Known as the powerhouse behind companies like Skims and Good American, Grede says she takes issue with the phrase "self-made". Raised by a single mom in East London, Grede worked her way up through the fashion world, but she says her partners and mentors helped get her to where she is today. She opened up to Hoda about her childhood, and balancing motherhood with her career.
In this episode of The goop Podcast, Gwyneth sits down with Emma Grede—the force behind some of fashion's most influential and cultural shifting-brands. Jens Grede, co-founder and chief executive of Kim Kardashian's new underwear label Skims says he finds inspiration in the creation story behind Nike's Air Jordans. The cross-generational line of basketball shoes started in the 80s remains a part of global culture, and Grede says he aims to do the same with the celebrity influencer and her new brand. He joins this week's In the City with host David Merritt and reporter Katie Linsell to discuss the brand's identity and expansion plans. Next year, Skims will open stores in New York and Los Angeles. But it also has an aggressive, global expansion plan that starts in the UK. This week, in Season 14 Episode 5 of Shark Tank, Emma Grede is in the tank for an episode cozier (and even more flammable) than a faux-mink cape. We'll examine the troubling relationship between a momtrepreneur and her young daughtertrepreneuer, and talk to a Real British Person about why Americans prefer things that are disgusting. Hey, Chums! Welcome to the officially unofficial Shark Tank podcast, with decidedly un-business savvy friends & co-hosts, Alyssa and Sylvie (plus guest appearances by noted "tank guy," Ralph). We break down each episode's drama, intrigue, and offers (or lack thereof) each week, so swim on back for more chum about Lori Greiner, Mark Cuban, Kevin O'Leary, Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran, and Robert Herjavec.
There is a great deal to the colossal mess of the bankruptcy of FTX, the almost absurdly mismanaged "crypto exchange" run by Sam Bankman-Fried and, well, apparently no one else. @Messy Times is honored to host Fred Grede who aside from being a fellow University of Chicago alumnus is a very experienced exchange executive and the former bankruptcy trustee who for a decade worked out the Sentinel Management Group collapse starting in 2007, which featured significant financial fraud. Join us as we touch on a number of the crucial factors which will impact how this whole investigation and bankruptcy process plays out. Legal jurisdiction - Bahamas v. United States - will likely arise very quickly. Status of creditors, status of customers, the role of equity investors, how Sam's $40 million donations to Democrats in the midterms will impact proceedings are just the tip of the massive mountain of his screw up. There are to be determined complexities around whether any of the groups owned money will form up as a class or whether some larger players will decide to assert claims on their own. All of this and more will be bearing down on Sam and his cohorts living - for now - in the Bahamas. In this episode we're going to mix things up a bit and interview two people at once: the founder and the chairwoman of the Fifteen Percent Pledge, Aurora James and Emma Grede. As the founder of Brother Vellies—a brand initially aimed at highlighting African artisan shoemakers—Aurora James learned exactly how difficult it is to gain traction as an up-and-coming company, particularly from the vantage point of an underrepresented segment of the population. So, in May of 2020 immediately following the death of George Floyd, when people began asking the question, "What can we do to help support the Black community?" Aurora came up with an idea called the Fifteen Percent Pledge. She took to Instagram to challenge large retailers to dedicate 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses. Enter Emma Grede, herself held in high regard throughout the fashion industry, who messaged Aurora directly with an inspired conviction to help this idea grow. Emma, cofounder of the very successful brands Good American and SKIMS, brought her extensive business background and connections to the table, helping to grow the philanthropic initiative into a larger nonprofit organization. Together, Aurora and Emma have created tangible and sustainable change for Black-owned businesses with the goal of building long-lasting generational wealth in Black communities. Nordstrom is proud to have been an early adopter of the Fifteen Percent Pledge, and I'm super excited to help highlight this really important initiative that has made a big impact on our industry already. After that you're going to hear my chat with Shaina Shepherd, a real rising star in the Seattle music scene. I met her years ago as our bands crossed paths at various events, but more recently, as Nordstrom started trying to find some music to accompany our marketing campaigns, Shaina's name popped into my head as the perfect voice to attach to the particular song we chose. So, join me now as we learn a little more about her story and how she came to be sitting here with me today. Thanks for tuning in to Episode 12. We hope you enjoy! The multitasking entrepreneur joins BoF founder and chief executive Imran Amed to discuss the personal and professional journey that led him to co-create the category-disrupting brand Skims with Kim Kardashian. Background: Jens Grede has built some of the most successful direct-to-consumer brands in American fashion. Alongside his wife Emma, he launched Brady with Tom Brady, Good American with Khloe Kardashian, and, of course, Kim Kardashian's category-disrupting Skims. This week on the BoF Podcast, the Swedish-born former ad man joins BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed to discuss his journey through the fashion industry — from realising one of his early dreams of creating an ad for Calvin Klein to to elevating Skims into a once-in-a generation brand in the vein of Lululemon or Nike's Jordan brand. “I've waited my whole career to be part of a moment like this, and I'm very scared of messing it up,” says Grede. “At the same time, I know that if we stop experimenting, if we stop innovating, that is the fastest way to mess it up.” Key Insights: Cultivating a sense of community is one of the only ways to scale a brand now, according to Grede. Great community starts with creating for yourself: products you like, want to buy and can afford. Grede describes one of his biggest mistakes — attempting to trademark the brand name “Kimono” with Kardashian — as one of the most important moments of his career because of what he learned about community and partnership. He said the Skims team listened, owned the mistake and pivoted. Fashion is at the cusp of a huge change in distribution due to pivots in culture, algorithms and the outsized role of social media. Grede thinks every major fashion brand that has scaled successfully was born in the cracks of a major distribution change. The world is starting to get back to work which means many women are turning to shapewear brands to help counteract the last few months of comfort food consumption. So I thought this would be a perfect time to chat with Jens Grede. Jens is the partner and board director of Kim Kardashian West’s shapewear brand SKIMS. And this Sweden native is a savvy fashion executive whose eclectic career path has given him quite a unique and clear-eyed perspective on the industry. After a stint working at the interior design magazine Wallpaper* at the start of his career, at the tender age of 25, Jens decided to start Saturday, a London-based creative agency. He launched it in 2003 with his business partner Eric Torstensson. The organization quickly grew to include a stable of companies focused on everything from brand management, public relations, and art direction to talent brokering, e-commerce, and publishing - in the form of the highly respected Industrie magazine. Later renamed Saturday Group, with offices in the four fashion capitals, the business eventually also dove into the apparel side of fashion when, in 2012, it debuted the well regarded California lifestyle brand FRAME. Today, along with his duties as co-executive chairmen and co-executive creative director of FRAME, Jens also has taken up the task of scaling the shapewear phenomenon that is SKIMS. The brainchild of Kim Kardashian West, the company has seen exponential growth since its launch in September of 2019. Its inclusive approach to shapewear with its broad size range and extensive skin tone color options has seen the company sell out of most of its stock within the 24 hours of a drop and has garnered an enviable loyal client base with 38% of first-time shoppers becoming returning customers. During our Zoom video call, Jens and I talked about the difficulties of trying to break into a market that is dominated by a single player. How hands-on Kim is with the creative direction of the company, the clear advantages of e-commerce focused business built on transparency, and how Jens plans to expand the growing SKIMS empire into new categories. Just on a technical side note, I did want to let all you listeners know that because Jens and I did our interview over Zoom video you might pick up on a couple of very minor audio issues. And if you happen to be more of a visual learner, feel free to head over to my signature YouTube channel to watch the video version of this podcast in action. Ok, now it's time to discover just how Jens sees the future of both fashion and SKIMS.
Jens Grede's denim-first fashion line, Frame, was growing fast until the pandemic hit. The company has 10 stores and had planned to double that number in 2020. Instead, the company is looking to 2021. "I'm still very confident about our store strategy right now," Grede said on the Glossy Podcast. Whenever doors do open again, Grede said they'll have a lower customer capacity, masks for visitors and employees, and an emphasis on keeping things clean. "Safety for our employees and our customers is and has to be everyone's top priority right now. Long term? We don't know anything about the long term," Grede said. Still, he has faith in the brick-and-mortar model, even as Frame's e-commerce sales are up "close to 300%" over the last few months, thanks in part to a 25% off sale. "It's really replaced [the sales of] all of our physical stores, and a little bit more than that." Making up for the revenue from wholesale is a bridge too far, however. And if Grede could go back in time in anticipation of the pandemic, he would have geared the company toward direct-to-consumer sales earlier. "And I'm not talking about 2019, I'm talking about 2017 or '16," Grede said. "Times were very good in wholesale. Too good, in fact." In general, Grede thinks the fashion industry should react to the pandemic with an idea also reflected in politics: bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. "Fashion brands have to carry less inventory. For that to be possible, we have to be able to turn inventory faster than we've done in the past. For that to be possible, we have to bring back manufacturing to the United States. That is the long and the short of it," Grede said.
We brought IN THE DRESSING ROOM to LA to sit down with Emma Grede, Founder and CEO of Good American—one of EVEREVE’s bestselling denim brands. Emma founded Good American in 2016 along with Khloe Kardashian, with the dream of creating a fashion line designed to fit and flatter curvier shaped women. Emma is a leader who isn’t afraid to work hard and dream big. She’s a fierce business woman and thoughtful leader—and today she's sharing her secrets to success, as well as an inside look at the making of a revolutionary denim brand. Emma has showed me that warm and cool CAN go together, and I know you’re going to enjoy learning from her as much as I do.
FRAME Co-Founder and Chairman Jens Grede was already an advertising rockstar alongside his business partner Erik Torstensson when he decided he needed a change. Pairing his deep connections within the fashion industry with his own branding savvy, Jens zeroed in on Los Angeles to launch a premium denim line like no other, and FRAME was born. Find out why Jens put lifestyle at the core of the FRAME brand, how the company set itself apart in a saturated market, and what Jens wants to conquer next.
After years of working in the fashion industry, Emma Grede felt exhausted by the lack of diversity on runways, in ads, and behind the scenes. When she had the brilliant idea for Good American, a size-inclusive fashion brand, she brought her pitch directly to Khloe Kardashian, who shared in her desire to truly diversify the fashion world and mediascape. In 2016, they launched their brand with a wide array of sizes, and have continued to put their money where their morals are with diverse campaigns. This week on Girlboss Radio, Grede talks about creating the pitch that changed her life, the future of the fashion industry, and scaling a company while keeping her values at the heart of it all. Shoppers are increasingly demanding transparency in all dimensions of their buying experience -- from supply chains to the customer service experience. Emme Grede, co-founder of the two-year-old denim brand Good American, says building trust with customers is about showing the good, bad and the ugly parts equally.
Frame -- which started as a side project for founders Jens Grede and Erik Torstensson while working full time at the agency they started, Wednesday -- is on track to hit $120 million sales in its sixth year. Grede joined the Glossy Podcast to talk about why he doesn't worry much about distribution strategies, what's behind his brand's approach to being a lifestyle business and how it places limitations on itself in terms of growth.
To hit its next growth stride, denim and apparel brand Good American has to look beyond the passionate followers of famous co-founder Khloé Kardashian. Grede joined the Glossy Podcast to discuss why mainstream sizing is outdated, why she didn't want to sell only online and how online brands can thrive in a wholesale setting.
