Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is Michela Ratto of New York, by way of San Francisco. For today's episode, Michela chose to discuss Phish's performance of “The Moma Dance” with a segue into “We Are the Champions” by Queen from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco on October 29, 2014.Baseball has come up a number of times on this podcast, most notably with Hal Hansen, who chose to discuss Phish's show from June 28, 2000 at the Garden State Arts Center. The baseball aspect of that conversation was more about the comparison of obsessed Phish fans with statistic minded baseball savants. Today's talk with Michela goes a lot deeper and more specific than that, as she brings up the specific feeling of what it was like to be in San Francisco, rooting for her hometown team in the World Series at a Phish show, and what it's like when they clinch the championship right at the start of the second set. But that's just one part of it. Today's conversation covers a lot of ground as we discuss the fall 2014 tour, sisterhood, working at Chili's, and so much more. On top of that, there are those times at shows when something even bigger than Phish is going on in the city they're playing and yet they manage to fuse it into their playing, harnessing the excitement in the air both outside and inside the venue. For Michela and San Francisco Giants fans at the Bill Graham, this was one of those nights.  You'll also hear Michela mention a few times that she and I go to a lot of shows together–there's a good reason for that. We're engaged! By the time this episode airs, she and I should be on our way to getting married, so this was a personal interview in a lot of ways. But that's a bigger story even than Phish. So in the meantime, let's join Michela to chat about the best sandwiches in Saratoga Springs, the king of ground scores, and JT Snow saving the life of a young child as we go over “The Moma Dance from October 29, 2014 at The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.Audio Used in Today's EpisodePYM Anxiety Chews

Compiler Error This week's Compiler Error has a theme: WWDC! 1 - Marking the start of the jacket trend that would be used for several years, WWDC10 gave each attendee a black track jacket with the number 10 stitched on the back. 2 - WWDC12 was the last event hosted by Steve Jobs, but did see the introduction of the final generation of AirPort Extremes and Time Capsules, which would no longer be updated. 3 - WWDC13 sold out in a tremendously fast 71 seconds, but some attendees would later say attendance was worth it since it featured Phil Schiller's "Can't innovate anymore, my ass!" quote. 4 - WWDC16 marked the first departure from holding the Keynote at the Moscone Center in years by hosting it at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium instead.

Welcome to the sixth mini-episode of Attendance Bias. Mini-episodes feature a breakdown of a single song or jam from a show that I’ve attended. I’ll pick a song or jam for any given reason—it was the highlight of the show, it meant something special to me, it's widely renown--who knows? Mini-episodes are posted on a bi-weekly basis in between full episodes of Attendance Bias, when a guest and I will go over a full Phish show.Today's episode focuses on "Character Zero," played on 7/20/16 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California. This show was the last of three nights at the venue. These shows were played during the 2nd half of the 2016 summer tour, when the band took a west coast swing from the Gorge, then south to San Francisco before heading down the coast to the Forum in Los Angeles. The first set of this show was filled with rarities, which thrilled me, and the 2nd set was a bit more conservative (but still fun!).And there's nothing more conservative and traditional than a "Character Zero" encore. However, this "Zero" was unique. Rather than the simple structure of a quiet opening before guitar fireworks (although there was that), the audience immediately took over vocal duties for the verses. I'd been in loud venues before. I'd heard loud singalongs before. But never so up close to the point where the band stepped back from the mics and let the crowd completely take over. It was more than a singalong; it was synergy. It was a direct link between the crowd and the band in real time. I'd felt and witnessed a lot of things at Phish, but never something like this before or after.AUD recording for this episode: "Character Zero"

He grew up in Westhampton, Long Island but after high school decided to head west to see what opportunities existed for him. He used his interest in journalism to find work around town which helped him gain access to clubs and shows. On the advice of a friend at the Fillmore he started mixing bands in the small “poster” room upstairs and immediately a love affair with audio was born. The audio crew took him under their wing and over the next four years trained and mentored him. Eventually he started mixing monitors at the Fillmore and the rest as they say, is history. Episode 012 of *The Upful Life Podcast* welcomes the lovely and talented Jasmine Fraser, a West Coast DJ best known as Naughty Princess. Jasmine is a rising star in the bass music underground, and we were lucky to get her on the show for fascinating conversation that lasts just under an hour. This took place the day after her huge set at Resonate in Oakland, and Jasmine was a really good sport this rainy San Francisco afternoon. We had to chase my phone down, because I dropped it somewhere in transit, and luckily a Good Samaritan scooped it up. Once I retrieved said device, we settled into her gold minivan on a random city block for a proper conversation about music... and life.  NAUGHTY PRINCESS INTERVIEW STARTS AT 18:30   Topics include her formative years in Melbourne, AUS, as Jasmine takes us back to the ashrams of her youth and how chanting to ecstatic states affected her as a kid. A little bit on Trance music, before we sort of time-travel into 2010 pretty quickly. She reflects on catching Bassnectar on his way up at a small SF club, and how that scene and community welcomed her at a transitional moment in her life. Fraser also discusses the mentorship of An-ten-nae, and details the nature their collaboration "Hearts". Then things get a little heavy, in the best kind of way. Jasmine's father was Andy Fraser, bassist for legendary British band Free, a member of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Jasmine explains how it was Andy's 2015 death that really propelled her to become a DJ, and the Naughty Princess was born. We recall our chance meeting at Burning Man 2016, both of us consumed by the grief of the loss of our respective fathers, and how that brief but potent exchange on Playa bonded us for life.     Since she identifies as a feminist, I asked her to share some thoughts and feelings on the patriarchy, specifically in the music world and festival culture, We talk a lot about Trap music themes, and rap music's misogynist lyrics, with regard to how fans respond to the messages found within songs. Jasmine tells a potent personal story about a Burning Man performance, when a young woman reached out to her after the set, concerned about a single song Naughty Princess played. This reflection turns into a meditation on the innate power of language and how even she and I are affected. Naughty Princess also touches on some less controversial topics, like tabla-trap, ecstatic dance vs. urban dancefloors, Nevada City CA, and much more... with the consistently-amazing Jasmine Fraser. (1hr 8mins) PLUS a short chat with red-hot Atlanta producer Daily Bread, who checks in about his career momentum, dope collaborations and more. Rhett explains why D.I.T.C. and NYC boom-bap influenced this native ATLien more than the crunk and Dungeon hometown heroes. Shout-out to Whit Hawkins and the Hawk's Nest roster. Included towards the end of Episode 012 (1hr 27mins) is a humorous and informative interview with Shepherds Meadow Farms master grower Brandon. A Mendocino County, CA-based organic ganja farmer who (some of) you may recall heaved a giant sack of cannabis onstage to Jay Kay of Jamiroquai last April at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. After much hullabaloo, we finally get the 411 on that craziness, and while we were at it, a little Q&A about how a small farmer grows 100% organic craft cannabis. This conversation took place in December, on Sunday night at the tail end of The Emerald Cup, and it's safe to say that the weekend full of weed had taken a toll by the time I conducted this interview. Please excuse my blaziness.  *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week*, (1hr 39mins) we want to honor the memory of the late, great Kofi Burbridge. A true icon of our music community, friend, brother, otherworldly multi-instrumentalist. A first ballot Spirit of Suwannee Hall of Famer. Instead of a moment of silence, we will hear his music to honor his memory. I've chosen a celebrated collaboration in tribute to Kofi Burbridge, his appearance alongside trusty axeman Derek Trucks, both sitting in with the home team, Lettuce, at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, for Bear Creek's 2009 finale. If you were at this set, then you remember how truly special it was. Rest in Power, Kofi.     The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes!
