Text us your thoughts on the episode or the show! The landscape of video production has undergone a seismic shift over the past decade. What was once a straightforward process of creating a single, polished piece of content has evolved into a complex ecosystem where every production must function across multiple platforms while maintaining its emotional impact. In our conversation with Christian Schu and David Siciliano, two veteran video producers working with major brands across continents, we explore how the fundamentals of video marketing have transformed. Christian, who creates content for high-end audio brands like Focal, Naim, and Bang & Olufsen, and David, who manages production for everything from performance marketing to major brand campaigns, share their perspectives on what makes modern video content effective. The most surprising revelation? Today's successful video producers think of themselves primarily as marketers rather than filmmakers. Both guests describe at length how understanding marketing strategy, target audiences, and desired outcomes has become essential to their work. As David puts it, "Your marketing budget is your video budget" – highlighting how completely these disciplines have merged. Christian adds that while technical aspects matter, ultimately "the product doesn't matter – it must be good, but anything besides that is only emotion."Whether you're a marketing professional collaborating with video teams or simply curious about how modern video content comes together, this episode offers valuable insights into the evolving relationship between storytelling, marketing strategy, and technical production. Siciliano also addressed the challenge of identifying fake IDs, noting that many employees may not be trained to spot subtle differences, which can lead to security breaches.

Longtime friend of the show Andrew Siciliano makes his third appearance on the podcast (Episodes 182 & 192). He has been hosting the Olympic Gold Zone, a livestream broadcast on Peacock as a supplement to the main NBC Olympic coverage. Every day during the 2024 Paris Summer Games, Gold Zone airs from 7 am to 5 pm (EDT) and sends viewers from all the different sports, much like the NFL does with its Red Zone coverage. Ironically, Siciliano and current Red Zone host Scott Hanson are a main part of the Gold Zone coverage. At times, Siciliano and Hanson are on-screen together after having separate Red Zone channels for over a decade. In this episode, Siciliano compares hosting the Olympics to his NFL coverage. He addresses any potential “rivalry” with Hanson (who came on the podcast Episode 382). He also gives insight as to his broadcasting future.

Carl Siciliano is the Founder of the Ali Forney Center, which he built up to become the nation's largest organization providing housing to LGBTQ youth. He is also the author of Making Room: Three Decades of Fighting for Beds, Belonging, and a Safe Place for LGBTQ Youth. In his youth, Carl spent several years living with and serving unhoused people as part of the radical Catholic Worker Movement and spent eight months living in Benedictine monasteries. My brief backstory with Carl is that I worked for the Ali Forney Center for the bulk of my time living in NYC where I served as their director of special events and got to see the org grow very quickly. I love the Ali Forney Center and all the folks connected to it- especially the people it serves, and reading Carl's new book gave me a deeper perspective about the importance of this work. We start by talking about Ali Forney, a homeless queer youth who is the namesake and inspiration behind the Ali Forney Center, and we talk about what was so profoundly impactful about that relationship for Carl. Carl speaks of his admiration of Ali's and their ability to own a relationship with God, describing this as the conscious divinity of Ali. We look at what it was like to bring awareness of the plight of homeless LGBTQ youth by initiating rallies and other forms of activism, and this was a transformational moment of the consciousness of the LGBTQ community (and beyond) in New York. Next, we dicuss the spiritual significance of supporting our most disenfranchised community members. And then we look at how Carl has contended with the hypocrisy of some religious leaders essentially doing the opposite of God's work by creating more division rather than unity. In addition to looking at the shadow side of religions, Carl also makes a passionate case for what queer Catholicism can look like and how it can be experienced (leaving me wanting to attend mass..!). All these and many more topics in this very personal and inspiring interview. Dennis is joined by author Carl Siciliano for Part 2 of their conversation about Carl's new book Marking Room and his decades-long career, fighting to protect the lives of LGBTQ youth in New York City. Carl talks about the most difficult part of writing the book; reliving the murder of his young friend Ali Forney. He also talks about the big themes he wrestles with in Making Room, specifically humans seeming need to humiliate each other and Americans need to believe that they're always the good guys. Carl also talks about lighter subjects, like the Thanksgiving weekend in 2016 when both Madonna and Lady Gaga wanted to make top secret visits to the Ali Forney Center. Other topics include: how his looks effected his work, seeing his own family background in the stories of young people who'd been kicked out of their homes, the human cost of the gentrification of Times Square, why the monks cried when he left the monastery he spent time in as a young man.
Dennis is joined via Zoom by author Carl Siciliano to discuss his new book Making Room: Three Decades of Fighting for Beds, Belonging and a Safe Space for LGBT Youth, which documents his founding of the Ali Forney Center in New York City in 2002 as well his many years at the Times Square youth center Safe Space before that. It was at Safe Space in 1994 that Carl met Ali Forney, a non-binary black young person who had been living on the street since they were 12. The pair developed a unique bond and when Ali was senselessly murdered by a gun shot to the temple, one of the ways Carl dealt with his grief is to start a new youth center specifically for queer youth and to name it after Ali. Carl talks about the capacity for love and unshakeable faith in God that made Ali so unique and recalls how he used Ali's memorial to get more media attention to the plight of the citiy's homeless queer youth. Other topics include: the day Tyra Banks showed up to walk the runway with Ali, dealing with unsympathetic and bullying politicians like Mayor Bloomberg and Mayor Cuomo, a moment of grace he experienced on a train back from Coney Island with several of his kids, how he ended up with a parrot that says "Sit your butt down" and his complicated journey with Catholicism. He also shares a story about Bea Arthur from The Golden Girls that's guaranteed to make you love her more than you already do. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/720043/making-room-by-carl-siciliano/

Today we talk to two powerful LGBTQ activists,, advocates, and writers. We have Joe Jarvis, one of the most popular and award-winning LGBTQ bloggers on the planet with the outspoken Joe.My.God blog and website. Joe spoke about his 19th year "in business" last April: "We're at 138,342 posts over 19 years, the last 15 of which have been without a full day off, although posting on weekends is usually at a slower rate. As I've said on this day every year, whether I am insanely committed or am insane and should be committed – that is entirely your call.” Today Jow, and we, are celebrating our other guest Carl Siciliano, and Carl's new upcoming book Making Room. Named a White House Champion of Change by Barak Obama, Carl is a nationally recognized advocate and provider for homeless LGBT youth. He has been dedicated to this population since 1994. His career began by helping manage shelters, soup kitchens, and residential programs for homeless individuals in New York, Washington, D.C., and Connecticut1. In 2002, Carl founded the Ali Forney Center (AFC) in memory of Ali Forney, a homeless gender-nonconforming youth who was killed on the streets of Harlem in New York City. The AFC has grown to become the largest agency dedicated to LGBTQ+ homeless youths in the country, assisting over 2,000 youths per year through a 24-hour Drop-In Center, medical and mental health services, and a scattered-site housing program. In Making Room, Carl tells the story of Ali Forney, a black nonbinary teen who was an inspiration to Carl before Ali was brutally murdered. The murder drove Carl to create a home where unhoused teens could live and feel loved. The book is Carl's story of mending hearts broken by displacement and rejection, including his own.

0:00 -- Intro.1:27 -- About this podcast's sponsor: The American College of Governance Counsel.2:23 -- Intro of Webinar (and speakers) by Nancy Easterbrook, Executive Director of SVDX.5:33 -- Start of webinar by Dan Siciliano, Chair of SVDX.6:40 -- Some differences between private (VC-backed) and public boards.9:23 -- The role of independent directors in venture-backed companies. 14:00 -- Specific issues in VC industry: preferred vs common shares and impact on director fiduciary duties and dual-fiduciary duties. The Trados case (2013).18:14 -- An edge-case proposed by Heidi Roizen: voting as a director vs voting as a shareholder. The "sanctity of the preference stack" vs management carve-out.23:44 -- How "bad" directors can negatively impact companies and the proper use of special independent committees to "cleanse transactions." The role company counsel. Funding managing incentive plans (MIPs).29:39 -- Two lessons for independent directors from Heidi Roizen: 1) "avoid messing with waterfall distributions" and 2) run a thorough process.33:52 -- Important take-away from the Trados case: fiduciary duties are owed to the common stockholders.40:00 -- The Basho case (2018), where a VC investor was ordered to pay ~$20m in damages for using contractual consent rights granted to it as a preferred shareholder together with “hardball” negotiating tactics to force the company to the brink of insolvency and leave it with no choice but to accept “oppressive” financing terms. Inside rounds vs outside rounds.42:27 -- Other thoughts to encourage independent directors in venture-backed companies from Heidi Roizen. "You have to understand the payouts." "As a VC: lead, follow or get out of the way." "We can either be the crusher, or the crushee, but either way something is going to get crashed here." "Sometimes (...) the best thing you can do is say, look, I'll get out of the way.You guys do what you want. We're in the risk business (...) almost half of our deals don't return the capital we put in. And so to be assholes about stuff is a bad idea. You may win the battle, but lose the war, right? You may, you know, twist somebody's arm and get your couple million back, but no entrepreneur is going to want to work with you anymore."49:09 -- On director education for venture-backed companies. New program to launch from UC Law SF and Cooley in San Francisco in March 2024! *For more details: contact Evan Epstein at epsteinevan@uclawsf.edu.51:03 -- Why there are so few independent directors in venture-backed companies? Heidi Roizen: "I think they're undervalued by both investors and entrepreneurs." On board education: Heidi recommends Brad Feld's books, including Venture Deals and Startup Boards. Book mentioned by Evan: Founder vs Investor (by Zalman and Neumann).56:03 -- Heidi's recommendation for independent directors of companies running out of cash: "If the company you're on the board of has only a year or less of runway, you already should be speaking up. If your company has nine months or less of runway, you should already be beginning a process to be sold. And if your company has four months or less of runway, I would resign from that board as an independent. I would speak early, speak often, and if nobody's paying attention to you, I would actually get off that board." "[A]ll the problems happen when you have bad process and when you run out of money."59:06 -- The enhanced role of the board in this downmarket. Heidi: "Structured deals are board for startups."__ You can follow Evan on social media at:Twitter: @evanepsteinLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/epsteinevan/ Substack: https://evanepstein.substack.com/__ You can follow Heidi on social media at:Twitter: @HeidiRoizenLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/heidiroizen/ The Startup Solution: https://threshold.vc/podcastThreshold VC: https://threshold.vc/__ You can follow SVDX on social media at:Twitter: @svdx1LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/silicon-valley-directors'-exchange/Website: https://www.svdx.org/__You can join as a Patron of the Boardroom Governance Podcast at:Patreon: patreon.com/BoardroomGovernancePod__This podcast is sponsored by the American College of Governance Counsel.__Music/Soundtrack (found via Free Music Archive): Seeing The Future by Dexter Britain is licensed under a Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License
