Kris & David are back to discuss the (almost-)week that was November 15-20, 1995.We start by going over the cover story of the week's Observer, which summarizes all of the big stories of that week, before moving on to…WCW, which ran the first-ever Hulk Hogan vs. Sting match on Nitro at the Macon Coliseum, which Kris attended live in person and completely flopped at the box office. We then move on to the international scene, including the opening night of AJPW's Real World Tag League at Korakuen Hall, the announcement of the second Super J-Cup, the final Pro Wrestling Fujiwara Gumi show before the launch of BattlARTS, Ultimo Dragon vs. Chris Jericho in a theater in Morris, Manitoba, and more.Back in the United States, we take a look at the first Battlecade: Extreme Fighting PPV and all of the drama that led to it being moved from Brooklyn to North Carolina at the last minute, as well as how it had an overall more skilled group of fighters than most UFC cards from that era.On the indie scene, we look at a wild day in the life of Sabu, as he worked an afternoon show against Hakushi for Dennis Coralluzzo's NWA New Jersey hours before returning to ECW at November to Remember, as well as SMW being days away from folding, as well as the USWA experimenting with moving the weekly Memphis house show to Wednesday night, Ron Skoler suing an indie promoter, and more.We close with the WWF, featuring an eventful Survivor Series where Bret Hart regained the WWF Championship from Diesel and Diesel shifted to being a tweener, as well as the infamous angle the next night on Raw where Shawn Michaels collapsed while wrestling Owen Hart. Dan and Sam are back again. Following up the conversation on the hoot that was Tournament of Death 3, we decide to chat about one of the most important tournaments in the history of of wrestling. Safe to say Super J-Cup 94 influenced a whole lot of the wrestling we see today. It was a highly successful of its times...but does it hold up? That's one of the questions we try to answer along with "Who owed Ricky Fuji?" and "Liger, good?". Hot topics that we are here to help with. Kris & David are joined by the returning Beau James (@kingofkingsport) for a TWO-PART episode of BTS celebrating our 350th show, discussing the week-plus that was April 12-19, 1994. We start with WCW, where it's a massive section featuring Hulk Hogan officially reaching a deal with the company, Jesse Ventura winning his big videotape royalties lawsuit over the WWF, Brian Pillman & Steve Austin re-upping their contracts for two years, 2 Cold Scorpio getting fired over his love of jazz cigarettes, Missy Hyatt on A Current Affair, and, oh yeah…SPRING STAMPEDE '94, one of the greatest PPV's ever. We then go to Japan, where we talk about an epic April 16th in Tokyo, as All Japan has Champion Carnival finals at the Budokan after Mitsuharu Misawa's "injury" shook everything up, while New Japan has the first SUPER J-CUP at Sumo Hall, which changed Japanese wrestling in many ways both in Japan and in western fan culture. We also have the UWFi returning to PPV in the United States, Tonya Harding turning down All Japan Women, and tons more. Dylan hosts a very special historical episode of the Eastern Lariat, joined by his good friend Dr. Jonathan Foye, the author of Ganbaru, the story of how AJPW survived the 2000 NOAH split & his new friend, who happens to be a legendary journalist, who has experience in writing, podcasting, commentating, & working behind the scenes in Japanese wrestling for over 3 decades, Fumi Saito. We discuss many topics on this show centered around Sumo Palace (aka Sumo Hall). We start all the way from the original incarnation of the building nearly 200 years ago to the incarnations of the Kokugikan that followed, then the many big matches and events that took place there over the years and it's recent resurgence over the last month with STARDOM, Zero1, NJPW & NOAH all have or are about to run shows there in the span of a month. Historical content we touch on is too much to list but include: Rikidozan's start in Sumo Palace and incident with Masahiko Kimura. NJPW's success in the 80's and Inoki's ways & matches. The IWGP Title inaugural tournaments. Tiger Mask(s)! The famous riots in 1984 & 1987 at the venue. WWF running in Japan and their interactions with AJPW & NJPW in the early 90's. Super J Cup and it's legacy among English speaking fans as well as Japanese. The dark ages of wrestling in Japan in the 2000s and the many companies that ran it over the years. Thank you for listening to our show and please follow Fumi @fumihikodayo , Dylan @Viva_Zero , Jonathan @JonthanFoye and of course the show @EasternLariat for updates on all things Japanese wrestling, and a new episode with Dylan re-joined by STRIGGA very soon! Thank you!
Kris & David are joined by TARO (@loknloll) to discuss the week that was December 8-14, 1995. We recap a wild Monday Nitro in Charlotte where Hulk Hogan got crucified by the pro-Horsemen fans en route to a Nitro overrun where everyone forgets what they just did, which is the epitome of WCW EVERYBODY. We also talk about the awesome of AJPW Real World Tag League finals, WAR hosting Super J-Cup 2nd Stage, a more standardized WAR show featuring El Gigante, ECW bracing for the loss of Public Enemy, the SMW vs. USWA feud being red hot in Memphis after SMW folded, the saga of the WWF women's division as Alundra Blayze/Madusa Miceli leaves and while Aja Kong stiffs Chaparita ASARI on Raw, Diesel's new attitude, and much more. But most important of all? TARO gives us a live rundown of one of the holy grails of the last 30 years....the STAR OF DEATH CAGE MATCH on a AAA show at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian stated months ago...that their next loss will mean the end for them as a team. Cody Rhodes submitted QT Marshall with the Figure Four. Anthony Ogogo put down Cody with a single punch to gut after the match. AEW's Tony Khan told Busted Open Radio he expects full capacity at Daily's Place for Double Or Nothing. That would be around 5,000 fans. “El Jefe” was finally revealed on last night's MLW Fusion. It is indeed former Lucha Underground figurehead Dario Cueto leading Azteca Underground. He appeared in a prerecorded vignette at the very end of the show...having a chat with the recently abducted Salina de la Renta. (Cueto MLW Reveal) That clip from last night's Fusion. Cueto went on to say he'd “see you” at MLW's show in Philadelphia on July 10th. Another major development on last night's Fusion - Myron Reed reclaimed the MLW Middleweight Championship - avenging his title loss to Lio Rush. MLW retconned Rush's “phantom” AAA Cruiserweight Title win over Laredo Kid from weeks ago - a win that's not recognized by AAA. MLW said Laredo Kid refused to accept the loss, citing video of Rush...perhaps tapping out...earlier in that title match. (STINGER: WWE) A high stakes match on today's NXT UK. Former tag partners Amir Jordan and Kenny Williams in a No Disqualification Match - Loser leaves NXT UK. Also today, Ilja Dragunov vs. Dave Mastiff. Fightful is reporting Daniel Bryan's WWE contract expired following last Friday's SmackDown...where he lost a Universal Title match to Roman Reigns. (STINGER: ROH) Ring Of Honor announced the first entrant in its women's title tournament will be 19-year-old independent wrestler, Rok-C. New champions in Dragon Gate! At Wednesday's “Dead Or Alive” show…Kaito Ishida & Kazma Sakamoto won the Open The Twin Gate Tag Titles...and Jason Lee, Dragon Dia & La Estrella won the Open The Triangle Gate Titles. The first match at the Double Or Nothing pay per view was announced last night. Dr. Britt Baker will get her shot at Hikaru Shida's AEW Women's Championship. The challenger for Kenny Omega's AEW Championship will be decided on next week's Dynamite...when the top two ranked contenders go one-on-one: Pac vs. Orange Cassidy. I'm Matt Carlins and this is JUST Pro Wrestling News for Sunday, December 13, 2020. This update is sponsored by IndyWrestling.us Three big events Saturday night, and because of the prerecorded nature of two of them, some wrestlers appeared on multiple shows. El Phantasmo is the back-to-back winner of New Japan's Super J Cup tournament. He went through Lio Rush and Blake Christian on his way to the finals, where he beat ACH. After his win, El Phantasmo answered a challenge from Best of the Super Juniors winner Hiromu Takahashi. (ELP Challenges Hiromu) Karl Fredericks was pulled from a tag match on the Super J Cup show with an undisclosed injury. Fredericks was beaten by Jay White on Friday night's New Japan Strong show. The biggest show of the year for Mexico's AAA promotion - TripleMania was held Saturday night with NO fans in attendance. Kenny Omega retained the AAA Mega Championship. He put away Laredo Kid with a One Winged Angel from the second turnbuckle. After the show, Omega was asked who is next for him in AAA. (Omega On Vikingo) That interview from Diario Record in Mexico. The Lucha Bros. were also on the show. They retained their AAA World Tag Team Titles in a 3-way match. Penta El Zero M briefly left the match. He's reportedly nursing a leg injury. He later returned without his right boot and turned the tide for her and Rey Fenix. In the main event, Pagano defeated Chessman in a Hair vs. Hair match. There's a new X-Division Champion in Impact Wrestling. At Final Resolution Saturday night, Manik dethroned Rohit Raju. Later, TJ Perkins admitted on social media that it was him under the mask. This was the first sighting of Manik in Impact since March. And before that, the character hadn't been seen since the TNA days back in 2015. Kenny Omega was part of the Final Resolution show. Karl Anderson visited Omega's bus and got a pep talk from Kenny and Don Callis. Anderson later beat Ethan Page. In the main event, Rich Swann successfully defended his Impact World Championship against Chris Bey. Swann was then confronted by Moose. Also, Deonna Purrazzo retained the Knockouts Title against Rosemary. The Number 1 Contender for Finn Balor's NXT Championship is set to be decided on next Wednesday's NXT. Kyle O'Reilly will face Pete Dunne. The winner gets Balor on January 6th. Also being promoted for next Wednesday's NXT.. Rhea Ripley vs. Toni Storm.. And Karrion Kross returns to action. That's JUST Pro Wrestling News for this Sunday, December 13. Please rate, review and subscribe for daily updates. I'm Matt Carlins. Thank YOU for listening!
**DISCLAIMER** We did have some issues with this episode but not as bad as previously and the audio is better so we're here...albeit 3 days later :) We have completed 9 nights of Block action between the two tournaments and now we know who will fight to be the best tag team in the world and who will battle to determine who's the best Junior around! On this episode, we recap the final 5 cards of the week, which included the final two nights of Block action for both tourneys! After we recap the week and go over the final standings, we give our predictions for the December 11 FINAL card, which contains 2 6-man tag matches, 2 regular tag matches, and the finals of WTL and BoSJ. After we preview the Final night of the two tournaments, we will also give predictions for the Super J Cup 2020, which will take place the day AFTER the WTL/BoSJ FINAL on December 12! Find out who we think will take home the trophy and jacket in this annual event that will see unique matches and some of our favorite wrestlers in action!
