In a short, special one-off episode of "One Thing to do in L.A. this Week," we take you to the site of what the L.A. Times called The Most Important Event in California History: Campo de Cahuenga, directly across the street from Universal Studios, which marks the spot that ended the fighting of the Mexican-American War! This is the spot that enabled California to become part of the United States, and it's right in our backyard. THIS is what you're going to do in L.A. this week.

In a contrast to yesterday's opening description from The High Window, today we get a sense of Marlowe's office ... and what that says about him and his business. Dead magazines, and a carpet that was just something on the floor. Podcast home: https://StoriesMeanBusiness.com/podcast
Going to Gacy: A Cross Country Journey to Shake the Devil's Hand, tells the story of a drive I made cross-country with a pen pal of John Wayne Gacy's, to visit the serial killer in prison in the weeks before his execution. I originally sold the piece -- my first feature -- to Details. I wrote a draft and faxed it to the editor - this was 1994 - who told me to read Griel Marcus's Dead Elvis and write another draft. I did, during the two weeks I was vacationing with my mother and four-year-old daughter. Every day when they went to the beach, I stayed in a cool back bedroom and taught myself how to write. Just before I faxed in the new draft, my editor decamped for Vogue. The new editor killed the story sight unseen.Gacy had at this point been executed, and I was left holding what I thought meant something, or at least meant something to me; that, were I able to sell it, it would get me where I wanted to go. I sent it to Playboy and received a nice (handwritten!) note from the editor but no sale. I sent it to Harper's and heard nothing. It is crude if also accurate to say I felt as though I were hauling the story around like a corpse. Anne Thompson, then film critic for the LA Weekly and a fellow mom at my daughter's preschool, said, "Let me get it to someone at the Weekly." The Weekly wanted it. I went to their offices to copy edit, sitting at a stool by the editor's feet, knowing nothing about how editing worked, so that when he said, "We'll put a drop cap here," I asked, what's a drop cap? I did not have the courage to ask whether the story would be on the cover. The morning the paper published, I was waiting at the newsstand on the corner of Hollywood and Cahuenga. A pile of Weeklies was tossed off a truck. My story was on the cover. I grabbed four copies, went into the alley alongside the newsstand, and screamed.Anyone who wanted to read the piece after that time was out of luck. The Weekly was not online in 1994. Gacy had not left the public imagination, and had granted few interviews at length. In 2014, I was glad for the opportunity to add an introduction and see the piece published digitally, under the new title, Destination Gacy. As for getting me where I wanted to go, I wrote for the Weekly until 2010, and have never stopped writing about sociopaths. It was strange fortune to have started with this story, which I read for you here.Destination Gacy on Amazon

Our wet winter was a good thing for our reservoirs, our groundwater supplies and our psyches.........but for Southern California beaches, not so much. The annual beach report card is out and all of that rain took a toll on both sand and surf. So pop open your SPF30 sunscreen....grab your shades and flip flops---cause we're headed to the beach to dive in and go In Depth. Tonight's THE night. When many Americans will actually start to focus on the 2020 presidential race. The first of two Democratic debates will kick start the presidential race and give 20 candidates--especially lesser known ones---to say HELLO to potential voters. And the key to losing weight might be a splash of hot sauce on your food. Unionized Southern California grocery workers may be bypassing the checkout counter as they head for the doors, having voted to authorize a strike. But there are many options out there for shoppers..raising the question...just how effective would a strike action be? We go In Depth. And the iconic Amoeba Records building on the corner of Cahuenga and Sunset is set for the wrecking ball. Is this the end of Amoeba? Stay tuned and find out. It's a party at Pump this week, especially if you're a gay mayor...or is it gay man? Definitely gay mayor. The drama from last week's confrontation at what is now confirmed to be Solar de Cahuenga continues as Schwartz refuses to pick a side in the battle between Team Katie (but really Team Stassi) and Team Jax. But will Schwartz fess up or deny, deny, deny the rumors Scheana and Jax are spreading about his Vegas hook ups? One thing's for sure...Scheana is team Schwartz, because she doesn't care about girl code -- she's a guy's girl.

TAG Interview with Don LuskFind all TAG Interviews on the TAG website at this link Happy 100th! Cartoon veteran Don Lusk (animator, story man, and director .. from Disney on Hyperion to Hanna-Barbera on Cahuenga) turns turns ten decades old today. To celebrate, we present you with the Don Lusk 100th birthday interview, which covers his career from Disney in 1933, to Hanna-Barbera in 1993. (Sixty years of work seems to be sufficient, wouldn't you say?) ... I spoke to Don on the big office speaker-phone in mid-October. He talked about his early days at Walt Disney Productions, his work on "Snow White" and "Pinocchio," about how he walked out with other Disney strikers in 1941, carrying a picket sign until his feet and bank account gave out and he was forced to find other work for eating money. He has no regrets about hitting the bricks, though it put a good-sized nick in his career at the Mouse House. (He'll be circling back on talking about his work on "Fantasia" and at Hanna-Barbera in Part III of the Interview.)
