TRIGGER WARNING: SUICIDE DISCUSSION. On this episode Dan Hurd, AKA Lt. Dan joins me, and we talk a considerable amount about the sensitive topic of suicide so please be aware. Dan himself has attempted suicide several times and lucky for him, and all of us, he found the bicycle and it changed his life for the better. He had only been on a few rides when he decided to join a friend for a long ride. As we all do at times, as the miles ticked away, the complaining started and Dan's friend came back at Dan with some tough love and a phrase that stuck…one pedal at a time. The bicycle became Dan's new obsession and he went from just a guy on a bike to a cyclist who spent several years biking the lower 48 states….all 48 of them! His bicycle journey became a mission to promote suicide awareness and to talk suicide prevention to anyone that would listen. And from that a nonprofit was born called One Pedal at a Time Movement, or OPAATmovement.com which focuses on suicide prevention. Most days when he is out riding he has a huge sign on his bike that reads Make a Stranger Smile. The bicycle is where he finds his peace and in this episode you will learn how he helps others find their peace as well. Again, please be aware this episode talks a lot about the sensitive topic of suicide. https://ridewithdan.godaddysites.com/ https://opaatmovement.com/ Ryan Van Duzer Episode: https://soundcloud.com/murphology-podcast/episode-113-bike-adventurer-ryan-van-duzer-recaps-ragbrai-xlix Rum Runner Tour Episode: https://soundcloud.com/murphology-podcast/episode-146-riding-the-rum-runner-tour-to-key-west www.murphologypodcast.com www.patreon.com/murphology Email me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. En: On a beautiful spring day in Copenhagen, the sun shone down on the old cobblestone streets, and the sparkling canals mirrored the clear sky. People were out, having picnics in Kongens Have, sailing in the canals, and enjoying the blossoming trees. Amidst all this excitement was Lars. Lars havde aldrig prøvet at cykle før. En: Lars was a brave guy, tall and broad-shouldered in a suit and tie. But he had a hidden fear. Lars had never tried riding a bike before. Everywhere in his beloved city, people used their bikes as a natural part of everyday life. For Lars, this lack of ability was a source of shame. He decided it was time to change that. En: Lars found his new, shiny red bike in the heart of Nyhavn. He was nervous, trembling a bit. People around him stopped and started to see what was happening. With a deep breath, Lars put his foot on the pedal and pushed hard. And then, he started moving forward.Da: Og han faldt.En: And he fell. En: Lars wobbled, twisted and turned, flailing his arms and legs. Then, with a heavy thud, he landed on the hard cobblestones. People laughed. A little girl pointed and giggled. An older man nodded sympathetically. Nogle snorkede. Nogen opmuntrede ham. En: Lars got up, dusted himself off, and tried again. And again. And again. Each time, he fell. People started to gather. Some snickered. Some encouraged him. A group of students stopped by and began cheering him on.Da: Og Lars forsøgte igen. With a firm grasp on the handlebars, he pushed down on the pedal. He wobbled but maintained his balance, and then... he rode. A few steps. Then a few more. And finally, Lars rode down the street, laughing.Da: Folk klappede. Den lille pige hoppede og jublede. Den ældre mand tørrede en tåre væk.En: People clapped. The little girl jumped and cheered. The older man wiped away a tear. En: Lars stopped by the canal and looked out over the water. He had gotten started. He had ridden. He breathed a sigh of relief, feeling a sense of relief and joy. He knew he would fall again. But for now, for this moment, he was free. En: And with that, Lars hopped back on the bike and rode home. He was no longer afraid of falling. He now knew that the many falls were a part of learning, a part of the journey. He could finally be a part of his beloved city, his Copenhagen, in a whole new way. For the past three years, Hassan Abdus-Sabur has concluded a multi-hundred mile scholarship fundraising bike ride by riding onto the Howard University campus, exhausted and proud. In these moments when Hassan is surrounded by congratulations and applause, he can't help but flash back to his own time at the prestigious school over 30 years ago, cut unexpectedly short by lack of funds. Not finishing school is Hassan's only regret in life. The bike ride started when the niece of Hassan's former Howard classmate also got accepted there, and her family became concerned about the high tuition cost. Propelled by his own past experience, Hassan figured out a way to help, and the resulting impact was far bigger than he ever expected.

Daniel Hurd, or Lt. Dan, was in a dark place in 2017. Overweight, no money and no hope led him to try to end his life not once, but three times. Thankfully he was unsuccessful - and a persistent friend finally convinced him to ride a bike on which he learned to just take it “one pedal at a time.” In the five years since his last suicide attempt, he's ridden in all of the Lower 48 states, started a non-profit to help those who see no hope, and has conducted 100 suicide interventions.

I met him surfing through Iowa on RAGBRAI spreading smiles and I had to know his story. Lt. Dan has found a joy in life and works every day to put a smile on a strangers face. My hope is that our conversation puts a smile on your face, and the joy Dan found on a bike spreads and continues to spread!

At the height of the pandemic and increasing racial tensions in the United States, Chris McGarrell found himself in a dark place. With gyms and basketball courts closed, Chris would return from work, curl up on his couch, and immerse himself in the social injustices in the world playing out on social media. It was then that two events would change his life. As restrictions were lifting, Chris noticed one of his friends would cycle to the basketball courts. Around the same time, Chris bumped into another friend who was noticeably fit after he discovered cycling. Chris knew what he had to do. Chris made a pledge with a friend to purchase a bike to navigate the pandemic and started to share his experience as a cyclist on social media. The former captain of his High School football team pulled together a few friends to form a different kind of team and that's how ManDem Cycling Club was formed. In this episode, we discuss the commonalities between the running and cycling community and Chris shares the secret to the club's success or what he calls, the “sauce.” ManDem Cycling Club has been rapidly growing under Chris' leadership and what started out as a pledge between two friends is now a prospering community with a strong foundation built on respect, community, and altruism. Mad in America: Science, Psychiatry and Social Justice

In our second week of MIA Veterans & Military Families, we interview U.S. Navy Veteran Dan Hurd. Dan is the Founder of Ride With Dan USAand the One Pedal at a Time Movement. After surviving his third suicide attempt, Dan became inspired to bicycle to all 48 States in the continental U.S. to help raise awareness about suicide. Along his journey, Dan has realized his attempts were likely caused by the medications he had been prescribed and now dedicates his life towards inspiring others to live life “One Pedal at a Time”.  (audio to be added) We discuss:  How Dan survived a rough childhood and came to be prescribed psychoactive medications as a teenager. That Dan found his time in the U.S. Navy to be the best time of his life. How he came to found Ride with Dan USAand the One Pedal at a Time Movement. Why he is biking all 48 states in the continental U.S., with a path that includes 25,000 miles and a three-year ride to raise awareness about suicide and to call for research. How all three of his suicide attempts were during periods of medication withdrawal. How his first attempt occurred in high school, six months before entering the U.S. Navy. How, a year after discharge from the Navy, Dan began getting prescribed medications again. Dan now realizes that meds were the likely cause of his suicide attempts. Life stressors were triggers, but medication withdrawal manufactured his risk. How Dan experienced severe physical pain as part of withdrawal from psychoactive medications, which was especially pronounced during the first year of his ride across the country. How his physical pain from withdrawal was so intense that it nearly ended his trip within the first six months of his journey. Dan talks about his concerns that psychoactive meds might have harmed his mother, and that her being prescribed these medications prior to his birth might have impacted his life today. How he hadn’t previously connected meds to his negative life events, specifically social isolation. Dan has gone from complete isolation while on meds to exploring all 48 states on his bicycle now that he is off of the drugs. How Dan has come to recognize medications aren’t solving a chemical imbalance, but instead are medicating symptoms, which led to polypharmacy. How Dan’s journey and sharing his story with others has helped him in his recovery and in finding balance in life. Dan’s Message to listeners: "Take life one step and one pedal at a time. If you’re experiencing challenges, tell everybody what is going on. Don’t expect help, because when you expect it, you’ll be disappointed. It’s when you’re asking for help and not expecting it, you’ll be happily surprised at what happens." Jim Murphy is one of the most inspiring people I know.  We first met by coincidence when our paths crossed in the bicycle industry.  Since then, I've looked to Jim as a mentor, a ride buddy, and most importantly, as a great friend.  When he was diagnosed with cancer almost exactly 5 years ago, I was speechless that cancer had attacked my amazing friend.  He started a blog about his experience and I distinctly remember his impactful words saying to his readers, "Do not tell me 'I'm Sorry.' I'm not sorry."  His tenacity and passion for life were the key to how he dealt and beat esophageal cancer.  He refused to let the diagnosis dictate his future, and he insisted on continuing to ride his bike and ski as a Ski Patroller, even while undergoing chemo and radiation. He even rode his bike to the treatments.  But that's not all, Jim has lead an incredible life with a dynamite career.  He has been the National Director of Sales and also has held Vice President of Sales for massive companies like Snapple, Red Bull, FRS, and Promax. This episode is full of so much of Jim's wisdom and insight to his approach at life.  He even said that if he had died at age 51 of cancer, he felt like he had lived a fulfilled life.  There are so many great nuggets on how to lead a life with more purpose, his approach to fighting off cancer, his philosophy to growth and success including two key specific details on how has found success in business, and how giving back to his community brings him the most fulfillment of all. We also talk about how cycling specifically helped him in one of the most challenging times of his life and how important our attitude can be. Topics Discussed in the Podcast  the keys to moving up in business (and in life!) Jim's 2 key components to a high performance career his attitude about cancer he didn't think "why me?" or "what if" how he lived day to day with the treatments how cycling helped him stay positive Jim's experience counseling others with cancer the importance of support his experience doing Ski Patrol at the South Korea Winter Olympics his "un-retirement" what his second chance looks like    Listen Now Links Email Jim!
