What do you get when you mix a multi-passionate person with a bit of boredom? Coach, speaker, and businesswoman Jill Salzman. The founder of Founding Moms likes a challenge: “Can I make money from something that sounds nuts?” Jill shares with Jeanne why trusting yourself is important; why telling everyone your mistakes helps you grow; why slowing down can reap multi-faceted rewards; how she ended up starting, growing, and selling three seemingly unrelated businesses; and why you don't always need an “expert” for your business. Jill Salzman turns the mundane into inspiration and transforms the impossible into the achievable. Through defying expectations and breaking the rules, she succeeds in inspiring entrepreneurs to figure out what works for them by using meaningful action to create positive results. Jill is the author of The Best Business Book In The World* (*According To My Mom) and the Amazon best-seller, Found It: A Field Guide for Mom Entrepreneurs. She's shared the speaker stage with Richard Branson, Sheryl Sandberg, Daymond John, Marilu Henner, and Desmond Tutu among others, and professed her love of Eddie Vedder in her TEDx talk on 11/11/11. She hosted the top-rated entertaining business podcasts, Breaking Down Your Business, and then Why Are We Shouting?, a question she asks herself daily.CNNMoney called her a “mogul.” MSN Live said she's a “Cool Entrepreneur We Love.” Forbes rated her a Top 100 Champion Small Business Influencer and voted her third business, The Founding Moms, one of the Top 10 Websites For Entrepreneurs. When she's not speaking to audiences in patterned leggings or podcasting from her basement, she fruitlessly tries to convince her daughters that cassette tapes actually existed.Website: https://jillsalzman.comLinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/jillll

When it comes to marketing, we’re often so focused on the individual aspects that we overlook how all the pieces fit together to create a memorable customer experience. By focusing on the whole customer experience, we can create joy, build loyalty, get repeat business, and build a strong connection with people. Everything we do in marketing should be about showing value to our customers, and being authentic and personable so that they genuinely get to know, like, and trust us. Why is email marketing so important in business right now? What parts of the customer journey can we change and improve? In today’s episode, I’m joined by sought-after speaker, author, entrepreneur, and the founder of The Founding Moms, Jill Salzman. She talks about the most important marketing elements business owners often ignore. Three Things You’ll Learn In This Episode Why authenticity and vulnerability set us apart The foundation of marketing in 2021 is a personal relationship and connection. People want authenticity and realness from the people they do business with. If we want them to hire us, they have to be able to know, like, and trust us. This happens when we’re personable, engaging, and true to ourselves on social media. The power of email Don’t underestimate the power of email and nurturing your mailing list. Email marketing has the power to change a lot of businesses. If we dial in the content, the frequency of our emails, and our efforts to grow the list, we can deepen our customer relationships. How to gain insight into your customer’s journeyMany entrepreneurs don’t know their customers well enough or their customer’s personal journey, which keeps them from growing their business. Take yourself through your own customer experience from the first interaction to the final sale. It’s the only way to see if there’s anything missing or something we have to improve on. Guest Bio- Jill Salzman is a sought-after speaker, author, the founder of The Founding Moms, the world’s first and only global collective of offline masterminds and online resources for mom entrepreneurs. A graduate of Brown University and law school after that, she started Paperwork Media, a music management firm, and her first entrepreneurial venture. (Her parents still wonder why she opted for the music business over the seductive and alluring career of a bankruptcy attorney.) She went on to create The Bumble Brand LLC to sell Bumble Bells, audible ankle wear for the newest of human beings (she sold it in 2011.) Having built two successful companies, she launched The Founding Moms to connect mom entrepreneurs around the globe with one another and help them get down to business. Jill has been featured in national media outlets including the New York Times, CNN’s Headline News, People Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, Daily Candy Kids, Business Matters, WGN TV, and WAHM Talk Radio. Her TED talk, Why Moms Make The Best Entrepreneurs, received rave reviews. She was named one of the Top 50 Women To Watch In Tech and a Top 100 Champion Small Business Influencer. We talk about how you can become a badass founding mom and chat about what it takes to be a mom entrepreneur. Badass Founding Moms Episode Highlights: Systemizing makes everything feel less crazy. Two universal truths about moms: 1. Moms carry guilt about being a working mom and having a kid; and 2. they all carry fear that they will fail. No entrepreneur has it all and knows all of what she’s doing. If you think you understand your target market you don’t. You can’t assume anything about anyone. You have to survey, survey, survey; ask, ask, ask. Use your intuition. Don’t let data fuel your fears. Do the thing you want to do. Dive right in. Don’t let anything be the hurdle to you trying it. Ask people. The worst you could hear is no, which is also helpful. Jill Salzman Jill Salzman is currently growing her third entrepreneurial venture, The Founding Moms, where she helps mom entrepreneurs build better businesses. A graduate of Brown University and law school, she started a music management firm and then launched and sold a baby jewelry company before creating her current venture. She’s the author of The Best Business Book In The World and the best-seller, Found It: A Field Guide for Mom Entrepreneurs. Jill is a co-host of Inc. Magazine’s top-rated entertaining business podcast, Breaking Down Your Business, gave her own TED talk on 11/11/11, was dubbed a “mommy mogul” by CNNMoney, a “ Cool Mom Entrepreneur We Love” by MSN Live, and she was recently named one of the Top 50 Women to Watch In Tech as well as a Top 100 Champion Small Business Influencer after Forbes’ named The Founding Moms one of the Top 10 Websites For Entrepreneurs. On today's episode, I interview Jill Salzman, founder of The Founding Moms, where she helps mom entrepreneurs build better businesses. She's a two-time author, co-host of Inc. Magazine’s top-rated entertaining business podcast, Breaking Down Your Business, TED speaker, and serial entrepreneur. We discuss how to take a topic you speak and write about and turn it into a scalable business that is bigger than you. I also discuss how I've done the same thing with my business, Speaker Sisterhood. We go over how we came to the conclusion that what we were talking about could be more than a speech, how we discovered our business models, how we got started, what we've learned about licensing (the good, bad and ugly), and advice for others wanting to start a scalable business. What’s In This Episode: "How much does it cost to work with you?" is a question Brad hears a lot. Jill and Brad discuss this and why you can't have just one price (and what to do instead) on this episode. "I bought a book for $200." - Brad Brad discusses a mysterious book which he purchased for $200. Think that's crazy? Because of it, he made $60K. Is it still crazy, or a great investment? When you give people price options, you'd be surprised at how many will choose the highest option because of the value they get from it. Listening and understanding what the customer needs allows you to create options that actually work for them. And when you create a connection with your customers, it pays off in the long run. "You are taking the time to learn me, to get to know me." - Jill Do you have questions about pricing or do you think Brad is insane? Let us know! Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Netblaze, LLC. What’s In This Episode: Jill is hiring! What's your top-notch process for hiring the best people? Jill and Brad talk about how to hire the best people (and why it's hard) in this episode. "Good hiring is hard. Bad hiring is easy." - Brad The Founding Moms is looking for a Host Director to facilitate all the host meetings and coordinate all the offline community. Jill knows what a successful person in this role would look like, but may need some help in setting up the systems for the position. They talk about ways to make the hiring process easier, including casting a wider net of applicants, asking the same questions, and tips for screening your interviewees. What’s In This Episode: Does public speaking terrify you? Jill learned to speak in public thanks to the Wizard of Oz. But she's relatively comfortable in front of a crowd. Brad was in speech and debate in high school and had a lot of practice. It's important to remember that professionals don't "wing it" even though it looks like that. When someone's good at speaking, it's because they've practiced like crazy. "If you're not scared, you're not taking it seriously. The stakes aren't high enough." - Brad Stylist Suze Solari helps people change the world one outfit at a time. She helps people evaluate what pieces of clothing actually serve them. She has a speaking opportunity and wants to maximize it, but needs a better call-to-action to get people to sign up for her newsletter. Jill and Brad advise her to think about her ideal client and the benefit they'll get and the CTA will write itself. "I practice a lot with the audience in mind." - Jill How do you feel about public speaking? Do you have any tips? Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Netblaze, LLC. What’s In This Episode: Why do you subscribe to an email list? What makes you stay? Jill and Brad let you in on a little secret to a highly engaged email list. "I don't love email, but I enjoy really good email lists." - Jill Recommendations are HUGE when it comes to subscribing to an email list, and Jill will often sign up if she's heard a particular email list is awesome. Of course, sometimes she subscribes because of the freebie she'll get by doing so (with plans to unsubscribe later). Brad might hear someone on a podcast and want to know more so he'll subscribe to hear more from that person. But then, why stay? There are so many emails out there that are bad, that if they're actually good, it's GREAT. Jill says she looks forward to the content and she learns from them - how to write better herself. (Check out Betches.) "Know your audience really well." - Brad Brad's a fan of Verne Harnish because he curates a really good list of resources and respects people's time. He thinks the personal connection is important. When Jill decided to write a daily newsletter, she was terrified. She was worried everyone would unsubscribe (they didn't). By doing so, she learned what worked. And people respond way more now than they did when she was sending out an email every two weeks. What email lists are your favorite and why? Let us know! Jill Salzman, creator of The Founding Moms, joins us to discuss global networking and the inception of the world's first and only online and offline meet-up and resource network for mothers. Real Women Making a Difference When asked why membership community building is so important, Jill replies that it's a matter of identifying the need in a community and attempting to fill it. While Founding Moms' meetings began in person with just a few participants, the demand was so great that Jill has expanded to both offline and online group meetings, providing the opportunity for participants to pool resources, network, and offer advice as they build their businesses. As the creator of the only networking community that invites members to bring their children as they learn more about optimizing their business, Jill has built an accessible, loved, and trusted brand.
