In our latest flexidisc we look into the story behind Video Killed The Radio Star. The production, the instrumentation, the arrangement and the glasses. Who were The Camera Club? How did Tina Charles fit into the story? Who exactly was Dr. Bop? We heard this on the wireless back in '79. And we've been loving it ever since.

It also has a new one, from a challenger the dominant 1983 Largo team never saw. It's a voice from 2,000 miles away, a coach who expected maximum effort from his runners. The episode also takes a deeper look at just how good the Packers were, how that famous five-across photo came about, and how the returning Largo runners dealt with a new teammate. Everyone knows what the first video ever shown on MTV was.  It was, "Video Killed The Radio Star".  But, do you know what video was the first to air TWICE on MTV?  You do now.

Jonny Gould's Jewish State

This is my second sit-down interview with Trevor Horn and you'll hear why it's nothing like the first time. The previous one (episode 43) made an impression with Wikipedia's editors, who included Trevor's “I believe in Judaism, more than I believe in anything else” as a reference. On leaving last time, Trevor told me at the door, "no one ever asked me about that before". In this in-depth conversation about his life and career, Trevor talks about growing up as a post-war baby boomer in Hetton-le-Hole and how the family left the Durham village to secure their future in the more prosperous midlands (as my own family had done a generation before). We discuss Paul McCartney's constant reinvention as the key to longevity and his own determination to keep working. Then there's Rod and the magnificent orchestral album, his most recent production. Trevor also pays a touching tribute to his late wife, Jill Sinclair, “the first person who told me I was good. There's also a couple of Jewish jokes she used to tell him too. And we expand on his religious beliefs, how Shabbat is a “great idea” and reading the Torah illuminating. Trevor's been touring the US as Seal's musical director with support band, The Buggles, reuniting with his old friend, Geoff Downes. It was their number one hit, “Video Killed The Radio Star” which propelled him to fame before he became a producer on Jill's recommendation. There's a stem-by-stem analysis of the brilliant “whiz bang” noises of Owner of a Lonely Heart, The Art of Noise, ABC's band manifesto, the Belfast Child of The Simple Minds and why Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood sounds like the Hatikvah, Israel's national anthem! I had another hour of questions for Trevor, but I hope this gives you a snapshot of what a talented and modest man he is, and why I've been a fan since my teenage years. Dear Listener, this is Trevor Horn II. Jonny Gould's Jewish State is brought to you with Dangoor Education.

"The Dream of the Blue Turtles" von Sting Der Anfang in dieser Folge ist natürlich Chefsache. "This Life" von Curtis Stigers wurde erst 2022 veröffentlicht. Produced by Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius We are finally back with part 2 of our look at the Buggles and why Yes might have wanted them. For this, we've been listening to the first album from the duo, The Age Of Plastic, seeing if we can pick up some pointers. As usual, it was a revealing and enjoyable experience and quite topical as Trevor Horn's autobiography is being advertised across all of my social media at the moment. Let us know what you think of our views in the show notes for this week. Does the album sound dated in 2022?Is there more to it than just Video Killed The Radio Star?Is it obvious why Yes wanted Downes and Horn to join them? Take a listen to the episode and then let us know what you think below! https://youtu.be/KSDnzdL9uco Courtesy of Doug Curran Facebook has just changed how pages work which means that I've had to establish a new place for us to post and discuss Yes-related happenings. It's a new group entitled, rather creatively, YMP Discussion Group. For the moment it's open to anyone to join but I'll be adding rules and joining requirements when I have time. One of the advantages of the new format is that all members of the group have the same ability to post content, so it's a bit more egalitarian, or somesuch. Please do search for the group and join in. https://www.facebook.com/groups/3216603008606331/ If you haven't already done so, please sign up at tormatobook.com to the email newsletter. I've already shared 3 updates on the progress of the forthcoming book, TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE? (not the final title) complete with short extracts from some of the chapters. If you sign up now, for free, you can have access to the newsletters you've missed. It really helps to know people are looking forward to reading the culmination of my decades of Tormato obsession. Trevor Horn is arguably the greatest record producer in the history of pop. I interviewed him when I was teaching at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford in 2009. Trevor talks about making many of his hit records such as Video Killed The Radio Star, Slave to the Rhythm, Seal, The Pet Shop Boys, Frankie Goes To Hollywood/Relax, Faith Hill and many more.

Hardcore Humanism with Dr. Mike

This week we welcome singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist, Mod Sun to the Hardcore Humanism Podcast. Mod has a new solo album out called Internet Killed The Rockstar which can be preordered now and is set to release February 12, 2021.Now as a child of the 80’s, when I heard about Mod’s album, I immediately harkened back to my youth and watching the first video ever to appear on MTV - The Buggles song “Video Killed The Radio Star.” And what was so compelling about that song was that it was signaling to the world that there was a new era of how we think about and relate to music and our rock stars. Specifically, through the use of visual imagery and story-telling, musicians were now able to think of and present themselves in a more complex, multi-dimensional way. And this was another step in the ongoing evolution of how artists related to the world. And it was that same revolutionary spirit that drove the conversation Mod and I had, where he talked about how his own artistic path involves deconstructing and reconfiguring the definition of what it means to be a rock star. Specifically, Mod explained how the predominant definition of what it means to be a true “artist” was to push oneself – physically, emotionally – to the very edge in order to explore the outer limits of one’s creativity. As Mod points out, this lifestyle would often be done at the expense of one’s health and well-being, including drug use and working for days on end with little sleep. But Mod then went on to described expanding the concept of what it means to be a “rock star” to one where health and creativity are not at odds but are rather synergistic in building a sustainable and productive artistic career. Now at Hardcore Humanism, we try to apply the principles of humanistic psychology to help people find their purpose and work hard to achieve it. And one way of understanding Mod’s path is to consider it in the context of a theory of one of the founders of humanistic psychology – Albert Maslow. Maslow’s motivational theory called the “hierarchy of needs” often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid. From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the needs are: physiological (food and clothing), safety (job security), love and belonging needs (friendship), esteem, and self-actualization. Needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied before individuals can attend to needs higher up. Often, artists will bypass “safety” needs such as health and well-being in the pursuit of creativity. And consistent with Maslow’s theory, what Mod is saying is that for him, true self-actualization cannot be attained without first taking care of his safety needs through sobriety, sleep and exercise, as he simultaneously pursues his creative path. And just as there are many ways to be a rock star, there are many ways to be a spouse, parent, friend, family member, artist, entrepreneur, athlete or worker. Whatever your authentic path is, don’t let the expectations of others or the limits you may put on yourself dictate who you can be. *****Newsletter: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/GBmf0iU/HardcoreHumanismSignUpInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hardcorehumanism/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HardcoreHumanism/Twitter: https://twitter.com/hardcorhumanismLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hardcore-humanism/

Having a hit record is hard enough – try doing it twice!  Today’s special episode is filled with the stories behind the songs you know so well… from the artists that you don’t.  How did the real-life “Sharona” and “Jenny” feel about the songs written for them?  (Spoiler – one of them loved it. The other? Not so much.) Also - What group turned their failure as a bar band into a #1 hit?  And why did one group have to hide their identity before a radio station agreed to play their song? Plus, Ivan from Men Without Hats explains how getting thrown out of Ottawa discos inspired “The Safety Dance” and Marc Almond from Soft Cell talks about the surprising success of “Tainted Love”.  We’ve also got the stories behind “Video Killed The Radio Star”, “Shannon”, “I Can Help”, “Harden My Heart”, “What I Am”, plus the disco smashes “Knock On Wood” and “I Love The Night Life” (which both Christopher & Tom try to sing… and it’s not pretty).  And we end it all with One Hit Wonder Cool Song Facts!

Yappin' about all the songs that peaked in popularity on the American pop music charts in "This Week In The 80s" - Labor Day Weekend! "Video Killed The Radio Star" by the Buggles was the 1st video played on MTV, but... what was the 2nd??? Remembrances of when I toured my first radio station.. at age 6! My Dad's $h!tbox truck. The ZZ Top stiff that gets played more nowadays than ANY of their actual hits. Lame white yuppie soul! The song that ended Whitney Houston's incredible streak of seven consecutive #1 hits. The weakest of all the Hall & Oates hits. The real reason Keith Sweat sounded so WHINY. The 1st rap "feature" to hit the pop top 10. The project that c-blocked a Beastie Boys masterpiece. PLUS- I will finally tell my own "MTV Story" - the one I've been referring to since the series started... 12 months ago! Warning: It not for the faint of heart! By the end of this episode, I'll have talked about EVERY song to hit the American pop music charts in the 1980s. All 4,166 songs!!!! The 1st time this has even been done in podcast form. There's more to come... After I take a nap! Meantime... Go re-live the magic and re-listen to Episodes #1-#51. I dare ya! Thank you all for listening. Welcome to the next new episode of my podcast! In this episode, I turn my spotlight on composer Hans Zimmer and his music for the movies. Born in 1957, in Frankfurt, Germany, Zimmer's initial musical background was by way of pop music, most famously with the band The Buggles, who had a huge hit in 1979 with their perky tune "Video Killed The Radio Star".  Later, he shifted into writing ad jingles before notable British composer Stanley Myers brought him over as an apprentice. Soon, they were co-composing together on a number of film scores. Zimmer quickly graduated to his own solo composing career in 1988 with A WORLD APART, which very soon led to notable big hits such as RAIN MAN, DRIVING MISS DAISY, BACKDRAFT, CRIMSON TIDE, THE LION KING and more. I wanted to look at how Zimmer's unique blend of synths, pop, exotic instruments and traditional orchestral forces changed the soundscape of movie music, starting in the 90's and continuing through to today, as heard in such blockbusters as the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and DARK KNIGHT series, INCEPTION and DUNKIRK.
