Breast Cancer Ireland's Very Pink run is set to kick off on the 31st August, and one of the Ambassadors is the brilliant Author Cathy Kelly. She joins Kieran Cuddihy for the Thursday Interview.
This time I'm joined by author Cathy Kelly - Cathy is a former journalist whose debut novel, Woman To Woman, became an instant number one bestseller. Since then, she has published 22 novels, which have sold millions of copies globally. She has been a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Ireland since 2005 and has visited many countries to report on UNICEF's work. When not writing with a small dog nestled at her back, she reads voraciously, dances round the kitchen, travels pillion on a motorbike, has a variety of textile art projects on the go and pretends to Marie Kondo the house. Cathy's latest novel Sisterhood is - of course - about two sisters - Lou and Toni. Lou is someone who habitually puts herself last…until the events that unfold at her 50th birthday party push her to stop pleasing other people and decide to finally put herself first. This prompts us to discuss how commonly those of us coming up to 50 are prompted to examine our lives, sometimes interrogating what we have been putting up with and questioning, asking ourselves… “What am I for?” Cathy also talks about her own treatment for cancer - another life inflection point that makes you question everything… We move on to talk about the appeal of historical novels and Cathy is kind enough to share a few recommendations for books that she has loved recently: the Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard (https://www.panmacmillan.com/blogs/fiction/cazalet-chronicles-books-in-order) and A Discovery of Witches https://deborahharkness.com/all-souls-world-home/the-all-souls-world-books/ (and I mention one of my all time favourite historical novels: https://historicalnovelsociety.org/reviews/the-needle-in-the-blood/) Cathy calls out the misogyny and snobbishness around fiction written ‘by women, for women, about women's lives' and we touch on the evolution of the so-called ‘chick lit' writers now hitting their 50s and writing about this new age and stage of their lives. We also head off on a few tangents, reminiscing about carefree pre-Internet times and 80s fashion! Find out more about Sisterhood at https://harpercollins.co.uk/products/sisterhood-cathy-kelly?variant=40276782973006 - out in hardback now, and in paperback in March 2025… If you enjoy the podcast and would like to help me keep it running (on a shoestring!) please consider buying me a ‘virtual coffee' at Ko-fi.com/middlingalong - or you can support me in a non-monetary way by sharing this episode, or writing a short review online! We have a week of reunions and debuts on a brand new episode of Tights and Fights!Danielle, Hal and Lindsey are back together again, just in time for the final push into SummerSlam. No other group in wrestling has captured our hearts this week quite like Sonya Deville, Zoey Stark and Shayna Baszler aka “The Studline.” Sure they may never actually be called that on camera, but they forever will be in our hearts. And we're torn between believing the Liv/Dom/Rhea story could be something that ends in a really cool and exciting new direction for everyone in the Judgment Day… or it could be falling into the same boring tropes that we always dread. Hold onto hope! And hark! Does the Tribal Chief cometh in just a few weeks? The Main EventAlison Brie is an actor who's most recently appeared in Peacock's “Apples Never Fall.” And wrestling fans know her as the star of Netflix's “GLOW.” The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling brought a lot of new eyes to wrestling. Unfortunately the show was never given a proper conclusion. But it still lives on in the hearts of fans… including us! We talk to Alison about the GLOW fanbase, what it was like to learn how to wrestle, whether or not WWE ever talked with her about getting in the ring and more. The Three CountDanielle put over the belief in Joe Hendry.Lindsey put over Cathy Kelly being a gift.Hal put over Kevin Owens' great advice.Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford and Lindsey Kelk.Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.The music for our new promo is provided by Incompetech.comIf you want to talk about more wrestling throughout the week be sure to join us on Facebook, BlueSky and Instagram. We continue our lore keeping journey on Following Lucha this week by watching and analyzing season 1 episode 29 of El Ray Network's Lucha Underground, “Fight to the Death.” From Ryback being the musical guest for this week's episode, to Johnny Mundo turning bad guy, to Vampiro dressing like a convict, to Mil Muertes being reborn in new pants, to the unfortunate fate of Bael, episode 29 was pretty good! Sunday Times bestselling author Cathy Kelly talks to Cheryl Akle about her early career as a journalist, and how her writing has changed over the years. Her latest book, Other Women, is out now. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Cathy Kelly is one of Ireland's favourite novelists. She is also a global literary star selling over 15 million copies. Her stories are always heartfelt and her characters are brought to life by her emotive and natural writing. 'Other Women' is the name of her latest book. It revolves around 3 very different women - Sid, Bea and Marian. #METOO INSPIRATION One narrative in the story is informed by Cathy's own life experience. She told Alison Curtis on Weekend Breakfast that if all her books (over 20 now!) were informed by her own life she'd "be in a pickle jar at this stage. It's just not possible!" However, she has used this new book to include an event that she experienced that informed a character's story. She also credits the #MeToo movement for inspiring her include it in the story. “Suddenly you begin to hear other people’s stories. And it’s very powerful to say, ‘Oh, that’s not your fault. How was that your fault? Why is it that when you’re 20, and somebody who has power over you does this to you, why is that your fault?’” She also says that sometimes people can shield what is really going on and slowly we are getting able to shre and open up much more as people than we used to in Ireland: “I thought, ‘OK, you know, people look at me and they think because I am enthusiastic, and I’m generally a good-humoured person, they don’t see that there’s any darkness, or that there’s any anxiety or worry. And I’m a bag of all of those things." I think if you read my books, you can see that.” Huge congrats to @cathykellybooks 🎉 on her new number 1 bestselling book. #OtherWomen is out now and available in all Irish bookshops!! @orionbooks pic.twitter.com/zGxSn6d7QG — Hachette Ireland (@HachetteIre) April 20, 2021

Making a decision for yourself, even when everyone is telling you not to, is not an easy task...especially when from the outside it looks like you’re at the height of your career. Today’s guest chose to be bold and listen to her instincts and that’s something we can all learn from. Cathy Kelly is a Mensa International–certified journalist, podcaster and red carpet interviewer. Cathy gained notice among the WWE Universe as a host of AfterBuzz’s weekly recap programs for Monday Night Raw and WWE NXT. I’m so excited to sit down with her and discuss her hosting career, the decision she’s made and how she’s stayed healthy and confident while working hard towards her dreams. Good at Games: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience! Jill Mansell's hugely entertaining bestseller GOOD AT GAMES is perfect for you if you love reading Cathy Kelly, Milly Johnson and Lucy Diamond. Reviewers love Jill Mansell: 'A lovely uplifting read' Good Housekeeping Suzy fell for Harry the moment she showed him her husband's sperm sample. It didn't really belong to her husband, though, because she wasn't married. It wasn't a sperm sample either, it was a drinks carton containing the dregs of her milkshake. But when you're trying to get off a speeding charge you just have to improvise, don't you? And it wasn't actually love at first sight. Still, it was undeniably a healthy attack of lust. And it might just be the beginning of something special... *Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.
