PART 2 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. Pop Idol star Gareth Gates and former Labour politician-turned-TV star, Ed Balls drop by the Access All studio to chat to Emma Tracey about living with a stammer. More than 20 years after he shot to fame on Pop Idol in 2002 Gareth talks about the new musical he is penning which is all about stammering. He has an overt or exteriorised stammer which causes him to get stuck at the start of a word and repeat the initial letter. Former politician, Ed, didn't realise he had a stammer until he was already serving in Gordon Brown's government. He has a covert stammer and describes it as a “block” which means the right words don't always come. He reveals the impact it had on political life when his rivals used it to rock the public's confidence in him and the moment he knew he had to go public. Before ‘The X Factor' and ‘The Voice', there was ‘Pop Idol', the ITV behemoth that spawned Simon Fuller's global mega-hit ‘American Idol'.  Season One climaxed on 9th February, 2002, when Gareth Gates - a 17-year-old former head chorister - and Will Young - a politely-spoken 23-year-old alumnus of Wellington College - slugged it out for the title of Pop Idol champion. Britain was captivated as the public strove to choose their favourite cover version of an unreleased Westlife album track - with over 15 million people tuning in, and 8.7 million casting their votes via telephone. Will emerged as the winner, but perhaps the real winner was the format - which centred the Judges, particularly ‘Nasty' Simon Cowell, in a way that would inspire dozens of talent show successors. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly recall how producer Nigel Lythgoe ramped up the ‘battle' element of the competition with rosettes and battle buses; consider the homophobic coverage of Young's sexuality in the mainstream media; and reveal Rebecca's place in Pop Idol history…  Further Reading: • ‘And your new Pop Idol is... Welcome to the last episode of Series 8... but hold on tight! I'm so excited to bring you Christine's story…. I've admired Christine from afar for such a long time.   Christine Talbot always loved books as a child but she had no idea then that this love for storytelling would take her to be one of Yorkshire's most-loved journalists and presenters. Christine has worked in newspapers, the BBC and ITV. She's presented lifestyle shows, was a pioneer presenter on one of the first health and lifestyle digital channels and for twenty years she sat next to Duncan Wood most nights at 6pm for ITV's Calendar programme.  She's covered some of Yorkshire's biggest stories like the Hillsborough Inquiry. She's interviewed Prime Ministers and was the first person to interview  a young Gareth Gates. (I know!)   It would have been so easy for Christine to stay doing the job she'd loved, but deep-down she knew she had another Next Chapter in her. So she took a deep breath, left the job she loved and made the leap to see where it would take her.   Christine is now writing, presenting, supporting mid-life women (yay) and learning more about herself by the day. We speak about all different next chapters – her TV debut (which is the best TV debut story I've ever heard), what it was like when she had to tell her own story following a diagnosis, and how her first job in news was in her airing cupboard.   At a time when I think it's fair to say the media isn't always regarded in the most positive of lights – Christine, I believe, is one of the best journalists we have.   You can find out all about Christine and her next adventures at: https://www.christinetalbot.com/     And just in case you were wondering – you can find me and my books at www.elliebarkerwrites.com (I'd love it if you kept in touch) x

We dig in to some great stories of his career including times starting out with the likes of Clive Banks and Gary Crowley, to plugging for The Jam and The Style Council along with a lovely connection for the comeback single Into Tomorrow with Paul Weller Solo… We also chat about Live Aid and Do They Know It's Christmas with involvement from Paul. The Dad's have been on tour this week. It's not often they get out of the house, never mind out of town! You can tell how excited they are and they let us all know everything they got up to. Ever sat there and wondered what ever happened to....? Don't think of Gareth Gates, the VCR or Scooby Doo. Try thinking like one of the two Dad's and you'll be in there world at all those extremely important items. Only one way to find out what they think. This week's unpopular opinion took a drastic turn after Leon doesn't do his homework. The dad's get very philosophical which can't be good..... Thanks for all your feedback, love and questions to the Dad's. Follow the Dad's across all the social media platforms - you never know, you might like it!!

It takes a genuinely special kind of person to be able to work in a care home for elderly people. I feel that these people are fortified with some kind of inner-metal. I can say with 100% certainty that I lack this quality. Some people, with all the best intentions, think they may have this quality, so would therefore like to work in one of these care-homes to see if they have what it takes. Sarah Jane Tattersall is one of these people. She, like many millions of us, loved the TV show Scrubs and thought she wanted to be just like the loveable and caring, yet catastrophic lead-character JD. I'll give you one guess as to whether or not this career choice worked out......too late..the answer is no. You'll find out why in:EPISODE 17!We discuss our childhood obsessions this week; a slightly lighter topic than usual. The original line-up consists of Paul Marazzi, Christian Ingebrigtsen, Mark Read and Ben Adams. Ingebrigtsen is originally from Oslo, Norway, but the other members originate from London.Their debut single, "Be the First to Believe", entered the UK Singles Chart at number six in mid-1999. They achieved chart success in the UK and other parts of the world in the late 1990s and early 2000s, particularly Southeast Asia. In the UK, they scored two number ones and six other top 10 hits, seven of which were written by the band. Adding to this, they also won a BRIT Award for "British Breakthrough Act" in 2001. They were managed by band manager Tim Byrne, who also formed Steps.Marazzi left the band in 2002, citing personal reasons. The three remaining members subsequently decided to split due to exhaustion from being on the road for the best part of four years straight. In December 2009, Ingebrigtsen, Read and Adams reformed a1, without Marazzi, in Norway for a series of concerts at the Christiania Theatre in Oslo.[1] Since their comeback, they have released new singles as well as their fourth and fifth studio albums, Waiting for Daylight, in 2010, and Rediscovered, in 2012.In 2014, a1 appeared on the itv2 documentary The Big Reunion along with other bands such as Eternal, Damage, Girl Thing, 3T and a new band called 5th Story, made up of Dane Bowers (from Another Level), Gareth Gates, Kenzie (from Blazin' Squad), Kavana and Adam Rickitt. In 2017, Marazzi met his former bandmates in Newcastle, after the fifteen years of his absence and he will appear on their 20-year anniversary tour.

It's not every day that you get the opportunity to sit down with someone who is actually famous. I remember Will Young winning Pop Idol, beating Gareth Gates and then smashing the charts with Evergreen and Leave Right Now. I didn't know that when he reached the highest of highs, when he was famous, when he was rich, when he had a number one album and was winning Brit Awards - underneath it all, he was miserable. In his words; "Oh shit". A hilariously candid interview on his journey touching the extremities of fame, fortune and mental health. Thanks Will, enjoy guys! p.s check out Will's podcast with Chris Sweeney - Homo Sapiens.

"Talk About Pop Music!" What might Spence's beef be with Andy (no puns). This time we look at the cheesy end (no puns) of the pop spectrum which incorporates chat about Adam Rickett (remember him?), Gareth Gates (turns out we've forgotten him), Destiny's Child and the inspiration behind an old sketch found on a cassette tape (remember them?). We get there via Australian Boy Bands, Scandinavian Pop Groups and finally Right Said Fred which brings us bang up to date with a Taylor Swift reference. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soh/message

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the television star Simon Cowell. Simon Cowell is one of our most successful pop music moguls. He is the mastermind behind more than 100 number one songs in Britain and abroad and Westlife, whom he signed, holds the record for having seven consecutive number one songs in the UK. A lot of his early successes were gimmicky hits - singing wrestlers, the Power Rangers and Teletubbies - but it was first Robson and Jerome and then Westlife who brought him credibility. His tenacity and his ability to spot a seller were already legendary within the music world when he devised a format for a television show that would bring new talent to the fore. Pop Idol, American Idol and now The X Factor launched the careers of Will Young and Gareth Gates among others. They've made Simon Cowell a celebrity too. His shows play to the aspirations of the young, who believe fame and fortune can be theirs. But when their ambitions exceed their talent, he's there to tell them. He's reduced many contestants to tears and been threatened by others but, he says, he's only being cruel to be kind.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin Book: Hollywood Wives by Jackie Collins Luxury: A mirror
