They're talking about that nostalgic time when these BFF's met, from Gwen's "Talbots Kids" patterned turtlenecks to her patiently watching as Vanessa would act out commercials in her vanity mirror. And, hear Gwen's take on being in the female-focused gym class "Body Fitness" with Jonah, a class that Jonah is still mad he had to take. Finally, in the impressive new game "CONGRATULATIONS, YOU PLAYED EACH OTHER" Vanessa finds out how much her brother and her best friend know each other, from bands Jonah was in to modeling jobs Gwen did and more, AND Vanessa gets to talk about herself a lot in the process. Today Heather digs in to how our experiences in gym class may be impacting our body image issue today. Did you get picked last for the teams? Did you hate getting hit by the dodge ball or wearing gym uniforms or changing with the other girls? Did a teacher weigh you and then call out the number for the whole class to hear? Many who wrestle with body image issues are still struggling with trauma of what we were told or believed was true about us in gym class! Today Heather reminisces through the various angles of this issue and offers encouragement for anyone still suffering with gym class trauma. Have you read the 40 Day Body Image Workbook Yet? If not, what are you waiting for? Start on your journey to body image freedom and healing from gym class trauma (or other body image issue instigators) today! Being present on social media can be like showing up to a 5:30 AM fitness class. We show up for that first class excited, but then things happen that lead to us giving up on the commitment we made to be consistent in the first place We lose motivation and consistency online when we hit even the smallest bump in the road. I've had so many 5:30 am gym partners that didn't take their commitments seriously and left me alone in the classes. In what ways can we apply this to social media? When we don't see immediate results, we give up. The key to maintaining energy and consistency in your social media commitments is to show up. By showing up when you don't feel like it, you can make a difference. Take care of your social media as you would your health. Show up for yourself!Check out all the CONTENT CREATION + SOCIAL MEDIA resources I have at THEGLITTER.MEConnect with Sam on Instagram or TikTokCheck out all the CONTENT CREATION + SOCIAL MEDIA resources I have at THEGLITTER.ME
In a special crossover episode, we rope Dan McCoy of The Flop House, his brother John McCoy of Sophomore Lit and their brother Rob McCoy for questions about the sort of things you would read in high school. We start off by finding out what the kids are getting at the Scholastic Book Fair, then blink in amazement at sequels to classic books that probably shouldn't have them. It all leads to the lightning round, where our players go outside their comfort zones and finally establish trivia dominance over their brothers! Nope, it's not an urban legend! Today we are talking to journalist and filmmaker Robin Washington who, like a huge number of boys in high school between the 1920s and 1970s, was required to swim naked during gym class. Not only has Robin created documentaries like the PBS film You Don't Have to Ride Jim Crow!, he is also a founder of the Alliance of Black Jews. But Robin is here to talk to us specifically about the trauma that was his 1970s high school swim class and a shocking experience once shared by millions of boys but long forgotten by the rest of America. For school children around the world, gym class is a grueling, years-long rite of passage, and when we were growing up, it was especially arduous. Climbing ropes. Getting picked last. The dreaded Presidential Challenge. Square dancing?! Let's be honest: Gym was (and still is) complete nonsense -- a distraction from learning the fundamentals -- but it's a collective memory for most of us, and it's the perfect topic for KnockBack. So nock your arrow, pull yourself up, go watch film, and then join us for an extensive discussion about a piece of perpetual Americana: Physical education. Or the lack thereof.
