Today we have a fascinating guest who blends investigative reporting with deeply human storytelling. My guest is Amy Gamerman, a longtime contributor to The Wall Street Journal's Mansion section. Now, she has authored her first book, The Crazies: The Cattleman, the Wind Prospector, and a War Out West. Just released from Simon & Schuster.Amy's Website @amy_gamerman on Instagram Here's a guide to Mark's interview:Your new book, The Crazies, has been described as an evocative story set against the backdrop of Montana's Big Timber and delves into the collision of tradition, innovation, and identity. Yellowstone meets Amity & Prosperity. It's a compelling exploration of power, community, and environmental stakes in the American West. Before we dive into the details of your book, let's start by exploring your creative journey and process."1: "You've had a distinguished career in journalism, from drama critic to real estate writer for the Wall Street Journal. What inspired you to transition into writing a full-length narrative nonfiction book, and why was this story the one you chose to tell?"2: "The book features a rich tapestry of characters: from a Crow activist to a Texas oil tycoon to an Olympic athlete-turned-attorney. How did you go about finding and building these voices into a cohesive and dynamic narrative?"3: "Themes of tradition, innovation, and conflict permeate The Crazies. What did you discover about the delicate balance between preserving a way of life and embracing necessary change?"4: "Your writing style is both journalistic and lyrical, with a deep sense of place. How do you approach the challenge of immersing readers in such a ruggedly beautiful yet complicated setting like Big Timber, Montana?"5: "The book has been praised for its relevance in the broader conversation about climate change and community. What do you hope readers take away from this story, not only about Montana but also about the challenges we face as a global community?"Thanks, as always, to our sponsor, White Cloud Coffee Roasters. West Virginians take a lot of pride in their state. As well they should—it's one of the most stunningly gorgeous destinations in the United States, albeit one that can be hard to get to, thanks to the same mountainous spectacle that draws people there in the first place. Matt Kwasniewski is a West Virginia native, as well as the owner and head brewer of Big Timber Brewing in Elkins, West Virginia. It's the largest craft brewery in the state, with an annual output of around 6,000 barrels last year, positioning them solidly in the “microbrewery” category. He says that West Virginia's rural location, small population, and generally blue collar workforce makes it an unlikely place for craft beer to thrive. But the state is much more than how it's defined by outsiders. Kwasniewski has seen the craft beer industry grow from 10 to around 32 breweries in the past 10 years, and for residents, that's a lot. In this episode, Kwasniewski walks us through the state of West Virginia, both as a local and as a brewer, and what he wishes more people knew about the relatively undiscovered Mountain State. For instance, they have some of the purest water anywhere in the country—ideal for brewing Big Timber beers like lagers, IPAs, and their award-winning porter that took gold at the 2024 World Beer Cup. He's not interested in expanding much further than his home state, and why should he? He wants to be the beer of West Virginia, and you can hear him explain why and how he plans to do that.

I don't have to tell anyone reading this that here in the west, wildfires are a fact of life. I'm also sure that most folks are already aware that the climate crisis, combined with more and more homes being built in and around forest lands is creating an escalating cycle of devastation in fire prone communities. There is a tremendous amount of pressure on politicians and agencies to act, or at least to be seen to be acting, but right now, too many people, including many key decision makers, are looking at the problem backwards. To talk about the real solutions to protecting communities from wildfires, as well as an exciting piece of legislation making its way through Salem, I'm joined by Ralph Bloemers. Ralph is the Director of Fire Safe Communities for the Green Oregon Alliance, producer of the award winning wildfire documentary Elemental, and has worked on forest conservation issues for decades. He is a wealth of information on wildfires, the right and wrong way to protect communities and homes, and current legislative efforts to address these issues. Roger talks with Marci about that weather! As the spring weather slowly works it's way in we will be getting back to transmitter sites to finish up the satellite transition. On the heels of that are repairs at KXEI and KALS with tower work, and then the new transmitters need to be installed at KALS and KMCJ. In the mix will be the new stations with KGLE-FM in Glendive and KXEB in Big Timber. Roger will give an update on our YNOP Ambassador Bible projects, then wrap up with a great testimony from Kenya.
On the network update, Roger and Dave will chat about the special day we have coming up called our Day of Hope, always the Monday that starts off our fundraisers. We have a special outreach to the country of Turkey. We will work with people on the ground who are bringing much needed supplies and filling a spiritual need for the love of Jesus. It will be a big year with new stations and new technology. We will build KGLE-FM and Big Timber and work on getting over 20 more affiliates set and ready with our Africa satellite networks, which adds our 19th country! Other technology includes a podcast page for stations to get Christian programming, and developing apps for our work in Africa. YNOP has a lot of projects the Lord has given us to keep moving forward! How can you play a part? Go to www.ynop.org.

The Edaphosaurus means “pavement lizard.” This large animal is one of the earliest known four-legged land-living vertebrate herbivores, weighing over 600 pounds and measuring up to 11 feet long. Archeologists have uncovered their fossils in West Virginia. A common and popular fossil hunting spot in the state is the Lost River. This is a roadside quarry near Wardensville. Today's Network Update covers many prayer needs! First, Harlowton construction is scheduled to start THIS week! We also have updates on KGLE-FM and the new station at Big Timber, Montana...as well as news on our satellite transition project. We also hear some news about our New Life Africa Satellite Network as well as our upcoming Sharathon! All of this is being done with one purpose…getting the Word Of God into people's hearts as effectively as we can. Listen, pray, and share!
Today's Network Update is absolutely filled with good reports, as well as things to keep praying about! On top of the list - we can begin the satellite transition this week as our receivers were finally delivered Friday! We also have great progress reports on Harlowton and need prayer for the continuing work there as well as in Big Timber. This is all about telling people about our Jesus…every year since 1996 YNOP has not only maintained its daily operations but also been in “building mode.” As God gives opportunities we want to faithfully go forward with them…thanks to everyone who is making it possible! Listen, pray, and share!

In the final episode of the inaugural season of BYOB: The Healthcare Podcast, the team sits down to speak with Brian Washburn, Executive Director of Operations at Humboldt General Hospital. Brian speaks to the crew about his early career pathways and how advanced certifications help leverage young leaders for the next phase of their career. Brian specifically speaks to MGMA's Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) credential. The CMPE credential is recognized as the professional standard in medical practice management. Brian Washburn – Executive Director of Operations at Humboldt General Hospital Brian Washburn is the Executive Director of Operations at Humboldt General Hospital, a critical access hospital located in Winnemucca, Nevada. He graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Accounting, then went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating from Pitt, he secured a business associate fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in the department of Management Engineering and Internal Consulting. After a few years he moved to Montana where he worked with the Billings Clinic in a small hospital as Director of Operations before moving to Nevada. The crew asked Brian the following questions: What encouraged you to pursue healthcare administration? You currently serve as the Executive Director at Humboldt General Hospital; can you tell us a bit about your work and the things you oversee on a day-to-day basis? You have acquired an array of certifications throughout your career; can you talk about what those are and what drew you to them? Can you speak on the CMPE certification and how it has helped you? How can one best prepare to get the CMPE and how long did it take you to get it? What are the necessary steps to get the CMPE? Your career has covered a myriad of paths from large hospitals and systems to more rural areas of the country in critical access hospitals, can you talk about the differences between those two worlds? What led you to Big Timber, Montana and Winemucca, NV and how does rural medicine affect the healthcare admin side? What made you decide to enroll for a DHA? How have you managed the doctorate while working? What are some of the challenges you face being a young executive and what advice would you give to those in a similar situation? As YNOP gears up for a busy summer season, Roger and Dave talked about the work behind the scenes that has started for certain projects. The contracts are in for the satellite upgrade, so now we are making the plans for each site installation and programming. Plans are well underway for construction on our site with Harlowton being first on the list, then Glendive followed by Big Timber. Last week we talked about an Evangelism Explosion & YNOP partnership and after a conference call last week three Montana cities were selected where evangelism training will take place! More to come in the weeks ahead. Joseph is lining up new facilities for both Africa satellite networks at a faster pace than we ever thought possible, and God is opening so many doors to countries once closed. Thank you for your support that is making all this possible!
