Hola Mix(ed)tape listeners! Today we'll be listening to El Negro Bembón, interpreted by Ismael Rivera. In this song el gran Maelo describes the murder of a black man with thick lips for the simple fact that he's black and has thick lips. While the lyrics question the motive for the murder, the song distracts unsuspected listeners who stand on the edge between oppressing anti-blackness and the up-beat tempo of salsa music. Were we listening?   We hope this track helps to add value to your listening and awareness in your dancing!Find all of our Were You Listening? episodes here. For more info and resources check our website  here and our YouTube channel here.Contact us at: themixedtapepodcast@gmail.comIf you like the music we use check our playlists here.Host/Director of Series: Andrés Hincapié, PhDOriginal Episode Script: Melissa Villodas, PhDSound Editor: Melissa Villodas, PhD

I know, it's been a while.... but believe, I just had some things to sort out. Today we'll be listening to Salsa & Choke by ChocQuibTown. While ChocQuibTown is a hip-hop band, in today's song they celebrate a different rhythm called Salsa Choke. The chorus of the song reveals a historical reference, Salsa and Choke are separate rhythms and are the main influences of Salsa Choke. The latter, choke, is closer to something like regueton. Both rhythms were common in the town of Tumaco, a southern town in the Pacific Coast of Colombia, whose population is estimated to be 85% Afro-Colombian as of 2023. The first fusions of salsa and choke that created salsa choke are said to have happened there in the mid 2000s.Were we listening?   We hope this track helps to add value to your listening and awareness in your dancing!Find all of our Were You Listening? episodes here. For more info and resources check our website  here and our YouTube channel here.Contact us at: themixedtapepodcast@gmail.comIf you like the music we use check our playlists here.Host/Director of Series: Andrés Hincapié, PhDSound Editor: Melissa Villodas, PhD

In Raza, Alexander poses a series of basic questions that shake us strongly due to their simplicity and veracity.

When an episode of QAF begins with a vigorous J*RK OFF and CYBER S*X fantasy sequence, you know this is going to be quite a conversation! TQ opens up about his complicated relationship with his father and how much he related to Brian's complex dynamic with his father. TQ and Andrew explore whether or not queer men have more complex father-son relationships than straight men. Do straight fathers have patriarchal expectations that complicate their relationship with their queer son? TQ says that these relationships often cause trauma that is explored in their new book "Godspeed Lovers." Then, TQ and Andrew delve into Emmett's cyber fantasies and whether the fantasy is sometimes more fulfilling than the real-life experience? Also, why isn't "Queer as Folk" a new Broadway play or musical? TQ and Andrew are ready to write it! Just to remind you all here's a brief description about the "Daddy Dearest (Sonny Boy)" episode: Michael decides to break up with Dr. David, who surprises Michael by asking him to move in with him; Lindsay and Melanie ask Brian to relinquish his parental rights to Gus; Emmett becomes addicted to cyber-s*x. Hosted by Christian Garcia (Host of That Ol' Gay Classic Cinema). Elizabeth Winder, the writer of "Marilyn in Manhattan," joins us again with her extensive Marilyn Monroe knowledge! The Broadway cast is rehearsing the musical number "Let's Be Bad" which explores the pain and anguish Marilyn went through when filming "Some Like It Hot." Elizabeth explains that this is one of many moments where Marilyn was faced with career difficulties. Like Marilyn, Elizabeth suffers from insomnia and this is what caused Marilyn to frequently need breaks and have trouble remembering lines. We all provide our artistic interpretation of the choreography in this number since Ivy is being pulled in different directions like a marionette. Then, Elizabeth explains the nuances between Marilyn and Arthur Miller's toxic relationship compared to that of her and Joe DiMaggio. We all express our frustration with Derek who is manipulating both Ivy and Karen for the sake of putting on an incredible show, or is he? And, why do we bring up Britney Spears? Just to remind you all here's a brief description about the "Let's Be Bad" episode: Karen puts her talents to use at a government party; Michael and Julia's drama increases; Eileen joins forces with Tom's assistant; Ivy thinks something is amiss in her relationship with Derek. Andrew asks Tom what happened when Symonds and Ellis theorized what it meant to be a "male homosexual"? Was anything lost because men who sexually desired other men could now be classified as a homosexual? Dr. Andrew Rimby's Dissertation, "The Pool of Narcissus: Walt Whitman's Homoerotic Poetics"

You can watch my presentation for FREE on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47SeHV2zouw&t=2s Thanks so much to an amazing dissertation committee! Drs. Susan Scheckel, Michael Tondre, Victoria Hesford, Karen Karbiener, and Nikos Panou! And yes, I officially became Dr. Andrew Rimby. Here's a description of my project: The deployment of the myth of Narcissus in mid- to late nineteenth century American literature allows for a homoerotic imaginary to be built around romantic and sexual relations between men at a time when homosexuality had not yet been medicalized or theorized in the US. In this dissertation, I trace the influence of the Narcissus myth primarily in the writings of Walt Whitman to explore how male homoerotic desire becomes a structuring principle of Whitman's poetics and his vision of American democracy. Whitman creates the foundation for how homoeroticism will poetically appear, in both American and British literature, in his 1855 and 1860 editions of Leaves of Grass. His early poem “Pictures” (before 1855) provides the blueprint for Whitman's experimentation with his vision of comradeship which becomes inextricably linked to his ideas on democracy and male same-sex desire. In “Pictures,” Whitman lays the poetic foundation for looking towards classical Athens as a means to represent homoeroticism in mid-19th-century America. Whitman turns to the novel A Few Days in Athens, by early-19th-century Scottish philosopher Frances Wright, for homoerotic ancient Greek creative inspiration. The queer influence of this novel, largely overlooked by Whitman scholars, shapes Whitman's homoerotic poetics, especially how he links democracy to comradeship. I open my study with the meeting, in Camden, New Jersey, between Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde because Whitman and Wilde's contrasting views on the emerging category of homosexuality illustrate its uneven development in a transatlantic context. The study concludes by examining how queer male nineteenth-century readers of Whitman's poetry recognized that his homoerotic poetics speak to their own desire. The differences between American and British responses to Whitman's poetry will illuminate how American and British theorizations on male same-sex desire appear before the invention of homosexuality as a sexual orientation. Exploring why Whitman turns to ancient Greek mythology for his homoerotic poetics contributes significantly to Whitman scholarship and queer reception theory. El Negrito del Batey (The Black Man from the Batey) composed by Hector J. Díaz and Medardo Guzmán, in the voice of Alberto Beltrán with La Sonora Matancera, is a signature merengue song that many people in Latin America easily recognize. The song presents us with an intoxicating combination of rhythm and lyrics, which appear to walk right into the trap of stereotyping black people only to later throw the stereotype out of the window. It is hence perfect for our Were You Listening series for its subtle and not so subtle message. Were we listening? This episode accompanies the Yo Soy Merengue episode of the second season of our podcast. Caribe Soy (I'm Caribbean) by Ramón Torres is a great fit to accompany our Señora Bachata Mix(ed)tape Podcast episode because, among the many bachata songs expressing some version of national pride, Caribe Soy is one of the only ones that uses the formula of national or regional pride while also explicitly recognizing the African roots of the region and the inequalities across racial lines. In spite of the fact that Ramón Torres was not able to acquire many years of education given his poor upbringing, he is one of the few bachateros who go beyond lyrics of love and heartbreak introducing in his lyrics reflections addressing social issues. Caribe Soy is a prime example of this approach because it does not blindly buy into the miscegenation myth. Instead, the song recognizes the hardship of the African and native peoples, breaking the romanticized notion of an ideal, somehow superior mix. Were we listening? In this episode we hear from host Andrés Hincapié and from two Afro-Dominican guests: dancer and instructor Noeli Nathalie Rubio Reynoso and Spanish interpreter and local bachatero Antonio “Chaggy” Feliz Gómez. For more info and resources check our website  here and our YouTube channel here.If you like the music we use check our playlists here.Host/Director of Series: Andrés Hincapié, PhDProducer: Melissa Villodas, PhD CandidateGraphic Content Creator: Susan Mykalcio

In Las Caras Lindas De Mi Gente Negra (The Beautiful Faces Of My Black People) Ismael Rivera interprets Tite Curet Alonso's ode of love to black people, masterfully injecting his brilliant soneo.  The main two ingredients in Tite Curet’s ode are the obvious, intrinsic joy and beauty of black people, and the sorrow that has accompanied blackness in the Americas. If you have listened to our previous WYL episodes you probably recognize a similar sorrow in songs like Raza or Canto das Três Raças."We are the molasses that laughs, the molasses that cries" writes Tite Curet Alonso. Molasses was a commodity traded for (and most likely produced by) enslaved Africans in the Americas during the Transatlantic Enslaved Trade. This is exactly why, when Maelo Rivera sings of molasses as the materialization of Blackness in the Americas, the duality of joy and sorrow is accentuated. We are, quite literally, the molasses that laughs and cries. Were we listening? In this episode we hear from host Andrés Hincapié and from guests and listeners Brandon Hampton (from Ritmos Negros Podcast), Lauren Wilmore, and Tyler Cobb. For more info and resources check our website  here.If you like the music we use check our playlists here.Host/Director of Series: Andrés Hincapié, PhDProducer: Melissa Villodas, PhD CandidateGraphic Content Creator: Susan Mykalcio

He is so kind, so smart, and so passionate about what he does. If you want to get to know a person who is living his dharma, Joseph is it.
