Rabbi Nota Schiller zt"l, the great Rosh HaYeshiva of Ohr Somayach passed away last Shabbat. These are a few words in honor of his passing. In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band “Foreigner” (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home”. Other production work included “The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars”, “The Curves”, and “Nutz” as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O'Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. Seasons of the Moon, a unique fine-art black-and-white photography book combining poetry and Torah essays, has now sold out and is much sought as a collector's item fetching up to $250 for a mint copy. He is much in demand as an inspirational speaker both in Israel, Great Britain and the United States. He was Plenary Keynote Speaker at the Agudas Yisrael Convention, and Keynote Speaker at Project Inspire in 2018. Rabbi Sinclair lectures in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy at Ohr Somayach/Tannenbaum College of Judaic studies in Jerusalem and is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications Ohrnet and Torah Weekly. His articles have been published in The Jewish Observer, American Jewish Spirit, AJOP Newsletter, Zurich's Die Jüdische Zeitung, South African Jewish Report and many others. Rabbi Sinclair was born in London, and lives with his family in Jerusalem. He was educated at St. Anthony's Preparatory School in Hampstead, Clifton College, and Bristol University. IntroductionOne text that gets mentioned in conversations I have with fellow whiskey-drinkers is the responsum or responsa of Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. Commonly referred to as Rav Moshe, he was an important 20th century rabbi with a significant impact on the practices of Orthodox Jews, in general, and American Orthodox Jews, in particular. In a trilogy of three responsa, with questions posed to him by Rabbi Pinchas Teitz, Rav Moshe responds to him regarding the kashrut (kosher-ness) of blended whiskies that might have some wine in them. Primarily responding to his queries in one responsum, he also answers follow-up questions by Rabbi Teitz. In the 159th episode of The Jewish Drinking Show, Rabbi Dov Linzer guides us through the salient points of this trilogy (Iggeros Moshe, YD 62-64), primarily focussing on this first responsum (Iggeros Moshe YD 62).Biography of GuestRabbi Linzer is the President and Rosh HaYeshiva of YCT Rabbinical School. Having served as YCT's Rosh HaYeshiva for over 20 years, Rabbi Linzer became its President in 2019 and assumed both the institutional and Torah-based leadership of YCT. In his capacity as a mentor, Rabbi Linzer provides religious guidance to the yeshiva's students and the over 150 YCT-ordained rabbis who are serving in the field. An acclaimed Torah and halakha scholar, Rabbi Linzer has been a leading rabbinic voice in the Modern Orthodox community for over 25 years. He has published over 100 teshuvot (responsa) and scholarly Torah articles, and hosts a number of highly popular Torah podcasts, including Iggros Moshe: A to Z, the 42nd episode of which he discussed our episode's topic - blended whiskey in Rabbi Moshe Feinstein's teshuvot.  He is co-author, together with Abigail Pogrebin, of It Takes Two To Torah: An Orthodox Rabbi and Reform Journalist Discuss and Debate Their Way Through the Five Books of Moses and will soon be coming out with The Rosh Yeshiva Responds, a collection of his scholarly, halakhic teshuvot to the yeshiva's hundreds of rabbis in-the-field.Support the showThank you for listening! If you have any questions, suggestions, or more, feel free to reach out at Drew@JewishDrinking.coml'chaim!

Yahrtzeit Yomi #894!! טז טבת Rav Chaim Kreiswirth Rav of Antwerp רב חיים ב״ר אברהם יוסף גאב"ד אנטווערפען (1918 - 2001) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Today, 16 Teves, marks the 22nd Yahrtzeit of Rav Chaim Kreiswirth ZTL. Rav Kreiswirth was the longtime Rosh Av Beis Din in Antwerp, Belgium, and the founder and Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivas Merkaz HaTorah in Jerusalem. Already in his youth, Reb Chaim was renowned for his phenomenal brilliance, excellent character traits and geniality, and was dubbed the "Cracover Illui" at the young age of 15, in recognition of his prodigious powers of Talmudic analysis. Reb Chaim studied for many years in the famous Torah centers of Poland and Lithuania. Upon application to the Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva, he was tested by the Rosh HaYeshiva, Rav Meir Shapiro. Rav Shapiro was duly impressed by Reb Chaim's proficiency in all aspects of Torah. Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski as well as Rav Chanoch Henoch Eigis (both of Vilna) were very fond of him, and gave his sefer on Tractate Zevachim a warm approbation (the manuscript of which was lost during World War II). As accomplished as the Rav was in the realm of Torah Scholarship, so was he proficient in the realm of chessed and tzedakah, particularly as it pertained to the plight of young widows and orphans. Many hundreds across the globe, found tremendous financial support and relief, thanks to the untiring efforts of the ״אנטווערפען רב״ (as he was admiringly known). Rav Naftoli Jaeger Shlita, currently the famed Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivas Shaar Yoshuv in Far Rockaway, New York, would take note of the incredible genius of Rav Chaim; recalling how the latter would recite entire passages of the מהרשא's commentary by heart, word for word!! It is noteworthy that Rav Chaim zl was niftar on 16 Teves; just a few hours after 15 Teves - his 83rd birthday. יהי זכרו ברוך!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Beri a new-age Chasidic singer, composer, entertainer AND Rosh HaYeshiva (Yes, you read that right). He is a renowned “vocal powerhouse” and gained popularity soon after he began releasing his albums in 2007. However, the debut of his celebrated “Thank You Hashem” gripped the attention of Jewish music fans worldwide. Beri's music emanates fresh energy in soulful, creative singing. His unique style, inspired by mystical Chassidus, aims to motivate and elevate fans around the globe. Beri began his singing career at age nine. He sang alongside popular musical artists including MBD, Moshe Goldman, and Mendy Werdyger and later joined the Shira Choir. Beri names Shlomo Carlebach and MBD as his major musical influences and was immersed in their music throughout his childhood. Beri draws his musical inspiration from the teachings of R' Nachman of Breslev and enjoys exploring the Rebbe's views on the spirituality of music with Reb Lazer Brody, Reb Motta Frank and Reb Itche Mier Morgenstern of Jerusalem. A few years ago, Beri opened a yeshiva for boys who have been mistreated or misunderstood.  In this episode, Beri explores where he finds the soul in his songs, where he turns for inspiration and how he balances being a rebbi and a world-famous singer. The Kiruv movement, or the Baal Teshuva movement, or the movement of Jewish Outreach, is a curious postwar historical phenomenon. In the counter culture environment of the 1960's, many youth began searching for their Jewish identity and roots, and pioneers and eventually institutions began to fill the role of providing them. The Lubavitcher Rebbe, the Bostoner Rebbe, Reb Shlomo Carlebach, Rabbi Shlomo Freifeld, Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis, Rabbi Pinchos Stolper with NCSY, are just some of the many pioneers in the United States.  In Israel the movement gained more steam following the Yom Kippur War. Rav Reuven Elbaz, Rav Shlomo Wolbe and many others pioneered it there. Eventually American kiruv institutions were established in Israel such as Ohr Samayach and Rav Nota Schiller, Aish Hatorah and Rav Noach Weinberg, Diaspora Yeshiva and Rav Mordechai Goldstein and Dvar Yerushalayim with Rav Boruch Horowitz to name a few.   Sponsored by Ohr Somayach who is proud to announce a new series on the Ohr Somayach Podcast Network: “The History of the Baal Teshuva Movement” by Rabbi Nota Schiller, Founder and Rosh HaYeshiva of Ohr Somayach.
