THE GROUP BLISS was a warm breeze that emerged from chilly Denmark in 2001, the project of writer/producers MARK-GEORGE ANDERSON and STEFFEN AASKOVEN. Original vocalists TCHANDO from Guinea-Bissau and ALEXANDRA HAMNEDE (hahm-NYED-eh) from Sweden, brought soulful African and refined jazz elements to the group's polished mix of pop songcraft, subtle ambient electronics, ethnic and classical elements. Successful in Europe from the start, their music appeared on dozens of compilations and soundtracks. Four more excellent albums followed between 2003 and 2013, establishing BLISS as elite artists in the popular ambient/downtempo/chill genre. It took five years before they released an album in the U.S. and started building an international fanbase. They'd be household names in the States if not for the fact that the word "bliss" is apparently irresistible to musicians; more than a dozen other artists exploit the name or use it as a title, leaving a confusing mess for all of them. Oh, to encounter an integrated minister! We all want to be integrated -- to be ourselves in the pulpit and also out of it. But it's tricky to pull off. Pharisaical elements in the church -- usually one or two individuals in the parish, who are present -- unconsciously -- in order to hide out themselves in some way or another -- can't long abide a minister who is himself or herself. Most of your listeners love it. But there are one or two who, well, have an allergy. (They are the ones that can get you every time.) But then along comes someone like 'Mr. Tryan' in George Eliot's Scenes of Clerical Life. He breaks the mold. Or, somewhat spectacularly, Dr. Syn. Dr. Syn, who was known in the movies as 'Dr. Bliss', is just about the most thoroughly integrated Anglican clergyman in history. Could any of us be like him? Dr. Syn is a brilliant swordsman, an agile swinger from church chandeliers, a powerful preacher, a rousing music leader, a crafty smuggler, a loving father, a wily impeder of the taxation and revenue service, and a kindly pastor to his entire flock. He is Robin Hood and 'Fletcher of Madeley' rolled into one. Dr. Syn makes one wish to keep on going. Hope you like him. Maybe we can do a breakout in his honor at Mockingbird. But everyone who comes will need to bring preaching bands, and a phosphorescent mask.

Author and illustrator Harry Bliss appears at the 2011 National Book Festival. Speaker Biography: Cartoonist and illustrator Harry Bliss grew up in an artistic family: His brother, sister and father are all artists. Readers of The New Yorker are very familiar with Bliss' work, as he has illustrated many of that magazine's covers. He is also a well-known illustrator of children's books, including "A Fine, Fine School" by Sharon Creech, which was a New York Times best-seller. His single-paned comic, "Bliss," is syndicated in more than 50 newspapers in the United States and Japan. Bliss' new book is "Bailey."
