In this special family-themed episode we're delighted to welcome sisters Sue Nickels and Pat Holly, renowned figures in the quilting community. Both have dedicated more than four decades to the art of quilting, earning numerous accolades and inspiring countless enthusiasts worldwide.Pat Holly was born in Lafayette, Indiana, during her father's tenure as a flight instructor in the Korean War. Though the family relocated to Michigan when she was just six weeks old, Pat proudly embraces her Hoosier roots. She pursued biology at the University of Michigan and later worked as an electron microscope technician at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital. It was there she met her husband, a pathology resident. Following their marriage, Pat returned to the University of Michigan School of Art to study graphic design, weaving, and fabric design. Her fascination with textile creation and historical textiles from around the world continues to influence her quilting designs. Sue Nickels was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and spent most of her life in Ann Arbor. She attended Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Art. Sue married in 1976 and welcomed her first daughter in 1978. Inspired by her sister Pat's baby quilt gift, Sue embarked on her quilting journey by enrolling in a class at a local quilt shop, where only hand techniques were taught at the time. Over the years, she transitioned to machine quilting and has been teaching machine techniques for more than 30 years. Sue's dedication to quilting has earned her numerous awards, including the 1998 AQS Best of Show for "The Beatles Quilt," a collaboration with Pat.Beyond their collaborative projects, Sue and Pat have contributed significantly to the quilting community through teaching, writing, and sharing their expertise. Sue has authored several books and has developed her own rulers for machine quilting. Pat's work reflects her deep appreciation for historical textiles and her background in graphic design and weaving. (3:10) How did Pat and Sue learn to sew? Their mother of course! Hear the story of the genesis of their sewing/quilting careers. Were they good at sharing their only sewing machine? Hear about that right here! Oh, learn about the Troll doll cloths too!(6:00) What inspired each of them to transition from being sewists to quilters? Their grandmother and a special baby quilt!(9:14) Learn about the influences of Illinois Quilters Inc. and Jinny Beyer, Ruth McDowell, Harriet Hargrave and Gwen Marston.(11:27) Sue, learned to quilt from Harriet Hargrave's book “Heirloom Machine Quilting” with the help of Pat who had taken a workshop form Harriet in the Chicago area. This was in 1987 and other quilters in your area had not discovered machine quilting. Was it hard to make the transition to machine quilting?(15:43) Both Pat and Sue talk about the influence of Gwen Marston and the Beaver Island Quilt Retreat.(18:40)In the late 80”s Pat moved to Muskegon, MI and began the PALS (Patchers at the Lakeshore) Quilt Guild. Here she talks about this move and the genesis of this endearing group of quilters.(20:09) The sisters talk about what it's like to collaborate on their work…and what it's like to win awards together.(23:42) What moment or event stands out for Pat and Sue? Well…there are many and then there's the Beatles Quilt. And for Pat it was her miniature quilts.(26:53) Learn more about the Beatles Quilt of 1998 Best of Show. Jazzer would far rather go to that, but Tracy refuses to change their dinner date to let him do both. Brad then tells jealous Jazzer he'll fast before the competition to make sure he beats Zainab. The prize is as good as his.Akram fills Azra in on how Adil is doing in Pakistan, then outlines some ideas to get his business up and running. They share happy memories of biking together, before Azra shocks him with news about Zainab wanting to work in a pub. Later, they consider the idea of moving back to Solihull, amongst old friends. Azra confesses that, despite the sewage spill, they feel settled in Ambridge. She thinks Akram might grow to like it there too. Despite Emma's best efforts the Tearoom has been dead all day. Both Pat and Emma hope Natasha's punt on getting customers back with the pancake competition works. Pat's frustrated that not many people have signed her petition about the sewage overspill. Emma suggests drumming up a bigger response with a media blitz. Later, Emma shows Pat the work she's been doing online to publicise the petition, using photos of damage at Bridge Farm and adding links to the Borsetshire Clean Water Action Group. Even better, Emma then gets an invite for an interview on Radio Borsetshire – at last, an opportunity for their voices to be heard!

In this podcast, Expert Witness Challenges in Healthcare Cases, Arlene Klepatsky, a legal nurse consultant and nurse attorney, who teaches legal nurse consultation, answers some of the most critical ethical and practical questions for LNCs. She goes into depth about Rule 26 disclosure, a federal rule that states may also have. It means you'll be disclosed as an expert and will have to provide certain documentation. To fulfill the requirements, you must submit a list of cases, whether depositions or trials, in which you have participated in the last 48 months. Both Pat and Arlene emphasize the importance of an updated list. Many LNCs worry about needing to withdraw from cases. Arlene details the circumstances under which you can legitimately draw. One of these is a conflict of interest. Sometimes, the conflict doesn't emerge until you're already officially a witness, as in the merging of a hospital where you work with one named in the case. Withdrawing from a case creates a costly and time-sensitive situation for the attorney, and it's best to discuss the situation with him. You must also anticipate that he or she will expect reimbursement for payment given to you. This may depend on the circumstances. Be sure to review and save this information-packed podcast on Expert Witness Challenges in Healthcare Cases by the highly experienced LNC, Arlene Klepatsky. Why is it so important to ask the attorney for whom you're working any questions you have? What's the value of keeping an ongoing, updated list of cases in which you've testified at an exposition or trial? How does it take a case so long to move through the judicial system? Under what circumstances can you withdraw from a case? How can you best handle conflicts of interest? If you have a sore throat you're not alone.  All of this smokey air is causing cold and in some cases flu-like symptoms.  Cody is trying to get over the flu anyway so this is not helping BUT these things are so minor compared to what over 52,000 evacuees from the Camp Fire are going through.  So many great ideas came rolling in this morninig on ways to help.  Our favorite came from Caren in Roseville. Both Pat and Tom are taking her idea and acting on it.  We hope you can to!

Did you have a lot of trick or treaters?  Jackie in East Sac said she had 2,000!!  How do you even buy for that many?  Both Pat and Tom had very few BUT they've come up with an idea on how to fix it.  Three little trick or treaters that hit Pat's house were amazed at getting full sized candy bars and one of them, a 3 year old, had a great take.  Orangevale's Devin Dawson is doing a really cool thing to help education in music and if you're gonna throw a beer during a parade make sure it doesn't hit anything....like a priceless trophy!

We may not have won the .lottery but we did receive some good karma!! At least it looks that way....what do you think?  Halloween is a week from tonight: would you buy a house that you liked if you knew it was haunted?   In today's Good Stuff, a six year old boy in Phoenix has a birthday party.  His mom invited 40 people.  No one came.  The picture of this cute little guy at a big table all by himself surrounded by pizzas, a big cake and a lot of empty chairs is heartbreaking.  It does have a good ending.  The Phoenix Suns (basketball) is putting six year old Teddy and his family courtside for tonight's game. Teddy will also get to meet and hang out with the players ahead of time.  And since tonight's game is against the Lakers maybe he'll meet LeBron?!  And finally, onre more thought about the lottery.  The winning ticket was sold in South Carolina where you have the right no matter how much you win to stay anonymous.  If you won and if you could, would you stay anonymous?  Both Pat and Tom say yes, but Cody says no.  Find out the many great reasons she has for wanting to make it as public as possible.

Pat & Tom In The Morning on New Country 105.1 KNCI Podcast

Both Pat and Tom try to shake off opening season losses by their teams....49ers for Pat, Seahawks for Tom.  Cody's was ahead of us because she's and Eagles fan!   The Goot Stuff spotlights a high school senior by the name of Kaylee Foster who was her high school's homecoming queen.  She also kicked 2 field goals and the game winning extra point in her football team's game.   There was another mountain lion sighting by where Pat lives (so much for the bike trail!).  And we're sure you've had facebook friend requests from co-workers.  How did you handle them?

SPENCER HAMILTON and PAT NIDAY bring their music picks and songbird pipes to the PopFury podcast! The risk-averse duo chat about company cover bands, getting grilled by your gal’s pals, Pat almost drowning, Spencer’s awesome high school playlist and, naturally, peeing in weird places. SHOW NOTES 0:00 Intro 1:10 Pat sang at his company’s holiday party. In unrelated news, he received a promotion. (You can listen to Pat’s audition tape at the end of the podcast!) “I had to audition to be in my company-sanctioned cover band for a holiday party...” 6:45 Pat went to a second holiday party where he got grilled by one of his girlfriend’s pals. We discuss being in--and putting someone else in--the hot seat. 12:40 Spencer just turn 28. Sammy thinks he looks very mature for his age. Spencer once took Pat to a wrestling show. 18:00 Spencer is bad at budgeting his time. Pat and Spencer work through their feelings about the Chipmunks. “So, I’m pinned here and I was like, OK, that’s how I die.” 21:00 A racehorse was doped up on meth. Both Pat and Spencer are risk averse. Pat almost drowned until a girl saved him. Spencer really doesn’t do risky things because catching alligators doesn’t count as risky. 27:15 Pat hates the idea of dinosaurs having feathers. Pat is a forgiving person. Spencer? Not so much. Sammy wonders if this reflected in their personal relationships. 33:00 Pat sang Rihanna with his Uber driver. “That’s ‘Seven Nation Army’ -- which we can all agree is the best song ever written” 35:20 Sammy plays songs from Spencer’s awesome high school Spotify playlist.  45:00 Pat wants to fix the White Elephant gift exchange. Sammy hates the idea of a donation to charity as a gift to someone. 48:35 The NFL Pro Bowl will be adding dodgeball to the event. Pat is the nerd kid who disappointed his jock dad. All of us rebelled by peeing in weird places. 56:10 Outro 58:00 BONUS: Pat’s audition recording of  Billy Joel's “Only the Good Young” Thanks for listening!
