You're probably reading the title to this podcast going, what? a podcast from 2018? Yes, this is a never before aired episode that Ryan and I recorded at Bourbon Bonanza back in 2018. So here's the story. Bourbon Bonanza was an offshoot event that would happen during Kentucky Bourbon Festival but wasn't associated with the festival. It was tied in with Willett so there were a lot of influential people at the time that came to this event. Ryan and I took our equipment, plus our very first release of Pursuit Series, into what was Harrison-Smith House at the time which is now the new Chicken Cock visitor center and we sat down with Bill Thomas of Jack Rose in Washington DC and Mike Miller of Delilah's in Chicago, who still to this day run the most successful whiskey bars in the country. There is also a small appearance by Tatsumi at the very end and you will hear his story as a part of this episode. The sound environment was challenging and I wasn't happy with how the audio turned out. Let's fast forward almost 7 years and audio cleanup software has gotten so good that it's now time to release it. We talk about the festival, barrel picks, community, and trends they were seeing at the time. So here you go, a blast from the past with an unreleased archive episode.

¡Deprisa Podcasteros Atenienses! Today's episode is about Yoshihiro Tatsumi. The man who coined the term "Gekiga" and deliberately chose to make a new type of sequential art. One that explores the darkness and hardship of an adult, working class world. Thus continuing our season where we cover manga about being a manga artist. skip summary @ 5:14 084: A Drifting Life By Yoshiro Tatsumi Translation by Adrian Tomine Yoshihiro Tatsumi was born 1935 and lived to the age of 79, having died of cancer on a Saturday in March 2015, Tatsumi started doing 4 panel cartoons before doing more long form works with Hinomaru Bunko of the Shadow Magazine. In 1956 a studio was formed and named the Manga Camp, this would become the base of operations for Shadow and mangaka specialising in the genre of Gekiga, or Komaga as one of his peers called it, what they were working towards wasn't clear yet, but Shadow magazine made Manga for adults with emphasis on gritty drama inspired by hardboiled detective novels, film noir and the films of the French new wave. Gekiga would truly find its purpose in 1959 when Tatsumi made stories for the Magazines City and Skyscraper alongside his group known as the Gekiga workshop. Whom together created a Gekiga manifesto. By the early 60's even Garo magazine, whom Tatsumi turned down due to lack of pay would become successful with its own Gekiga artists such as Sanpei Shirato. This proved that there was a need for long form storytelling, aimed at adults during a time when America's occupation of Japanese land was being challenged. And at the same time an economic boom was in full bloom. Tatsumi's last Japanese published works was ‘Fallen Words' a collection of Rakugo shorts, a sort of comedic folk tales known for ending on a punch line but done in the manga medium. This was followed by his award-winning manga memoirs in 2009 which will be the topic of our episode. According to the American publishing house Drawn and Quarterly, it is unclear if his memoirs, ‘A drifting Life', was ever finished but in the edition that we've read there was a final epilogue chapter that ends with the funeral of Osamu Tezuka. Sadly, there is no mention of his marriage in his memoirs. If Tezuka is seen as the god of Manga, then Tatsumi is undoubtedly the one who helped Manga mature, scholars now recognise Tatsumi's influence more so than ever now that we live in a world where adults need manga. And in a roundabout way Tatsumi did inspire Tezuka. Topics:   Risk of defamation is the reason why the names are changed in the manga. The word used for defamation in Japanese literally translates to “Damaged Honour”, with one's honour and reputation holding an incredible amount of significance in Japanese culture. AX manga was James' first introduction to Tatsumi's work. Itself a book of alternative manga, and AX is a predecessor to Garo Magazine.   Tatsumi shines a light on the business tensions of making manga. Specifically knowing when to jump ship of a failing company. You can't work for everyone and like the old saying when it rains it pours; Or you wait a long time for one bus then three come at once. This can happen. It's wise to keep your cards close to your chest when you go out drinking with the boss, being sure not to let them know all your plans regarding the future. What stops ‘A Drifting Life' from being an entertaining read is that sensational titles and chapters rarely have a sense of tension, Tatsumi fails to convey the challenges of making manga during the 50's, oddly it makes sense that his most prolific work came out at the time that would make for boring memoirs. Because he would have met least resistance. Since the transition between magazine to Tankobon started there was a lucrative business that involved renting manga books that occurred in the late 1950's   Still Life Classes are incredibly valuable to manga artists, but as James mentioned, action figures are also good too, recommending the brands Max Factory and Figma. More so because of the control one has over poses and lighting, however there is limits to using this as a learning instrument.   The environment that Gekiga was made in is important to consider, especially when you realise that in the west, Frederic Wertham's ‘Seduction of the Innocence' grew in popularity. Note that Wertham himself was not a bad guy, He treated black kids in 1946, a time of racial segregation, opening the Lafargue Clinic within Harlem, Manhattan. After leaving the Gekiga workshop Tatsumi wrote a 120-page long form story in 20 days. The manga was Black Blizzard. Cartoonist kayfabe has an interesting video about it. A 2011 Film adaptation directed by Eric Khoo, simply called ‘Tatsumi' uses ‘A Drifting Life' as a connective frame so to tell an anthology of Tatsumi stories. The writer to ‘The Boys' is Garth Ennis, who has been very clear on his thoughts towards fantasy writing and the superhero genre. His contemporaries, Warren Ellis and Grant Morrison have their own opinions on the superhero genre also. Although their stories are very much fantasy and have subject matter about superheroes, their tonally dark stories and further exploration of more adult themes is antithetical to what we see in most manga aimed at young boys. We continue our journey to post WW2 Japan, with the more obscure, but equally important manga master - Yoshiro Tatsumi (credited as being the creator of the darker, more realistic "Gekiga" movement in manga). We read THREE short story collections that reflect Tatsumi's delightfully (?) tortured ethos of the time: "The Push Man" (1969), "Abandon The Old In Tokyo" (1970 - also a great name for a band), and "Good-Bye" (1971-1972). Tatsumi’s depiction of Tokyo largely takes place amid the garbage-strewn alleys of 1960s Tokyo, where silent, sexual repressed men try and often fail to reconcile their unquenchable lust for women or companionship with basic human dignity. It’s an economic boomtime for Japan, as the company is in the midst of an insane Renaissance following its post-war devastation. But it’s very much a Renaissance of haves and have-nots, and Tatsumi’s stories tend to follow the men who are very much have-nots, and know it.

# “Disseny racional”. # “Geometria organica”. # “Retorica del espai”. # “Arquitectura liquida”. Con esta canción nos despedimos por hoy. For the month of May, Shea and Derek discuss two books that, at first glance, seem quite different, but whose similarities become more apparent upon closer examination. They begin with Masahiko Matsumoto's Cigarette Girl (Top Shelf Productions), a collection of eleven short comics originally published between 1972 and 1974. This is one of the few books by Matsumoto available in English -- another translation, The Man Next Door, was published by Breakdown Press in 2014 -- and the guys strongly advocate for more attention on this mangaka. Shea and Derek recall their earlier discussion of Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifting Life, where the figure of Matsumoto is central to Tatsumi's autobiographical narrative. The stories in Cigarette Girl demonstrate the artist's style storytelling, which he referred to as "komaga" (or "panel pictures" in English), with its emphasis on a cinema-influenced panel breakdown and a more adult subject matter. Along with this, all of the stories end ambiguously or "obscurely," without any neat resolution or closure, underscoring the mature and real-life tone found in Matsumoto's work. About all of the pieces in this collection have something to do with , complicated, compromised, or unrequited relationships, with Matsumoto writing from both male and female perspectives.  And it is this theme where Derek and Shea find the common ground with the other book they discuss this month, Riichi Ueshiba's Mysterious Girlfriend X, Vol. 1 (Vertical Comics). This story has everything to do with relationships, but, as the guys point out, it has perhaps the weirdest premise they've encountered on the manga series so far. The narrative's 17-year-old protagonist and focalizer, Akira Tsubaki, becomes addicted to his new love interest -- literally! -- after tasting some of her drool. He gets sick if he goes without a dose of her saliva every day or so. His drool-defined heartthrob, Mikoto Urabe, is a complete enigma, a mystery made all the more confounding by her hobby of scissor play. Urabe has an uncanny ability to cut quickly and precisely almost any material with her scissors, which she carries holster-like in her panties. In fact, it's the "panty part" of this book that receives much of the guys' attention. Shea and Derek aren't exactly sure what to make of Ueshiba's fascination with older teenage girls' bodies, or the fact that he finds certain "cute" acts so alluring. As the artist summarizes at the end of this first volume, "Don't you think a girl who drools when she falls asleep is cute? Well, this is a comic about that sort of girl." Still, the guys never suggest that Ueshiba is any sort of creepy pedophile, and, in fact, they even see the benefits of setting his particular story within a high school milieu. Be that as it may, Mysterious Girlfriend X has to be one of the most head-scratching stories Shea and Derek have encounter in some time, and, along with Cigarette Girl, provides them with much discussion fodder for this month's episode.

Manga - Reviews of School Judgment 1 and A Drifting Life

On the February manga show, Shea and Derek look at a new title and an older title. They begin with a discussion of School Judgment 1, recently released by VIZ Media. Written by Nobuaki Enoki and with art by Takeshi Obata -- perhaps best known for his work on Death Note -- this is the first book in a series that has a unique premise. In fact, the guys comment several times on the wacky setup of School Judgment: a legal arbitration system established in Japan's elementary schools, where the students themselves try criminal cases serving as judge, prosecution, and defense. In this first installment, the protagonists Abaku Inugami (for the defense) and Pine Hanzuki (prosecution) battle over three strange cases, with the book ending by setting up a fourth. Shea and Derek discuss the weirdness and the social pertinence of the storylines, including arbitration concerning both drug use and pedophilic voyeurism. After that, they look at at Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifting Life (Drawn & Quarterly). With an original English publication of 2009, this is Tatsumi's slightly veiled autobiography and a look at his growth as a manga artist. In fact, Derek points out that the book can best be read as a künstlerroman, a narrative about an artist's growth to personal and creative maturity. This is a hefty book of over 830 pages, a marked difference from the kind of short-form manga that Tatsumi is best known for. Indeed, both Shea and Derek contrast reading A Drifting Life to their experiences with his short-story collections, such as The Push Man and Other Stories, Abandon the Old in Tokyo, Good-Bye, and Fallen Worlds (also published in English by Drawn & Quarterly). While the shorter slice-of-life narratives are clear examples of gekiga, an alternative manga form advocated by Tatsumi himself, this autobiographical work is more conventional. And being a retrospective look back at his early life, Tatsumi brings into his story the real-life artists that inspired him and served as his companions and competitors, including Osamu Tezuka, Masahiko Matsumoto, Takao Saito, and Susumu Yamamori. As the guys conclude, this is an outstanding book and the perfect introduction to the world of Yoshihiro Tatsumi.
