those words personally, they also inspired him. He found himself newly-motivated to get better grades. He earned a PhD.Now 39 years old, Chris recently moved his family home to Louisiana. He said he's enjoying re-connecting with his daughter. This conversation was the highlight of my week. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Remember ESPN the Magazine? NEXT athlete, the Body Issue – for me, the Mag was appointment reading. Maybe I'm a little different, but I grew up addicted to the sports magazine scene. Sports Illustrated, Sport, The Sporting News. Every year my grandmother would get me a subscription to these mags for Christmas, she didn't have to think about it, just renew the subscription each year and I'd be happy as could be. SI covers adorned my walls. In my mind's eye I can still picture the SI cover with Bernie Kosar in his Browns jersey and mini fro, with the headline “Banking on Bernie”. I see it clearly because it was the cover that grabbed your eye as you walked into my bedroom. I didn't particularly like the Browns or Bernie, it just so happened to be in your line of sight, and I remember it vividly. Growing up, these mags were all I read. Cover-to-cover. My mom tried to get me to read more novels, more classics, but I loved the storytelling that came through on those pages. Frank Deford, Leigh Montville, Alexander Wolff. ESPN the Magazine raised the bar. The pictures were better, content was faster paced, the branding, the stats, the data visualizations and the storytelling were just awe inspiring. I worked at a competing sports network and yet read ESPN the Magazine for inspiration. NEXT athlete, the Body Issue, Athlete X, The Biz, Two Way – it was amazing. But magazines, well, they died, and it wasn't climate change that killed them, it was audience change. TL;DR became a thing. Everything we needed was on our phones. Information was right here all the time. September 2019 ESPN published their last magazine. They said the demise was caused by the “rapid evolution of consumer habits” which means, people were no longer buying paper publications. Get this in December of 2018, just 9 months before shuttering, The Association of Magazine Media, ranked ESPN The Magazine No. 1 in total audience. It ranked No. 1 among magazines in web and mobile web audiences and was top ranked in video. And that wasn't enough. It still didn't work. Remember magazines, those were great. Today's guest Gary Belsky worked at ESPN the Magazine for almost 14 years, culminating in being Editor in Chief 2007-2011, in fact the Body Issue was one of his brain children. He's written 8 books, is an accomplished speaker and is the Chief Content Officer for Elland Road Partners. As former guest Joan Lynch told me, Gary Belsky is one of the smartest people I've ever had the pleasure of speaking with. After my conversation with Gary which, you are about to hear, I concur. Listen to Gary Belsky on the latest Work In Sports podcast...

A strange time is upon us as a worldwide pandemic puts the entire nation on pause. Things look grim as trade, sports, and social gatherings come to a halt. The courage of man hangs by a thread. However, not all is lost as Andrew Berry continues to make offseason moves in these dark times. The Cleveland Browns will not stop their quest for eternal glory. Our heroes (Rawley and Kevin) have taken it upon themselves to launch the SECOND SEASON of the Dawgs of War Podcast. While Kevin is wound up because he lives by himself in total isolation, the boys find things to be positive about. The light of the Muni Lot Payphone will guide us all to better times. "Fear not, my brothers and sisters of the Dawg Pound... for it is always darkest before dawn" - Bernie Kosar (probably)
Let me be the first to say I thought the new NBA All-Star Game format, the way it would be played to be precise, was a disaster waiting to happen. Uh yeah, about that... on the contrary, the way it played out was actually ingenious and creative to say the least, but of course the rest of the weekend didn't fare as well with drama coming from the Dunk Contest. Wade should be ashamed of himself, and Aaron Gordon should boycott for the remainder of his career. Did he get robbed again? According to the 'court of public opinion'... absolutely! With all the chaos surrounding MLB and the Houston Astros, what, if anything, should happen now that it seems once again, Arnold Rothstein has made his presence felt; should their title be vacated? Do their actions warrant the 'Death Penalty' like SMU's "Pony Express?? And for the forever optimistic Browns fan, a message from Bernie Kosar that could very well sum up why the Browns have been dysfunctional and abysmal for 20 years and counting!!!
