The Paradox Eph 4:32 #Nightlight #RTTBROS The Paradox of Christian Kindness “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” - Ephesians 4:32 (KJV) Inscribed on the wall of a ministry to the broken, rejected untouchables in Calcutta India is this poem: Anyway Poem People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God; It was never between you and them anyway. In a world where kindness is often met with skepticism, and sincerity with cynicism, it can be challenging to live out the Christian call to love and forgiveness. Yet, the poem by Kent M. Keith, though not scriptural, resonates with the teachings of Christ in its encouragement to persevere in goodness, regardless of the world's response. As believers, we are called to a higher standard – one that mirrors the character of Christ. The poem echoes the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus taught us to love our enemies and do good without seeking reward (Matthew 5:44-46). This devotion is not about the immediate gratification of earthly approval but about the eternal perspective of pleasing God. The acts of kindness, honesty, and generosity mentioned in the poem are not means to an end but are ends in themselves. They are expressions of a heart transformed by God's love, a testament to the work of the Holy Spirit within us. When we forgive, show kindness, and continue to build despite opposition, we are not just acting in defiance of human nature; we are living out the divine nature bestowed upon us through Christ. In the end, our journey is not about the accolades or the acknowledgments from those around us. It is about our relationship with God. As the poem concludes, it's between you and God – it was never between you and them anyway. This profound truth should liberate us to live boldly, love radically, and give generously, knowing that our reward is not in man's recognition but in God's affirmation. So let us take heart and be encouraged to “give the world the best we've got anyway,” for in doing so, we reflect the best of our Creator, who gave us His very best in Jesus Christ. This week our guest is artist and devotee Robert Ryan (who also known by his Sanskrit name Shivanesh) Robert is a renown tattoo artist at ‘Electric Tattoo' in Asbury Park New Jersey with over 25 years of experience. He's also an incredibly prolific Bhakti painter with a distinct style that finds its roots in American traditional tattoo art, that is uniquely blended with the Indian street painting style of Calcutta India known as Kalighat Painting. Robert is a highly disciplined spiritual practitioner, kirtan musician, and devoted disciple of his Guru. In this episode I'm absolutely thrilled for this opportunity to talk with Robert about his latest artistic manifestation the ‘Tantra Esoterica' Tarot Deck and Guidebook. Together we explore the universal nature of the Tarot, along with its deep symbolism and how to utilize this ancient technology to help guide and inspire us on our own quest for greatness, no matter where we are in our journey. We also talk about the creative muse that fully captivated Robert during this project and what it took to channel the 78 hand painted images for the deck and to publish a full guidebook with in-depth insights for each card within just a single year while also tattooing clients regularly. Amazing!!! Please enjoy and send Robert some love if you dig the conversation. Kathryn was born in the Himalayas. However, both her parents were English and had the same desire of "going out to India, spreading the Gospel message and serving the poor," explains my guest.Living in Vienna as a young girl, Kathryn remembers her parents taking in refugees who were seeking political asylum and it was normal to have refugees sleeping on their floor regularly. These memories had a profound effect on Kathryn and she was certain that this is how her interests in helping the less fortunate came to be. Kathryn shares that her mother was not warm and fuzzy but she was from the generation of tough and strong women. Kathryn always felt very loved. Ruby was a teacher and taught her daughter and other children from the Embassy. Ruby was determined that Kathryn would not be spoiled. Kathryn was soon sent to boarding school because her parents were working and traveling regularly."A little pencil in God's hand" is how Mother Teresa would refer to herself. She never wanted credit or accolades for her work. "She could be a tough cookie," Spink reflects however, "she was difficult to deal with sometimes, because God was so definitely on her side and that could make things tough. Mother Teresa was so determined, nothing could get in her way.""Poverty saddened Mother Teresa the most according to Kathryn, "I don't think it angered her not in relation to God. Waste most likely angered her the most but never with God."Mother Teresa was always seeing the presence of God in the poor and it helped her persevere. "Tolerance was deeply ingrained in Mother Theresa" explains Ms. Spink. "Mother Teresa believed that God was at work in every soul, so it wasn't up to her to try and convince others of the 'correct/best religion."My guest remarks "Mother Teresa used to say "come to Calcutta and I'll put you to work". This is what this demure but mighty woman believed with her whole body, mind and spirit.Kathryn even shared stories of the similarities between Mother Teresa, whose birth name was Agnes, and her mother Drana. "The family that prays together, stays together" was one of Drana's favorite expressions according to Spink. Caring for the sick was a common thread for the two woman. "It's not always about the physical suffering, but the whole process of being abandoned by people" was one of the toughest things for Mother Teresa to comes to terms with, comments Spink.Mother Teresa founded the order, "The Missionaries of Charities." She wanted to give shelter to abandoned babies and to help the poorest of the poor. In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize and after her death was canonized as Saint Teresa. I could have listened for hours to my guest share her stories of all of these selfless women.Mother Teresa was known as 'Mother' because when a nun/sister is appointed to a superior position within the church, they are known as 'Mother.'INFORMATION:Kathryn Spink is the author of several books on the work of Mother Teresa and her coworkers, as well as other inspiring contemporary figures, including Brother Roger of Taize, Beede Griffiths, Dominique LaPierre, Prince Charles' and Lady Diana Spencer and more. My guest is also the chronicler of the “South African Women's Human Rights Organization.” https://www.kathrynspink.com/https://www.harpercollins.com/blogs/authors/kathryn-spink-20167212026170

Sehmat Suri has spoken on stages in Dubai, London (U.K.), Halifax, Toronto, and Vancouver. She helped launch and scale Square Roots, an innovative social enterprise that is taking on the challenge of food waste and food insecurity. She took on the challenge of finding a partner to turn carrots destined for the landfill into a craft beer and even a beer for dogs. People laughed. The beer sold out in record time. You can also find Sehmat working part-time as a model where she combines her passion for fashion with her very long and beautiful hair (her instagram handle is semiwiththegoodhair so I guess I can get away with that comment). What makes this even more impressive is Sehamt achieved all this while completing a Double Major in Marketing and Psychology at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. She even managed to survive a co-op work term working remotely for me. Yes folks, Sehamt was employee number one for Screw the Naysayers. Sehmat’s journey to Canada is inspiring. Originally from Calcutta India, Sehmat chose Canada to pursue her University education. In this episode Sehmat talks about: the work she did with Square Roots, and other social enterprises as part of the Enactus chapter at her College. Enactus is a global organization working with college students in 38 countries around the world. The challenges she faced coming to a new country Why she decided to make Canada her permanent home Her thoughts on finding your purpose What it was like working for a crazy boss like me And lots more If you haven’t guessed, I’m a huge fan of Sehmat. She and so many other young people I’ve met through my podcast give me great hope for the future. Enjoy… You can reach Sehmat at: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/semiwiththegoodhair/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sehmatsuri/ Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Sharmistha Ganguly is a classical Hindustani vocalist. She is unique amongst singers of that style in that she is also an instrumentalist, playing the harmonium in the ensemble. Often what she plays on the harmonium follows the melody she is singing. In this episode we get a basic introduction into the classical Hindustani style of Northern India. The music heard in this episode was recorded live on March 16, 2019 at the Centennial Performing Arts Studios in Centennial Park Nashville Tennessee immediately before recording the interview. Sharmistha was accompanied by Anup Raychowdhury on tabla and Eric Fristch on sitar. Anup is an accomplished musician who learned tabla from his guru the late S. Ganguly in Calcutta India. He has dedicated his life to passing the torch to the next generation by teaching this remarkable art form. Eric currently studies sitar online with Pandit Mukesh Sharma in New Delhi. This music is always performed with a tanpura which does not play melody, but supports the melody of other instruments by providing a continuous drone.
We had the chance to spend 23 hours in Kolkata on a long layover from Hyderabad, India to Bangkok, Thailand, so we jumped on it. Based on a relationship that I had in the city, we set up a local guide who took us to a few authentic places that left us with a sense of how the people of Kolkata really live. We tested many of the excellent street food options including the chicken egg roll, puchkas, and bhapa doi. We road on the crowded train from the extremely busy Howrah Station. Visiting the College Street Coffee House is a must in Calcutta, so we made sure we sipped coffee in the busy upstairs hall. In and out of rickshaws, uber, and taxis, we saw the vibrant city and even had the chance to slow down for a shave with a street barber. We had a great time on our short visit in the former capital of India, please listen along on this fun episode of Passport Joy Travel Talk. Main Topics Covered: Kolkata (Calcutta) India Links Mentioned in the Episode: Check out all of the PARTNERS that have made our lives easy while traveling the world. Nikki’s first published book - Passport Joy - can be found on the Kindle store on Amazon. Laying over in a city can be a great way to see it. We did the same in Doha, Qatar as well as Copenhagen, Denmark. Our personal guide in Kolkata was Pratik Jio - reach out to him if you visit the city as well. Being able to visit the Ganges was a big deal to both of us. Puchkas or Pani puri, are very tasty street food that you will find everywhere around the city. Carrom is a game we found walking the streets. It’s basically hitting checkers with your hand into four corners like the game pool. Bhapa Doi is made by blending yogurt and condensed milk. It becomes more tasteful with the garnishing of almonds and pistachios. College Street Coffee House is the most famous of Indian Coffee House branches in Kolkata. The Chicken Egg Roll was one of the best street foods I have ever eaten. I love paratha so to have a burrito style snack with that tasty combination was heaven in my mouth. The Howrah Station is the busiest railway station in India. It can be intense at times. The streets of Kolkata were chaotic and energizing. Many forms of transportation were fighting for space on the tight roads. Sign up for our Newsletter to get the latest tips in Travel and hear about our weekly visits around the world

In this episode I talk to Brent Maxwell. Brent is a real estate broker who works exclusively with real estate investors. He also primarily focuses on properties in the City of Detroit. His clients include both local and foreign investors who have risk capital available to put to work in the city. He started in real estate investing eight years ago, after having his interest piqued in high school by a late night infomercial. REI News NO REI news this week in the podcast. My conversation with Brent went long so we skipped the news and went right into the interview. A Cash Flow Mercenary Rant I'll put my CFM hat on and tell you that I'm really tired of the calls and emails I'm getting about how hard it is to find motivated sellers here in Metro Detroit. I'm tired of it because I've been using the same source of leads for ten years. All of my wholesale deals came from this source. Half of my flips came from this source. And half of the houses in my rental portfolio came from this source. And this source is just as profitable and just as easy to use as it was when I started using it back in 2004. What's the source? Probates. If you're someone who's having trouble finding motivated sellers, then I highly encourage you to start chasing probates. And I also encourage you to use my educational program as your roadmap. It's $97 and it includes my six letter sequence and my excel tracking and follow up spreadsheet. In short - it includes everything you need to start chasing probates today. Check it out at Probate Real Estate 101. Current Business Brent is primarily wholesaling properties in Detroit to investors and individuals who are looking to buy and hold properties in the City. How He Got Started in REI Brent started out trying to be a rock star. Literally! He moved to LA and pursued that dream. When it didn't work out, he moved back and contemplated grad school. But he found success in a series of sales jobs, and decided to skip grad school and dive into real estate. Biggest Mistake His biggest mistake was not anticipating the crash in 2008 - and it cost him a cool million dollar loss that he's still paying off. He did a gut check and realized that the experience would end up defining him, so he decided to take the high road and not declare bankruptcy. That decision has paid off so far, as his business is booming and he's attracted a whole new slate of investors to work with. Biggest Success Brent told me that his biggest success in real estate was his daughter. This was a great answer. It turns out that real estate has giving him the freedom to have full custody of his daughter, and be extremely active in her life as a single parent. Things would have turned out significantly different had he pursued grad school and gotten a job. Money Talks Brent uses investor funds to fund his deals. Answer to Listener Question The question I put to Brent was "What do investors need to know before they invest in the city of Detroit" His answer was - it's not "what" it's "who", which makes a lot of sense. He made the analogy that he wouldn't dream of investing in a place such as Calcutta India from Michigan without having someone local in his back pocket as a guide of advisor. The same goes for Detroit. If you're going to invest here you need to have someone here who will actively look after your interests and not just give lip service to it. Links and Resources and Information 1. You can contact Brent via his cell phone at (313) 461-6747 2. Or you can reach him via his website at Live In the D 3. Brent is actively managing over 200 properties in the city of Detroit. If you're not happy with your property manager, I encourage you to give him a a call and see if his approach would be a fit for you. 4. Also - if you're an investor with risk capital to deploy, you should call Brent to see if what he's doing in the city is a fit for your risk tolerance and your portfolio. You never know - a simple phone call could end up making you a 30% ROI next year. If you have feedback on the show, a question you’d like answered, a news item, or perhaps a recommendation of someone you’d like me to interview, or if you’d like to be a guest on the show, go to http://www.REITalkDetoit.com/contact and let me know about it.
