Join Tamara for an interview (actually, we're calling it a conversation!) with notable movie producer Andrew Meyer. What exactly does a movie producer do? You better believe we cover that in the first few minutes!  Andrew spent years in Hollywood, where he served as the President of Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss' A&M Films, Robert Redford's Wildwood Productions, and Norman Lear's Act All Productions. For the past 20 years, he has lived in Savannah and worked as a Professor of Film and Television at SCAD. Notable among the many films Andrew has produced are Fried Green Tomatoes, nominated for two Academy Awards; The Breakfast Club, which Entertainment Weekly named “The Best High School Movie of all Time;” Birdy, which won the Grand Prix Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival; and the iconic fan favorite Better Off Dead. He recently published his second book, Walking In the Fast Lane - purchase it online here for now, and it will come out in print later in January! https://tinyurl.com/3rdrcnku   Check out more of Andrew's work and follow him here: https://andrewmeyerentertainment.com/ https://www.instagram.com/andyhmeyer839/    Topics in their chat include: The different types of producers; how Andrew's best advice to become a producer is to option a book (acquire the rights); his early career as a music producer and a story of how the Police had to fight for "Roxanne" to be a single; his sabbatical year of traveling around the world, which ended when he received a telegram (!); the usefulness of learning the "Movie Magic" software; how The Breakfast Club went from being a small indie movie to a much larger-budget movie with a much better set; why authors are frequently not great at adapting their own work into a screenplay; the 2 different types of screenwriters; the fact that Stephen King sells the rights to some of his short stories for just $1, allowing aspiring filmmakers and students to adapt them into movies; and his job interview with Robert Redford that involved him traveling to Sundance and then being asked to ride horses through mountain territory together. Tune in and get all the details!

He is the recipient of the 2013 Hal David Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He also won the BMI Songwriter of the Year Award five non-consecutive times, and won the 2017 iHeartRadio Producer of the Year Award.Blanco was initially mentored by songwriter and producer Dr. Luke, who signed Blanco to his production company Kasz Money Productions. Under his tutelage, Blanco co-produced and co-wrote a multitude of hit singles in the late 2000s and thereafter. Blanco's work has led to sales of over 500 million album-equivalent units worldwide for artists including Ed Sheeran, BTS, Eminem, Justin Bieber, Halsey, Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Christina Aguilera, Kesha, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Sia, The Weeknd, Kanye West, Avicii, Selena Gomez, Adam Lambert, Charlie Puth, Keith Urban, OneRepublic, Wiz Khalifa, J Balvin, Ariana Grande, Kali Uchis, Juice Wrld, and SZA.In July 2018, Blanco released his debut single as a lead artist, "Eastside" (with Halsey and Khalid). The song peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100—marking his 27th top-ten song as a writer, a sum which includes seven number one singles on the chart—while peaking the charts in four countries, and reaching the top ten in several others. It was followed by the singles "I Found You" (with Calvin Harris), "Better to Lie" (with Jesse and Swae Lee), "Roses" (with Brendon Urie and Juice Wrld), and "Graduation" (with Juice Wrld). His debut studio album, Friends Keep Secrets was released in December of that year to modest success. A deluxe issue of the album was released in March 2021, a date which coincided with the original receiving platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).Blanco has founded two labels as imprints of Interscope Records—Mad Love Records and Friends Keep Secrets—in 2014, through both of which he has signed artists including Tory Lanez, Jessie Ware, and Cashmere Cat, among others. After Friends Keep Secrets and Mad Love were dissolved in 2024, Blanco owns an imprint of Interscope, A&M Records (founded by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss in 1962).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 12:18 UTC on Friday, 13 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Benny Blanco on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Emma.

PULSARS mark the end of that era. Leader Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, synths production and most anything else) and his younger brother Harry (drums) grew up playing music in a suburban Chicago basement.  While still in his teens, Dave abandoned college-level music production and engineering studies to focus on songwriting and artist endeavors; his native talents soon found him an apprenticeship at Seagrape Studios working with talents as disparate as house music pioneer Mr Fingers, British first-wave stalwarts The Pretty Things and dub plate sessions with the legendary reggae producer / musician Niney The Observer . . . all within months of his first real go behind the mixing desk. Chicago's past musical glories felt far in the past then, replaced by a sea of skinny tie power pop bands, poofy hair metal combos of some timidity and a few rough-hewn exponents of sub-Buzzcocks punk and Fiorucci-ready new wave.  Ignoring it all, Dave ran a small studio in a shared house he rented with friends before taking the risky - and expensive - plunge into opening a 'real' studio on the northwest corner of Wicker Park, soon to burst into a degree of infamy due to a small contingent of cult heroes who lived there for cheap rent and cheaper bars - Liz Phair, Eleventh Dream Day, Big Black, Urge Overkill, Tortoise et al. Daves role in all of this was minimal by nature; he preferred to record acts from farther afield - Billy Bragg, then-recent Chicago transplants Wilco, The Mekons, Young Marble Giants guitarist and songwriter Stuart Moxham, Barbara Manning, Captain Beefhearts main man Gary Lucas, an array of other acts from Iceland, Australia and all corners of the UK.  Business was good, and it grew.  A quick writer of odd pop ditties, one day Dave called in his brother Harry and recorded - in a single afternoon session - a set of nine demos known.  The story's been related countless times, but within weeks the band was opening for Oasis and found itself being courted by a dozen labels. Their few local shows were undefinable. Dave played guitar and sang, Harry drummed triggered a reel of additional music, often with video backing . . . which dazzled spectators in that pre-laptop era.  After months of negotiations, the band signed a multi-million deal with Almo Sounds, a new label begun by A&M founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and distributed by Geffen.  It was - and likely still is - the largest deal ever offered to an emerging Chicago musical act. The band engaged in numerous tours to support their self-titled debut, playing with Sean Lennon & Cibo Matto, Blur, Supergrass, and many others, as well as seemingly infinite jaunts to Japan, where Dave and Harry were hailed as heroes of subversive minimalist pop - the ecstatic screams of young fans at the first few notes of Submission To The Master& at first bewildering the brothers.  Suddenly, the Almo Sounds deal with Geffen fell apart at the start of a tour supporting then-current sensations Weezer.  Promotion was pulled; radio support for the first single from the album collapsed in a mere moment. Due to contractual vagaries, the band was allowed to complete a second (unreleased) album just before the label folded.  And that was it, until the news of the 2021 release of Pulsar Transmissions", a collection of unheard songs and versions that the band recorded before and during their short-term deal.  Rolling Stone offered their self titled debut ;Pulsars as one of the 40 greatest albums ever recorded by an act with one real album:     PULSARS's Info Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/pulsarsband/?hl=en X / Twitter:  https://x.com/PulsarsBand Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pulsarsofficial/

Lickers Jay and Deon wax poetic on ten of their favorite records from their respective collections which are filed under the letter J. Their choices lead to discussions on Blindboy Boatclub (he rules), the origins of their nicknames (do you even know these guys?), another blind-bought Burger Records beauty (Jay is a total Burger fanboy), Steve Albini (R.I.P.), and much more. Tune in and rock out! --- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-seventh episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. Herb Alpert: you'll never find a more beloved figure in the pop music world. A mensch. Did you think he was Latin? Nope. He IS an Angeleno, but….he was a Jewish kid, born in Boyle Heights; went to Fairfax High and USC. Before “cultural appropriation” became a dirty word, Herbie had a revelation while attending a bullfight in Baja - came back with “The Lonely Bull”, and ignited a career that has won him a Tony, 8 Grammies, and, a National Medal of Arts. He is the only musician to have #1 hits, both as a vocalist and instrumentalist. In his mid-sixties heyday he outsold The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Frank Sinatra. Always smiling behind his trumpet, the handsome Mr. Alpert became an unlikely pin-up, then he scored big-time as a record producer and mogul (with partner Jerry Moss), and today, at 88, as an artist of renown, crafting massive sculptural installations and paintings, he continues to thrive creatively. I guess you could say that in addition to being a dedicated, hard worker, that he also was blessed. The Mexican Shuffle, (or, as some may remember from the chewing gum commercials)- The Teaberry Shuffle, was ubiquitous. It was all over the tv. This is happy music, pure and simple. In the ad folks of all walks of life, just going about their business, start dancing whenever they pop in a stick of Teaberry gum. And, Herbie's percolating soundtrack conveys that propulsion perfectly. (I recommend YouTubing it). The record received a sizable boost of recognition from this exposure - as did A Taste Of Honey (from the Whipped Cream and Other Delights album) - as The Dating Game theme song. Along with Motown and The Beatles, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass were the soundtrack of the 60s.

What do you get when you cross bossa nova with jazz and funk? You get Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. Sergio performed with many artists through the years. He rerecorded Mas Que Nada in 2006 with the Black Eyed Peas. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss recorded Mendes and Brasil 66 on Herb Alpert's A&M record label. One of the Brasil 66 singers was Lani Hall, later Herb Alpert's wife. Sergio was unhappy when Herb stole Lani away from the group. Mendes performed his biggest hit “The Look of Love” for Presidents Richard Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson. In the 1970s his career stalled. I asked him about that. He had the hit Olympia which was used as the theme song for the Olympic games in 1984.

M9 "Treasure of San Miguel" (Roger Nichols), Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Sounds Like, A&M Records, 1967 (2:14) Herb Alpert was born in 1935, and is an American trumpeter who led the band “Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass” in the 1960s. He was born and raised in the Eastside Los Angeles. His parents were Tillie and Louis Alpert ---they were Jewish immigrants to the U.S., coming here from the Ukraine and from Romania. Alpert was born into a family of musicians. His father was a mandolin player and his mother taught violin. Herb's older brother was a drummer.  Herb began to play trumpet at the age of eight. While attending the University of Southern California in the 1950s, he was a member of the USC Trojan Marching Band for two years. In the 1960s Alpert co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss, A for Alpert and M for Moss. There are many, many measures of success in the area of popular music by which to measure the success of Herb Alpert - - ….here are just a few: He sold some 72 million records worldwide. And 28 of his albums landed on the Billboard 200 chart 5 of his albums became No. 1 albums He achieved #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as instrumentalist He has had 14 platinum albums (sold 1 million) and 15 gold albums (sold 500,000). He has received a Tony Award, eight Grammy Awards, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006…. and was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2013. One of the recording techniques Herb Alpert used in these early records was the overdubbing of the trumpet part, Starting with his first album, THE LONELY BULL, and the title track 1 on side 1.  According to Herb Alpert, he said that he had been trying to find the right trumpet voice. He tried emulating the trumpet styles of Harry James, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Clifford Brown. Oddly enough, he got inspiration NOT from these famous trumpeters, but from a guitarist named …Les Paul. Les Paul had been using multitracking his guitar  recordings. So Alpert tried multitracking his trumpet … and that multitracking became one of the signature sounds we will hear. Here is an example of the overdubbed trumpet from the song A QUIET TEAR……. (Play an example of Herb's overdubbed trumpet on the song   A QUIET TEAR  song side 2 track 6) In this overdub Herb Alpert is recording each part with the same phrasing and time … but playing the second part in harmony. Additionally Alpert does a fair amount of overdubbing and playing both parts in unison. This double-recording of one part gives Herb's trumpet an even more rich and full sound, added resonance of the instrument and added reverb or echo of the room. So overdubbing while playing the trumpet part in unison or in harmony was a signature sound of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. Here is an example from THE LONELY BULL intro….

On Jan. 14, 2023, the Music Center (link is external)in Los Angeles had a celebration concert to honor Jerry Moss. Many artists participated, and today's Listening Lyrics  plays some of their music. In 1960, Moss moved from New York to Los Angeles, where he teamed up with Herb Alpert,(link is external) forming Carnival Records in 1962 and running the company from an office in Alpert's garage. Discovering that the name was already taken, they dubbed their new company A&M Records. In 1987, Moss and Alpert sold A&M to PolyGram Records for a reported $500 million. Both continued to manage the label until 1993, when they left because of frustrations with PolyGram's constant pressure to force the label to fit into its corporate culture. In 1998, Alpert and Moss sued PolyGram for breach of the integrity clause, eventually settling for an additional $200 million.

He continued to produce hits, decade after decade, staying current and relevant while staying true to his unique sound.  This week I’m talking with my friend Bobby Rymer who owns the publishing company Writer’s Den Music Group in Nashville. He’s worked his way from the bottom to the top of record labels and publishing companies in the music industry and has a career that has spanned over 35 years. We are discussing the process of working your way up the ladder at publishing companies and record labels, the importance of knowing the history of the music industry, what publishers are looking for when signing new writers and the best venues to play in Nashville to get noticed by industry insiders.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*I own Writer’s Den Music Group. As a publisher I have a day gig and a night gig.*During the day I pitch songs and have meetings, etc. At night I go to showcases and meet writers and artists.*Spend money smartly.*Look over your options at what you want to accomplish and how.*You don’t have to have an office anymore if you have a laptop and a phone you can do most of your work that way.*I was doing social work and realized it was not my passion and I decided to go back to school to get a degree in the music business.*My friend got a job at Capitol Records in the mail room and called and asked if I would be interested in his old job at a record store. Then 9 months later he called saying he got promoted and asked if I wanted my name put in for the mail room job at Capitol.*The mail room at a record label is the bottom of the totem pole which is where most people have to start.*Get in anyway you can and prove your worth.*Ask yourself “how bad do you want it?”*Internships and a course called "Copyright Law" are worth their weight in gold.*You really don’t start to understand how the music industry works until you’re in it working everyday and making relationships and learning how things are done.*I got to sit in on meetings and learn how you find talent and find songs.*If you can, try to work out a smaller company because you will stand out more as opposed to a larger company that just churns interns out every semester.*After about a year and a half an opening came up in A&R and I was able to move up because the label looked within before looking out.*My main job in A&R was to go out and find songs for the artists on the label by meeting with the publishers in town.*If you want to consider the music business for a career, you better know your history.*When looking for songs for artists, I would sit with the label heads after they talked with the artists to know what they were looking for.*You go out and find songs you’re passionate about and the come back and see if there’s a home for it on the label.*You have to listen to songs and see if they are checking off the boxes of things you are looking for to fit an artist.*When you are reaching out to labels or publishers, you better know who they are and the history of people they’ve worked with and what they’ve done and you better know who they are working for now.*Get Billboard Magazine and make sure you know every artist, label, producer and writer and study the charts so it becomes second nature. That is where you start. You shouldn’t have to pause when someone asks who produced or wrote the latest hit is.*Before you knock on a door or make a phone call to a company, understand who you are talking to because if you don’t they will quickly realize that you don’t want this bad enough or you haven’t done your homework.*I was A&R for about 4 years at Capitol, then there was a regime change and lost that job.*Opportunity is not going to knock on your door, you have to go out and meet it.*I kept having meetings and eventually bumped into a publisher I knew who used to play me songs and he offered me a job as a tape copier at the music publisher Almo-Irving.*Even though it was a step back from where I had been, I wanted to stay in the industry and I got the job as the tape copy, which is the ground floor at a publishing company.*A tape copy made copies of 8-10 songs on a tape and put together lyrics and a label for publishers to take to pitch meetings.*The tape copy is the best place to start at a publishing company because that’s where you learn the catalog and the songs and writers.*The writers would come down with new songs and you would put the songs in the system so you get to spend time with the writers and build relationships.*I was tape copy for about 3 years learning until a vacancy came open and I naturally moved up to song plugger.*I realized that publishing is all I ever want to do because I get to work creators who make things out of thin air and I get to help find a home for it.*A song plugger is being aware of the labels in town, the artists in town and your job is to find a home for these songs. sometimes it’s find new writers and bringing them in to the company.*As a songwriter show up and do the work and always have your antenna up because you never know where a song idea will come from.*Some songs in a publishing catalog don’t see the light of day after a while because they have a time stamp on them using certain language and melodies from the time it was written and the language and melodies maybe different now than they were then and those things change.*Maybe the song is there but the demo is dated and will turn someone off even if it’s a great song.*If the song will take it, I like demos with acoustic instruments. Don’t go crazy with reverb. Maybe do a glorified work tape and the demo has the chance of having a longer shelf life because they aren’t dating it with certain tones and sounds.*The guitar/piano vocal demo is great because that’s the way I hear it when the writer plays it for me and there is nothing getting in the way of the lyric and the melody.*If you bring a fully produced demo and the producer knows they aren’t going produce it that way, then they have to sit with the artist and start subtracting what they don’t want and that is hard for artists to hear sometimes because they are hearing it one way and being told they are going to do it a completely different way. If you have a guitar/piano vocal and say I’m going to start adding this, they get it.*Some producers need to hear the full demo as it would be on the record.*The song will dictate what it needs as a demo ultimately.*resumes mean nothing in this business. It’s all relationship based.*I worked for Almo-Irving for 14 years and eventually ran the Nashville office. It got bought out by Universal Music Group so after a year off I started a publishing company called Writer’s Den Music Group.*Write what you know. Your story’s already been written. Tell it!*People say “no” to songs I think are hits because this is an art, not a science and everyone has their own opinion. Find people who have similar tastes to you and send them songs that fit you similar personalities. If people have different tastes than you, find out what they are.*This business is an educated guessing game.*You have to be careful to not create demos that are too much like an artist because if they pass on it and you pitch elsewhere, those artists or labels think it sounds like that particular artist and once they find out the previous artist passed on it, they think something is wrong with the song and it will not get cut.*Don’t pitch what they’ve done, pitch what they might be doing.*Write what’s familiar to all of us but unique to you.*It’s the music business, not the music I’ll do whatever I want and hope it works.*For tv/film sync music you have to stand out and offer something that no one else is.*We need the first you, not the second anybody else.*It’s about creating a mood.*Everything is negotiable.*Music supervisors only want songs that are pre cleared so they don’t have to wait 3-4 days to to get an answer from a publisher if they want to license a song.*As a publisher when I want to sign a new writer I’m looking for songs that have a good lyric and melody. If I can whistle it, I’m in.*I’m not looking the next whoever, I’m looking for the first you.*Great writers have a thumbprint like great singers do and you know within the first few seconds who wrote the song.*I’m looking for someone who can write a song told a thousand different times, told from a different angle.*If someone is reaching out to me wanting to get signed to a publishing deal, the best thing is to meet me at workshops and conferences where we can meet in person. That’s what I’m there for. Most of the time it’s by word of mouth from people I know or at songwriter nights when I go to listen to new writers.*I close my eyes when I listen to songs because I want to see the movie you’ve created. If I don’t like a song it’s because I’m seeing it and feeling it.*Maybe I’m not crazy about the song, but there are a couple of lines that are new and fresh and that will make me want to talk to the writer because that might be the tip of the iceberg for something greater.*I’m looking for potential.*Hone your craft so that when someone listens to it, there is nothing they can suggest to make it better.*You can’t control God given talent, but you can control work ethic.*I prefer to sign writers to long term contracts, not single songs because I want to build a relationship. I like to court a writer for period of time to get to know each other before I sign them.*I’m looking for a certain amount of talent and a work ethic.*Find people who will give you a leg up you do the same for others.*If we don’t see you, if we don’t hear you, you don’t exist.*Be out and play out. You need to play out 1 night and be out 4 or more. *You never know who you’re going to be standing next to or see on stage that you can develop a relationship with.*Play out so people can see you.*There are venues for tourists and venues for industry people. Play the venues such as The Local, Belcourt Taps, Douglas Corner, 3rd and Lindsley and The Bluebird where the industry people attend.*If you’re playing at these venues, you’re going to find your “class” of people to rise up with at that is usually at the earlier shows from 5-7pm. You want to be hanging around those people.*It’s about making smart decisions, hanging out at the right places at the right times, giving yourself opportunities and letting people see you are out and about and proactive. Eventually someone will take notice and you’re going to get invited to the next level. Bobby Rymer is the owner and general manager of the Nashville based music publishing company Writer’s Den Music Group.Writer’s Den was originally started in 2007 with Rymer at the helm. The extraordinary musical journey of former lead vocalist of The Delltones and also The Crescents, Col Loughnan, is an amazing tale. A bona fide singing pop star, with a swag of hit records - Col gave it all away to play the saxophone - in a short space of time he would go on to become a member of the famed Daly-Wilson Big Band, before joining Ayers Rock, a band that would go onto make some incredible rock soundscapes. Ayers Rock were the first Australian band to tour the American stadium circuit, playing before massive crowds in the years prior to the Aussie onslaught by the likes of LRB, AC/DC, INXS etc. - We sure do love to abbrev. down under. Rita Coolidge was one of the staples of Top 40 and Adult Contemporary radio in the 1970s and early 1980s. She’s back with a new album entitled 'Safe in the Arms of Time,' which takes a unique look at love, life and relationships. The songs on the album reflect the maturity of someone who has already gone through the highs and lows of love and is now experiencing what the emotion is like at this stage of her life. Coolidge gives voice to the realization that relationships and romance don’t end after you reach a certain age, but that they are filtered through years of experiences. Legendary Delta blues musician Keb Mo is featured on the album. He co-wrote two of the songs and sings a duet with Coolidge on “Walking on Water.” The album was produced by Ross Hogarth and is on Blue Ělan Records, a company quietly gaining a reputation as an artists’ label, because of the way it embraces performers of all ages and genres. Coolidge says Blue Ělan reminds her of her days at A&M Records, when Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss were running the independent label as an artist friendly, family company. Included in the review is a brief look at Coolidge’s career in the 70s and 80s.

With eight albums selling over two million records and worldwide hits like "Jackie Blue" and "If You Want To Get To Heaven" the Ozark Mountain Daredevils have come a long way from the Missouri bars and porches where their music was born. It all began for the Daredevils in 1971 when a collection of singer songwriters from the Springfield area put together a band as an outlet for their songwriting. They Played their first gig near the end of 1971 and, in the spring of the following year, went into the studio to make a demo tape. The tape came to the attention of David Anderle at A&M Records, who liked what he heard and passed the tape on to A&M president, Jerry Moss. This resulted in the band signing to A&M with Anderle and Glyn Johns producing, thus the Daredevils were off to London to Make their first album at the famed Olympic Studios. This first album contained the smash hit "If You Wanna Get To Heaven" written by Cash and Dillon, and produced a gold album. The pop"Jackie Blue", written by Cash and Larry Lee, came from the second album "It'll Shine When It Shines", and was a top-five worldwide record. The band has made subsequent albums, and continues to build their audience through records and touring across the U.S. and Canada, performing for their large cult following. The band was described by Rolling Stone Magazine as "A mixture of Country, Appalchia, the south, and Rock & Roll". Michael Granda chats with Slacker.

Agnes De Mille once wrote, “No trumpets sound when the important decisions of our life are made. Destiny is made known silently.”Agnes was right about most of us, but she was completely wrong about Herbert. Herbert sculpts and paints. Abstract expressionism is his thing. “It's like jazz,” he says. “Art is a feel. I like to journey into a world where words don't exist.”Edgar “Yip” Harburg, the lyricist who wrote Judy Garland's wistful Somewhere Over the Rainbow, once made a similar observation. “Words make you think thoughts.Music makes you feel a feeling. But a song makes you feel a thought.”But now we're getting ahead of ourselves. The story of Herbert and the bullfight begins in 1930, when Louis, a mandolin-playing Ukrainian Jewish tailor, comes to America and falls in love with Tillie Goldberg on New York's Lower East Side. They get hitched, move to L.A. and have two little boys and a girl. In 1955, first-son David is a well-known drummer and second-son Herbert is a trumpet player in the marching band at USC. Daughter Mimi is learning to play piano. In 1962, Herbert is in the garage recording a trumpet song called “Twinkle Star” when he decides to take a break and drive to Mexico. He recently told the story on CBS Sunday Morning. “Tijuana had some world-class matadors, and this trumpet section in the stands, you know, they would announce the different programs, the different events in the bullfight. “Ta-Dahh! Pa-Da Dattle-Da-Dattle Da-Dahhh. I got kind of, uh, chill bumps from all that stuff and I tried to translate the feelings of those afternoons to a song.”Herbert returns home, flavors “Twinkle Star” with the soft and spicy taste of a Tijuana afternoon, and renames it, “The Lonely Bull.” He mails his record to some radio stations and the song becomes a Top Ten hit. Encouraged, Herbert hires some other musicians to play alongside him. Their exotic, jazzy groove is often described as “blithe, Latin-over-lilt,” so it's easy to understand why everyone thinks Herb and his boys are Hispanic. But not one of them has a drop of Spanish blood. Herb describes his band as, “four lasagnas, two bagels, and an American cheese.” Audiences know them as “Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.” In 1966, they sold more records than the Beatles.Herbert goes on to score five No. 1 hits, 15 gold albums, 14 platinum albums and win eight Grammy Awards. No one but Herb has ever had 4 albums simultaneously in the Top 10. Seventy-two million record albums is quite a few to sell, don't you think? But Herbert is just getting started. Immediately following the success of The Lonely Bull, he convinces Jerry Moss to become his business partner. Alpert and Moss produce and distribute their fantastically successful Tijuana Brass albums under their own record label, A&M. In 1969, Herb discovers a brother/sister duo that becomes fantastically successful as well: Richard and Karen Carpenter. Soon A&M is producing 400 different bands and artists, many of whom will see the stars align to spell their names in the midnight sky. In 1989, Herb sold A&M Records to Polygram for 500 million dollars. And it all began when the son of a Ukranian tailor decided to http://mondaymemo.wpengine.com/newsletters/the-price-of-creativity/ (push himself beyond his comfort zone) and go on a road trip to Mexico.
